JOHN COATES HONOURED
my school days at Homebush Boys High and I
never imagined back then I would receive such
an honour at a world renowned venue like this
one” Coates said. “Thank you to the Rowing and
Canoeing communities for your support”.
Minister Ayres congratulated Mr Coates saying
“John has been involved with this venue since
its inception and has watched it develop into
the great facility it is today”.
“SIRC is an outstanding success because of the
partnership between Rowing and Canoeing, the
New South Wales Government the Penrith
Lakes Development Corporation and the
community, and it is fitting that the pavilion is
named in John’s honour ” Mr Ayres said.
After his introduction to rowing at Homebush
High, Coates, a coxswain, joined Sydney Rowing
Club and then became President of the
Australian Rowing Council and the Australian
Rowing Manager at the Montreal Olympics in
1976. Montreal was the start of his long journey
with the Olympic Movement.
Forty years later he is a Vice President of the
International Olympic Committee, President of
the International Court of Arbitration for Sport
and President of the AOC, a position he has held
since 1990.
The President of the Australian Olympic
Committee, John Coates AC, has had the
pavilion at the Sydney International Regatta
Centre (SIRC) in Penrith named in his
honour. The NSW Minister for Sport, Trade,
Tourism and Major Events, the Honourable
Stuart Ayres MP, unveiled a plaque on 14th May
naming the complex the John Coates

TOUR OF THE LANCER BARRACKS,
PARRAMATTA
J B SHARP 91ST MEMORIAL REGATTA
SERIES ON IRON COVE
The Union has arranged a tour of the Lancer
Barracks, Parramatta, for members of the
Union. This will take place on Saturday 13th
June 2015 at 10:00 am. Cost is $20 per person,
children under 12 free.
The J.B. Sharp Memorial Regatta Series is
always run during the winter months and
although originally only open to the ‘bay clubs’
from within Iron Cove it is now open to all
clubs, though retaining the original objective of
measuring the all round rowing strength of the
clubs.
To book, please contact Brian Guthrie 0410 138
251 or email [email protected].
The buildings at the Lancer Barracks form the
oldest continuously used military barracks on
the mainland of Australia.
They were erected on the orders of Governor
Macquarie to replace earlier barracks in
Parramatta town.
Commenced in 1818, they were completed in
1820. The architect was Lieutenant John Watts
of the 46th Regiment. They stood in an area of
3.25ha, and were designed for a company
(approximately 100 officers and men). They
served as a barracks for British regiments
stationed here in convict days.
The museum building, Linden House also stands
in this area. Many colourful and interesting
relics are now being preserved in the Museum.
They include uniforms (some of which date
from last century), equipment, saddlery,
weapons, photographs, paintings, banners,
trophies, etc. The kettle drums and banners
used when the Regiment's Band was horsed are
included as is the King's Banner awarded to the
Regiment for its South African War Service.
Adjacent to Linden House are a Covenanter
Bridge Layer, a Matilda 3 inch howitzer tank,
and Bren Gun carrier from World War II, a
Staghound armoured car, Ferret scout car, and
Centurion main battle tank, all of which were
used to equip the Regiment. This site offers a
tour of the vehicle collection.
BMG Aviation, a specialist insurance broker and
a leader in innovative specialist risk insurance
cover sponsors the 91st J.B. Sharp Memorial
Regatta Series.
Two BMG Aviation Youth Scholarships of
$1,000 will be awarded to a boy or girl at the
end of the series (details and application forms
are located on the website).
BMG Aviation will also present $500 to the club
or school winning the Men’s and Women’s
under 16 scull series point score.

2015 ROWING NSW PRESENTATION DINNER
THE 2015 INTERSTATE REGATTA
Over the last two years, the Interstate Regatta
has been the penultimate event of the Sydney
International Rowing Regatta, overshadowed
by the World Rowing Cup. In 2015, it resumed
its place as the crown jewel of Australia's
festival of rowing, and we were treated to some
emotional and exciting racing.
Rowing NSW is excited to announce the
following details of the upcoming 2015
Presentation Dinner.
The 2014 event was a great success, and we're
looking forward to making this year's dinner
even more memorable.
All attendees are encouraged to wear Club or
School blazers for what promises to be a great
night.
Date:
Tuesday 16 June 2015
Venue:
UTS Rowing Club, Dobroyd
Parade, Haberfield
Time:
6:30pm for a 7:00pm Start
Cost:
$70.00 per person
The first race of the afternoon was the women's
single scull, racing for the Nell Slatter Trophy,
with NSW represented by Elizabeth Halsall (née
Scott). Coming up against the might of Kim
Crowe, Kerry Hore and up-and-coming star
Cara Grzeskowiak was never going to be an
easy task for Liz, and while she did her state
proud, the pace was a little too fast as she
finished in 6th place.
UTS Rowing Club have kindly offered to open
up their new boatshed for tours prior to the
dinner - if you wish to have a look around at
this state-of-the-art facility, the boatshed will be
open from 6:00pm.
Bookings:
Please book early to ensure your booking.
Seats and Tables can be booked through the
Rowing NSW website.
For any enquiries contact Rowing NSW Event
Operations Officer Brett Morley email
[email protected] or in the office on
(02) 9555 6111.
The men's single scull, for the President's Cup,
was last year dominated by NSW sculler
Alexander (Sasha) Belonogoff. While Victorian
John Linke has been improving rapidly over the
last 12 months, Sasha once again dictated the
race, securing the lead 600 metres in and
holding off any attacks, eventually cruising to a
4 second win.

‘COME FORWARD’ – The NSW Union of Rowers Inc. Newsletter June 2015
The Victoria Cup, raced for by the lightweight
women's quad, was perhaps the most exciting
race of the day. The Tasmanian and NSW crews
went in as equal favourites, but an unfortunate,
boat-stopping crash left the NSW quad in the
wrong lane and 6 seconds adrift of the field.
Summoning up a huge burst of speed and
showing immense fortitude, the crew of Holly
Lawrence, Laura Dunn, Georgia Miansarow and
Sarah Pound staged a comeback for the ages,
powering through the rest of the field to finish
in second place, barely 3 seconds behind race
winners Tasmania.
While not as dramatic, the lightweight men's
four, racing for the Penrith Cup, featured a
fantastic three-way tussle for the silver medal.
The NSW crew of Simon Nola, Rod Chisholm
and Ed De Carvalho, stroked by young gun Sean
Murphy, fought right to the finish line, claiming
a bronze medal behind Western Australia and
Queensland.
Rafaela Stalph, Charlotte Medway, Serena Cox,
Rowena Meredith, Lara Wainwright, Olivia
Bartram, Bridie O'Gorman, Kate O'Gorman and
coxswain Danielle Pettit, lined up at the start
line of the women's youth eight, the
Bicentennial Trophy, as easily the youngest
crew in the field. This wasn't going to stop the
NSW crew from laying it all out on the line as
they worked their way down the course.
Unfortunately, superior experience showed
towards the latter stages of the race, with NSW
finishing in 4th place. However, with the
majority of rowers under 20 years old, we
should see this crew improve over the next two
seasons.
On paper, the NSW men's youth eight,
competing for the Noel F. Wilkinson Trophy,
were an imposing sight. On the water, this was
even more evident. The crew of Robert Black,
Campbell Watts, Jacob Bicknell, Tom Schramko,
Alex Purnell, Thomas Whitehead, Jack Cook, Zac
Whitehead and coxswain Angus Bagby threw
down the gauntlet early, streaking out to a 2
second lead over the first 500 metres. Over the
next 1500 metres nothing much changed, with
the Welshmen gaining a couple of seconds
every 500 metres to finally finish an incredible
8 seconds ahead of Queensland.

quite enough to get past Victoria, with NSW
finishing in 2nd place.
Last year's Queen's Cup team were
disappointed with their performance, finishing
6th, and vowed to step up further in 2015.
There's no doubt they did just that, as the crew
of Georgina Gotch, Jessie Allen, Amy Clay,
Genevieve Horton, Monique Heinke, Olivia
Dressler-Smith, Leah Saunders, Candice
Williams and coxswain Kendall Brodie, held off
a spirited Tasmanian finish to cross the line in
4th place. While Victoria continue to dominate
the event, the NSW crew showed that there is
potential to see the sky blue back on the
podium soon.
NSW were chasing a record 8th straight King's
Cup victory, following a dominant performance
in 2014. Unfortunately, some things are just not
meant to be. With South Australia jumping out
to an unexpected lead over the first 500 metres,
the NSW crew of Fergus Pragnell, Matthew
Ryan, Nicholas Purnell, Alexander Lloyd,
Spencer Turrin, Nick Wheatley, Jack
Hargreaves, James Chapman and coxswain
Toby Lister were left scrambling after them.
The surprise seemed to take its toll on the
Welshmen, left chasing as the Victorians
overhauled South Australia. After also getting
past SA, a quick sprint finish to the line wasn't
As always, the Interstate Regatta was filled with
amazing performances and heart-breaking
finishes. Rowing Australia once again put on a
fantastic show, featuring live coverage on Fox
Sports and colour commentary at the course by
Ray Ebert. With Victoria once again taking out
the Rowing Australia Cup, bring on 2016!
Our thanks to Rowing NSW for this report.
WELFARE REPORT
Two former elite oarsmen from Leichhardt
Rowing Club, Ralfe Currall and Max Annett are
not enjoying the best of health at the moment
As at 20th June, Ralfe, now 82, was a resident of
the St John of God Hospital at North Richmond,
and hopes to be returning home next week to be
cared for by his wife Faye. whilst Max Annett,
now of Avoca is also well looked after by wife
Barbara at home.
Ralfe represented NSW in Kings Cup Eight Oared
crews in 1956, 1958, 1959 and 1960 winning the
1959 event in Perth, West Australia. He was a
representative in the Australian eight oared crew at
the 1958 Henley Royal Regatta, and in the same
year represented Australia in the Eight at the 1958
Empire Games.
Max Annett also represented NSW in the Kings
Cup, in 1958, as a member of the winning eight
1959 and again in1960.
Max also competed in the 1960 Olympic Games in
Rome as a member of the Australian Coxed Four.
This was the only Australian crew to make a final
that year.
Both men have the best wishes and support from
both their Club and Union members.
