So when Debbie Kifer,
MSN, RN set foot on
campus as the new chief
nursing officer at Midwest
Regional Medical Center
you probably would have
imagined she would hit the
ground running.
Instead, she hit the
ground listening.
“It’s all a process,” Kifer
says. “You don’t want to
force anything on anyone
and there’s ways to do
that
through

methodologies. When you
break down processes in any
system it’s important to bring
them along in the process
and get their direct input.

Oklahoma to Acquire
Shawnee Medical
Center Clinic
SSM Health Care Oklahoma and the Shawnee Medical
Center Clinic (SMCC) today signed an agreement that will
bring the multispecialty medical group into SSM Health Care
Oklahoma effective June 17, 2012. Terms of the transaction
will not be disclosed.
The Shawnee Medical Center Clinic is a 27-physician
medical group that has 220 employees and 13 midlevel
providers (physician assistants and nurse practitioners). The
clinic has been providing the highest quality health care in
the community for more than 40 years and has grown to
become a premier multi-specialty health facility in the state
of Oklahoma.
With the finalization of the agreement, the Shawnee
Medical Center Clinic will become part of the St Anthony
Physicians medical group. SSM Health Care Oklahoma owns
two hospitals in Oklahoma: St. Anthony Hospital (Oklahoma
City) and Bone and Joint Hospital at St. Anthony (Oklahoma
City). On March 28, SSM announced the acquisition of Unity
Health Center (Shawnee, Okla.) that will bring the number
of hospitals in the Oklahoma region to three on June 30.
The SSM Health Care Oklahoma network also includes two
St. Anthony Healthplex campuses and more than 20 affiliated
hospitals.
“We are both pleased and humbled that the Shawnee
Medical Center Clinic has made the decision to be part of
SSM Health Care, and we welcome all physicians and clinic
staff,” said SSM President/CEO Bill Thompson. “Together we
will work to ensure exceptional care is provided to the
Shawnee community and beyond.”

Mercy Hospitals El Reno and Logan County
Launch Electronic Health Record
June 9 was a big day at Mercy
metro hospitals. Some may even call
it epic. Mercy’s electronic health
record (EHR), called Epic, launched
Saturday, adding El Reno and Logan
County to the network of 24 hospitals
and countless Mercy clinics on the
system.
“We’ve been training a long
time for this,” said Doug Danker,
administrator of Mercy Hospital El
Reno. “And we can already see how
this system is going to make the lives
of our patients and our providers
easier. The biggest change we see
is we’ll be using a lot less paper,
so charts are easier to keep track
of and we’re being environmentally
friendly.”
The advantages go on and on –
less paper, no sloppy handwriting,
no waiting for records to be
transported. Mercy Clinic doctors,
nurses, practitioners and specialists
will have immediate access to patient
records from every nurses’ station,
exam room and doctor’s office across
the four states Mercy currently
serves: Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri
and Oklahoma.
It’s full of advantages for patients,
too. Next time a doctor asks a patient
when the last time she had her
cholesterol levels checked, she doesn’t
have to wrack her memory trying
to come up with an accurate answer.
The doctor can pull up the patient’s
electronic medical record, look at the
patient’s history of tests and decide
whether it’s time for another test,
or not. This could potentially save
patients the cost, time and anxiety of
going through redundant testing.
Another
advantage
is
communication. Mercy Clinic doctors
are informed when their patients have
appointments with other Mercy Clinic
specialists, or visit any Mercy urgent
care facility or emergency room.
That means primary care providers
can perform the follow-ups necessary
after unexpected medical visits.
Plus, as EHR continues to roll
out, patients will have access to their
medical records, and the records of
their kids and other people whose
health they manage, using MyMercy.
This patient portal to the electronic
health record allows patients to
schedule appointments with their
physician, communicate via private
two-way messaging with their care
team, see lab results in a timely
manner, request prescription refills,
pay bills online and in some cases
conduct e-visits – virtual medical
consultations being piloted at Mercy.
More than 200,000 patients are
enrolled in MyMercy.
It’s a big learning curve for
co-workers, but Mercy has been
implementing EHR for nearly a
decade. Co-workers in El Reno and
Logan County have been training for
eight weeks. For two weeks starting
Saturday, 90 co-workers from other
Mercy locations who are experienced
with EHR will take turns travelling
to both hospitals to support staff
during the switch.
“I’m really proud of the way
our co-workers are embracing this
new technology,” said Josh Tucker,
administrator of Mercy Hospital Logan
County. “Our top priority is always
to care for our patients the best way
possible – EHR helps us do that. Now
we can easily see all of the patient’s
medications, allergies and lab results.
Since all of this information is right
there in their EHR, our physicians
can readily access this to ensure we
are prescribing the best choice of
treatment for our patients.”
A federally mandated electronic
conversion of patients’ health records
was instituted in 2009, but Mercy was
ahead of the curve, beginning the
transition in 2004 with a $450 million
investment.
Electronic health records for all
3 million patients served per year at
Mercy are safe in the Mercy Data
Center. Known as the “Fort Knox of
Data Storage,” the $60 million, hightech data center – built to withstand
tornado-force winds and constructed
in an area removed from earthquake
fault lines – sits on a bedrock
foundation in Washington, Mo., and
has access to alternate sources of
power. It’s capable of transferring
the entire contents of the Library of
Congress in less than 6.5 seconds. For

Such forward thinking has gained
Mercy national attention, like being
named Health Care’s “Most Wired” by
the American Hospital Association in
2011, an honor recognizing hospitals
for adoption, implementation and use
of information technology. Mercy CEO
Lynn Britton was in 2012 honored
with the CEO IT Achievement Award
– an award bestowed annually to
only three health care leaders in
the U.S. More than 60 health
care leaders were nominated for
the award, co-sponsored by Modern
Healthcare magazine and the Health
Information and Management Systems
Society, which recognizes CEOs who
demonstrate a commitment to using
IT to advance their organizations’
goals.

“Honestly, they have some of the
best solutions out there,” Kifer says.
“And some of them are easy fixes. It
just goes to show how important it
is to have a team concept with the
work we do. Team is everything.”
Kifer has more than 30 years
of nursing leadership experience and
brings a diverse clinical background
to Midwest Regional.
With a son in Edmond, Kifer
said the move from Clinton was
good from a personal standpoint as
well.
“This is a larger facility and I’m
used to a larger facility,” Kifer says.
Kifer is highly trained in quality
methodologies such as LEAN and
previously served as Chief Nursing
Officer in several acute care hospitals,
held executive leadership roles in
quality management, infection control,
core measures, risk management
and patient satisfaction. Trained as
a cardiac,intensive care & post-op
transplant nurse, Kifer has also
managed home health, women’s &
children’s services, infusion services,
and medical-surgical units.
“We’re thrilled to have Kifer
join our leadership team,” said
Stan Holm, CEO. “She is the kind
of experienced leader our hospital
needs to continually provide the best
quality patient care possible.”
Kifer is set to lead the nursing
staff at Midwest Regional Medical
Center. Located in Midwest City on
the eastern edge of Oklahoma City,
the 255-bed acute care facility owned
and operated by Health Management
Associates, Inc. (HMA) has steadily
increased its reputation throughout
the years.
With nearly 300 primary care
and specialty physicians on the
medical staff, patients have access
to a full spectrum of healthcare
expertise including cardiac services,
pulmonology, orthopedics, internal
medicine, OB/GYN and urology.
Additionally, Midwest Regional
has Oklahoma’s most experienced
robotic-assisted surgical team, giving
patients greater precision, less
pain, smaller incisions and faster
recovery.
“I’ve spent a lot of time designing
positive patient experiences,” Kifer
says. “That is truly where nursing
needs to go. There’s a great team
here with very compassionate nurses
and leaders who have been here
awhile. I want to instill passionate
leadership to help foster that sense
of purpose out there with nurses.”
Kifer received her undergraduate
degree in nursing from Baylor
University and received a Masters
in Nursing from the University of
Phoenix in Phoenix, AZ. She is a
member of the Oklahoma Hospital
Association, the American Nurses
Association, the Oklahoma Nurses
Association, and the Oklahoma
Organization for Nurse Executives.
“I think we’re really focused
on what the customer is telling
us,” Kifer said. “We’re bringing in
information from day-to-day activities
and from our community leaders.”
Bringing that focus to a
community hospital is Kifer’s short
and long-term goal.
“We’re asking the patients what
would make it better. What do you
think? What do you notice, the
good, bad and ugly kind of thing,”
Kifer says.
While it may be a community
hospital
“I think it’s a great place to

work,” Kifer said. “During Nurses
Week, I told them I was the new
kid on the block but I wanted to
know how it was going for them.
Overwhelmingly I heard satisfaction,
morale was good, they felt like they
were giving good patient care and
they were staffed well.
“That is a blessing … to have
direct care nurses that feel a sense
of satisfaction and feel they’re giving
good care.”
The past few weeks have been
a whirlwind. In the midst of taking
a new job and moving into a new
office, Kifer also attended her son’s
wedding.
She’s already started planning her
daughter’s nuptials in September.
If she makes it through this year
she says she’ll be doing a good job.
If she keeps listening to her
nurses, she says Midwest Regional
will be doing even better.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE: HOSPICE NURSE UNDERSTANDS CIRCLE OF LIFE

Nothing but trees for miles around.
She never envisioned this would
be the type of place she would come
to work at every day. To be honest,
Sims never even imagined herself
working in health care.
The new medical gem in Edmond
is a $94 million facility encompassing
155,000 square feet. An adjoining 45,000
square foot medical office building
includes a Jim Thorpe Outpatient
Physical Therapy Clinic.
Situated a few miles from Lake
Arcadia, the new hospital is situated
among acres and acres of trees.
Unless you know where you’re
going, you might drive right by it.
And if you would have asked her
more than a decade ago whether she
might work in a place like this she
would have laughed.
So what got her to this point?
“Honestly, I would have to say
probably just God,” Sims said. “I
changed my major multiple times in
college.”
Sims started out at Rose State,
intent on becoming a CPA. Then she
found out there was math involved
– a lot of math. And that changed
things drastically.
After accounting it was physical
therapy before she centered on nursing.
From there she went to Langston
for her nursing degree and then
recently completed her MBA through
the University of Phoenix
“I started out at a nursing home
for one summer,” she said. “I said
let me just go and start off in the
trenches to see if this is something I
really wanted to do. I worked at two
different ones during the summer and
it was hard work. You want to talk
about sweating.
“I still remember some of the
residents there. That’s where my
passion is, I love the elderly.”
The trenches as she calls them,
was where Sims’ passion for care really
began. Never one to be comfortable
around babies or kids, she felt perfectly
comfortable serving the elderly.
Maybe it was her upbringing. Or
maybe it was something more.
Sims’ favorite part of the job has
nothing to do with all the new nuts
and bolts or the brand-spanking new
equipment that still hasn’t lost its
shine.
“Probably the people,” Sims said.
Sims is a relatively new nurse,
coming on in 2000. She started as a
patient care associate, the equivalent of
a nurse tech today.
She began working the floor on
nine east before transferring to the
transplant ICU. From there she went
on to become a nurse extern and then
a nurse intern.
Sims came on in June ahead of
the October 3 opening.
She got to offer a lot of nursing
input on everything from furniture to
equipment.
She loves the outcome and only
a nurse could have designed the
arrangement of the departments she’s
in charge of.
“It’s very nice. It’s convenient. The
really nice thing about being on the
third floor is that we have the ICU
and the medical surgical floor. It’s
very nice for patients for transition
and it’s nice and convenient for the
staff and the families.”
The convenience – right off of I-35
– is nice. But Sims likes what she gets
to experience after her commute the
best. Everyone at the new facility is
the best of the best.
“What I will say about handpicked staff, I’ve been with INTEGRIS
since 1998 and I’ll say they always
look for the right staff,” Sims said.
“I always try to look at the values
of love, learn and lead and make
sure I see those things in people. We
want the patients and their families to
have a good experience. You don’t see
people coming in just for a paycheck.
“My motto is to do unto others
as you would have them to do unto
you.”

I call work-flow processes and make
sure the processes we have in place
now continue and that those change
and evolve because they will as we
continue and grow,” Sims said. “And
of course our patient experience is
always going to be right there in
the forefront. I want to continue to
improve. There will be opportunities
we will see to improve that experience
with the patient.

Pew Scholars in the Biomedical
Sciences for 2012.
Olson, who came to OMRF
in 2010, is an assistant member
in the Immunobiology and
Cancer Research Program. His
research focuses on fibrosis, the
creation of scar tissue in disease,
which is a cause of organ
failure in the heart, kidneys
and liver.
“Dr.
Olson’s
work
is
innovative and important,” said
OMRF
President
Stephen
Prescott, M.D. “By approaching
fibrosis from a developmental
biologist’s
perspective,
he’s
opening up new avenues of
understanding that could have
important
implications
for
treating many diseases.”
Launched in 1985, the
Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation Pew Scholars Program in the
Biomedical Sciences identifies
scientist Lorin Olson, Ph.D.
and
invests
in
talented
researchers in medicine or biomedical sciences. It is a rigorously competitive
program where recipients receive $240,000 over four years to pursue their
research without restriction.
Applicants who work in all areas of physical and life sciences related
to biomedical study must be nominated by an invited institution and
demonstrate both excellence and innovation in their research. This year,
179 institutions were requested to nominate a candidate, and 134 eligible
nominations were received.
“Unlike grant money, the Pew award isn’t tied to any specific research,
so it can be used for discoveries that might have trouble attracting
traditional funding,” Olson said. “But a real boon is being able to connect
and collaborate with Pew Scholars past and present.”
Past Pew Scholars have gone on to win MacArthur Fellowships, the
Albert Lasker Medical Research Award and three Nobel Prizes. Olson is
the third member of OMRF’s faculty to receive a Pew award; OMRF
researchers Susannah Rankin, Ph.D., and Jose Alberola-Ila, M.D., Ph.D.,
have also been past recipients of the award.
“During these challenging budgetary times when traditional sources of
funding are becoming even harder for scientists to obtain, we are proud
to back our country’s most promising scientists,” said Rebecca W. Rimel,
president and CEO of The Pew Charitable Trusts. “This funding comes
at points in the Scholars’ professional lives when they often are the
most innovative. While this program is a bold investment for us, it has
paid incalculable dividends due to our Scholars’ record of producing
groundbreaking research.”
“The support from the Pew Foundation will accelerate the pace of our
discoveries and have a long-term impact on our efforts to understand the
biological basis of fibrosis,” Olson said. “And for me personally, it is a
huge honor.”
OMRF (omrf.org) is an independent, nonprofit biomedical research
institute dedicated to understanding and developing more effective
treatments for human diseases. Its scientists focus on such critical research
areas as Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, lupus and cardiovascular disease.

Working in health care can be very challenging, not
just caring for patients but working with other
professionals can create unmeasurable stress. I work
in psychiatric nursing and it amazes me how many
of my co-workers have never looked at their own
mental health. How do you get the word out that that
caregivers need to work on their own issues in order
to be effective in their work with others?
You would think that the exposure to group therapy, recreational
therapy and gaining insight through journaling thoughts and
feelings might make health care providers gravitate towards learning
something for themselves. What a great opportunity; its free and
available.
When I was in nursing school, during my psychiatric rotation, all
of the students were required to participate in group therapy with
a psychiatrist. This gave us an opportunity to gain empathy for our
patients as well as tap into some of our own issues. I’m not sure
we saw this as something we wanted to do but our instructors were
determined we were going to learn something about ourselves as
well as our patients.
Unfortunately we all work with someone who is oblivious to
the fact that they NEED HELP. We see them looking baffled when
they get looked over for a promotion, seem isolated because others
just don’t really enjoy being around them or have conflict with
co-workers and accept no blame. The light bulb wattage is just too
low.
There are times when a manager can counsel with an employee
and suggest the Employee Assistance Program when the problems
reach a level that chaos is occurring on the patient unit. If the issue
is not addressed it takes a toll on the other employees, often creating
illness, unnecessary stress and even call ins to avoid that person. The
one thing a manager cannot do is ignore it, if you see it, address it!
I wish I had an answer to your question that would really solve
the problem. If you were working an Ala-non program, I would
remind you to stay focused on YOU. (You have no control over
anyone else.) Continue to take care of yourself the best way you
can. If you really want to vent that built up stress from working
with the “co-worker mental patient” EXERCISE......move your body!
It doesn’t have to be a marathon, get out in your garden, walk in
the neighborhood or run the vacuum. Don’t go home and sit......that
doesn’t burn any stress.
Listen to music, talk to nurturing friends who make you laugh
and visualize yourself at the beach or mountains or wherever you
like to go for rest and relaxation. Fortunately your time with this
person will end and you will swipe your badge to freedom!!

Achievement Award
Lynn Britton named among three
leaders in health care technology
Changing from a world where
thick paper charts catalog a patient’s
medical history to one where all that
data is gathered electronically and
made available across the health care
continuum sounds like a no-brainer.
But in reality, reversing hundreds of
years of medical protocol is anything
but easy. The commitment to implement
this kind of massive change effectively
is among the reasons Lynn Britton,
Mercy president and CEO, has been
named one of three winners of
the CEO IT Achievement Award, an
annual honor co-sponsored by Modern
Healthcare magazine and the Health
Information and Management Systems
Society (HIMSS).
How did Mercy become one of
the nation’s leaders in electronic health
records? Back in 2004, Britton - then
senior vice president at Mercy - led the
organization in the selection, design
and implementation of a comprehensive
electronic health record that would
link all Mercy hospitals, outpatient
clinics, urgent care facilities, labs and
imaging facilities. Five years later when
the federal government announced
they would mandate electronic health
records by 2015, HIMSS had already
ranked Mercy in the top three percent
of health care systems nationwide for
its degree of connectivity.
Beyond the early adoption of the
electronic health record, Britton was
recognized for championing IT in a
variety of ways. These include:
∑ My Mercy This patient portal
to the electronic health record allows
patients to schedule appointments,
communicate via private two way
messaging with their care team, see
lab results in a timely manner, request
prescription refills, manage the health
care of children and aging parents, pay
bills online and in some cases conduct
e-visits - virtual health consultations
currently being piloted at Mercy. More
than 200,000 patients are enrolled in
MyMercy.
∑ Telemedicine Mercy is already
using telemedicine to provide consults
in a number of specialties including

child psychology, neonatology and
neurosurgery. Mercy is working on
the development of the nation’s first
virtual care center in St. Louis.
This $90 million facility will be
staffed by doctors and nurses and
linked electronically to Mercy hospitals,
clinics and even patient homes via
telemedicine technology, making access
to health care outside urban centers
more patient friendly.

improve patient safety by reducing
dosing errors.

year’s CEO IT Achievement Award. The
other 2012 recipients are Dr. Steven
Altschuler, CEO of The Children’s
Hospital of Philadelphia, and Richard
Miller, president and CEO ofVirtua
in Marlton, N.J. All three winners are
profiled in a special section of the
June 11 issue of Modern Healthcare.
They will be honored during National
