Long before the 2010 G8 Summit put Muskoka on the political map, the region’s rugged natural beauty had been visited by many celebrities and well known politicians from across the globe, all of them looking for a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of their everyday lives. From presidents to pop stars to athletes and actors, our beautiful region has hosted numerous famous people, many of whom ended up liking the place so much they now call Muskoka their second home. And who could blame them for wanting to hang around? Covering some 4000 sq km, Muskoka’s ever-present Canadian Shield, along with its endless trees and countless lakes, provides a truly unique playground in which to unwind. www.discovermuskoka.ca 5 Muuskoka sko ka is – Othe ntario M Gre’sa tMo O ust td oP orpsu. l. a. r P l a y gr o u n d . Whether you’re here for a day, a week or forever, Muskoka’s unique natural beauty offers so many incredible experiences. From the vast wilderness of Algonquin Park in the east to the rugged windswept shores of Georgian Bay in the west, it’s never too difficult getting off the beaten track and finding a place to connect with nature, or to reconnect with friends and family. Whether you’re preference is for indoor fun – the region is home to some of the country’s top theatrical venues, art galleries and restaurants – or the majestic splendor of the great outdoors, there’s little wonder Muskoka has become one of the world’s top year-round vacation destination. 6 www.discovermuskoka.ca 3 O n T h e Wa t e r. Muskoka is the Gr e a t O u t d o o r s . . . On the boat, on the beach, on the dock… Muskoka is all about water. Muskoka’s spirit lies in its connection to water. It’s everywhere… 14,000 kilometres of incredible shoreline wrapped around a watershed of 4,660 square kilometres. Pristine lakes, breathtaking waterfalls gently burbling brooks (countless!)… it’s a paradise for water enthusiasts. Adventurous types are drawn by some of the best wake-boarding and waterskiing conditions in Ontario, with all experience levels being catered to – there are even summer camps dedicated to instructing young and old alike. Gentler, more sedate watery pursuits include great swimming and fine beaches, rowing and paddling. Scuba diving is popular, too, and the area’s well served by qualified instructors and equipment rental outlets. Like boating? Boaters can spend days exploring the waterways. If not, you can kickback and relax while someone else does the work for you aboard a comfortable cruise vessel. There’s everything from the classic RMS Segwun – North America’s oldest handfed, coal-fired steamship – to modern vessels like the Lady Muskoka or the Island Queen. For those with time on their hands and a yearning for romance, some offer longer lunch and dinner cruises or even overnighters including a stay at a classic resort. Smaller tour boats, such as the Idyllwood, a restored 1920s yacht, offer charming excursions for smaller groups. There are also numerous marinas in the area offering daily and weekly rentals, even long-term rental programs allowing a different choice of boat each week of your stay, ideal for those spending just a few choice weeks in Muskoka. For those who prefer watercraft without a motor, Muskoka has an abundance of lakes, rivers and waterfalls well suited to canoeing and kayaking. Algonquin Provincial Park and Georgian Bay both have stunning waterways, as well as paddling groups and outfitters providing trips and courses along popular routes like the Muskoka River, the Big East River, Kawagama Lake and Hollow River. www.discovermuskoka.ca 7 Mu sko ka – A D esig n a te d Arts C o m m u n i ty. For over 125 years, Muskoka’s natural beauty has attracted artists, first as a destination for landscape painters who sketched the rugged wilderness of the region, and later as a place where artists of all kinds could live, work and play. From painters, potters and photographers, to furniture builders and jewelers, to actors, writers, filmmakers and musicians, the whole spectrum of artistic expression is well represented here in Muskoka. For lovers of visual art, numerous galleries dot Muskoka’s landscape, including the Chapel Gallery, which is head-quarters for Muskoka Arts & Crafts Inc., a non-profit, umbrella organization of over 360 members representing visual artists in Muskoka. For fans of theatre and music, the district’s three performance venues – the Algonquin Theatre in Huntsville, the Rene M. Caisse Memorial Theatre in Bracebridge, and the historic Gravenhurst Opera House – are home to excellent plays and concerts year round. A number of annual events celeberate the arts in Muskoka, including two of the biggest and best-known art events in Ontario. Every July, Muskoka Arts & Crafts’ Annual Summer Show attracts hundreds of artists from within Muskoka, across the province and beyond to show off their work to well over 20,000 visitors. In September, a revered group of Muskoka artists open their studios for the Muskoka Autumn Studio Tour, the oldest studio tour in Canada. Each summer also sees incredible performances on the stages of the Muskoka Lakes Music Festival and the Huntsville Festival of the Arts. Recently, the District of Muskoka officially made the area a Designated Arts Community, recognizing the thriving artists and the impact they have on tourism and economic diversity in the region. 8 MuskokaLiteraryTrail.com Muskoka Lakes music festival Enriching the cultural fabric of Muskoka by providing leadership in arts education and quality musical entertainment 705-765-1048 www.artsinmuskoka.com www.discovermuskoka.ca An d R i c h I n C ult u r e A n d H e r it a g e . Muskoka is home to countless individuals making their living from their craft – be it art, music, writing or any number of other creative activities – as many people visit Muskoka from far and wide for its cultural events and heritage sites as they do for its natural splendor. The following are just a few of the most popular cultural events and festivals the region boasts each year. For further information on these and many more besides, including dates and location details, visit the Muskoka Tourism Website at www.discovermuskoka.ca. Art: Local artists and artisans open their studio doors Muskoka’s museums include: • Muskoka Rails Museum - Bracebridge • Bala’s Museum - Bala with Memories of Lucy Maud Montgomery • Bethune Memorial House - Gravenhurst • Dorset Heritage Museum - Dorset • Muskoka Boat & Heritage Centre - Gravenhurst • Muskoka Heritage Place - Huntsville • Muskoka Lakes Museum - Port Carling • Woodchester Villa - Bracebridge Muskoka is steeped in unique and fascinating history. These museums offer experiences in pioneer life; the area’s history of boat building and steamships; railway history; aeronautical and military history; medical innovation; logging practices; tourism; and much more. Come and step back into the past... to show off their talents and wares during the annual Muskoka-wide Muskoka Lakes Spring Art Tour, a great way to get a first hand glimpse of an artist’s work and inspiration. Also worth checking out: the Muskoka Arts and Crafts Show (Bracebridge) and the Dockside Festival of the Arts (Gravenhurst). Festivals: Muskoka’s many festivals celebrate the tremendous variety of cultural and heritage activities the region’s so famous for. From art and crafts to food and beverages, the exciting opportunities visitors have to experience a Muskoka festival, include the Bala Cranberry Festival, Huntsville Festival of the Arts, Muskoka Lakes Music Festival (Port Carling), the Bracebridge Festival Network and the Festival of the Sound (Parry Sound). Heritage: The Annual Antique and Classic Boat Show in Gravenhurst pays tribute to the region’s impressive boating and boatbuilding past, as does the Muskoka Boat and Heritage Centre, a permanent fixture on the town’s Muskoka Wharf. In addition to the area’s many museums, other fascinating heritage sites include the Torrance Barrens Dark Sky Reserve, Little, Norway Museum, the Algonquin Park Logging Museum and the historic Bracebridge Public Library. There are also 22 heritage plaques in Muskoka that have been erected by the Ontario Heritage Foundation to recognize communities, people, early settlements and historic buildings. www.discovermuskoka.ca 9 T he Small Towns O f M u s k o k a . When you’re good and ready for a trip into town – whether for a little nightlife or a spot of shopping – Muskoka’s smaller communities have plenty to offer. Situated between lakes Muskoka and Joseph is Port Carling, twotime winner of Canada’s Communities in Bloom, and a vibrant community as popular with cottagers as it is with day-trippers and resort guests. Boasting an impressive five art galleries, Port Carling is a place you’ll want to linger as you take in the busy locks – always a treat when the historic RMS Segwun steams through – and numerous eclectic stores and eateries along its long, always busy main street. Bala is the proud home of the Bala Museum, a place of pilgrimage for Anne of Green Gables’ fans, and established in recognition of the fact Lucy Maud Montgomery spent a fair amount of time in the community. Located on the northwestern shores of Lake Muskoka, Bala also boasts a wealth of galleries, including Iroquois Artisans, a unique gallery devoted to works by First Nations’ artists. However, Bala is perhaps best known for its Cranberry Festival, a celebration of the wonderful fruit that draws crowds each fall from across Ontario. 10 www.discovermuskoka.ca Each One Unique And Memorable. On the western side of Muskoka, the hamlet of Honey Harbour stands at the edge of Georgian Bay and its 30,000 islands, a UNESCO environmental heritage site that’s well worth exploring. Boaters will want to acquaint themselves with nearby Port Severn, where Georgian Bay meets the Trent River and ultimately opens up to Lake Ontario via the Trent-Severn Waterway. The one-of-a-kind Big Chute Marine Railway transports boats between two reaches of the Severn River over an 18-metre drop, and is well worth seeing even if you don’t have a boat. All told, the Muskoka Region boasts some 17 towns and villages, each with its own distinctive flavour, each unmistakably Muskokan, and each waiting to be explored. www.discovermuskoka.ca 11 S avour The Flavour s O f M u s k o k a . Muskoka’s unique environment and hospitality has attracted some of the finest chefs in the country and the district is home to some very specialized farms and food producers. Together they have formed SAVOUR Muskoka, a partnership that spotlights exceptional and distinctive culinary creations and products. Be sure to join regional farmers and chefs for their annual Field to Fork celebration which takes place on August 14, 2011 at Brooklands Farm in Milford Bay. For years, Muskoka’s been a place where creative people migrate to practise their craft. The region is in fact home to many of Canada’s top talent, be they artist, musician, author or artisan, all finding inspiration in the region’s unrivalled natural beauty. Muskoka’s also making a name for itself in the culinary crafts. Cottage Country is now making a name for itself as home to a variety of interesting wines and beers. Some of the very best flavours produced here are seasonal, made available for only limited periods of time. Muskoka Cottage Brewery in Bracebridge produces a number of excellent high-quality ales, including its flavourful Muskoka Double Chocolate Cranberry Stout, a sturdy stout brewed with roasted dark chocolate malts, real cocoa, a hint of vanilla and freshly harvested local cranberries. It was rated the Best New Beer in North America for the month of December by RateBeer.com. This beer is a seasonal brew from Muskoka Cottage Brewery and is available in limited quantities from November until it’s gone. Over in Baysville, the Lake of Bays Brewing Company has also entered the seasonal brews market with its Lake of Bays Mocha Porter, a winter seasonal beer made of roasted barley and chocolate malt to create a full, rich character, balanced by the addition of real ground coffee. Wine lovers, too, are well-catered to by the Muskoka Lakes Winery. Located in Bala, its wines are made from locally grown fruit and include such interesting varieties as blueberry and (naturally) cranberry table wines, desert wines and spritzers. www.discovermuskoka.ca 13 H ome Away From H o m e I n M u s k o k a . Muskoka’s resorts and lodges continue century-long run of excellence. Muskoka’s magnificent resorts and lodges have been welcoming visitors from far and wide for well over 140 years, lured north by the region’s abundance of trees, water and wildlife. While the allure today remains much the same, the list of great reasons to visit has grown tremendously: superlative golf, wonderful spas, incredible dining, endless boating, hiking, skiing… With so many incredible things to do, there’s little wonder tourism in Muskoka has flourished. The descendents of those first visitors still flock to the area’s resorts and lodges, generation after generation of vacationers putting Muskoka on the map as one of the world’s top vacation destinations. There’s no end of choice when it comes to finding the perfect spot in which to unwind. With more than 80 resort destinations – from luxurious 5-star all-inclusive hotels, family-run lodges, quaint inns, historic B&Bs and rustic cottage resorts – Muskoka’s got something for everyone. Even those who like getting up-close-and-personal with Mother Nature are well served, with countless campsites in which to pitch a tent or park the RV. 16 www.discovermuskoka.ca The Resort Experience. Many of the same inns that welcomed those first visitors to Muskoka are still going strong today. Some of them are well over 100 years and all thriving, standing testament to the reputation the region has earned as one of North America’s top tourist destinations. Time for some self-indulgence… If you’re looking for a little pampering while you’re here, Muskoka boasts numerous world-class spas, many of them set against some of the most spectacular scenery you’ll find anywhere. How could you simply not relax while having a lakeside hot-stone massage? All of Muskoka’s major resorts maintain first-rate spas, while many of our smaller lodges provide in-room treatments from local practitioners when a massage or pedicure is desired. That traditional spa package needn’t be so traditional, with many resorts stepping up the spa experience a notch with innovative packages focusing on whatever seems to be ailing you and “spa-ing” needn’t be a solo activity any more, with many locations now offering special couples packages that include luxury rooms, treatments… and treats. Whether for a day, a weekend or even longer, Muskoka’s resorts and lodges have just the spa experience you need to unwind and reconnect. www.discovermuskoka.ca 17 M e e t in gs A nd G ree ti n g s . Muskoka provides the perfect backdrop for private weddings and corporate meetings. As if the G8 weren’t proof enough of Muskoka’s tremendous reputation as a place for meetings and functions, whether corporate or private, Meeting and Incentive Travel Magazine ranked Muskoka as the #3 Top Canadian Destination after Toronto and Montreal. Now that we’ve hosted the “big one” – few destinations can ever lay claim to having hosted so many of the world’s most important leaders at the same time – it’s apparent Muskoka is set to become an even bigger player in the meetings and incentives industry, as well as Ontario’s foremost destination for weddings and events. Muskoka offers something no other destination can, the kind of world-class facilities normally only found in big cities and all of it set amidst the most stunning of natural surroundings. Our proximity to Canada’s largest city helps, too. Situated just a couple hours north of Toronto, Muskoka is served with a regional airport capable of handling large quantities of air traffic, including 737s. Also, our numerous lakes and smaller airstrips make the vast majority of resorts and conference facilities easily accessible. 18 www.discovermuskoka.ca T h e P e r f e c t Ve n u e I s M u s k o k a . State of the art facilities, endless recreational and team building activities, and unlimited outdoor space in which to play (What corporate event would be complete without a round of golf amongst towering pine and the everpresent Canadian Shield?) all add up to an unforgettable Muskoka experience. Add to this mix the most spacious of meeting rooms, comfortable accommodations, delicious dining and lakeside views, and you’re guaranteed productive meetings and social gatherings. Then, when the meeting’s over, Muskoka offers plenty to do outside of your conference, including live theatre and music, along with numerous sports activities whatever the season. Whether you need a cozy setting for an intimate family reunion or space for a convention for hundreds, Muskoka has everything necessary to ensure your event is a success. www.discovermuskoka.ca 19 M uskoka Is A Wint e r Wo n d e r l a n d . Muskoka, one of Canada’s favourite year-round tourist destinations, boasts more winter activities than you can shake a (hockey) stick at. With up to five snow-filled months (recent records indicate 18 feet of snow in one season!), the area offers excellent outdoor winter recreational opportunities. Skiers are spoiled for choice. For downhill enthusiasts – be it by ski or snowboard – Hidden Valley Highlands Ski Resort has an average snowfall of 125 inches annually, and can handle 6500 skiers of all levels every hour (add to this mix a vertical drop of 100 m, a longest run of 580 m and 11 runs), there’s little wonder Hidden Valley’s becoming increasingly popular as a downhill ski destination. Cross-country ski enthusiasts are well served, too, with the region’s many parks offering first-class groomed trails of varying lengths. You’d be hard pressed to cover them all in a season and, many of these same parks now offer snowshoeing trails, as well. Your winter outdoor fun needn’t end there. Other popular activities include snowmobiling on well groomed trails, skating, pond hockey, ice fishing, dogsledding, curling and snow tubing. Then just for the sheer fun of it, most communities have long-running winter festivals, many of them running during the Christmas and March Break holidays and in conjunction with area resorts. Whatever way you slice it, Muskoka is a happening place twelve months of the year. 20 www.discovermuskoka.ca www.discovermuskoka.ca 21 M uskoka Attraction s . 22 www.discovermuskoka.ca S o Mu c h To S e e A n d D o . The exposed 1.5 billion year old Canadian Shield is unique to this region, as are the cool, deep lakes left behind by the massive glaciers that once covered the land. Muskoka - it’s the haunting call of a loon echoing across the lake, or the laughter of children splashing in the water. Perhaps most memorable of all are those occasions when it seems there’s no sound whatsoever – it’s just you, the gentle rustle of a breeze and the lapping of water tickling the shoreline. Muskoka is undoubtedly one of the world’s top vacation destinations, yet despite the huge numbers of visitors that now flock here each year, there’s plenty of space for everyone. Covering some 4,000 square kms, the rugged and uneven terrain has ample rocky soil to support vast tracts of verdant green forests. Muskoka is home to some 250 species of birds, more than 50 different types of mammals, and 25 species of amphibians. The only problem any visitor to Muskoka is ever going to face is where exactly to begin exploring. Stretching from the vast wilderness of Algonquin in the east to the rugged windswept shores of Georgian Bay in the west, the District of Muskoka offers a truly unique experience with an abundance of activities, attractions, outdoor adventures and accommodations. 30 Muskoka Woodland Echoes Resort We are a delightfully small resort located on a 40 mile waterway. Only 2 ½ hours north of Toronto. Families’, couples’ getaways and good fishing! Georgian Bay Township Muskoka’s most ruggedly beautiful area, Georgian Bay Township is a striking wilderness environment rich in a history. Of particular note is Georgian Bay’s influence on Canadian art, most notably the Group of Seven who were greatly influenced by its harsh, sometimes barren shoreline and windswept islands. The township is home to three hospitable communities: Port Severn, Honey Harbour and Mac Tier. It’s here you’ll find the Canadian Heritage protected Trent-Severn Waterway with its locks, swing bridge, dams and waterfalls. It’s also home to the incredible 30,000 Islands, the perfect place to embark on a cruise or sea-kayaking trip through this fascinating Great Lakes, Georgian Bay archipelago. Also worth a visit is the extraordinary Big Chute Marine Railway, an engineering marvel that transports boats along rails in a giant carriage over a 18-metre rise between Gloucester Pool and the Upper Severn River. Georgian Bay Islands National Park consists of 63 of the region’s 30,000-plus islands, and is part of the world’s largest freshwater archipelago. It’s an area so beautiful and unique that it has been designated as a world Biosphere Reserve by the United Nations. One of the best ways to explore the natural beauty of the region’s southern part is on board the 300 passenger Miss Midland and the northern area is aboard the 500-passenger Island Queen, which provides an up-close view of the area’s ancient glacier-sculpted granite islands, majestic windswept forests, and secluded sandy beaches. 33 34 Ge o r g ia n B a y To w n s h ip Luxury that’s Affordable Surrounded by fragrant pines this beautiful year-round lakefront country Inn & Spa, will envelop you in a unique blend of contemporary luxuries & old world charm. 263 Port Severn Road, North Box 125 Port Severn, ON L0K 1S0 1-800-465-9966 • www.christiesmill.com www.discovermuskoka.ca 35 Gravenhurst The Gateway to Muskoka. Gravenhurst is the first town you’ll come across upon entering Muskoka – all roads go through it or around it. Known as the ‘Gateway to Muskoka’, it’s a four-season destination with a something for everybody, from fine-dining and superlative shopping along its picturesque main street, to the many trails that skirt around the town, including some 400-plus kms of groomed snowmobile trails. In summer, however, the big draw is the multimillion dollar Muskoka Wharf with its mix of accommodation, restaurants, museums and, of course, the RMS Segwun, the oldest steamship still operating in North America. Chugging her little heart out year after year, the Segwun and sister ship the Wenonah II, offer the best views of Lakes Muskoka, Rosseau and Joseph. The steam-theme permeates the Wharf, and is reflected in the architecture as well as the development’s ambience. Across the bay, the interactive Muskoka Boat and Heritage Centre celebrates Gravenhurst’s rich boat building history with its displays of sleek mahogany launches, restored and resting in slips at the museum docks, as well as period artifacts. Winding along the shoreline is the 2000 ft long Boardwalk offering panoramic views of the Wharf and Muskoka Bay. In between, you’ll find scenic views (great for catching a fantastic sunset), nature trails, prime fishing spots and boating activities, and a fabulous selection of shops and restaurants. Gravenhurst is also well known internationally as the home of famous humanitarian Dr. Norman Bethune, and the house in which he was born is now a national historic site and museum. Muskoka Lakes With its endless blue waters, its many islands and seemingly endless stretches of rugged shoreline, the Township of Muskoka Lakes has long been home to some of the most sought-after real estate in Canada. The reason? Its big lakes – Joseph, Rosseau and Muskoka – are a favourite for tourists, cottagers and year-round residents as all three linked via a series of locks and rivers, adding up to one heck of a lot of shoreline to explore. Muskoka Lakes is home to Bala, a charming community famous for its cranberry marshes and annual Cranberry Festival. It’s also a lively tourist town with two spectacular waterfalls, a variety of antique and craft shows, museums, and the famous Kee to Bala, a former 1940s dance pavilion that still hosts concerts each summer. Port Carling, “the hub of the lakes”, is always busy due to its eclectic mix of museums, galleries, stores and restaurants. The town’s famous locks, linking Lakes Muskoka and Rosseau, produce a daily parade of pleasure craft and cruisers as they “lock through”, and if you can time it right, you’ll catch RMS Segwun or her sister ship the Wenonah II passing through. And while exploring the Township, don’t miss the villages of Minett, Windermere, Glen Orchard and Milford Bay. These quaint communities are home to some of the region’s finest resorts, marinas and attractions, each unique and offering a taste of Muskoka past and present. 39 M uskoka Lakes Anne of Green Gables Museum in Muskoka Bala’s Museum with Memories of Lucy Maud Montgomery • Photo Ops, Costumes, Gift Shop 1024 Maple Avenue, Bala 1-888-579-7739 www.bala.net/museum OPEN YEAR ‘ROUND Affordable family vacations! Bracebridge Named after a Washington Irving novel, Bracebridge is one of those picture-perfect towns you simply can’t get enough of. Overlooking a roaring waterfall and both branches of the Muskoka River, Canada’s waterfall capital boasts 22 waterfalls within its borders, including Wilson’s Falls, High Falls (consisting of five separate falls) and numerous others within a short drive. Bracebridge celebrates this unique heritage in many ways. The economic impact of the falls is recorded along the beautiful Riverwalk, which offers breathtaking views of Bracebridge Falls from above and below. Culturally, too, the falls continues to be a focal point for visitors. Located at its top is the renovated Bird Mill, home to the Town’s Visitor Centre and restaurants, while nearby historic Woodchester Villa is one of the town’s most important landmarks. Bracebridge is also fun to explore on foot as the main street rises in tiers of shops, services and restaurants, many with vintage architectural facades. Take a little detour and it’s like stepping back in time as you wander amongst stately turn of the century homes and churches. It’s worth visiting after nightfall, too, as the town’s clock, bell tower, courthouse and “silver bridge” are outlined in unique, colourful lighting. Those with a hankering for culture will want to check out the town’s many galleries, its theatres, and the annual “Art in the Heart” show which showcases the cream of Muskoka’s emerging artists. 41 42 www.discovermuskoka.ca B r a c e b r id g e Featuring an amazing selection of candles & gifts.Famous for Elle Lunch bags, Hatley clothing and accessories, Gourmet Du Village, Peak Time Décor, Trio Cylinders, & Waboba Balls. With its population of nearly18,000 people, Huntsville is the largest and fastest growing municipality in Muskoka. An eclectic mix of the urban and rural, the town boasts wonderful examples of heritage-style architecture interspersed with large tracts of forest, lakes and marshes. Of its 144 lakes, the largest are the interconnecting ones, being lakes Vernon, Fairy, Mary and Peninsula. Huntsville, like most Muskoka towns, was dominated by the lumber industry before switching to tourism-focused economy. Muskoka Heritage Place offers a taste of what these early days would have been like for the early settlers, and includes a variety of restored centuries-old buildings and displays. It’s also home to the wonderful Portage Flyer, the original steam train that ferried visitors from the steamships of Lake of Bays to Peninsula Lake in order to circumvent the 100 foot difference in elevation between the two lakes. The Huntsville Festival of the Arts celebrates its 19th season in 2011. One of Muskoka’s top musical events, the festival is a year round celebration of the arts, including jazz, pop, choral, Celtic, country, orchestral, and classical music. It’s also a popular supporter of theatre and the visual arts, with most events being held in the 400 seat Algonquin Theatre. The Festival’s fringe program offers a writers’ series, an outdoor theatre festival, as well as visual art installations throughout the community. 44 H u n t s v ille www.discovermuskoka.ca 4545 46 www.discovermuskoka.ca Welcome to Muskoka’s second largest lake. Lake of Bays Located in the northeast corner of Muskoka, the Township of Lake of Bays consists of three communities: Dorset, Dwight and Baysville. With some 563 kms of shoreline, the body of water the Township is named after – Lake of Bays – is in fact the second largest lake in Muskoka. The scenery, with its steep wooded hills and sandy, quiet places to enjoy a swim or some fishing, is undoubtedly romantic. For those with a passion for action, there’s canoeing, kayaking, waterskiing, boating, sailing… and that’s just the water sports. There’s also hiking, biking, golfing, skiing, skating, snowmobiling, ice fishing, dog sledding… you get the picture. Dwight is a canoe-building town where many craftsmen maintain workshops, and Dorset is worth visiting for its Lookout Tower and breathtaking views of the surrounding area. It’s also a must for picture taking, especially during the spectacular fall colours. 41 47 La ke o f Bays 48 www.discovermuskoka.ca Back-to-nature in Algonquin. Algonquin Park To discover Muskoka’s really wild side, be sure to visit Algonquin Provincial Park. Ontario’s largest provincial park stretches 7,500 sq kms from North Bay to the Ottawa River and is framed by the Trans Canada Highway to the north and Highway 60 in the south and has countless walking, cycling, skiing and dog sledding trails. For those wanting to rough it, the park offers numerous activities and programs from short hikes to weeklong back-to-nature experiences. There are also 12 campgrounds to choose from, some only accessible by canoe in the summer. One of the most popular Algonquin programs is the weekly wolf howl held every Thursday in August (weather and wolves permitting). The fun starts with a brief seminar about these oftenmisunderstood creatures, and at the allotted time park guides begin their wolf imitations. Before long, you’ll find the hairs on the back of your neck stand up as the real thing joins in. The park is famous for its 2,200 km-long network of lakes and rivers just waiting to be explored by canoe or kayak. You don’t have to go it alone as professionally guided canoe trips are available through any of the three outdoor outfitters located within the park prepared to navigate you through the waterways, allowing you to immerse yourself in the magical landscape of Algonquin Park. 41 49 Al g o n q ui n Park Algonquin Outfitters – 50 Years Experience.
