BRUCE’S BLOG: WHAT’S NEW
Reunions are a fabulous opportunity to reconnect, reminisce and relive incredible memories and experiences from the past. Just to
see friends from camp and catch up is worth the trip. One of the first questions that always is asked when you get together with
someone you haven’t seen in a while is, “What’s new?” So, I thought I would anticipate the question and instead of having to repeat
my answer a few hundred times to all the reunion guests, I would tell you now. As we all know, 2014 is the 60th Anniversary of
Wahanowin so I decided to take 60 seconds and write down the top 60 updates to camp over the past 60 months. It’s always
interesting to see how people react when they haven’t seen camp for a few years. Some look around and say how wonderful it is that
everything looks exactly the same, while others are amazed at how much has changed since they were last there. But, just in case
you want to know what we’ve been up to over the last few years, here’s a list of “What’s New” at Wahanowin:

So while you’re walking around camp and rekindling that Wahanowin spirit, check out all the latest additions, changes and
improvements to camp since your last visit. The even better news is that at least 60 more upgrades are in the works over the next
few years as we constantly strive to be the best camp with the best facility, activities and programs of any camp around. Just a small
taste of what’s to come includes a brand new Dining Hall, a beautiful new Waterfront with expanded beaches, boardwalks, an
amphitheatre, a camp wide firepit plus a new office and Staff Lounge. Of course, we will continue to upgrade and/or rebuild camper
cabins and all other facilities around camp. It’s hard to know where to begin, as so much continues to go on at Wahanowin! Now
you know “What’s New” with me, at least from a camp standpoint, so when we meet this summer I look forward to hearing “What’s
New” with you!
Shaggy has been a very cozy addition to camp!

BRUCE’S
BLOG: THE PAST IS A GREAT PRESENT...
PETE’S PERSPECTIVE
Turning 60 - How does it feel?
What does 60 years feel like? Well, I can't say frankly, as I
haven’t reached that milestone quite yet (no jokes please).
These days, people are healthier and living longer and so 40
becomes the new 30, 50 is the new 40 and so on, which no
doubt all of us hope is true. I do recognize that the age of a
business is very different than that of a person, mostly in
terms of how people view age. Businesses, as they age, gain
more “CRED” because being successful for a significant time
period isn’t easy, which is why many of us still look to
Gretzky as the benchmark of a great hockey player. So,
what does turning 60 as a business feel like? And more
specifically, 60 years in the camping industry?
To be successful for 6 decades takes a lot of hard work,
creativity, changing with the times, insightfulness, resiliency,
maybe a little luck and the list goes on and on. Wahanowin,
on the brink of her Diamond Anniversary, is a testament to
representing those values at her core. Having been involved
since 1987 (just under half of Wahanowin’s history), I have
some perspective on what it takes to excel in this industry.
The end result of affecting people’s lives in a positive way is
fairly easy to measure. I know all of the Directors on an
ongoing basis speak with people from both the current era
and those from the past and the comments and emotions that
come flowing out are truly overwhelming. The best part is, it
doesn’t matter if these people worked in the kitchen for one
season, started as a CIT and stayed for 3 years as a staff, or
did the whole enchilada as a 15 year lifer. For this alone, I
feel privileged to be a small part of this incredibly personal
and powerful journey that those who attend Wahanowin get
to experience.
This email, in a unique and personal way, reflects how
Wahanowin has been able to “make a difference”, which I
think is the defining measure of one’s success in this
business.
I initially stated that I haven’t reached the 60 benchmark
yet, but would be remiss in not mentioning who was in
fact at this milestone when I first started camp back in
1987. It was none other than Mr. Harold Nashman. He
was 60 then and I can remember how vibrant, full of
energy, creative and “in-charge” he was. At the time, my
perspective of what his age meant was minimal, but now
as I creep towards that age myself, I am in complete awe
of his "get up and go" approach. He had more gumption
and drive than people half his age.
And I will allow the memory of Harold to be motivation
for all of us to feel and live life as he did and also as
motivation for Wahanowin to continue its tremendous
legacy in the same way that he “felt” at 60.
Happy Anniversary and Congratulations Wahanowin,
you deserve it!
As an example of the Wahanowin influence, I'd like to share
an email I received recently from a staff member who has
decided to move on in their life and will not be returning this
season:
“I do not believe a "thank you" is significant enough to justify
how much I appreciate all you have done for me. My past ten
years at Wahanowin have been nothing but incredible. Pete,
you have taught me many life lessons that I otherwise would
not have been able to learn on my own. You have helped
shape me into the person I am today (and let me tell you, this
person I have become is completely different than the one you
knew five years ago!)
Without a doubt, Wahanowin has given me memories and
friendships that I know will last a lifetime, but what I find to
be the most important trait that I am walking away with, are
the life lessons that you have been able to instill in me
throughout my ten summers at Wahanowin."

A WAHANOWIN LOVE STORY
Who remembers Senior Prom and Grove Ball? These two events, happening simultaneously on one of the last evenings
of summer, are probably the most anticipated and talked about events at camp. The days approaching the dances involve some serious
tension and O.D.s are kept extra busy by boys and girls who beg them to pass their folded up note with the recipient’s name and cabin
number scribbled on the front.
Jared wants to know if you will go to Grove Ball with him.
He says it’s ok if you say no. Check a box and send back - Yes No Not Sure
Then you start to worry, what should I wear? Should I let him hold my hand? Will Jackie let me borrow her halter top? And then there is
the Golden Rule of Grove Ball that gets passed on from the experienced PGs to the rookies in Grads, and that is the infamous phrase, “It’s
not who you go with, it’s who you dance with”.
Camp Wahanowin loves romance, so much so that there are some couples who left Grove Ball together and committed to much more than
sitting beside each other at the CIT/10 year service. Some couples, such as the feature couple in this edition, have decided to TITTC (take
it to the city) in a serious way.
Couple Profile: Shauna Pernica & Phil Walton
W - That’s the way we begin...
A - That’s the second letter in...
L - That is the third..
T - Bet you thought we were spelling a different word...
W, A, L... T, O, N.... I bet Shauna Pernica didn't know she
would have this last name when she and Phil first met
almost 13 years ago on the shores of Lake Couchiching.
Although it’s the prototypical hope and dream that all
summer flings will last forever, this is rarely the case, unless
of course you read this section of the newsletter, which
makes it seem like Wahanowin is a breeding ground for
camper - staff relationships turned marriages!
That said, the story of Shauna and Phil isn’t quite as linear
as some of the other predecessors to this column such as
Stepako, Silber, etc. You see, this love story had some twists
and turns in the road that lead these two to where they are
today.
After a two summer long affair (circa 2002-2003), which
carried through "to the city" aka London, ON, things
unfortunately fizzled. It seemed that having long, flowing
red locks and the keys to the J-craft were not foundation
enough to stand the test of time. With Phil heading off to
pursue dental school at U of T and Shauna remaining at
Western, these two would only bump into each other
sporadically over the next decade.
Flash forward 12 years. At approximately this time last year,
Shauna had just returned from New York after studying
interior design and was ready to settle in Toronto. Phil had
also been abroad in Boston for a few years doing his postgraduate studies and returned to Toronto as well.
As fate* would have it, they both ended up in Miami over the
Christmas holiday with their families. Unaware of the other’s
presence, a random encounter took place on the first evening
they arrived and this time as you guessed it, the rest would
be history.
Following Craig-o-Lotch's words of wisdom "when you
know, you know," Shauna and Phil decided to “take it to the
city” for round two. A mere 8 months later, a color war
captain flavored proposal followed. The first words out of
Shauna's mouth (even before "yes") were, "we need to some
how incorporate Wahanowin into our wedding plans."
Good to those words, Phil and Shauna will be celebrating
their pending nuptials by hosting their Jack and Jill up at
Waha this coming June. The festivities will include an
authentic rendition of our camp experience including
everything from the veggie tent, to a grove ball-esque social
and bon fires too...woooooo. Rest assured - no one will be
lacking for someone to s#*%w - I mean - SOMETHING TO
DO!!!
All of our love and thanks to the Nashmans, Thistlethwaites
and the entire Wahanowin family who without, there would
be no Phil and Shauna!

Alumni Day 2014
By Andrew Chris
One thing that all Camp Wahanowin alumni have in
common is a series of camp memories that can quickly
brighten any day. Most of us truly miss those carefree
days on Lake Couchiching, and few things can put a
smile on our face faster than running into an old camp
friend, seeing an old camp photo, or simply being
reminded of a moment from summers past.
In honour of the Camp Wahanowin 60th anniversary
season, all former campers and staff born in or prior to
1990 are cordially invited to return to the shores of
Lake Couchiching to relive old memories, and to create
new ones!
On Saturday, July 12, 2014, from 10:30am-4:30pm,
Camp Wahanowin will be opening its doors for a 60th
anniversary reunion that is not to be missed! Come
and join us for flagpole, lunch in the dining hall, a
classic Wahanowin sing-song, a visit to the tuck shop
(no letter home is required), and a tour of the new
theatre!
There will be lots of time to catch up with old friends,
and of course, a selection of Wahanowin's finest
activities will be open to alumni and their families
(spouses and children are encouraged to attend).
For those of you who want to relive your intercamp
glory days, there will be an alumni baseball game at
the Wahanodome and a basketball game at the
revamped basketball court. Anyone is welcome to
play!
The greatest, most rewarding part about working at
Wahanowin is the relationships we, as directors, get
to develop with our campers as they return each
summer. We get to witness our campers start off as
little, mischievous BBs and return as Bears then
Eagles then Seniors etc, maturing and growing into
young adults that embody confidence, independence
and a sense of fun and adventure, all traits that tend
to come along with The Wahanowin Experience. And
there really is nothing more special than having your
children, our next generation of campers, follow in your
footsteps and become part of our camp family.
Keeping traditions strong and remembering our roots,
while creating new memories, is something we truly
cherish and hold to high importance. So we want to
say thank you for helping us keep our traditions alive
by talking about Wahanowin, sharing your memories
and love for Wahanowin, and keeping us in the loop
with your post-camp life adventures.
Wahanowin Wannabes
As a way to help introduce new campers to Wahanowin, we are
offering sessions designed specifically to help make overnight
camp a smooth transition.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW
The story of how someone starts at camp, moves through their camp career and then heads out into the
world is more unique than one might imagine. I was fortunate to catch up with former Wahanowin Alumni,
Dani Maisels, the other day and got her story.
Pete Thistlethwaite: How’d you end up at Wahanowin?
Dani Maisels: I was a little late in my camping career to find my home (Wahanowin), because I actually went to another camp for a few years beforehand.
When I was 16, some of my friends were not going back and I still had the desire to be at camp. Over the years I had heard so many great things about
Wahanowin, and was excited to join the family as a CIT.
PT: Wow, that’s late to be joining another camp. No doubt you were anxious about stepping onto Wahanowin soil. Was it difficult making the transition?
DM: Yes, I was a little nervous, but I had a few friends who were at Waha so I had an in. To be honest, the people at Wahanowin, from my fellow CITs right
up to the Directors, made me feel welcome immediately. Making the decision to attend Wahanowin was one of the best experiences for my growth as a
person. The combination of being in a new environment and being ‘staff’ instead of a camper, allowed me to grow, develop and mature.
PT: I am happy to hear we were so inviting. Year one successful…check! And this lead to you returning for how many seasons?
DM: I returned as a JC in 1997 and stayed on until 2000 working my way up with “my girls” to LTP.
PT: Really, that’s pretty cool. I wondered when that trend of working with your kids up the units began. So, it’s been at least 15 years. I gotta ask - who were
"the girls"?
DM: I had the best girls in camp – Rikki Bennie, Sammy Goren, Miriam Balsam, Shauna Pernica, Jackie Prince, Jen Bluestein, Michele Davis, Karen
Vadasz, Ashley Davis, Jo Gallen… in no particular order of course. And with Matt German as the unit head for all three years I was incredibly lucky.
PT: Lots of personality in that group, no doubt some challenges in counselling them. When you look back, do you remember some of the hurdles you had to
overcome?
DM: We had a lot of fun, and despite the hormones of teenage girls, there were never any major issues. There was a general feeling of respect all around,
which curbed possible problems. I tried to tackle any concerns in an upfront and direct approach which turned out to be both successful and surprisingly
mature on my part (laughing)... While I think all of our natural inclinations was to hang out and tan every day, I really wanted them to make the most of
everything at camp. We did some hilarious [and not so safe] things at archery! And I couldn’t count how many times we turtled those poor Lasers.
PT: Interesting. I won’t ask about archery. It seems to me the best staff always get their campers to engage in all activities, despite their preconceived
notions. Is there anything you know for certain that you’ve taken away from camp, other than incredible memories?
DM: As a mother of two young boys, I know my counselling experience was like an early parenting course in making sure everyone is getting along and
growing from interactions with each other. All the responsibility of taking care of those girls has served me well in helping raise my little men.
PT: If I remember clearly, you had some theatrical and artistic talents.
DM: Artistic yes, but theatre was just for fun. I was always on set-duty for every play, and I created a few plaques at camp – Les Miserables, Scarlett
Pimpernel, Grease, Space Jam, and I think Beauty and the Beast. I also had small parts in a few Alex Moses productions, and hopefully I sang at least 50%
on key.
PT: Very cool, your name is on a few plaques in the D.H. And now, other than being a mom, are you up to anything professionally?
DM: Yeah, I followed my artistic skills and graduated OCAD with a degree in advertising. I worked and continue to do so as a senior Art Director for some of
the best ad agencies in the city. And just recently, I stepped back from the ad world and have been focusing on art – photography and painting.
PT: The producing art thing is very cool, not that working for an ad company isn’t. Tell me a little more about your "back to art" life.
DM: I have loved art since I was a toddler. With the arrival of kids, working ridiculous ad hours, plus travel was too much, so I scaled things back and started
doing more art. I just had a big show last weekend which was a lot of fun and incredibly successful – I even won an award for Top Photographer.
PT: Amazing – Wahanowin has a soon to be famous Artist who is an Alumni. Best of luck with that venture. Back to camp, how about a favourite dessert?
DM: (without hesitation) Chocolate Pudding with whip cream! THE best.
PT: Nice, I can relate. Is there anything you did as a staff you can tell me now that we didn’t know you did back then?
DM: Well, when the girls were in LTP, the female staff created a sorority. It was pretty funny as none of us had actually
been in one - we really just made everything up based on bad movies. I remember waking the girls up at 3 in the morning,
and taking them on a blindfolded obstacle course in the forest. There was a lot of shrieking and giggling. At one point we
convinced them there were snakes all around them. We ended up in the LTP lounge with a huge pile of tuck shop junk,
which was a pretty good middle-of-the-night snack. It was a great and memorable night.
