Together, we set and continually improve sales, service and operational standards. It is our mission to exceed our guest’s and employee’s expectations and maintain their loyalty for a lifetime. Dealer-Owner of Kupper Automotive, Bob Kupper, purchased Ressler Chevrolet and Ressler Subaru in 2011. Kupper had been running the business since 1999, when he started his buyout. Moving from sales to finance, to general managing, Kupper has been in the car business since 1987. Shortly after his Mandan buyout, Kupper acquired Bismarck Honda Nissan Hyundai in May of 2011 and changed the name to Bismarck Motor Company. In 2013, the dealership group was awarded the Volkswagen franchise. 2014 brought more expansion when plans were announced to move the Honda, Nissan and Volkswagen facilities to north Bismarck in June of 2015, occupying approximately 12.5 acres, housing the only in-dealership coffee shop in the state, PERKS, and creating around 50 new jobs. The Hyundai location joined the BMC north facilities in June of 2016, and a groundbreaking on the new addition to the facility will follow this fall 2016. Bismarck Tribune BEST OF THE BEST 2016 | 3 4 | BEST OF THE BEST 2016 Bismarck Tribune W elcome to Bismarck-Mandan’s Original Best of the Best! When I become the Tribune’s publisher in April we were in the midst of planning this year’s Best of the Best. I know readers love to share who they think has the best burger, who is your favorite professional and who are the widely respected service providers. People love to share their opinion on who makes the best french fries, where you’d recommend having an anniversary dinner or who has the best brew. In reviewing our categories it was obvious we should give readers, and the community of Bismarck-Mandan, a greater opportunity to select even more of their favorites. In doing so, we went from 63 categories to 166. That meant we also had to change the voting. This year we had three separate weeks of voting for specific areas of interest. In the first week of voting we saw a huge response! More votes were cast in one week than all of last year. That clearly showed BismarckMandan loved identifying their favorites in the area. The 2016 Best of the Best is the largest and has the most categories in our history! We hope you find Bismarck-Mandan’s original Best of the Best publication fun, entertaining and useful. Readers have spoken and shared who they feel are the tops in their industry, what foods they like and the places they enjoy the most. The businesses and individuals selected by the Bismarck-Mandan community should be proud. In the following pages they illustrate how they have developed a reputation and following to receive this prestigious honor. The Tribune’s 2016 Best of the Best provides a glimpse of what makes this community great. So, just as you step inside you’ll read four important words that keep us smiling: Best of the Best. Ground Round fans voted us best this year in the categories of Place for Lunch, Business Lunch, and Happy Hour. Their votes also led to an Honorable Mention for Kids Menu, Appetizers, Girls Night Out, Place to Have a Beer, and Dinner. It’s our humble pleasure, or not-so-humble boast, that we once again have the greatest customers we could ask for. We couldn’t be more proud of that. We look forward every year to The Bismarck Tribune’s Best of the Best Awards as a celebration of the friendships we’ve built with great service, knowing it starts each morning with walking through that front door. “In the restaurant business, we’re used to the revolving door,” Courtney Pfeifer, General Manager at The Ground Round in Bismarck, said as the lunch rush began to die down. “That’s why it’s not uncommon to see familiar faces around here.” Born in Chicago, Courtney hasn’t known Bismarck her whole life, but she feels like she has. After 14 years at The Ground Round, this has become her home. She’s celebrated the excitement of 14 football and hockey seasons around the bar. She’s spent 14 winters rushing out of the blustery cold ★ 526 S 3rd St., Bismarck, ND 58504 ★ 701-223-0000 ★ (Mon-Sun) 11 AM – 11 PM ★ groundround.com and into the warm conversations filling the restaurant. She’s watched her regulars get to know each other over 14 years of celebrating special occasions. Courtney has come to find out The Ground Round is the place where Bismarck does blind dates and anniversaries, graduation parties and retirement parties. It’s where friends grab drinks after work, where they catch up on years of missed conversations, and The good times• meeting place. where they unexpectedly meet new friends. Familiar faces are all around the restaurant. “I’m not the only one,” Courtney said. “We have a lot of employees who have been here for years. We even have some regulars who have been coming to The Ground Round longer than I’ve been here.” In a business where time passes as quickly as an order leaves the kitchen, and people come and go nearly as often, the team at The Ground Round has created something special. We aim for a family-friendly atmosphere, but we weren’t expecting the restaurant would become an extension of family for many, a home away from home for some — because that’s what it means to us. We thank you, Bismarck, for choosing us. Pretty soon, the summertime heat will fade. Football will stir in the fall air and fans will be pulling up a seat at The Ground Round to watch the games. Over wings and popcorn, laughs and cheers, the corner of 3rd Street and East Indiana Avenue will feel like home. It’s Courtney’s favorite time of the year. Our kitchen is buzzing to meet orders. Our booths are filled with families and friends. There’s hardly enough time to slow down and look around, but there’s not a moment lost. This is a time when friendships are forged and memories are made. A time that is simply the best. We hope to see you there. It’s a distinction that reaffirms to SpartanNash’s District Manager Joe Murphy that the move to acquire the local stores was a good one. “We’re seriously proud of being Best of the Best,” Murphy says. “That’s an award given to you by votes by the guests, so it couldn’t come from a better place.” Celebrating nearly 70 years Dan’s Supermarket began as Bismarck Supervalu in 1949 when Roy Rockstad and Eugene “Bus” Leary opened the store in downtown Bismarck at the current Radisson location at Sixth Street and Broadway. Beyond North Dakota, Dan’s owned and operated a store in Rapid City, South Dakota and three in Wyoming. The “Dan’s” name came from Minneapolisbased Supervalu’s fictional cartoon character “Super Dan the Value Man” used in marketing campaigns. In 1995, Dan’s ushered in a new era of grocery stores that would include a bank and other amenities when it moved Dan’s Kirkwood Supervalu to its current location on south Washington Street. The 65,000 square foot store cost $5 million and was the first to be named a “Supermarket” instead of a “Supervalu” store. In 2013, Dan’s opened a new location at Sunrise Town Centre in northeast Bismarck and then purchased and converted the Bismarck Central Market on West Turnpike shortly after selling its two Dickinson stores to SpartanNash Company. The 60-year Supervalu relationship terminated when SpartanNash purchased the Dan’s locations, and distribution moved to a SpartanNash warehouse in Fargo. “The ‘please’ and ‘thank yous’ of the world are going away. Nobody says it anymore, but we still push that at Dan’s Supermarket,” Olson said. “We want our customers to know we appreciate them coming in here.” He continued, “We hire young ages because we try to mold them for what we’re looking for in the culture of the business.” SpartanNash even allowed Dan’s Supermarket to keep its name because the employees took great pride in it. Dan’s Supermarket culture shines through Olson got an early start in understanding how to sell groceries when he began working for his parents’ small store at the age of nine. He says he likes taking care of customers and has a feel for what people want in their local grocery store. “It’s something I got into and enjoyed it. Once you find a job you like, getting up in the morning isn’t so bad,” he laughs. Olson’s mindset is a good match for Dan’s Supermarket culture as the company strives to listen to its customers and let its inventory be guided by consumer demand. With no bakery or deli and very few dairy items, the store was much smaller than Dan’s stores today, according to previous stories published in the Tribune. The company added another store at Arrowhead Shopping Plaza in 1953, and then expanded to a larger location within the mall in 1960 before opening Kirkwood Supervalu in south Bismarck in 1970. Five years later, Rockstad purchased Leary’s share of the company and it became a familyowned business. Rockstad’s son Terrance became president in 1977. Terrance is credited with growing the company based on customer demand and excellent service. Olson says that vision continues today as Dan’s works to provide customer satisfaction with clean, well-run stores and courteous employees providing fresh, quality products. Also in 1975, Century Supervalu opened north of Kmart until it was replaced with Gateway Supervalu in the current Hobby Lobby building in 1981. It moved to its current location north of Century Avenue in 2003. In 1993, all the stores changed their names to Dan’s Supermarket and became a corporation while being independently owned by Terrance Rockstad. The Mandan location opened in 1999. Bringing back the ‘please’ and ‘thank yous’ Olson, who has worked for the company for 39 years, says the buyout meant some different policies and dress codes, but Dan’s never wavered from the core philosophy put in place by the Rockstad family. Having started with the company as a teenager himself, Olson said he’s seen many 15-yearolds come work at Dan’s and make a career out of it because employees are taken care of and trained for more than just a job. When Terrance Rockstad and CEO Dennis Bosch chose to sell Dan’s Supermarkets to SpartanNash Company in 2015, it was after a more than 40-year run for them, and they chose to retire to spend more time with their families. “While I have enjoyed all my various roles and immersed myself in all the new challenges, it has been difficult to always balance my personal life with my professional life,” Rockstad said in a letter. “My family and also my friends are very important to me, and, this year, it just seemed like the right time to spend more time with both my wife, my daughter and all my treasured friends.” “If a customer walked into a big box store wanting a particular product they saw in a commercial or magazine ad, the store may do nothing because it’s going to carry the merchandise they’re told to carry by a bigger corporation,” Olson explains. “But we follow up on it. We try to find that item for the customer.” Servicing their patrons in this way is what Olson believes is the biggest difference between Dan’s and its competition. “We know we’re not the cheapest in town, but we’re also not the most expensive. You have to give it to them in the service — in the smiles, the ‘please’ and ‘thank yous,’ clean stores and parking lots, and the variety of product in the stores,” he said. “That’s how we win them over.” NORTH: H 3103 N 11th St. Bismarck, ND 58503 H 701-258-7791 H Hours: Open 24 hours H 3103 Yorktown Dr. Bismarck, ND 58503 H 701-751-7474 H Hours: (Mon-Sun) 6 AM — 10 PM CENTRAL: H 1122 N 3rd St. Bismarck, ND 58501 H 701-223-4766 H Hours: (Mon-Sun) 6:30 AM — 10 PM H 1190 W Turnpike Ave Bismarck, ND 58501 H 701-224-0037 H Hours: Open 24 hours SOUTH: H 835 S Washington St Bismarck, ND 58504 H 701-255-3517 H Hours: Open 24 hours MANDAN: H 500 Burlington St. SE Mandan, ND 58554 H 701-667-5748 H Hours: (Mon-Sun) 6 AM — 11 PM H dansupermarket.com The recent votes for Best Grocery Store prove the company has won over its guests, and Olson said management was very excited to get the news. “We appreciate the customers voting for us and the minute we received the information that we won, we gave it to Joe (Murphy) and SpartanNash sent out a notice to the whole company,” Olson said. With six local locations, Olson said he often hears people claim that Dan’s doesn’t have much competition, but he disagrees since even gas stations and pharmacies sell groceries. Olson said Dan’s management has always aimed to improve upon things, and when SpartanNash took over, remerchandising the north store near Century Avenue and State Street was a continuation of that commitment. Murphy views that renovation as one of the highlights of the company’s first year in Bismarck. “I’ve seen a lot of businesses come and go out of Bismarck, so we must have been doing something right to be an independent business — and now a corporation — to stick around,” Olson said. “It’s an accomplishment to do the right thing for the customers.” BEST OF THE BEST 2016 | 15 Bismarck Tribune THANK YOU FOR VOTING US Dans SuperMarket would like to thank our customers in the Bismarck/Mandan area for their continued trust.
