Using Verified Definition. Tell students that now you will revise
your original sentence. Say: Now Tm going to revise my original
sentence so it has the sense of looking out from a high place to a
view in the distance. Can you picture me at a scenic overlook looking out over hundreds of miles to a range ofsnow-capped mountains? On the map, write a revised sentence using the dictionary

Guided Practice
Give students each a copy of the PAVE Map. Choosing a possibly unfamiliar target word from a reading or content-area
textbook, guide students through the steps of the PAVE Procedure as described above. This time, as you model filling in the

pictures. People like to take pictures of nice views. Print the pre-

"nice view." Here
is my sentence: "From our motel room, we can see a vista of the
parking lot." Print the sentence on the map.
On the map, point to and read aloud Step 5, Word's Dictionary
Definition. Say: Now, I am going to use a dictionary to verifY my
predicted meaning of the word vista. I've got to be sure to choose
a definition that makes sense in the context of the sentence in which
the word is used. First, I am going to check all definitions and
find the one that is closestin meaning. Read aloud the following
sample dictionary entry:
vista 1. A beautiful, distant view from a high place. 2. A
mental picture of a series of events in the past or future.
Say: It looks like the first definition of vista,
'a beautiful,
distant
view from a high place" is the one I should use. In my predicted
definition, I thought vista meant "nice view. " But to be more precise, a vista is more than a nice view. It is a distant view from
a high place. I think a scenic overlook or the top of a mountain
would be a good place to see a vista. I am going to write the dictionary definition for vista on the map. On the map, write the
definition, "a beautiful, distant view from a high place."
