Is there a pair for everyone? Join Luna and The Cobbler in this quirky visual piece, inspired by Tim Burton’s poetry, on a journey to find the perfect solemates. Using beautiful music, poetry and physical theatre, watch these loveable lonely misfits embrace their weird and wonderful inner selves, face their fears and find their sense of purpose. T SUNDAY 1.15pm - 2pm • 3.45pm - 4.30pm Once Around the Sun Burnley Youth Theatre Join Willow – traveller, explorer and story collector – on an adventure as she travels for 365 days over land and sea to hear stories from different cultures. Journey with Willow as she meets new friends, celebrates their festivals and brings different cultures together to create new stories. This magical, sensory production uses storytelling and live music to explore cross-cultural tales engage 0–5’s and their families. T SUNDAY 12noon - 12.45pm • 2.30pm - 3.15pm 6 Oxheys Mill Studios Celebrating our 5th birthday, a packed weekend offers Open Studios, live performances and drop-in taster sessions, alongside an exhibition exploring Preston’s rich textile heritage. Follow the wool trail in this collaborative project: the exhibition features soft sculpture made from wool fleece along with a hand-drawn map of Preston illustrating the importance of textiles and the connections in the city and see how the sheep were sheared. Watch as a fleece is spun in a live performance then get involved and make your own items using a traditional loom and spinning wheel. Alternatively, why not try weaving, needlefelt, life drawing, music or yoga. Artistmade cake available while it lasts! Each is a historic ballad arranged and performed live alongside puppetry and simple illustrations, drawing out the tales before your eyes! T Woolley Thinking History within the art Rock Hart Brohemia – “The World Within” – National and International performers from across Lancashire introduce you to Male Masculinity Boylesque. Boylesque Workshop – Come along and try the classic and basic traditional burlesque techniques that are normally performed by women. In the World of Burlesque, the techniques have been developed and adapted for men. Talk – “History of the Music Halls” – Promoting the ‘Art of Tease’. Gain a better understanding of a lost art form. The talk looks at the history of the Burlesque and Cabaret movements within Preston and how it’s now being developed. How men are performing in what is generally recognised as a female world. SUNDAY 2.30pm - 4.30pm Core “part 1” Urban Conceptz Theatre with young people from Blackburn commissioned by Lancaster Arts and Big Imaginations Core “part 1” is a coming together of two generations, a blend of raw movement, spoken word and electronic music. The performers dance, swing and defy gravity as they clamber their way through a bespoke scaffolding structure. 10 An enchanting story set in a gently comic dystopian future, at a time where survival relies on sharp eyes, quick hands, and above all, friendship. But beware the night-fall - then the forest imps all come out - called out with drum beats to play with living fire! Signed Voices Deafway Discover the real life stories and experiences of Deaf people living across the North West in a weekend of signed voices. From the Deaflympics to near death experiences, from childbirth to baking for diabetics – local charity Deafway have worked with around 200 Deaf participants to capture their stories. Apparitions hover in doorways, linger round windows and lurk on roof-tops. Fragile ghosts of humans, fish and micro marine organisms infiltrate city centres. Come into the dark and experience the story of headless women on the moors near Longridge and mysterious lands hidden behind the mists of Morecambe Bay. Then enter a magical world of peep boxes where you can bring the stories to life for yourself. Tin Can People Follow a journey of dream sequences where we meet enchanted gypsies, beefeater bears and take job opportunities. We leave a small reclusive village and end up in a city. Through the chaos we look into crystal balls and we turn to the moon for answers. Maybe there aren’t any answers, maybe this is an illusion. Whatever it is, lets enjoy being here, together. Light and Dark UCLan Explore Light and Dark through cutting-edge scientific research in astrophysics from the University of Central Lancashire. In the “From the Earth to the Sun” installation, see your closest star as never before through the eyes of NASA’s satellite mission, the Solar Dynamic Observatory. We’ll be making the brightest eye-catching installation under the Peoples Canopies out of paper. Cutting, folding, stapling . . . you’ll be amazed what a simple piece of paper can turn into. We’ll show you how to make your own bit for the display and you can make something to take home too. Adults and children welcome. 20 Surgeon’sCourt Puppet Improv A series of very temporary, site specific installations by renowned environmental artist Steve Messam, sited across a number of familiar locations in Lancashire, with the very first here in Preston. A rising tide of the colour red. By day the significant scale of this solid mass will make it very visable. By night, internal illuminations together with coloured washes will saturate the immediate area with red light creating an immersive, monochrome experience. The Red Rose in Preston’s Surgeons Court, will transform the often overlooked historic narrow alleyway, with an installation of over 4,000 bright red balloons. Transforming something everyday and inconspicuous into a thing of wonder. The balloons will fill the space between the buildings for the entire length of one block - from Fox Street to Lune Street. Brace Yourselves is a site-specific dance theatre performance piece that dares to break those rules. SUNDAY 12.15pm - 12.35pm • 3.45pm - 4.05pm Brian Slater 27 7 9 ProcessionofLight Saturday24thSeptember 8pm start Building on the tradition of the Preston Guild torchlight procession one of the highlights of Lancashire Encounter will be the Procession of Light. The exciting procession will illuminate Lancashire’s Spirit of Invention, taking inspiration from Lancashire’s industrial heritage and the 200th anniversary of Preston’s illumination by Gas Light through to modern day jet engines and drones. Inspired by Lancashire’s ‘Make It’ ethos, organisations and businesses from across Lancashire have come together to create and make a spectacle of light. Procession Producers Big Difference Company have been working with local groups to create a couple of large scale pieces and supported ET Police Division groups to realise their ideas.
