YOUR COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER | June 2016 | No.173 THE COATESVILLE CHRONICLE Decision Time Coatesville Pony Club’s Gemma Hampson in the final stages of the cross country course Eventing success The end of the season has brought with it some terrific rewards for three local equestrians. Former Coatesville School pupil, Gemma Hampson now 18 years old and taking a gap year to work at a Sport Horse Stud, has just nailed the holy grail of eventing. Gemma beat tough competition to take first place in the Cross Country 1*(CC1*) Open at the NRM National Three Day Event at Taupo held in May. Gemma instructs juniors at Coatesville Pony Club and has single-handedly produced her amazing mare, ‘Just Imagine That’ – better known around the club as ‘Shazza.’ Also at Taupo and claiming excellent results was local rider, 21-year-old Massey University student, Lauren Alexander who competed with two horses, BMW Ripley and Classic Indigo. Lauren 0272 984 000 claimed victory in the CC1* class with Classic Indigo who also took out the Charlton Stud prize for Best Performed Mare. Lauren also rode into third place with BMW Ripley in the CC1* class. Meanwhile, 14-year-old Coatesville Pony Club member and Pinehurst student, Ruby Sattler took her horse, Diamond Cheval to the South Island to compete as a member of the Waitemata Rodney Eventing Team. Ruby helped to take out first place in the Highest Placed Team of 2 Riders MT (14 yrs) with the Waitemata Rodney team being placed second in the Area Teams Championship Challenge Cup Award. The local riding community and beyond offer their hearty congratulations to these riders and all other local riders who have had a great season. By Louise Sneddon PROUDLY SPONSORS THE COATESVILLE CHRONICLE Coatesville residents and ratepayers will soon be asked to vote over whether or not they support the introduction of transferable titles in a referendum run by the CRRA. Although a large number of people opposed transferable titles at a public meeting held earlier this year, CRRA chairman Mike Rowe says it is possible that group did not reflect the majority of the community. Organisers hope to engage a larger percentage of the Coatesville community with the referendum. The cut-off day for votes will be 6 July and once votes are counted, the CRRA will base ongoing discussions with Auckland Council on the results. Similar to the CRRA survey held earlier this year, the referendum voting papers will be dropped in Coatesville letterboxes and can be returned by post or to the Coatesville dairy. Voting will also be available online at www. coatesville.org.nz. See page 9 for a definition of transferable titles. INSIDE YOUR JUNE ISSUE CRRA AGM, Fieldays feature, Garden tips, How to weed waterways Editorial Letters We welcome letters to the editor from our readers. Email your letter to coatesvillechronicle@gmail. com. Please keep it under 200 words and be prepared to sign your name. Vanessa Johnson (left) and Tina Coombes Earlier this year the CRRA held a survey and roughly 20 percent of Coatesville’s population responded. Later this month they’re holding a referedum to determine what Coatesville people think of transferable titles. The outcome of the referendum will be used to lobby Auckland Council. This time it would be great to see a much larger number of votes cast before the deadline, so the CRRA can proceed knowing they really are representing the majority’s view on the issue of transferable titles. Look out for the voting paper in your letterbox. Voting closes on 6 July. Department of Cycling – Open Letter As Chairman of The Department of Cycling, I wanted to introduce our Club to the local community – not only to raise awareness for our Club, but to offer up some assurances to some quite vocal opponents to the presence of cyclists in the area. The Department of Cycling itself (known as DOC) isn’t a local branch of government, but a fully incorporated Society made up of hundreds of members – all with an interest in cycling, and with a healthy social aspect to our activities and events. Some of our members are also residents of Coatesville and Riverhead. Local social media highlights the strong views of some – but these will see in time, that the growth in cycling is not only for commuting, but also leisure, and is set to continue. This is where DOC excels and we have great fun along the way. Our regular bunch rides from Westgate include Coatesville probably less than once a month. Typically our groups are split to have less exposure to traffic and also to ensure we are not a hazard either. We are a disciplined bunch of men and women, who are all motorists too – so we all experience of inconsiderate cyclists! Our groups though, will always move into single line when cars are heard approaching from behind, we want to be safe too. Look out for DOC in our distinctive black and green kit and give us a wave, but you will need to be up early to catch us. Our bunch rides leave at 8am on Saturdays and 7.30am on Sundays. You are welcome to come along on either day, we run shorter rides in addition to training rides for longer endurance races – take a look at www. departmentofcycling.com or on Facebook. Nigel Hunt, Chairman, Department of Cycling Specialists in plants for rural properties nurseries www.mckechnienurseries.co.nz 415 8806 [email protected] John de Vere from the Coatesville Rezoning Group responds to France Komoroske’s letter in the May issue of the Chronicle: About three years ago when the Unitary Plan was being drafted, it was noticed that the Highway had split Coatesville into different zoning when in all practicality they are the same. Of the 1040 (letterboxes) properties which make up Coatesville, no-one really farms anymore. The 150 properties on the forest side represent a small fraction of Coatesville with 40 of them less than 4 hectares. With justification, most people on the west side felt that this situation was simply not fair with both sides treated differently. The CRRA felt the whole valley should be zoned the same as the “horse had truly bolted” about 25 years ago regarding viable farming. A large percentage are professionals and managers! The core of the matter is equality of zoning for Coatesville. Boffa Miskell, planners, calculated the number of extra properties on the west side as being 100. The east side of the Highway with many times more properties could be perhaps 500-plus more houses. Why would a small group of people on the east side be so vehemently opposed to those on the west of the highway having equality? The real influx of population growth will happen on the (city) side and perhaps before its too late Ms Komoroske should focus on what is happening now on her side and lobby council to revert the city side back to rural. THE COATESVILLE CHRONICLE | June 2016 | 3 Cheers Core Clinic Three months after opening their doors in Albany, podiatry, physiotherapy and acupuncture specialists, Core Clinic, cleared the diary to celebrate with friends and family. Business owner and podiatrist Kylie McCaw says the first quarter has been super-busy with plenty of Coatesville people booking appointments for foot checks and treatments. She says patients, especially mums with young families, often ask about their children’s feet during a treatment so Core Clinic has come up with a special offer for parents with children aged under 16 years. Book your child in for a foot check and for $20 you can find out whether junior’s feet are normal. For more information, or to book an appointment, phone 414 7278. Offer ends 30 June. Say No to bullies Coatesville School kids took part in a new national initiative called Pink Shirt Day on Friday, 20 May to help stamp out bullying at schools. Students were invited to wear something pink in support of the cause - including the boys! Off to school Sarah Clifton has bid us farewell as her five-year-old daugther Jasmine jumps the fence and joins brother Jake at Coatesville School. Sarah joined Playcentre back in 2011 with Jake and immersed herself and her family (thanks Dave for all that painting and work around the place) into the Playcentre environment. Sarah instantly brought passion and creative flare. Thanks Sarah for your contribution and friendship and for all the hard work and effort in getting the recent renovation project up and running. We look forward to showing you around and making you a coffee when you pop in. Debbie Skillcorn, Coatesville Playcentre. Quiz night Coatesville School PFA will host a fundraising quiz night on 2 July at the Coatesville Settlers Hall from 7pm. The next step will be in two or three months time and will include the planting of native trees under a plan provided by Victoria Arundel and Kim Horgan. Sad loss Long-time Coatesville resident, Bruce Conyngham, passed away on Sunday, 8 May, aged 88 years. Bruce and his family moved to Coatesville in 1984 and lived here for 27 years. During his career as an obstetrician and gynaecologist, Bruce delivered hundreds of babies both in New Zealand and in India where he worked for several years. Jan, his wife of 54 years, says it seemed fitting that he passed away on Mothers Day as he worked so closely with mothers-to-be for so much of his life. Bruce was a man of deep faith who adored music and sang in the prestigious Auckland Dorian Choir. He is survived by Jan and their four children; Sally, Victoria, Alistair and Gabby together with 15 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Wild wooders Coatesville kids go pink for a good cause Volunteers turned out again on 17 May at the Wild Wood community project on the Coatesville Reserve for the third day of weed and tree work and to date 16 large trailer loads of trash and trimmings have been removed from the site. We’ve also had a couple of camps for our older scouts. Senior Scouts Jared Main and Oliver accompanied by Andy Stone undertook their Explorer Challenge for their Chief Scout’s Award during the last week of the school holidays. They planned a Target shooting three-night expedition using three different modes of transport and explored Tawharanui Regional Park on foot and on mountain bikes. Joseph Easley, our senior Venturer, travelled with the scouts as overseer and to ensure the boys travelled the kilometres required for the challenge. The scouts reported back that Tawharanui was a really beautiful place and they had a fantastic few days, with great weather for camping and exploring the park. They would also like to thank Joseph for volunteering his time and assistance. In mid May three of our older scouts attended the Waikato Adventure Camp at Piopio. This is an extremely physical camp and only experienced scouts over 12 ½ years old are invited to attend. This year 244 scouts from 51 scout groups attended and participated in activities such as flying fox, shooting, abseiling , caving , quad bikes, archery, grass skiing as well as getting taken by off-road 4-wheel drive vehicles for a trip to the far end of the farm. The camp is held on a huge, remote farm (station) in the hills beyond Piopio that has its own driveway of over 5km just to get to the camping area. On sunny days you can see east to Mt Ruapehu and west to Mt Taranaki. Scouts Oliver Burton, Andy Stone and Finn Hoban had a great weekend, and also all Off-road 4WD mega mud-fest achieved their Navigator and Camp Cook badges. There were some fantastic desserts at this camp with Andy’s stewed rhubarb and custard and Finn’s steamed pudding both highlights. Huge thanks go to Andy’s dad Keith Stone for transporting us, and towing the trailer of gear to and from camp - a 4 ½ hour journey each way. Next month will be our annual camp and working bee on the Coatesville Reserve and our Jamboree scouts will be fundraising. We would welcome your support to help get our scouts to Jamboree. Admittedly Fieldays are focused on New Zealand’s primary sector and some weighty agribusiness issues, but there really is something for everyone - even lifestyle block owners - at the landmark event held from 15-18 June at Mystery Creek Events Centre. Everything from educating kids in the Heritage Village, which shows how New Zealand’s pioneers first farmed the land, to the latest innovation and technology advancements in the Fieldays Innovations Centre. Many of these exhibitors will introduce new inventions to the marketplace and awards are presented to the best, like Ubco’s e-bike which won an innovation award in 2013. Fieldays Kiwi’s Best Kitchen features 2010 Masterchef winner, Brett McGregor and other celebrity chefs such as Alyson Gofton and Chelsea Winter who will demonstrate their skills with Kiwi fare from some new and emerging brands. Eight finalists will compete for the Fieldays Rural Bachelor Award based on skills, attitude and all round charisma. This is bound to be a crowd pleaser. If you make 2016 your first Fieldays visit, prepare for a big day. This is the largest agricultural expo in the southern hemisphere. Last year there were 1008 exhibitors across 1457 sites and 126,063 visitors passed through the gates. We spoke to four local companies who are exhibitting and/or celebrating Fieldays 2016 with some exciting special offers for Coatesville Chronicle readers. Designed and made in Godzone, the Ubco is a testament to both Kiwi ingenuity and the Mystery Creek Fieldays Innovation process. Sparked by a visit to the 2013 fieldays with a fat-tyred e-bike, a prototype was designed and built for the 2014 Mystery Creek event which scooped two of the three innovation awards for that year, providing funding and support for development. The Ubco is a lightweight motorcycle with two powered wheels, with a 50v 40ah Lithium Ion Battery providing an average operating range of 80 to 100km on one charge. A full charge will typically cost less than a dollar and take roughly six hours, with little maintenance needed. We would like to offer the Coatesville and surrounding residents the opportunity to ride and test the Ubco either on their own property or at an open day in the village. The Ubco is surprisingly smooth, quiet and comfortable to ride, with full torque available at low speed which allows slopes to be ridden at a controlled and comfortable rate. It’s been almost three years since the Proposed Auckland Unitary Plan was introduced and there has been extensive and expensive input on it. Despite that, Auckland Council staff have not budged from their original recommendation; to not rezone the north side of the Coatesville-Riverhead Highway to Countryside Living and to allow transferable titles on the south side. This means that residents in half of the community will be able to subdivide their property down to one-hectare lots, while the other half cannot. If these recommendations are included in the final Unitary Plan, then we can expect the doubling, or even tripling, of Coatesville’s population, with all the attendant problems such intensive development will bring. On 28 April, a group of Coatesville residents opposed to more intensive development appeared before the Independent Hearings Panel at its headquarters on Queen Street. They testified about the problems that would result if the rezoning requests submitted by the Coatesville Rezoning Group and by the Coatesville Residents & Ratepayers Association were granted. This would have allowed all of Coatesville to be chopped into one-hectare lots through the use of transferable titles. The Panel appeared receptive to our concerns. On 13 May, Council staff issued their final recommendations to the Panel, which were against rezoning the north side of the Highway and in favor of transferable titles on the south Ballet Classes Kate Hattaway relaxation massage For 5-7 Years Affordable treat, affordable gift (vouchers available), can't afford not to!! Because the majority of residents who attended the CRRA committee’s extraordinary meeting on 16 March had voted against the use of transferable titles anywhere in Coatesville, I approached the committee to see if it would collaborate with those of us against transferable titles in making our opposition known to the Auckland Council before the Unitary Plan took effect. The committee initially unanimously refused my request at their meeting on 13 May, but later agreed to meet with us informally to discuss the matter. We did this on 1 June, where it was agreed we would canvass the community to determine whether the majority of Coatesville residents were for or against transferable titles. This will be done via a referendum which will be sent to every household in Coatesville. If the majority of residents vote against transferable titles, then the CRRA committee will formally notify the Auckland Council of the Association’s objection. The voting process will be completed in time to submit to the Auckland Council on 22 July, when the Independent Hearings Panel will also be submitting its recommendations to the Council. We hope the Auckland Council will be receptive to our concerns because Council staff have already recognised the problems inherent in such rampant growth in rural areas, especially the lack of infrastructure to deal with it. There are many adjacent communities where that growth is appropriate (such as Dairy Flat and Riverhead), while there are others where it is not (such as Paremoremo and Albany Heights), where transferable titles will not apply. Despite the fact Council staff have ignored our concerns over this issue for the past year, we expect more from our elected representatives on the Auckland Council. Please join us in having your voice heard by voting in the referendum. Transferable Titles explained The “transferable title rule” gives a landowner the right to transfer the ability to subdivide land from one property to another subject to meeting certain criteria. How it would work in Coatesville is that a resident purchases vacant land somewhere outside of Coatesville and agrees not to develop it (the “donor site”) in exchange for the ability to subdivide the resident’s land in Coatesville down to one hectare (the “recipient site”). Under the proposed Unitary Plan as currently structured, only those residents living in an area zoned Countryside Living can take advantage of the rule. Ailsa’s Do not do list The following list are the seven things you shouldn’t do when selling your home. 1. Don’t... skip the marketing 2. Don’t... do it alone, unless you know what you’re doing. 3. Don’t... neglect to fix things that are broken. 4. Don’t... get emotionally involved. 5. Don’t... leave your personal stuff lying around for viewings. 6. Don’t... get offended by a low offer - it’s not where an offer starts but where it ends that matters. 7. Don’t... lose a sale over small items that could be a win-win. THE COATESVILLE CHRONICLE | June 2016 | 9 Garden to do list The Coatesville Country Garden Club are experts in all things botanical. In this issue, deputy chairperson Robyn Jobling reminds us there’s still plenty to do in the garden before winter drives you inside. What a wonderful- and lingeringsummer it has been, but now it’s time to welcome the autumnal flush of colour with cooler nights. And, with cooler temperatures, it’s the time for reflection on the trials and triumphs of the garden. Problem areas These may be in need of a rethink. Does the area need relandscaping or do unsuitable plants need removing and those plants that have thrived need replicating? Would the lower level plants benefit from the taller shrubs and trees having lower branches removed to allow sun to those below? Planting Now is the ideal time to plant new trees, shrubs, perennials and bulbs while the ground is still warm and plants have enough time to get their roots established before the cold winter. Remember to dig a new planting hole twice the size of the root ball and add a spadeful of well rotted compost. Bulbs need to be planted to a depth of two or three times their height ready for a blaze of colour in spring. Dividing Dividing perennials now and spreading them around the garden not only gives new vigour to the original plant, but makes for continuity from one bed to another. Most perennials e.g. Rudbeckias and Asters, can be divided by using back-to-back forks and gently prising the roots apart. Plants like Salvias and Penstemons that spread outwards from the centre, benefit from replanting the outer healthy shoots while discarding the old inner roots. Large clumps of grasslike plants such as Miscanthus, Lomandra, Libertia, Dietes or Carex can be completely dug up, divided with a spade, or axe, trimmed down and replanted. However, they must still be in good-sized clumps otherwise they won’t thrive. Pruning When shrubs go yellow or to seed, the sap is being drawn down to the roots and it’s time to cut down or trim them. Some need a good trim and reshape while Hydrangeas require pruning down to a double Your lifestyle block machinery experts bud, i.e. one bud on each side of the stem. Most perennials are cut to the ground. Now is the time for a last hedge prune till spring. Remove the clippings to allow air and sun in to prevent rot. Mulching Mulch overly frost-sensitive plants like Hostas and around Roses and Rhubarb, in fact mulching most plants tucks them up for winter protection. Vegetable gardens These really benefit from a nitrogen producing crop being planted on unused areas - be it Mustard, Lupins or a mixture. When Winter comes gardeners can enjoy a relaxing break from gardening but, watch out, it won’t be long till ot’s time to get started again! Guest Speaker Tuesday, 5 July, 11.00 am Coatesville Hall Jack Hobbs, Director of the Auckland Botanic Gardens will speak on new research work at the Botanic Gardens and also on his recent trip to the Chatham Islands. All welcome. Please bring a small plate for a shared lunch afterwards. CHECK OUR Fieldays DEALS ON NOW Thinking of buying a ride on? Treatm by Waterow NZ Ltd 10 | THE COATESVILLE CHRONICLE | June 2016 Ask the Expert This month’s expert is Greg Hoskins, Senior Biosecurity Advisor from the Auckland Council Weeds in waterways How can you best remove weeds such as Old Man’s Beard from waterways which have already started to revert to native rushes and cabbage trees, without damaging the native plants or affecting water quality? Asks reader, Jane Steele. Greg replies: There is a wide range of creeping and climbing plants that can invade bush along our waterways. Some of the more common plants that fit into this category include Elaeagnus, Jasmine, Old Man’s Beard, Cathedral Bells, Banana Passionfruit, Japanese Honeysuckle, Climbing Asparagus, Smilax, Moth Plant, Blue Morning Glory, Ivy and Mignonette Vine. These plants smother trees from the ground level up, eventually causing the host trees to collapse. They can spread into bush from the margins or grow from seed or plant material dispersed into the bush from nearby sources. Old Man’s Beard and Cathedral Bells are both fast growing dense vines, which are not widespread in Auckland yet. If either is found, please report it immediately to the Auckland Council on 09 301 0101. There are many different ways of controlling pest plants, and the one used will depend on the type of plant, the size of the infestation and the type of habitat. Small, scattered plants can be dug out, making sure that any plants that produce tubers such as Climbing Asparagus, Smilax and Mignonette Vine also have tubers collected and removed along with the plant. Plant material and tubers need to be disposed of safely as they can regrow into new plants. Controlling weeds near waterways or in wetlands can be difficult as only a few herbicides target water weeds. Ways to reduce the risk of herbicides causing non-target damage or contaminating water is to stem inject, drill and frill, or cut and paint. Herbicide is injected into holes drilled in the stems or painted onto cuts in the bark. The herbicide can be applied directly onto the cut stump using a paint brush, drench gun, trigger sprayer or using a pre-mix gel such as Cut’n Paste. Vial treatment can be used on vines by cutting the vine and placing the vial of chemical over the end of the cut vine. If spraying, the choice of herbicide is very important and where possible use selective non-residual sprays using larger droplets and a surfactant to reduce drift. For more information on pest plants, fact sheets are available for each pest plant giving control options, plant descriptions and pest plant status. Pest fact sheets are available from Huapai and Helensville service centres as well as local farm supply companies or visit the plant search site online: www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/ plantsearch.
