Page 1 Forked River Tuna Club TUNA TIMES/ APRIL 2013 APRIL 2013 Editor: Mike Wanca, Staff: Bob West PC, Marion Spielberger S E M I T A N U T Commodore Jerry Felitti Here we are---rapidly approaching spring---lots to do at the club for this year’s spring clean-up, which is on April 20 at 8:00 A.M. Any and ALL help is greatly appreciated, with the Chili cook-off to follow at 2:00 P.M. We’ve been busy partying at the club, what with Spaghetti Night, and Sully’s St. Patrick’s Party, which was a great time as usual---thanks Chris and Jeannie for a great evening. (I would also like to thank Casey and Ryan Sullivan for their expert waitering abilities---great job boys.) The Stripe Bass Seminar was very informative and fun. Tony Maja did a terrific job for us as usual. Thanks to Ron and Dan Tholen and Lacey Marine. There will be an Open House on March 23 and it would be great to see a large turnout to bring in new members and introduce them to the club. Please see Dan Tholen’s column and plan to attend. PC Mike Hathazi has repaired the inside foyer door and installed a closer to keep it shut as we lock up and alarm the club; he has also repaired the French door into the bar area. Thanks, Mike. At the BOG meeting of March 14, the club decided to join the Lacey Chamber of Commerce---this will be another way to network the club, get our name out in some diverse venues, and take part in the business community. I have met with the Knights of Columbus from Lacey Road, and they will be providing us prospective clients for the rental of our facility so that we may reap some income from these rentals. They will refer clients to us in the event their facility is booked, and together with our Vice-Commodore Dan Tholen, I will liaise with the Knights. Please keep our club in mind if any friends or relatives may like to rent the club for their party. Don’t forget to register with the Saltwater Registry for your saltwater license—they are aggressively checking anglers for their license, both on the water and from the shore. (I recently saw them checking the anglers at the Oyster Creek Bridge on Rt. 9.) March is colon awareness month. Our Safety Officer Ken Devlin, together with Earl Etzel have arranged for a guest speaker to address us at the General Membership Meeting on March 22. Hi is a gastroenterologist and I am sure will be very informative, and will answer any questions we may have. The Ladies Club will be joining us for this presentation. Who is doing a great job of keeping us busy...and Sully’s Fish Fry on April 13 should not be missed. Plan on fishing our upcoming tournaments—see the calendar for dates and deadlines. Uncle Floyd on May 18---Comedy Night. The Heckler’s have many surprises for us, so be sure to check out their selection of club gear at the club. I would like to wish everyone a very Happy Easter season and Easter Sunday. See you at the club…………………. Vice Commodore Dan Tholen SPRING is here and there is a lot to do at the club this month! This Friday is our General Membership Meeting. On Saturday, March 23rd the Bridge is hosting an Open House to try to gain some new members to help keep our dues down. Please print attached flyer and hand them to friends or at local businesses you think might be interested. Even if you do not have anyone to bring, PLEASE come down and SUPPORT your club and let's show folks what the FRTC is about. Friday night, April 5th, Fleet Captain Jim Candia is hosting an Hawaiian Shirt Night which should be a lot of fun. April 11th is our BOG, the 13th is Sully's Fish Fry, and on April 20th there will be a Work Party at 8 AM and the Chili Cookoff is at 2PM. I would like to thank everyone who helped with the Seminar especially Paul Lenzo who was our MC. We raised some money for the local High School Fishing Clubs and had a great time doing so. The Past Commodore & Past President Dinner is Saturday, June 1st. I do not know the cost yet, but will be about $30 per person. If you would like to attend, please, let me know or sign up at the club. This is one of the most traditional events in the club and I hope to see more members there from previous years. Also, in June is the Luau Pig Roast on the 29th. It will be an Annual Pig Roast with an Hawaiian theme so make sure you have your Hawaiian Shirts ready! Our Soft Rentals agreement and brochures are completed. If you know of anyone who might be interested in renting the club for an outside rental, please, direct them to me, Commodore Jerry Felitti, or our website. All of the info, including pictures, are online. There is also a large binder at the club that will be near the front door with more info and pictures. See you at the club. SAVE THE DATE May 4th, Armed Forces Dinner. For more info and reservations contact Skip Malick. Page 3 TUNA TIMES/ APRIL 2013 Fleet Captain Jim Candia Finally, Spring has sprung and prime boating/fishing weather is here. Fans might also note that baseball season starts, too. So, coming up on May 2nd we have a picnic at a Lakewood BlueClaws game. This was a great event last year and we filled up pretty quickly, so let me know ASAP if you want in. Tickets are $24.95 per adult and $19.95 for juniors (5-12). There is no charge for children under 5. The winery brunch did not work out. When I called to confirm the number of participants I was told there would be no brunch for several months. Not sure what happened there, perhaps we'll try again in the fall. Winemaking is still in the works . I'm hoping to attend an open house at Bacchus to help us select a grape variety. More details to follow in April. Please let me know if you are interested in participating. The wine will run between $10-13/bottle. A barrel holds around 250 bottles, so we need a few more participants to share in the effort and reward of winemaking.
