They were playing at the Rolling Green Golf Club, a magnificent golf course designed by William Flynn. The greens were very fast and there are sand bunkers deep enough for a foundation of a house. There were 1,381 entries from qualified golfers. To be eligible they need to have a handicap index of 5.4 or averaging a score of 78 for an 18 hole round of golf. The youngest entrant was 11 years old. The oldest entrant was 58 years old. Twenty four of the competitors were qualified to play based upon a good performance at other events. The other 1,357 golfers had to qualify through local tournaments first and then survive and qualify through 36 holes of stroke play. Eventually 64 golfers would begin match play and keep playing until only the champion was left undefeated. You might be able to get an idea of how competitive this level of golf can be. There were ladies from over 20 different countries. There is no prize money as it is an amateur event but a good performance in this tournament can be an- other step along the way to a bright future as a professional golfer. If you follow women’s golf you’ll recognize the name Lydia Ko. She was one of the recent winners of this tournament. There is something about watching the best in the world regardless of what they do. The admission was free and if you didn’t mind parking a little way from the golf course you were able to watch some amazingly good golf. Fox Sports had great coverage of the tournament along with interviews by Holly Sonders who you may remember from the Golf Channel. Although there weren’t any local ladies playing this year the possibility does exist that some day soon we may be cheering on someone from our community. As a teacher and coach the importance of one shot is often mentioned to students and team members. At the final qualifying event 9 ladies were tied and had to play in sudden death for 5 spots. Golf is a test of not only skill but endurance, confidence and patience. Best wishes for the rest of this golf season. Junior Golf At Fern Hall Inn Should you happen to visit Fern Hall Inn on Friday during the summer season you might be surprised to find you are sharing the space with over 100 boys and girls during the course of the 8 week junior golf program. Now in it’s sixth season the program had a start with 56 boys and girls and has grown in number each year. The program charges the students $60 and requires each student to register with the LPGA Girls Golf program as they award a grant to the program based upon the number of golfers. Also there is insurance coverage from the LPGA should an accident occur. Fortunately there has not been any injuries reported and the staff is always aware of the possibility an accident could occur if a student swings a club or hits a ball too close to another person. Students are taught not only the fundamentals of a good golf swing: grip, alignment and stance, but also the etiquette or manners expected of golfer with the other players and the care of the golf course. Rules define the game and the knowledge of the rules can sometimes help in a difficult situation. The clinic is staffed with golf professionals, college players and high school players also. Bill Stutzman is a PGA Life Member and currently employed at the Elkview Country Club. Art McLain is the golf professional at Fern Hall Inn and the golf coach of the Forest City Regional High School golf team. Billy Arthur is a physical education teacher at Blue Ridge High School and the owner of Golf 365 on Route 6 in Eynon. Selena Cerra is a senior attending and playing golf for Niagra University and 4 time Women’s Champion at Elkview Country Club. Alexandra Fitzsimmons will be a senior this year at Scranton Prep and plays on their golf team. Noah Newcomb will be a freshman at Carbondale High School this year and is likely a starter on their golf team. The program is managed by Joan Brownell. Joan organizes the six sessions, three at Lakeland Golf Club on Thursdays and the three at Fern Hall Inn on Fridays. Joan makes sure that each girl and boy has clubs if they don’t have their own and the golf professionals make sure that each student has the best fit possible. In addition to all of the many things she does Joan is also organizing a comedy night to raise funds for the junior golf program. The comedy night is Saturday, August 13 and tickets are still available. If you would like to have a fun night out and help the junior golf program please contact Joan at 570-282-5007. The program is also funded through sponsor donations. Sponsors are always welcome and always needed. The goal is to make the program affordable to everyone interested. Joan also created a website at nepajuniorgolf.weebly.com and there is also a Facebook page at nepajrgolf. From everyone associated with the program we would like to thank the students, parents and sponsors for their support. We are often told that the students enjoy the program. We are sometimes told that the students are beating their parents. We enjoy hearing both. One week remains for this year. We look forward to seeing everyone again next year.
