Beachcomber
Ultra Trail Raidlight Beachcomber (UTRB) is
a truly unique trail running event, set in the
tropical paradise island of Mauritius. The third
edition, scheduled for the 9th and 10th of July,
2016, will be even more exciting after two very
successful ones in 2014 and 2015.
The UTRB will once again challenge and delight
runners and nature lovers on all three of the
event’s races. Participants can attempt the only
“ultra trail” race in Mauritius – a tough challenge
on mountains, in forests and along beaches,
totalling a distance of over 120km. They can
also test themselves on a medium-distance
47km course in hilly and stunning landscapes,
or run a shorter but spectacular 10km track.
Crafted by Beachcomber and the trail
equipment manufacturer Raidlight,
a key event of the Mauritian trail
calendar. It will again showcase its

5-star label that contributes to its international
reputation. Hospitality, specifications of courses,
management, supplies at aid stations and race
assistance all benefit from the service and from
the attention to detail that contribute to the
highest quality of Beachcomber hotels. Being
served at aid stations by a chef wearing his hat
is not a dream on the UTRB. It is for real...
Designed by Benoit Laval, one of the leading
French trail running specialists and supervised all
through by a highly qualified team, the courses
of the UTRB take participants through a fantastic
discovery of the most beautiful regions of the
island in various terrains – mountains, forests,
savannah, fields, cliffs and beaches.
Are you ready for the challenge and for a great
opportunity to escape and explore? On your

Qualifying race for!
The Seven colours trail is the only one so far to be classified as an “ultra trail” in Mauritius. With a total
distance of 120km and 9,000m of combined elevation, up and down the highest and wildest peaks
of the island, it is a daunting challenge for runners. The name of the race refers to a fascinating and
unique natural site: earth dunes having seven variations of ocher, red or purple, located in the hilly
region of Chamarel, not far from part of the event’s track.
This trail race is an invitation to overcome one’s limits while discovering the most spectacular natural
regions of the island of Mauritius and enjoying food and drink supplies of standards rarely seen on a
trail running competition. After the start at night in front of the beautiful mansion of St Aubin, in the
South-eastern part of Mauritius, the runners go across fields and forests, uphill and downhill. They
then climb up the Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire – the island’s highest peak – before going down
through forests, around a lake, in savannah-like terrain in the West and then uphill again at Brisefer.
After another downhill course in the famous Camphriers track, the competitors cross some rivers and
go up the challenging Gollum track, which is the last major climb. The route next goes through forests,
sugar cane fields and pastures, then along cliffs and on pristine beaches. At the end of it all, a typical
Mauritian atmosphere will welcome the courageous runners on the beach of Shandrani Hotel.
Christophe Le Saux, (winner men):
Uxue Fraile, (winner ladies):
“The course of UTRB is magnificent! Thanks to
this ultra trail we really discovered Mauritius
in 2015 and we now know that there are
not only beautiful beaches and turquoise
blue lagoons there. The natural landscape
is stunning and the terrain is highly varied.
The UTRB organisers have set up a very
nice event to attract competitors as well as
visitors who are fond of green tourism. See
you in 2016 maybe!”
“I did not know Mauritius and this first visit to
the island and the participation to UTRB2015
were a very good experience. The course is
stunning and offers many different grounds.
In spite of some flat portions, it was also a
difficult course because there were so many
testing paths in the mountains. The UTRB is
a very beautiful race. Hopefully, I will return
next year”.
“A magnificent course!”

Time limit : 12 hours
The Trail de la Perruche, with its 47km course,
connects the mountainous region of the
island’s central area to the wildest beaches
in the South. It is an attractive challenge
for those who love to run intermediate
distances in breathtaking scenery.
Claire Nedelec, (winner ladies):
The start is adjacent to the sacred lake
of Grand Bassin. The race’s tracks then
wind through the tea fields of Bois Chéri,
mountains and forests in the southeastern
region of the island. On getting out of
the lush hills, runners go through sugar
cane fields and then atop cliffs and along
beautiful beaches before crossing the finish
line at Shandrani hotel.
“An extraordinary experience and
a grandiose finish”
“ It is the first time that I participate in a trail
in Mauritius and the experience has been
extraordinary, with a magnificent route and a
grandiose finish at Shandrani Hotel. Slopes are
not as strong as in my country La Reunion but
the route offers magnificent points of view. “
Frédéric Duchemann, (winner men):
“A wonderful trail and a great
atmosphere”
“It is my first trail over that distance, because
I had only run 30km formats in this type of
competition. I am definitely very satisfied with
the result and with the great experience I got
on the UTRB. We had a magnificent route,
with terrain of all sorts, and a very beautiful
atmosphere during the race and on the finish
line at Shandrani”.

TRAIL SOUFFLEUR
DU
This 10km-route is almost flat and offers
numerous opportunities for discovery and
delight: from the start at Le Souffleur, the race’s
paths follow the outlines of the coast, along
white sandy beaches and blue lagoons, or near
cliffs beaten by the waves from the open sea. At
the end of a quiet stroll or of a breathless race,
all participants can enjoy a champion’s welcome
on the finish line at the Shandrani Resort & Spa.

BREATHLESS IN PARADISE
UTRB 2016, starting on July 9th, will again make participants breathless by the sheer beauty of its landscapes – notwithstanding
the daunting efforts it sometimes demands. The pictures on this page, shot during the three races of the 2015 edition, give a
hint of the sporting challenge and the emotions that await runners and their support teams.
