Chaverim Yekarim (cherished friends) –
Shalom!
However, when all is said and done and we look back with
hindsight - which is always 20/20 - we realize that God’s
Providence was at work. Once we have moved through the
darkness and can thoughtfully consider what has transpired,
we realize that we were never truly alone. Though not
necessarily apparent or visible, the Holy One of Blessing was
with us in the crucible of the experience.
Just a few days ago, we participated in
the most joyous of Jewish Festivals –
Purim. For many of us, especially those
of us with children, we look forward
to this holiday because it enables us
to reinforce the notion that Judaism has a “lighter side”;
it is a religious tradition replete with opportunities for
merrymaking, frivolity and a significant measure of
silliness. In this way, Judaism’s attractiveness and appeal
are appreciably enhanced and made readily available for a
broader constituency. “Selling” active participation in the
fun of Purim to our children is (at least at certain stages
in their development) far easier than asking them to, for
example, contemplate the complexities of the transgressionatonement- forgiveness cycle, which swirls about us during
the High Holy Day Season.
2) The “Hidden” and the “Revealed” Continuum: The
heroine of the Purim story is, of course, Queen Esther.
Our Rabbis teach us that the name Esther was actually a
pseudonym given to Mordechai’s niece whose true name
was Hadassah. She is given this name – Esther - because of
her crucial role and function within the Purim narrative.
Esther is derived from the Hebrew word “Nistar”, which
means “hidden” or “undetected”. It is Esther who - through
her behind the scenes efforts - allows for God’s master plan
to evolve and come to fruition. Without her, there would
have been no salvation and no elevation of Mordechai and
the Jewish People. Esther - the hidden one - clandestinely
serves as the agent of God and secures the well-being of our
Nation.
Of course, relegating Purim to an exclusively pediatric
celebration intended only for merriment and gaiety (of any
age cohort) is to miss a significant opportunity presented
by this unique celebration. In fact, when we dig beneath the
surface and consider carefully the potential profundity of
Purim, we quickly realize the genius of those who instituted
this celebration.
However, Purim is not only about salvation that arrives
from a “hidden” place. After the miraculous and Goddirected events, the Jewish people are instructed to read the
Scroll of Esther in “every location, in every language and in
every era”. What was once a tale engulfed in mystery, now
becomes the Megillah - a Hebrew word closely related to
the word “Galuy”, which means “apparent and visible to all”.
Purim becomes a time to reveal to all – to trumpet loudly
and clearly - that God remains active, engaged, and involved
in our lives.
Allow me to illustrate my point with two interrelated and
relatively straightforward examples.
1) God’s name does not appear in the Scroll of Esther:
Whenever I teach the Megillah, people are utterly surprised
and often taken aback by the notion that God is “absent”
from the tale. Why - they ask - should we share a story
that obfuscates God’s presence in human history? Can’t
we find or even invent a tale that underscores God’s active
participation in our destiny and thus promotes faith in the
Almighty? What utility is there in reading a lengthy story - as
fascinating as it might be - that lacks the ability to motivate
us religiously?
Inspired by Purim, I bless us all with the ability to enjoy both
the playful and transcendent aspects of Judaism. And in so
doing, inspire our children - and our children’s children to participate in perpetuity in the sacred celebrations made
available to us by our unique and powerful heritage.
With love,
Of course, our wise Sages were well aware of this challenge.
In fact, they use God’s absence from the text of the Scroll of
Esther as an opportunity to teach what they believed to be a
most significant lesson about life. Often, God seems absent
from the places we would most expect/hope to encounter
the Divine. We become frustrated or despondent and begin
to give up on the notion that God cares and will intercede.

A Special Passover Message from Rabbi Rose
Shalom BA Chaverim!
As most of you undoubtedly know, each year I endeavor to run two special Tzedakah Campaigns. The first helps raise funds
for the needy around the holiday of Chanukah, while the second takes place at this time of the year, right before Pesach. In
my experience, these are the two times of the year when our Shul receives the greatest number of requests for assistance.
Generally speaking, the donations that I make on our behalf, are kept confidential - to protect the anonymity of both the
donors and the recipients. This, of course, is an elevated form of Tzedakah according to our Tradition. However, the letter
below is so profound and heartwarming, that I felt it necessary to share it with our Congregational Family. Please note that
I have the full permission of the recipients to share this information with you. I hope that its contents will not only touch
your hearts as it did mine, but it will also inspire us all to continue giving generously so that we can help support our Jewish
brothers and sisters the world over. As always, Todah Rabbah! May you each be blessed from On-High for your efforts!
With profound gratitude,
Carnie
Dear Rabbi Carnie Rose & our B'nai Amoona Friends:
learn Hebrew, but have always felt hindered by our lack
of understanding of the language and other important
components of Jewish law.
Shalom! My name is MUGOYA SHADRACH LEVI and I
am a Ugandan Jew from a Jewish Community called
Namutumba. I am the father of two children and I lead
services as a Hazzan/Cantor at Namutumba Synagogue
- something I started 10 years ago. On behalf of Our
Synagogue, I wish to thank you so much for all your
wonderful efforts in securing and sending us the gift of
Talitot, which you recently sent. Last Shabbat, we said
a special prayer for all those who – like you - help our
Community.
We do also want to thank your lovely assistant, Amy, so
much. She helped immensely in the complicated process
of shipping of these precious gifts. Please, let her know
that her help is greatly appreciated.
Our Synagogue is located in the rural part of Uganda
where electricity and running water is a problem. The cost
for the solar panel, which we can put on the Synagogue
roof to help us on Friday nights with Kabbalat Shabbat,
costs $2,000 – money that we do not have. Our Synagogue
Committee is also working on a project proposal for fresh
water to be installed in our Community. Can I send you a
copy of our proposal as soon as I finish it so that you can
share it with your members? Maybe some of them will
want to help us with these efforts as well?
A little bit about our Synagogue…Abayudaya is a Luganda
word for “People of Judah” or the Jewish People. Also,
Abayudaya has three (3) words within it: Abba means
father, Yudah means Judah, and Yah means G-d. Therefore,
Abayudaya literally means “The Father of Judah is G-d”.
Our community now follows the path of the Conservative
Movement. A group of the Conservative Rabbis from the
USA and Israel recently flew into Uganda and converted
me and the members of my community. It was a very
special occasion for us all!
With your help, we can diminish these deficits and
bring these long–term pursuits to fruition. We hope for
knowledge, learning, skills, wonderful memories and many
new friends who will help our Synagogue thrive.
Namutumba Synagogue has a population of 350 members,
which includes men, women and children. For that
number, we had only 4 Talitot, which made the service
impossible because they did not cover even a Minyan. With
your help, at least, the entire Minyan is now covered. The
350 population is scattered in the village of Namutumba.
Namutumba is located in the Eastern part of Uganda - 4
hours drive from Kampala, our capital city.
We also invite our generous supporters and all their friends
and family to visit our humble houses in NamutumbaUganda. Even if we lack light and electricity, running
water, hospitals, and schools, we continue our struggle. We
wholeheartedly believe that a more meaningful life comes
from the Jewish struggle to live by the standards set by our
predecessors, ancestors and leaders.
Again, many thanks for your help so far. We look forward to
hearing back from you very soon.
The goal of our Synagogue has been to help us become
better Jews; so our deeds and behaviors can match our
love and enthusiasm for Judaism.
Yours faithfully,
Mugoya Shadrach Levi - NAMUTUMBA SYNAGOGUE
To this end, we decided to improve our education in both
secular and Jewish studies. We have tried on our own to

From Rabbi Ari Kaiman
All of our holidays have wisdom and relevance. Purim’s wisdom and relevance is perhaps least understood.
It is the holiday that we dress in masks, and act a bit crazy. We read from the Megillah and we BOO to drown
out Haman’s name. But the central mitzvah of the holiday is not the silliness or the booing, though those are
fun and important to continue to do.
Besides the reading of the Megillah, the Mitzvot of the holiday are Mishloach Manot and Matanot L’Evyonim,
we are supposed to send food to our friends and family, and we are supposed to give gifts to the poor.
We are supposed to care for the members of our community regardless of their economic status and we are
supposed to care for the poor regardless of their membership in our community.
Maimonides in the Laws of Gifts to the Poor codifies the kinds of ways communities used to do this.
Halacha 1
In every city where Jews live, they are obligated to appoint faithful men of renown as trustees of a charitable fund. They should
circulate among the people from Friday to Friday and take from each person what is appropriate for him to give and the assessment
made upon him. They then allocate the money from Friday to Friday, giving each poor person sufficient food for seven days. This
is called the kupah.
From time to time someone walks into our building needing a little help to make it through the month. I’m proud that our
community has stepped forward and made it possible to not send anyone away empty-handed. In a small way, this is like a Kupah
that helps those who are poor. But a fund or gift cards only goes part of the way.
Halacha 2
Similarly, we appoint trustees who take bread, different types of food, fruit, or money from every courtyard from those who make
a spontaneous donation and divide what was collected among the poor in the evening, giving each poor person sustenance for
that day. This is called the tamchui
Sometimes members of our community find ourselves in difficult times of transition. Just getting a meal on the table becomes
too much to handle. It is not as if they suddenly cannot afford a meal or to order a pizza, but their options for good food becomes
limited. We have at times, offered “Meal-Trains” for B’nai Amoona families going through difficult or challenging times. I haven’t
counted, but I imagine that more than two hundred meals have been provided to new parents, grieving families, and other times
of transition. In some ways this is closer to a tamchui, and closer to the Mitzvah of Mishloach Manot. We are sending meals to
members of our community, even if they could find other ways to get food as well.
Our Shomrei Amoonim committee is always looking for new ways to connect our supportive community with those who need
support. We are “cooking” an idea that we would love your input on.
We’re dreaming about getting a freezer that will always be stocked with good, ready to go food. Perhaps your chavurah could come
to our kitchen and cook a huge vat of chicken soup to be split into individual family meals. Or maybe you’ve got the best lasagna
recipe – it could go in the freezer too. It would be so much easier for us as Klei Kodesh and our Shomrei Amoonim committee
to provide just a little help and love to get through some of the tough times. It would be a great Mitzvah.
If you have thoughts about this idea, or any other ideas of your own I would love to hear from you!

Cantorial Notes
I am thrilled to share that our own Hazzan Emeritus, Hazzan Leon Lissek, is receiving the David Putterman
Lifetime Achievement Award from the Cantors Assembly. It will be presented to him on May 4, 2015 in
a special ceremony during the Cantors Assembly convention. I am incredibly proud of my dear teacher,
colleague, and friend, and I know you join me in celebrating this acknowledgement of Hazzan Lissek’s
beautiful and impactful contributions throughout his esteemed career here at B’nai Amoona and beyond.
This award holds particular meaning for him as David Putterman was one of his teachers and a great
source of inspiration. Hazzan Lissek credits Hazzan Putterman, Hazzan of the Park Avenue Synagogue
(where, interestingly, Hazzan Lissek’s daughter, Shira, is now the Assistant Hazzan) from 1933 to 1976, with inspiring him
to commission many musical works, including the Kedushah Symphony, which enhanced our community and our prayer
experience at B’nai Amoona. While Hazzan Lissek’s work can stand on its own, I do believe that the Cantors Assembly offers
this award to him with an understanding of his beautiful Neshamah, his open heart, his deep commitment to Jewish life
and his great care for the indivduals who are lucky enough to come into contact with him. I know that many of us feel most
fortunate to know him and to learn from not just his technical knowledge but from those intangibles, as well.
If you would like to contribute to the Hazzan Leon and Michal Lissek Music Endowment Fund at Congregation B’nai Amoona
in honor of this Lifetime Achievement Award we will be very happy to notify Hazzan Lissek of your generous donation.
Barbara Shechter is available by phone at 314-576-9990 x126 or by e-mail at [email protected] to assist you.
The Cantors Assembly also offers the opportunity for us to celebrate with Hazzan Lissek this most exciting and well deserved
honor by sending a tribute. The ad tributes are always a centerpiece of our Cantors Assembly convention and this year they
will be presented electronically throughout the conference events, beginning with the registration table. I am including this
information as I am sure many people will be asking me about the specifics. Thank you so much for your support of Hazzan
Lissek, B’nai Amoona and of the Cantors Assembly. The CA was my path to the Cantorate and has been, along with our own
Shul, a source of great support, inspiration, and continued learning for both our Hazzan Emeritus and myself.
Mazal Tov, Hazzan Lissek!

From the President
It's time, once again, for our Annual meeting. Please join us on Monday evening, March 23 at 7:00 when:
• I will summarize what has been going on over the last year as well as look to what lies ahead.
• Rabbi Rose will speak about the theme for next year which is certainly intriguing and will involve a year
long process of gathering information from you, our members, and
• we will vote on the slate of Officers and Board members.
After the congregational meeting, we will have a reception and everyone is invited to join us for our Board Meeting which
immediately follows.
Our board, executive committee and our various other committees have been hard at work! We would love to see many of
you attend - perhaps there is something you can offer your expertise to in the coming year.
Looking forward to seeing you,

Todah Rabbah to all of the Shomrei Amoonim volunteers who braved the snow and cold to package and deliver Purim
Mishalach Manot to 60 Congregation members who live in facilities, are home bound, or just need a little extra TLC! The
best part was that they brought sunshine, smile and laughter on the visits.
Special thanks to Kari Kramer for designing the fun and colorful bags. Thank you to Wendy Shanker and Kari Kramer for
braving a snowy night to pack the bags. Expert design assistance was provided by Sarah Felman.
A huge shout out to B'nai Amoona USY for baking the Hamentaschen with love. Thank you to the ECC for decorating the
cards.
Thank you to all of the volunteers who delivered the bags... Hilary Benjamin, Celia Ciemnoczolowski, Beverly Chervitz,
Maria Cohen, Mark Dana, Jim Ellis, Bev Fogelman, Rebecca, Ilan and Seraphina Gabris, Linda Gavatin, Galit Lev Harir,

Comments from the volunteers and the recipients were very positive. In most cases we were able to visit, and bring a little
bit of B'nai Amoona warmth to those who can't get there as often as they once could.
To find out more about how you can volunteer to help provide TLC to congregants, or if you need a little extra TLC, please

assistance during an emergency. Anyone who is a St. Louis County resident who has a cognitive, age-related, or physical
condition that may interfere with their ability to respond safely during a disaster is eligible to enroll. Enrollment is voluntary
and free of charge. Information is strictly confidential and is entered into a secured database.

Maot Chittim/Mechirat Chametz
2015/5775
Dear Friends,
The Festival of Pesach provides us with an opportunity to perform TWO special Mitzvot. Please take a moment to
complete the two forms below and return them to my attention at your earliest convenience. Your contributions will be
distributed through the Rabbi’s Discretionary Fund to local causes as well as international programs. May this Pesach
truly be a time of freedom and prosperity for all!
Todah Rabbah,
Rabbi Carnie Shalom Rose
Maot Chittim (Gifts for those in Need)
At this time of year, we remember those who are less fortunate, especially as we prepare to sit down to lavish meals as
part of our Pesach Seder experiences. It is customary, therefore, to contribute funds to those in need. At the Seder we say
“Let all who are hungry come in and eat with us.” This invitation can be fulfilled, in part, by donating to Maot Chittim
(literally: coins for wheat).
Rabbi Rose: Please accept this contribution to the B’nai Amoona Maot Chittim Fund which assists needy Jews in
observing the Pesach holiday here and abroad. Enclosed is my (our) contribution of $________ to the Rabbi
Rose Discretionary Fund to be distributed on my (our) behalf to individuals & organizations which are helping
all Jews observe Pesach with dignity and joy.

Mechirat Chametz (Selling of Chametz)
The sale of Chametz is conducted between a representative of the Shul, the Rabbi, and a non-Jew. After Pesach, the
Chametz is repurchased by the Rabbi. If you would like Rabbi Rose to sell your Chametz, please fill out the form below
and either mail it to the Shul or, in the more traditional manner, come by the Shul to briefly meet with Rabbi Rose and
personally effect the Kinyan “transfer” or “sale”. Please be sure to sell your Chametz no later than Friday, April 3

Why do we volunteer at
Delmar Gardens West?
It’s a Mitzvah!
Joel Dennis, Harvey Greenstein, Laurie Cohen, and Mark Dana make a
difference in the lives of Delmar Gardens West residents.
That’s a Mitzvah!
They volunteer once a month on Friday afternoons by participating in
the Shabbat service. It starts at 4:00 pm and lasts 45 minutes.
The service warms the hearts of our aging friends and family members
and helps them connect with their Judaism.
You can help by volunteering to lead or assist the Shabbat service, too.
Send an email to Laurie Cohen at [email protected] and Mark
Dana at [email protected] and get involved.

BA Sisterhood
Sisterhood has had a tremendous year so far, and we have YOU to thank for it. Your support and involvement in our
events and programs is what makes Sisterhood successful. Our Sisterhood Shabbat/Torah Fund weekend and A Prairie Shul
Companion Mitzvah event required the help of many, and are evidence of the great things we can accomplish together!
While the major events of the year are past, Sisterhood has some upcoming efforts to provide service to the community. We
are participants in the upcoming Women’s Interfaith Conference on April 23, 2015. We will once again join with Traditional
Congregation to collect items and assemble Mother's Day bags for women in shelters. We contribute to Masorti, and Camp
Ramah, as well as the Jewish Food Pantry among others.
We are very proud of the support we send out beyond the walls of B’nai Amoona, but our primary work is within these
walls. Our Wednesday Adult Education continues to meet, under the able tutelage of Rabbi Rose and occasional guests. This
highly popular programis coordinated by our Vice Presidents of Education, Elizabeth Wright and Rachel Taxman. Our Vice
Presidents of Programming, Diane Friedman and Heidi Friedman have planned several fun programs this year and the final
program of the year will be a special treat. Stay tuned for more information!
All of our Officers have done a wonderful job this year, and I have learned so much from being part of this fantastic team.
Very soon we will be voting on our new slate of officers and Board members for 2015-2016. B’nai Amoona Sisterhood
continues to do great things. If you would like more information on any of the events or programs, or about membership in
B’nai Amoona Sisterhood, please contact me.

Early Childhood Happenings
P
esach comes rushing to greet us soon, so get
ready. Seders are fun and great learning for all
ages. Preschoolers love the many things to taste and
stories to hear, songs to sing and charosis to chop.
Involve your preschooler in Seder preparations by
providing meaningful jobs to do. There is so much
to do that you can even use small hands to carry
Passover groceries up from where you stored them
in the basement, mix salt into water, put napkins
and Haggadas on the table, roll matzah balls, put
matzah on the plate for the table and lots more. They
want to help, so trust them to pitch in with real jobs.
Together make puppets of the key players in the
story of the Exodus, so at appropriate times during
the Seder various puppets can make an appearance
or use dolls and stuffed animals to represent Moses,
Pharoah, and Miriam. Remember that there is no one
better than a preschooler to reenact the Maggid/
Story during the Seder . Chag Sameach Pesach!
Our BA ECC Families are what make the B’nai Amoona ECC
a wonderful community! Research proves the strongest
school communities have interested and involved parents.
We have parents who volunteer during Lunch Bunch, share
their special marketing skills, share their photography skills,
make a special snack for our staff, share a special recipe with
a class, help celebrate a birthday or read a special book.
B’nai Amoona ECC is proud of our students, professional
staff, and parents that make up our community. Tell your
friends about our community!
S
ummer is coming and Camp B’nai Ami, is the most
fun for up to 8 weeks of the summer! Children
ages 6 weeks through entering pre-kindergarten
can choose from weekly enrollment, so you can
go on vacation and return to camp at no added
cost. Swim lessons are a favorite part of camp for
the pre-K children; three times a week they go with
Camp Ramot Amoona to the Elks Club on Ladue
Rd. for lessons overseen by the YMCA. This swim
program is a one-to-one ratio of child to attendant.
Our fabulous Camp Counselors, make this possible.
Our camp days are filled with singing, dancing,
running, creating and experiencing. To learn more
and enroll go to www.bnaiamoona.com
F
all enrollment for the B’nai Amoona Early Childhood
Center is already well under way, so come by for a visit
or find registration information on line at bnaiamoona.
com. Our Katantan infant room is a warm, gentle place
where children experience their first socialization outside
of the family setting. We make this room a comforting
place for parents and babies. Our ECC is open all year
with “rolling admission” so new friends ages 1 – 6 years
old can join us at any time. Playing to learn and learning
to play together in a Jewish environment are what you
will find when you join this school community.
If you know anyone with a young child who is not
already at our school, be sure to tell them all about our
ECC or even give me the information and I will call them.
I am happy to give tours and meet with families. There
is no better place for a child to begin his/her Jewish

Creating a Child-Friendly
Passover Seder
1. Feed your children dinner before the Seder.
The most important part of the Seder is the experience not necessarily the dinner. If you feed your children
a substantial snack or even a meal before your Seder they will not be so food focused.
2. Plays, Skits and Acting
Retell the story of the exodus from Egypt by staging a play. Children and adults love skits. Remember to
use lots of props. Or ask different guests to take on the persona of the characters in the story and interview,
for example, “Moses, how did you feel when you went to speak to Pharaoh?”
3. Buy new clothes.
Passover is the beginning of the New Year and spring. It is traditional to buy new clothes to wear at the
Seder. If you child loves dressing up and wearing something new, now is the perfect time.
4. Serve H’ors D’oeuvres
During Karpas, the dipping of the green vegetable, instead of simply serving parsley or celery dipped in salt
water, serve a whole series of vegetable H’ors D’oeuves complete with dipping sauces.
5. Prepare Discussions
If you have older children, prepare a discussion around the issues of the Seder. Have them share what
they have learned in school, either about Passover or ancient Egypt. Connect the discussion to modern
issues you are concerned about such as “What are our plagues”, “Freedom in today’s society”, “Do we hear
God speaking to us in our lives” or “How do we “cleaning” out our personal and physical clutter.”
6. Passover Feeling in the Air
Prepare your children for Passover, the Seder and what will happen. About a week or two before, listen to
Passover music, read Passover books, rent a Passover movie, color Passover pictures, make a matzah
cover with your children or plan and cook special Seder foods. The more ownership children feel over the
Seder the more involved and excited they will be. (Need some help with the above suggestions; there are
tons of ideas on the internet.)
7. Passover Plagues
All children love to hear about the 10 plagues. Make it even more exciting this year by creating a plague kit
complete with jumping plastic frogs, Styrofoam balls to thrown for hail or sunglass for darkness. See how
creative and interactive your plagues can be! (I have even done this with adult only seders)
8. Games
Play a game of Jeopardy, Passover Trivia, Charades, Name who said/did what, or Seder Bingo. Have your
children help prepare these games in advance.
9. Invite Guests from the Exodus Story to join your Seder
Do you have a teenager or adult at your Seder who loves to act? Invite them to dress up and play the part
of Moses, Pharaoh, Miriam or the Israelites.
10. Involved and Questioning
The whole point of the evening is to get children to question what is happening. Whatever you can do to
illicit questions is good. Decorate your living room like a tent and ask everyone to join you in the desert after
you have escaped Egypt. Pack a suitcase and reenact leaving Egypt or set the entire table backwards – do
anything that will excite and interest your children and get them involved and questioning.

Minyan Matters
Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Laura Shapiro and I am the new BA Minyanaire chair. First,
thank you Sari Neudorf for your many years of service and for guiding me on the right path. Yours will
be hard shoes to fill!
Minyan is for everyone. Each morning and night is a small community gathering; a time to share joy and
sorrow as well as pray together. Each Minyan has its own “culture”. With that in mind, recently we have
been experiencing some difficulty gathering Minyanim on specific days. Some of our regulars of the last
20 years are no longer able to attend due to medical issues and the harsh weather conditions. We really
need you to help out. Please “try out” several Minyanim to see which one is best for you and your family.
Since Spring is almost in the air - well not really as the snow continues to fall - it is again time for our annual Minyanaire
Shabbat. Please make a point of joining us as we honor all of our Minyanaires. Also, on that day we will find out who the
Minyanaire of the Year is for 2015/5775; clearly the most anticipated and coveted award of the year! This year Minyanaire
Shabbat will be on the last day of Pesach, Saturday April 11, 2015.
For all of you that are currently Minyanaires, thank you all for your dedication to the Minyan. It is because of all of you that
we have a daily Minyan - twice a day - for our community and for the mourners.
For those of you I do not know yet, please introduce yourself to me. Please contact me and let me know which Minyan you
can regularly attend. I will add you to the list. I look forward to seeing everyone at Shul!
B’ Shalom,
Laura

Men's Club
Jumping right into it… Here are the highlights for March and April:
Everyone who attended (or watched on Shulcast) will tell you that Men’s Club Shabbat (March 14)
wasn’t any lightweight service. Thanks to a cadre of talented readers, we brought a double-portion
of Torah, special Maftir and Haftarah (for Shabbat Parah), and blessings for the arrival of Nisan.
Heck, we even squeezed in a 25th Wedding Anniversary. Another switch we made was quite cool to
me. In lieu of the usual “speeches”, before and after the Torah or Haftarah readings, each of the seven
individual readings was followed with a short observation about a contrast within that part, and the
congregation raised their right-or-left hands to indicate which element was more significant to them personally. Thought
provoking stuff from the minds of Jay Englander and Creighton Cohn, and really well delivered by Neil Peters! I am still
processing the reality of having lead Musaf for the first time in my life. The moment of greatest clarity was this tremendous
boost in the first section of the Amidah, when I really heard the congregation behind me and we were all just praying together.
The Man & Youth of the Year Luncheon on Sunday (March 15) was also a lovely afternoon of recognizing two wonderful men
(Bruce Frank and Jerry Raskin), plus two youths (Jonathan Samuels and Alex Zvibleman) from both B’nai Amoona and Kol
Rinah. Amazing to see so many come out and participate by their presence, showing our community’s best that we appreciate
the way that they lead and inspire by word and deed. The entire weekend was the result of so much effort and dedication from
everyone on the Men’s Club Board and Officers. It is genuinely one of those things where I am afraid to try listing everything
that everyone did, because it’s SO much and I would feel awful about forgetting/missing something. Hope it is enough to say
that you should just congratulate every member you know because we should all be proud!
Next, I’d like to thank Sisterhood for asking us to provide refreshments at their fabulous Mitzvah event last month. It was an
amazing show and many guests were generous with tips to benefit the Ted Fischer Camp Scholarship Fund. Win-win indeed.
Now let’s see what we can really do to raise some money! Men’s Club truly does fundraise all year long for camp scholarships.
Springtime is our crucial annual push, though. We rely on the congregation to find it in their hearts to each give what they
can to help us make a Jewish Camp experience a little more affordable for dozens and dozens of kids. I have said it before:
Every dollar contributed to the endowment goes directly to funding scholarships, mostly at our own Camps Ramot Amoona
and B’nai Ami. Watch your mailbox!
Men’s Club we will also be continuing our tradition of distributing FJMC Yellow Candles to students at the Meyer Kranzberg
Learning Center, so their families can observe Yom Hashoah on Wednesday night, April 15th. These can also be found at Shul
in the weeks leading up to the holiday, so look for them and help yourselves.
Wishing us all a joyous Pesach,
Ed
