He’s always been a music pioneer, pushing the boundaries of anything from genres to social norms. He chatted to Dylan Jones about his new album, his musical theatre project and more. Hello Andy! So first I’d like you to tell me about your new album, “ Torsten, The Beautiful Libertine.” Who’s Torsten? Is it an alter-ego? I wouldn’t say it’s really an altar-ego. He’s a character created by Barney Ashton, the writer. Barney used to live in Norway a long time ago, and speaks Norwegian. So he had this idea for this Scandinavian-type figure. Barney’s about eight years younger than me, but our experiences on the gay scene seem to resonate with each other. We’re both quite shy and stuff. So a lot of the character is based on that angst of living on the gay scene and stuff. Torsten is polysexual anyway so he’s not necessarily gay. He’s all kinds of people. I just watched the video for your new single My Precious One. I love it, where did you film it?! Oh that’s out towards Stoneley. A little way out of London. They restore old phoneboxes for people in LA. They collect them and sell them off, and just keep them there! So we thought it’d be a great place to shoot a video. What modern artists do you respect at the moment? If any. I don’t know really! I haven’t heard a lot of modern stuff to be honest. I’m sort of stuck in the retro groove. I really like Hercules & Love Affair. I love Andy Butler’s voice. And Anthony Hegarty, he’s amazing. And I love that he’s like an anti-star. I like the less commercialised, in your face, all singing all dancing. I like the more subdued ones really. Tell me about your musical at Above The Stag It’s a dark comedy musical! It’s really good and it’s been really fun preparing for it. It’s so complicated though, I didn’t realise how much work it was gonna be! It’s a bit of a mindfuck, because I knew the songs already. So you have to kind of unlearn the songs, 2 qxmagazine.com QX_1095_Andy Bell.indd 2 01/03/2016 17:55 then sing them in a different way. Sort of drop out verses and rearrange the songs. Sometimes there’s prose in the middle of the songs too. And then you have to move around and remember where to walk on top of that. I don’t think both sides of my brain necessarily work that well at the same time! It’s written by Barney Ashton. It’s part two of a trilogy, so there’s a third one to come. For him it’s kind of a living soap opera. He’s very experimental, so it’s quite surreal. There’s not really a storyline. It’s just about how three people met. Talking of Above The Stag, what do you think of the London gay scene? I don’t really know it to be honest! I suppose I dropped out about ten years ago. But I still go to the odd place every now and then. I’ll go to the Vauxhall Tavern. I used to go to the Black Cap when I lived in Highgate. Now I’ve moved to Limehouse, so my local is The Old Ship and The Grapes. If I’m in Soho I’ll go to Friendly Society, maybe go for a drink at the King’s Head. Just little places that I know. You’ve previously opened up about being HIV positive; what’s the reception been like from the public? It’s been pretty good! To be honest, I’m glad we [Erasure] had quite a low profile when I started telling people. I wouldn’t want to be all blazing, going down the street and everybody knowing who I was and stuff. I really like the pace that it is at the moment actually. I just do talks every now and then, or songs for charities like the Terrence Higgins Trust and the National AIDs Trust. I’m also an ambassador for the Harvey Milk School in New York. So I go and talk to the students there. We talk about all kinds of things. It’s not necessarily just about HIV. It’s the same thing as being gay though, you don’t want that to be all you’re known for. It’s just part of who you are. All you can say at the end of the day really is which pills you take and how long you’ve been taking them, and that’s that. What do you make of the role of gay men in society at the moment? Do you have any thoughts on chemsex and Grindr and stuff? Not really, no. We were born in a different time. Part of our education was fighting for our rights, knowing the history of Stonewall and everything. And there were always the clichéd female singers that gay men like. Liza Minelli, Judy Garland, all that stuff. Now younger people have their own heroines. Beyonce, Rihanna, Miley. You can’t really expect people to act differently. For them, their rights have already been won. Yes! Which is nice. It is! I love it. I love going out now. The other night I went out to a fashion show. All the young people were hanging out afterwards, and it was just so refreshing speaking to them. Because it’s not even an issue, mostly. Some people feel today’s young gay generation take it all for granted a bit… No. That’s like your parents saying “oh you don’t know how hard it was when we were young” and all that stuff. People should be allowed to enjoy their lives! “Torsten is polysexual anyway so he’s not necessarily gay. He’s all kinds of people.” Andy Bell’s new album “Torsten, The Beautiful Libertine” is out on 4th March. His musical of the same name is at Above The Stag until 27th March. www.abovethestag.com 3 qxmagazine.com QX_1095_Andy Bell.indd 3 01/03/2016 18:48 T h e w h o , T H E w h a t , w h y , w h e r e & w h e n o f g a y L o n d o n … I N F O R M E R Brighton Pride 2016 This year Brighton and Hove Pride will take place on Saturday 6th August. At their clash at Old Trafford, the team captains exchanged a pair of supersized Rainbow Laces to show their support to the Stonewall campaign to promote equality for lesbian, gay, bi and trans people in sport. Both teams also signed the giant laces, with fans given the opportunity to win a signed lace by following the hashtag #RainbowLaces on Twitter. Research from Stonewall, the lesbian, gay, bi and trans equality charity, shows that homophobia, biphobia and transphobia continue to be rife in many sports. In football alone seven in 10 fans have heard homophobic abuse on the terraces. Stonewall is urging fans to challenge this behaviour where they see and hear it, and explain why discrimination has no place in sport. Arsenal Manager Arsène Wenger, OBE, said: “We are proud to be supporting the Rainbow Laces campaign again this year, because discrimination has no part to play in our game at all. Football is about people coming together for a common purpose, to share emotions and experiences. It should not be important who you are or where you are from.” A new study has shown that a lot more straight men than you might have guessed are using dildos, butt plugs and other sex toys and objects while masturbating! New Mexico based Psychologist Allison Kirshbaum surveyed hundreds of men on their past masturbatory habits and, according to Mel Magazine, she found that 24% of all men – both straight and gay – had inserted an object during their self-love session, with 35.3% engaging in nipple play. 66.4% had rubbed their genitals on a surface, while 47.7% had used a shower jet. Certified sexological bodyworker, Kian De La Cour, said he was not surprised by the study’s findings. “It’s very common. A lot of men have heard about it, so it’s safer to engage in self anal-play than to engage in it with another person,” he told Gay Star News. “If I’m giving it to myself, it doesn’t have the cultural stigma attached to that area. People like to believe they have a unified sexuality but, in reality, we’re complex and our sexuality is on many levels. We shouldn’t be afraid to enjoy what we enjoy. If we can talk about sexuality and not attach stigma to certain areas, it would be better. This study will hopefully encourage other people to try it and access more pleasure through exploring themselves.” Benni Valsson for Sport & Style FEATURES EDITOR CHRIS GODFREY [email protected] DIRECTOR SALES AND MARKETING CHRIS COLMAN 020 7240 0055 [email protected] NEW BUSINESS SALES EXECUTIVE STEVE GREGORY 020 7240 0055 [email protected] SENIOR DESIGNER JANNE ÖIJER [email protected] DESIGNER SUREN GUNPATH [email protected] CLASSIFIEDS /ESCORTS 020 7240 0055 classifi[email protected] DISTRIBUTION / M.R.DISTRIBUTION PRINTERS / ACORN PUBLISHED BY FIRSTSTAR LTD. 2nd FLOOR, 28 DENMARK ST, LONDON WC2H 8NJ COVER: ANDY BELL @ WWW.ABOVETHESTAG.COM TO SUBSCRIBE TO QX CALL 020 7240 0055 £45 FOR 6 MONTHS £80 FOR 12 MONTHS WITHIN UK ONLY © Copyright in the UK and worldwide, of the publishers Firststar Limited, Q x (ISSN 1356-6903). Many moons ago, I was lucky enough to be born a foreign lesbian, with a spoon full of bin juice fed to me intravenously by my car crash of a mother. This might have affected me. I have always been averse to cocks of all shapes and sizes, so imagine my surprise when I realised that I would be pursuing a career in which I had to deal with absolute cocks every weekend. In today’s gay society, the modern door whore goes through a mixture of dismay, boredom, suicidal and homicidal thoughts, as well as an array of ugly faces, entitled fuckers and hideous outfit choices on a daily basis. It makes us bitter, bitter, BITTER, and we like it. The following are some examples of my favourite clientele. CASE STUDY 1: Daddy’s Kensington Princess Her name is usually Imogen. She had never worked a day in her life until she finished uni, then went straight into working for PR. Usually wears ASOS, or any other high street type of shops. She is usually between ages 23-29. She’s got long hair that she hasn’t cut since she was 12. Why bother when you’ve found your style? She swears by Michael Kors, she does. Usually she comes with four to six identical-looking girls who have heard that the gays love this place, and it’s a blast. Apparently. She is usually polite in a dismissive kind of way until she hears the dreaded no. She has never EVER in her life heard that no; daddy never said no to her. Cue feet stomping. Daddy/uncle/brother/next door neighbour is always a lawyer and he is gonna ruin you. Do you hear me? RUIN you if she is not let in immediately. More times than not she will get her iPhone out and start taking the photos for the future lawsuit. I suggest pose like it’s Vogue’s ‘16-‘17 spring/ summer collection. It’s fun. CASE STUDY 2: Hen Party Time I blame gay men for this phenomenon. The girl in question is clever, she doesn’t attempt full assault on the first go. Oh no. She comes at first in her Scouse brow and her maxi flowery frock, with red raw shoulder blades, (frostbite hits you when you are not wearing a coat in -1). She has genuinely spent a lot of money on this look, but somehow manages to look like Svetlana, my next door neighbour with a penchant for ten pound blow jobs. It is really an achievement. The clever part is she comes with a gay. A fabulous mincing, fake-eyebrowed, Westwood-wearing treasure. He is the ‘bait’ you see. Because of him and his fabulousness, she gets in. Next time there is couple of them, all identical, still with the ‘bait’ so they get in, again. But the third time, she is too relaxed, too cocky, so she forgets the bait and arrives just with her girlfriends. Guess what? One of them is getting married to Kevin from her primary school and they are coming in here ‘cos gays are such a laugh. I don’t fucking think so love. Tell you what, for you and your pink feather boa, it’s guestlist only. 12 qxmagazine.com QX_1095_Memoirs of a doorwhore.indd 12 01/03/2016 17:57 CASE STUDY 3: The Ragged Backwards-Through-The-Bush Fag Hag Sandra has been clubbing with her gayboys like its 1996 for 20 years now. Her usual preferred type of gay men are muscle guys or bears. She’s had a crush on one of them for the last 15 years. She has been a fixture of a gay scene since it was invented. She has tried to go dykey that one time, but alas she didn’t like the salty taste of minge and so what’s a girl to do? In this time she has managed one whole shag and maybe a pillinduced snog from a gay boy or two, back when pills Mitsubishi were on the scene and were so strong I tried seducing a seagull whilst on one in Brighton. Remember me Brian? Anyway, that was all fun and games, but now she’s pushing her late 40’s, the partying has taken a toll. Gone were the days when she would dress up or care about her general demeanour. She can’t even remember what music she likes anymore. Or what a big straight cock in her mouth looks like either. Tough times babes. Let her in. CASE STUDY 4: Straight Lads “Get yer tits out for the lads! GET.YER.TITS.OUT! Oi Oi!” Boring Barrys always come in a group or ‘flock’ of arseholes, as it’s scientifically known. They’ve got their Saturday night trousers on and their near-identical shirts. These are never tucked in. Criminal isn’t it? They heard that there are lots of fit birds in gay clubs, so they will sacrifice their time and ignore their uncomfortable feelings around gay guys just for a shag. They might shout ‘dyke’ or ‘poof’ from their car at you on the weekdays, however now they’re here, they’ll tell you how accepting they are of “you lot” and really don’t mind your “lifestyle choice”. Of all people in this world, this group I love to say no to the most. Actually saying no to them induces a half orgasm in me. Not only that, but I love mentioning how homoerotic they all look in their super duper cutesy same outfits. Do you watch straight porn together, suck each other off, then pretend it ain’t gay? Bet you do. How about you show me that big straight meaty cock on the door and I might let you in. How much you do you really wanna come in here? Disclaimer: The brave, cute cock-showing ones are OK to come in and get pounced on. They’ll thank me for it one day. CASE STUDY 5: “I am here to rob phones and your bags. Ta.” He looks dodgy, he smells dodgy, and his pointy shoes under boot-cut jeans SCREAM dodgy. He comes with a female friend sporting roots down to her knees, pretending they are a couple in love. If I spotted him on a plane I would seriously tell the staff from Gatwick to go and check if their doors were locked. Make sure you wave your finger in a motion that indicates “No!”. Just be careful if you open your mouth, he’ll steal your gold fillings. Readers; should this guide help any of you trying to excel in your door whore jobs, or just allow you to get into clubs without making an absolute show of yourselves, now or in the future, my job will be done. Do you have any complaints, questions or queries? Because I don’t give a fuck. 13 qxmagazine.com QX_1095_Memoirs of a doorwhore.indd 13 01/03/2016 17:57 HARD UP HOMODROP THURSDAYS AT SWEATBOX Hey Mark, for those unfamiliar with Soho’s famous sauna (which can’t be many people), describe Sweatbox for us in one sentence. Well our tag line has always been: “London’s busiest sauna with the hottest guys”. So I guess I’d use that. And what kind of guys come to Sweatbox? We have a reputation for a younger crowd – having the gym, Under 25 nights and being in Soho all play a part in that. But we do actually have a good mix of ages. I’m far too old to tolerate any age discrimination! So obviously Chariots closed a lot of its saunas last weeks; I’m hearing that Sweatbox is busier than ever though? We’ve been pretty rammed for quite a few years now. My staff were terrified that we’d be inundated when they heard about the Chariots closures but to be honest it hasn’t made a huge difference. We attract a different crowd. And I’m not sure they were that busy towards the end anyway. On a personal level I’m sad to see Chariots Shoreditch go. The décor was hilarious and back in the day, when it was busy, it could be a lot of fun! What can we expect from Hard Up Thursdays? Well – big surprise here – the same as Hard Up Mondays only on a Thursday now as well. So from now on, anyone 25 or under can get in for free 8am to midnight every Monday and Thursday provided they bring photo ID with proof of age. But don’t stay beyond midnight or you will lose your £10 deposit and we’ll turn you into a pumpkin. Or something. Oh and new rule: Under 25’s have to bring their own towel or pay £1 a time for ours. Paying customers and members get 2 free towels each up front. We had to do this as our washing machines couldn’t keep up with the wash load! Hopefully having a Hard Up Thursday as well as Monday will reduce the line out the door – it was starting to get a bit insane. Who is your favourite producer? There are so many good producers out there... I have a preference for producers rooted in the sound of old school Detroit and Chicago house and disco, such as Kim Ann Foxman, Hannah Holland, Mystic Bill, Green Velvet, Twirl... Maurice Fulton especially is a reference to me (he produced Gipsy Woman by Crystal Waters back in the 90’s.) I love his dark twist on disco and afro beats. He produced two of my all time favourite albums with Japanese singer MU, a wicked blend of samba beats with punkish, broken English vocals. More recently I’ve really enjoyed the tracks coming out of Lobster Boy records, a London bass label, with producers such as Redlight, Melé, Mak & Pasteman & New York Transit Authority. Describe HOMODROP in 5 words: Happy. Friendly. Unpretentious. Groovy. Homos! If you had a time machine and could visit any dance floor anywhere, at any time, where would you want to do dancing? I would love to travel back in time and party at “Le Palace” in Paris in the early 80’s. It’s to me the ultimate fantasy of Parisian decadent cosmopolitan glamour... “Le Palace” was this legendary theatre turned night-club where the likes of Grace Jones, Serge Gainsbourg, Andy Warhol, Mick Jagger, Yves St-Laurent, Thierry Mugler, etc. would party. It was known as a glamorous yet inclusive place that threw rich, poor, gay, straight and all races together. What’s your favourite track at the moment? “U Won’t C Me” by Mystic Bill on Snuff Trax. Lyrical and groovy... Stuck on repeat. The HOMODROP crew is so glad to have you on board again. Tell us which track you really want to play? “Good Groove” by Playin 4’ the City. A house track with a hint of disco and a French touch... It doesn’t get more HOMODROP than this! Bamboo Hermann is a resident DJ at Homodrop. And so on the 13th last weekend the Eagle was celebrating its 12th anniversary. Just to confuse things a bit, I suppose. Herded by the fabulous Scottee, a large crowd of supporters, including well-known DJs, had gathered to help the friendly crew mark the day as it should be. A free buffet was provided for the peckish and a lucky punter went home with a hamper of alcoholic goodies for having managed to remember and share their story of a memorable night in the place. Remembering Saturday might prove a little trickier after that! Thankfully there are surely many memorable nights to come yet. Here’s to the next 12 years! “Here’s to the next 12 years!” 18 qxmagazine.com QX_1095_Club Reviews.indd 18 01/03/2016 18:00 QX 1095 MASTER 1.indd 19 01/03/2016 18:04 BRÜT 1st Birthday 27/02/16 13-16 Allhallows Lane, EC4R 3UE Words and Photos by Victor Hensel-Coe Happy BRÜTDAY to all the BRÜTS! The big, strong, beautiful night for bears turns 1! And what a fantastic year for the bold newcomer with big balls it’s been. We return to the packed out Steelyard once more to the sight and sound of a 1,000 bears grinding to BRÜT beats. In Vault 1, Tom Stephan, Pagano, Ross Jones, Ben Jamin and Louis Lennon kept gorgeous gogos, filth and fur moving to funky tech house, while in Vault 2 the disco jive was alive, thanks to DJ Dreadful, the Meat Boys and Baby Bear funking it up! That’s not all this night has in store for us though, ‘cos in the not too distant Brüture the bears, blokes, cubs and hunks, that rock the Steelyard are taking the sound of beef to Barcelona Bear Pride Friday 25th of March. They bring a much-needed sequin splattering of cabaret camp to an otherwise ambient neighbourhood. This Saturday they’ve got Sandra performing. She’s one of our absolute faves. She’s outrageous! We’re not sure why she hasn’t been arrested yet actually. Oh Rupert Street! Actually, Rupert Street might be the largest gay venue in Soho! Is it? We’re not sure. We’ll have to go there for a drink later and take some measurements. Rupert Street have friendly international staff and delicious international cocktails. How international! They’re also conveniently located on…yes! Rupert Street! A stone’s throw away from Piccadilly Circus, one of the world’s major landmarks. Virgin Xtravaganzha Bloc Bar 18 Kentish Town Road, Camden, NW1 9NX Bloc Bar are a super-hip purple-hued, woodwalled gay dance bar slash schmoozing mise-en-scene, situated in London’s popular and punky Camden district! This week, look out for Virgin’s Sunday Mass on Sunday night from 7pm. Religious musings straight from the mouth of one of our faves, Virgin Xtravaganza! Roxx Ku Bar 30 Lisle Street, Soho, WC2H 7BA Bridge Bar 8 Voltaire Road, Clapham, SW4 6DH Those Ku kids NEVER STOP. It’s go, go, go. Ku, Ku, Ku. BOYS BOYS BOYS! At Ku, it’s all about glam urban vibes. It’s buckets of champagne. It’s clandestine, gentle flirting with chic middle-eastern businessmen. It’s Italian suits and Italian beer. It’s Chinese technology in China Town. It’s an English bar in an English city. Undeniably. It’s perfect for salubrious after-work drinks. A frosty gin and tonic. Ooh lovely! Nestled under a railway bridge in Clapham is Bridge Bar! Lots of lovely exposed brick, lovely warming cocktails and now karaoke on Thursday nights, with drag queen Roxx. No doubt she stalks up and down between tables being catty, and hilarity ensues. Bridge Bar is lovely and chilled, and its clientele are consistently TOTES GORGE. Associated with the actual White Party in Palm Springs just up the American coast from Miami, you definitely felt the hot vibe with beats coming from those international hunks the Sex Shooters, DJing all night on the main floor, which was decked out all in white. The Miami heat is all felt from the smokin’ hot KU Bar Boys on regular occasions and especially so on this occasion, featuring a mixture of hot pants, short shorts, Speedos and glitter were the only items donned by these Adonises. Hosted by the adorable and ever so friendly Nieko, always looking fabulous with an outfit for every occasion, we totally love his style. Downstairs in the Klub you were kept moving and shaken by DJ Kerol Garcia, looking so hot like she just walked of a gorgeous Palm Springs beach, she definitely kept that White Party vibe going until the wee hours. And after about 20 different fabulous drinks, we can’t remember anymore. Can’t wait for the next White Party!! “It was certainly hot in KU Bar this past weekend as they held a Palm Springs White Party.” 24 qxmagazine.com QX_1095_Bar Reviews.indd 24 01/03/2016 17:58 QX 1095 MASTER 1.indd 25 01/03/2016 18:10 Seven Days to Save The Yard Westminster City Council recently submitted a Listing Application to Historic England for 57 Rupert Street, home of The Yard. Unfortunately, this application was turned down on the grounds that the building has been altered over time. As the landlord of the premises has submitted yet another planning application to Westminster City Council, the decision not to list the venue leaves the Yard heavily exposed. The landlord’s application (his third), seeks to build studio apartments above the historic stable roof and cover the courtyard. Should the application go through it will likely see the Yard close. Together with Westminster City Council and the Soho Society, The Yard is now in the process of appealing the decision and continuing the to fight to The Yard has recently had its listing application rejected. This means the current landlord is free to continue pursuing his plans for redevelopment, plans that will likely see the venue close. The Yard is calling on all its veterans to help save it from joining the long list of LGBT venue closures. “ We must demonstrate the important role The Yard has played in the history of the LGBTQ community.” save this building from inappropriate development. After the recent decision by Historic England to start listing ion account of LGBTQ heritage – with the Vauxhall Tavern being the first example of this – the Yard feel there is a real chance to help fight the decision and secure it’s future. They want to hear your stories; from the opening of The Yard in 1993 and its early years shaping LGBTQ culture in Soho. What were your experiences of visiting this new open bar? What was different about it from earlier meeting places? Who met there in the early days? What events did you attend or recollect taking place? What LGBTQ initiatives, organisations or charities had their origins or meetings at The Yard? By completing this survey - www. yardbar.co.uk/ savetheyard you will help them build the case for listing the Yard as a building of significance to the LGBT community, and could help save it from redevelopment and preserve its future. The survey must be completed by 8th March. Andy Jones, owner of The Yard, says: “We must demonstrate the important role The Yard has played in the history of the LGBTQ community. Any information or memories you have about The Yard’s early days is so vital to helping us get this building listed and preserved for future generations to enjoy. Getting the Listing Application granted would mark and celebrate 57 Rupert Street’s architectural, ultural and historic interest. Special care and consideration would therefore be brought to the planning process so that its future is protected.” To complete the survey please visit: www.yardbar.co.uk/ savetheyard. A rather apt line. As I sat enthralled next to recent QX cover star and apparently now dedicated follower of the arts, Gina Gee, as she delicately sips on a craft lager. An intimate 75 minutes with this entrancing actor left both of us with the overwhelming feeling that we’d been through something together – a sort of unorthodox group therapy. The story, adapted from Josh Kilmer-Purcell’s autobiography, tells a tale of glamour, squalor, love and lust. Hot shot advertising exec by QX_1095_Review Section.indd 32 Mark Hamil day and a delicious combination of Amy Pohler and Courtney Love by night, Josh is the effervescent drag queen Aquadisiac. Our vivacious blond bombshell is fascinating, intense and vulnerable as she stumbles from one dramatic moment to the next – be that lipsyncing to Blondie’s Rip Her To Shreds, or tip-toeing over a bound British man begging to be abused – a standard Saturday night in East London then. Quite frankly, her goldfish bowl boobs and sparkly pink dress is one of the best drag get ups I’ve ever seen, take note London queens! Cut between the late nights and bright lights of New York’s 90s gay scene and crack addict boyfriend Jack’s Upper East Side apartment, Stuart expertly portrays the dizzying spiral of alcoholism and selfloathing – a ‘Class A diamond studded fuck up’. The discourse around drug taking and its effects on sexual relationships feels poignantly relevant given the current gay landscape of chemsex and chillouts – perhaps even more so given the younger generations disposition to believe they were the first to do anything – sorry boys! There’s something of a Hamlet character in this young man’s life. While the subject could feel removed from ‘real life’, you can actually relate to the tempestuous flow of his first years in New York. With the cathartic close of the derobing of Aqua, she relinquishes her hold on Josh’s life and gives him the chance to come clean (Hi Hilary Duff!) and move on, leaving the emotional and physical baggage in storage before it is washed away. A heartfelt thank you to Josh and Tom for letting us borrow Aqua for an hour and live life on the wild side. 01/03/2016 18:19 QX 1095 MASTER 1.indd 29 01/03/2016 18:55 Jon Pleased Wimmin at Dalston Superstore #J U L I A S AY S ... by Princess Julia There’s nothing wrong with having a dream. QX 1095 MASTER 1.indd 31 FREE 01/03/2016 18:16 C A B Photos: Scott Chalmers Meet Joe Black Hey Joe! So your name coincidentally matches your style, but it’s your real name, right? Yes. I have such an issue with duality, I get far too confused. It’s just easier for me to stick to the same name. And yeah, it sounds dark, too, right? I’m so goth even my surname is black. It’s clearly fate! What first drew you to the vaudevillian style of performance? Aesthetically and stylistically, it just appealed to me so much more than anything else. It’s also quite an open word in terms of actual performance. It can be a number of things as long as it sits on a certain vibe. And it just so happens that vibe floats my hypothetical boat. What’s your twist? My shows are macabre, funny, silly, sad, completely ludicrous and I like to think, very feel-good. Thats what you need from cabaret, right? A wonky raconteur and a gin-addled A R E T By Jason Reid A self-described gin drinking cabaret darling, musical comedy misfit, drag clown and acid tongued ringmaster, Joe Black is a performer we’ve had our eye on for a while here at QX Towers. And finally, this week, Jason Reid got to meet the king of cabaret noir... cabaret reprobate. That sort of sums my shows up. As a performer, do you believe humour is limitless? Yes. Humour is limitless. Comedy can take on absolutely anything. Though people seem to take that and wave it around like a get out of jail free card. So there should be a degree of personal responsibility, too? I think the more sensitive the subject matter, the more thought you need to put into it; and in turn the more intelligent the comment needs to be. Most importantly the punchline needs to be absolutely fucking genius. If someone is playing around with something that is clearly going to offend a large amount of people but treats it as a flippant “I can say what I want because that’s comedy” then they are just being a bit of a dick. What was that line from Spiderman? With great comedy, comes great responsibility? Except with dick jokes. You don’t need to be responsible about those. Do you ever censor yourself? I censor myself very occasionally. I’ve got to a point now that I know when I’m going too far, or whether to back off just that little bit. How do you want audience members to feel after your performance? Like they’ve been on a journey with me, and that we’ve connected. Not necessarily in a deep and meaningful “I UNDERSTAND YOU” way. In a way that an audience feels like they can trust me to just do whatever I want and that they’ll be entertained and distracted from the miserable cold ridiculous thing that is reality. Let’s touch on your androgynous aesthetic, which is always flawless and chic. How has this manifested over the years? Oh thank you Jason, you charmer you! Well over the past year I feel like I’ve really refined it. Now when I look back over old photos, I think “what the hell was I doing?”, though I’ll probably think that in another year too. I’ve gone from shabby suit wearing - with too much eyeliner - to full-blown 1920’s sex clown. I’ve worn eye-patches, playsuits, tuxedos, old bits of fabric safety- pinned on, fez’s, bowlers, berets, no shoes, flat shoes, platform shoes. If it’s ridiculous, I’ve probably put it on. Recently I’ve put a lot more focus into costume and image than I ever have before. I’ve vetoed more things, and tried to make everything as chic and nice as I can. I think it’s working? It’s definitely working. You have a deep fondness for musical theatre. Which musical would you star in if you could? There’s a few dream roles. Firstly, the emcee from Cabaret; for obvious reasons, right? Fagin from Oliver, because he was my favourite character as a kid. And the Child Catcher from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, again for obvious reasons. What’s your proudest career highlight to date? Supporting Eddie Izzard at the Southsea Comedy Festival. I enjoyed that very much. 32 qxmagazine.com QX_1095_Cabaret.indd 32 01/03/2016 18:08 t s a E n's o d n Lo GEST BIGauna S QX 1095 MASTER 1.indd 33 01/03/2016 18:16 Yo ur gui d e t o t h e w e e k ’s b e s t B A R , C L UB & C A B A R E T e v e n t s in L o n d o n 03 March 09 March M U S T S THURSDAY 3RD MARCH CLUBS & EVENTS Quiz Me Maybe? / Clam Jam at Dalston Superstore: 117 Kingsland High St, E8 2PB. 7pm-2:30am. Clearly and naturally you are worried. The most important things are how long the lump has been there, and where it is. The common signs of testicular cancer are a new, usually painless lump that develops on a ball, not attached or beside the ball, but on the ball. Quite rightly, your boyfriend needs to see his GP as soon as possible. But be reassured that if it is cancer (and there are lots of other more common causes of lumps!) then treatment often works well and more than 9 in 10 men with testicular cancer can be cured. Your balls should feel smooth when you touch them. Then at the top and to the back of each ball is the epididymis (this stores the sperm). This feels like a soft swelling attached to the testis, and can be quite tender if you press it firmly. Testicular cancer arises from the ball itself. The lump is often painless but some people notice some pain or discomfort coming from the affected ball. Around half of all cases occur in men aged under 35 and it is the most common cancer in males aged 15-44 years. There are about 2,000 new cases in the UK each year. The highest rate of testicular cancer occurs in white men in northern Europe. Once your boyfriend is seen by the GP, if they think it could be cancer they will order an ultrasound scan. This is a simple, painless test which uses sound waves to scan the testes. an operation to remove the affected ball. This alone may be curative if the cancer is in an early stage and has not spread. If the cancer has spread then further surgery may also be needed for some men after radiotherapy or chemotherapy, to remove any cancer cells “Be reassured that even if the worst happens and it is cancer, we can now cure over 95% of cases.” This test can tell if the lump is a solid mass (likely to be a tumour) or a non-cancerous (benign) cyst (a fluid-filled lump which is common in the testes). If cancer is diagnosed then the usual treatment is to have present in the lymph nodes of the tummy (abdomen) or chest. But be reassured that even if the worst happens and it is cancer, we can now cure over 95% of cases. All guys should regularly check their or their partner’s balls! 46 qxmagazine.com QX_1095_Health.indd 46 01/03/2016 18:15 QX 1095 MASTER 1.indd 47 01/03/2016 18:53 m cher.
