There are six MANTA RAY utility anchors with light to super heavy duty holding capacities.
All MANTA RAY anchors are made of galvanized ductile iron, can be driven with the same drive steel set and
can be tested to the desired holding capacity with the Anchor Locker.

MK-B
Largest of the MANTA RAY anchors and is only used in the very soft and
usually wet Class 7 – 8 soils to accommodate up to 32M* guy capacity. Because of its large size and length, the MK-B exhibits a larger pull–back during
anchor locking than the rest of the MANTA RAY anchor family. For this reason, the MK-B is routinely not driven any less than 14 feet deep prior to anchor locking. Use with 1" (25mm) Utility Anchor rod.
MR-SR
The second largest of the MANTA RAY anchors. It is designed to accommodate 32M* guy capacity in softer class 5 – 6 soils. In extremely soft, wet class
7 – 8 soils it may be able to accommodate 12M* or 18M* guy capacity. Use
with 1" or 3/4" (25mm or 19mm) Utility Anchor rod.
MR-1
The MR-1 is the most common of the MANTA RAY anchors. It is designed to accommodate 32M* guy capacity in normal (medium) class 3 – 5
soils. In softer class 6 soils it can accommodate 18M* and 12M* guy capacity. Use with 1" or 3/4" (25mm or 19mm) Utility Anchor rod.
MR-2
The fourth largest of the MANTA RAY anchors. It is designed to accommodate 32M* guy capacity in hard class 1 – 3 soils. In normal (medium) class 4 –
5 soils it can accommodate 18M* and 12M* guy capacity. Use with 1" or
3/4" (25mm or 19mm) Utility Anchor rod.
MR-3
Slightly larger than the MR-4 and is designed to accommodate 18M* guy capacity in Class 1 – 5 soils and 12M* Guy Capacity in Class 1-6 soils. The
MR-3 is the anchor of choice for most CATV applications. Use with
5/8" (16mm) Utility Anchor rod.
MR-4
The smallest of the MANTA RAY anchors. It is
designed to accommodate 12M* guy capacity in
Class 1 – 3 soils. Use with 5/8" (16mm) Utility
Anchor rod.

MANTA RAY ANCHOR DESCRIPTION
MANTA RAY anchors are designed to drive into the ground, at any desired angle-from vertical to very
shallow angles. The patented internal drive radius feature helps the anchor remain on a straight path during
driving, because the contact surface between the anchor and the drive steel is ahead of the maximum crosssectional area of the anchor. Thus the anchor is in effect “pulled, not pushed into the ground”. The close fit of
the anchor to the drive steel also helps the directional stability of the anchor. The out turned lip or “Duckbill”
on the trailing edge of the anchor helps to balance the profile of the anchor, which also improves directional
stability of the anchor.
The star point and sharpened leading edges of the wings help the anchor “break through” layers of hard soil
with a small profile before the large profile of the wings and shackle encounter the hard soil. The interface
between the anchor and drive steel is a cylindrical hole with a hemispherical bottom. The tip of the drive steel
is also hemispherical shaped to match the bottom of the hole in the anchor. This ensures positive bearing
between the drive steel and the anchor, and it prevents deformation of the drive steel (mushrooming).
The “Duckbill” on the trailing edge of the anchor helps the anchor turn to its anchor-lock position, by digging
into undisturbed soil, when the anchor rod is pulled upward by the anchor locker.

THE MANTA RAY CONCEPT
MANTA RAY patented anchors are driven into the ground, from ground level, with standard hand held hydraulic /
pneumatic / electric / gasoline powered equipment. The vast majority of installers use hydraulic or pneumatic
equipment, which they already own. Anchors can also be installed/driven with a mounted breaker on a skid steer
(Bobcat, etc.), backhoe, and other equipment.
The anchors do not disturb the soil during installation, but actually compact the soil around them when being
driven.
After driving, the anchors are tipped into “anchor-lock” position in undisturbed soil using Foresight’s anchor
locker. This provides a proof test of the anchor, which immediately tells the installer the holding capacity of the
soil. This removes the guess work from anchoring, because the Foresight anchor locker pulls directly on the anchor
and does not rely on a correlation between some other parameter (such as installation torque) to provide holding
capacity measurements. Installation and testing of MANTA RAY anchors is simultaneous.
The MANTA RAY anchors are designed to be compatible with standard utility screw anchor rods.

The MR-SR is the second largest of the Manta Ray anchors. It is designed to accommodate 32M*

The MR-3 is slightly smaller than the MR-2 and is designed to accommodate 18M* guy capacity in
Class 1 – 5 soils and 12M* Guy Capacity in Class 1-6 soils. In class 1 soils a 4” diameter pilot hole

MANTA RAY ANCHOR LOCKER

because installation and anchor holding capacity proof testing are simultaneous!
The hydraulic powered MANTA RAY anchor
locker pulls up on the anchor rod to set the anchor
in the ground at the desired holding capacity.
Portable and lightweight, the anchor locker consists of a base plate, hydraulic ram, jaws and
adapter setting bar. The anchor locker is operated
by the same hydraulic power source as the jackhammer.
The desired holding capacity is measured by the
gauge on the anchor locker as the anchor is ro-

The anchor locker consists of a open center hydraulic cylinder with a control valve and a pressure gauge, a welded
base, an adapter setting bar, a tapered jaw set and a metal storage box.
The adapter setting bar attached (screwed on) to the anchor rod after the anchor has been driven to depth. It provides a means for the tapered jaws of the anchor locker to grip and pull on the anchor rod. The base reacts the pull
up forces of the hydraulic ram during anchor locking. It is placed over the adapter setting bar and allows the hydraulic cylinder to align itself with the anchor rod at any angle resulting in a direct pull on the anchor.
The hydraulic cylinder is then placed over the adapter setting bar. When the control valve is engaged to extend the
cylinder, the tapered jaws grip the adapter setting bar—which pulls upward on the anchor rod and tips the anchor
underground.
The control valve has a factory adjusted bypass relief valve, which limits the
maximum hydraulic pressure for safety.
After installing the MANTA RAY to the
proper depth, an upward pull rotates
the anchor into the anchor lock position
in undisturbed soil, like a toggle bolt in
dirt.

Hydraulic / Pneumatic Jack Hammers (Breakers)
The MANTA RAY anchor was developed to accommodate existing jackhammers normally in use
throughout the utility industry, specifically hydraulic / pneumatic. These anchors have been efficiently
driven with both types of hammers. The manufacturer recommends a minimum 90 pound hammer, or
an equivalent, with chuck size of 1 1/4" x 6" (32mm x 152mm) or 1 1/8" x 6" (29mm x 152mm) shank.
Some common hydraulic varieties used are the Stanley BR-87, Fairmont 85, and other Gas or Electric
hammers may be used successfully in soft soils, with smaller MR-3 & MR-4 anchors, but are not recommended over hydraulic / pneumatic hammers.
Also, MANTA RAY anchors can be rapidly installed with mechanized equipment such as skid steers,
back hoes and more!

All MANTA RAY anchors are designed to be used with utility standard 7" (2.14m) screw anchor rods. In cases where deeper installations are required, 3 ½." (1.10 m) sections and couplers are available. These anchor rods are available through Foresight Products
LLC.
The MANTA RAY MK-B, MR-SR, MR-1 and MR-2 are designed to be used with 1" or ¾" (25mm or 19mm) rods, which utilize a
1"- 8 UNC thread. The MANTA RAY MR-3 and MR-4 are designed to be used with 5/8" (16mm) rods, which utilize an 11/16"-11
UNS thread. Utility standard thimbleyes (single, double, triple) are also available through Foresight Products LLC.

MANTA RAY DRIVE STEEL
Manufactured from high grade metals, sections of the drive
steel are coupled together as needed while the anchor is being
driven so that the driving operation can be accomplished safely
from ground level. The drive steel set can install all the anchor
models.
Carrying Case
The MANTA RAY drive steel is designed to allow anchors to be driven to the proper depth (usually 7-8 ft or 2.1m to 2.4m)
without placing the jack hammer above shoulder height. This is accomplished by using drive steel composed of 4 sections: one
radius tip piece to interface with the anchor, two extension pieces and one shank piece to fit in the chuck of the breaker. 1 1/8
and 1 1/4 x 6” (29mm and 32mm x 152mm) shank sizes are standard. The drive steel pieces are held in alignment with Foresight’s patented couplers, which were designed specifically for this use.
All MANTA RAY drive steel sets are provided with an extractor bar which allows the use of the MANTA RAY anchor locker
to extract the steel in the rare cases where they cannot be manually extracted.
MANTA RAY drive steel is manufactured from high grade tool steel and carburized for maximum strength, wear resistance and
energy transmission.
