Harbor Hills Goes Green
The residents of Harbor Hills have discussed
revitalizing the onsite community garden for some
time and recently made their dream into a reality.
With guidance
from volunteer
Master Gardener
Elizabeth Sala,
residents began
the community
garden transformation. Throughout the summer, a
group of residents, staff, and the Master Gardener,
worked to clean the garden, prepare the soil, and
plant vegetables. The residents are committed to From left to right :Victoria Leyva, Shelia Woods,

“The Hunger Games.” The students enjoy participating in the program because
Ms. Pacheco makes reading fun and exciting. As a result, their reading levels are

Clapping and laughter sums up the evening of September 6th, when a group of 27
West County residents attended a Hollywood Bowl concert. Thanks to the
generosity of Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, and the Housing Authority of the
County of Los Angeles (HACoLA) who provided transportation, residents
enjoyed Conductor Tovey leading the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The crowd was
pleased by the grand finale featuring the very comedic duo of Igudesman and Joo
who entertained with the violin and piano.
Fun at the Fair
Residents of SouthBay Gardens took a summer day trip to the Los Angeles County
Fair. Residents enjoyed live music, dancing, exhibits, and high wire acrobats.
They sampled barbeque chicken, ribs, hamburgers, hot dogs, and fried ice cream.
They also watched a live parade with vintage cars, marching bands, and clowns
walking on stilts.

Nueva Maravilla resident Leticia Ramos is
participating in the Public Housing Family SelfSufficiency (FSS) program. Leticia is realizing
her goal of being a business owner and owning a baking supply store. She recently
obtained a business license and sellers permit for her baking service. As the owner
of Cake Wonders, she involves her entire family in the process. After being
enrolled in the FSS program for less than a year, she has established an escrow
account that allows her to save money towards her business. Contact Angelina
Romero, FSS Coordinator at [email protected] to obtain more
information.
Back to School Jam
Resource Fair
2012
The Annual Back to School Jams are
hosted by the HACoLA. Each family
housing development provided
backpacks, school supplies, and
uniforms to participating school-aged
youth. Partnering agencies staffed
informational booths that provided
educational and health resources to
families. We are very appreciative to
our donors: Target Stores and Shelter
Partnership. Over 1,200 backpacks
were distributed this year.
