Thank You - St Therese of the Infant Jesue Catholic Church Parish
Pentecost Sunday God our Father, Let the Spirit you sent on your church to begin the teaching of the gospel continue to work in the world through the hearts of all who believe. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, One God, for ever and ever. Father of light, from whom every good gift comes, send your spirit into our lives with the power of a mighty wind, and by the flame of your wisdom open the horizons of our minds. Loosen our tongues to sing your praise in words beyond the power of speech, for without your Spirit man could never raise his voice in words of peace or announce the truth that Jesus is Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit one God, forever and ever. Beggars at our gates Dear Parishioners, When entering or departing from the Church or other parish buildings please be “gentle as a lamb but wise as a serpent” when dealing with beggars and panhandlers. I would like to discourage this activity from taking place here at Saint Therese. A few weekends ago there were a few people begging from our parishioners at various entrance doors to the Church. One person’s story was that she needed money for medicine for her children. Children who are from needy families and who might have serious medical conditions certainly qualify for assistance. Most likely if you gave this person one dollar she was going to use it to feed a drug or alcohol addiction. By giving even a small amount as a dollar it is not helping the person with their long term needs. Please do not encourage this certain element of our society by giving them a quick small handout. It only encourages them to be manipulative to us and to frequent our property. By being “gentle as a lamb” in ones approach it also may diffuse any anger or potential violence or vandalism to our parishioners or parish property by these deprived and sometimes depraved of our society. Fr. Vincent Pastoral Council Dear Parishioners, Several months ago in the bulletin, I wrote you about our need for Pastoral Council Leadership. Pastoral Councils were established a few decades ago here in the United States in the wake of the Second Vatican Council. This is the body which visions for the Parish. By Church Law, a Parish is not required to have a Pastoral Council but this is highly desirable. We must by Church Law have a Finance Council which is a body that serves as personal advisors to the Pastor on the temporal issues of the Parish. This we have at Saint Therese and this group (Ida Chavez, Tony Trujillo, Michael Frongillo, George Lucero, Diane Griego and Liz Baca) meets every month as my personal advisors. The Pastoral Council has not met since December at which time our fine parishioner , Corkey Baca completed his term with our gratitude and recognition. At that time, I put out an appeal for any of you to come forward who wished to step into the Leadership positions of the Parish via Pastoral Council. Please note that ultimately the Pastoral Council is your Leadership Council and must come from you and your interest in the good and progress of Saint Therese Parish. It cannot come from me or be my responsibility as I already have my personal advisory council in the Finance Council. Certain duties of the Pastoral Council Chair would be to call meetings, set the Agenda and facilitate meetings with the other members who are representatives of the Parish Programs and Ministries. If interested in the Pastoral Council, please contact me by setting an appointment through the Parish Office 344.8050. Thank you. Fr. Vincent Life Teen Fundraiser Please be sure to keep on track with your teens. Take some time to talk about the decisions they make and how they affect their lives. God Bless & Have a blessed day! Volunteers Needed: The ASF has a program, called Thresholds, which assists men and women who are coming out of prison and really want to make a positive change in their lives. We do not accept violent offenders or sex offenders. We accept those who have been involved in rehabilitation programs in the prison as “mentees”. We need volunteers from parish communities who can work together on teams of 2-4 people to offer encouragement, advice, and practical assistance. Mentor Teams will have the opportunity to meet their “mentee” a couple of times before they agree to assist them, and then assist them for one year afterwards. We all need good support in life so please consider offering this kind of help to our incarcerated brothers and sisters. Training will be provided by the ASF and the NM Corrections Department. Thresholds is supported by Archbishop Michael J. Sheehan, the ACA, and The Catholic Foundation. Call the Pastoral Outreach office at the Catholic Center for more information (505) 831-8174.
