About Device Manager
Device Manager automatically loads and operates in the background of the computer, establishing communication between
Turning Technologies hardware and software.
Device Manager is compatible with the following hardware:

Aside from using Device Manager as a stand alone application, Device Manager can be accessed from CPS, ExamView, Flow
and WorkSpace.
This section covers the following topics:

To reopen Device Manager, navigate to Finder > Applications > eInstruction > Device

IMPORTANT
In order to use Turning Technologies whiteboards (DualBoard, Touch Board and Touch Board
Plus), Linux users must install and run the Ubuntu GNOME environment. Refer to Opening
Device Manager in Ubuntu GNOME on page 6.

1 Click Dash Home and search for Device Manager.
NOTE
If File > Exit is selected, Device Manager closes.
To reopen Device Manager, search for the program in Dash
Home or follow the path: Home > eInstruction > Device
Manager > Device Manager.
Turning Technologies whiteboards must be used in the Ubuntu GNOME environment. Follow the steps below to install
GNOME and open Device Manager.
Before You Begin
Install the GNOME environment:
1 Ubuntu 12.04 users: open Terminal and run one the following commands:

sudo apt-get install gnome -session -fallback
l
sudo apt-get install gnome -session -panel
2 Ubuntu 14.04 users: open Terminal and run the following command:

sudo apt-get install gnome -session -flashback
3 Ubuntu 12.04 users must log in with GNOME Classic (No effects). Ubuntu 14.04 users must log in with GNOME
Flashback (Metacity)
How to open Device Manager...
1 Click Applications and select Education.
Device Manager Menu
Device Manager has several functions and options
that can be accessed from the notification area
(PC)/Menu Extras area (Mac)/Dash Home (Linux).
IMPORTANT
Menu options differ depending on
your operating system (OS) and
installed programs.
CPS
To open CPS, select the CPS option from the
Device Manager menu. CPS allows you to create

and/or import classes, students, lessons, assignments and standards, as well as administer response sessions and generate
reports. CPS requires the use of CPS IR, Pulse or Spark, or ResponseCard RF, RF LCD or NXT, clickers and their
appropriate receivers.
Curtain
The Curtain tool hides the current page in the WorkSpace Annotation window, or
hides the current desktop screen in Mouse Mode. Handles on all four sides of the
Curtain make it possible to “open” the curtain to reveal a portion of the underlying
display, while keeping the rest of the window covered. Click and drag the sizing squares on each corner of the Curtain to
change the size of the curtain.

The default color of the Curtain is black. Click

Device Manager automatically loads and establishes communication between Turning Technologies software (CPS,
ExamView, Flow, WorkSpace) and hardware (clickers, whiteboards, Mobi). To access the application, select Device Manager
from the Device manager menu.
ExamView Test Generator
Select the ExamView Test Generator option to create tests, quizzes, study guides and worksheets using multiple question
formats, pictures, tables, graphs, charts and other multimedia elements. Upload question banks and tests to Learning
Management Systems (LMS) such as ANGEL, Blackboard and Blackboard Vista.
ExamView Test Manager
Select the ExamView Test Manager option to manage class rosters, collect data and generate reports.
ExamView Test Player
The ExamView Test Player is an application that allows participants to take tests and view study guides or worksheets. Select
the ExamView Test Player option to open the ExamView Test Player.
ExamView Import Utility
Selecting the ExamView Import Utility opens a program that converts RTF files to ExamView question banks.
Exit
Select Exit to close the Device Manager application.
Flow
Select the Flow option from the Device Manager main menu to open the Flow assessment software. Flow permits polling in
any environment and is compatible with most Turning Technologies hardware. Flow can be used with Microsoft PowerPoint®,
Microsoft Word®, Apache OpenOffice™ and many other software applications. Flow communicates with both clickers and
virtual response pads (vPads).

Lesson Builder
Lesson Builder is installed with Flow, allowing for the creation, modification and adaption of Flow lessons. To open Lesson
Builder, select the Lesson Builder option from the Device Manager main menu.
On-screen Keyboard
The On-screen Keyboard allows for entering text while using the
DualBoard, Touch Board or Mobi. Text can be entered in an
application file or on a page in the WorkSpace Annotation
window. Indicate where to add the typed text by clicking the
location in the Annotation window or in the application file. To
begin typing, tap an On-screen Keyboard key with the pen.
Restart
Select Restart to reopen Device Manager.
Record and Playback
Use the Record and Playback tool to record and playback events, with sound, as they occur. Record audio and screen events
and store them in an AVI file for playback.
Click to begin recording and open the Capture Option window.
Click to stop recording, open the On-screen Keyboard and open the Save AVI File window.
Click to pause the recording.
Click to play the current recording.
Using the Recorder
1 Click
in the notification area (PC)/Menu Extras area (Mac)/Dash Home (Linux Ubuntu 14.04) and select Record
and Playback.
NOTE
Linux Ubuntu 12.04 users can access the Turning Technologies icon from the menu bar.
2 Click

The Capture window is displayed.

3 Select one of the following options:

Partial - This option allows you to select a specific area on your computer screen to be recorded. Click and drag
the mouse over the desired area to set the recording window.
l
Screen - This option records the entire area of your computer screen.
4 Complete the task while the Recorder documents your actions.
5 Click
.
The recording ends, the On-screen Keyboard opens and the Save AVI File window opens.
Optionally, check the box labeled E-mail after save.
6 Name the file and click Save.
If you checked the box labeled E-mail after save, your default email program opens a new email message with the
recording as an attachment.
Select Language
Device Manager offers multiple language support. The System Default option uses the language settings determined by your
operating system (OS).

in the notification area (PC)/Menu Extras area (Mac)/Dash Home (Linux Ubuntu 14.04) and select Select
Language.
NOTE
2 Select the appropriate language from the Select Language window.
Alternatively, the language can be changed from within Device Manager. Open Device Manager, click File and select
Preferences. Select the desired language from the Language drop-down menu.
Spotlight
Use the Spotlight tool to create interest and draw attention to an area of the screen. When the Spotlight tool is selected, a circle
appears in the center of a black curtain. The spotlight opening is transparent and reveals what is directly beneath it on the
screen.

NOTE
Linux Ubuntu 12.04 users can access the Turning Technologies icon from
the menu bar.
The Spotlight window opens.
2 Click and drag the Move cursor to move the spotlight around the screen.
3 Optionally, click
to adjust the shape, color and transparency.

to adjust the size of the spotlight opening.

to close the Spotlight window.
Whiteboard Mode
When Whiteboard Mode is selected, all notes made on the DualBoard, Touch Board or Touch Board Plus can be captured and
saved as pages within WorkSpace for distribution, without the use of the projector.
Starting Whiteboard Mode
1 Click

Whiteboard Mode.
NOTE
Lesson Mode vs. Whiteboard Mode - Lesson Mode has two-way communication. The computer desktop image
projects onto the DualBoard’s surface and the input is mirrored on the projected image. The communication in
Whiteboard Mode is one-way between the DualBoard and computer. A projector is not necessary and computer input is
not communicated back onto the DualBoard.
Capturing Annotations on the DualBoard
1 Place the cap on the pen and click

WorkSpace
Using WorkSpace requires a hardware configuration that includes a device (DualBoard, Touch Board, MobiView, etc.), a
projection surface (if you are not using a DualBoard or Touch Board), a video projector and a computer on which the software is
installed.
There are several WorkSpace "modes," but the primary mode across all platforms is Lesson Mode. In Lesson Mode,
participants can view the presentation while you interact with your computer or other projection surface such as DualBoard.
The Annotation tools allow you to write and draw on the blank page. The Page tools create additional pages and the Multimedia
tools add a variety of multimedia files to the pages in the presentation file.

Connecting Receivers
IMPORTANT
It is recommended to avoid placing the receiver under a podium or desk. If necessary, use a USB
extension cable to make sure the receiver has a clear path and is not blocked by furniture.
1 Plug the receiver into an available USB port.

from the notification area (PC)/Menu Extras area (Mac)/Dash Home (Linux Ubuntu 14.04) and select Device
Manager.
NOTE
Device Manager opens.

Device Manager will automatically detect the device once connected and indicate a
successful connection with a green checkmark.

MobiView
The MobiView and the MultiHub receiver, previously branded as the Mobi receiver, are discussed in this chapter.
Connecting the MultiHub Receiver
IMPORTANT
MobiView must be able to communicate with the WorkSpace software installed on your
computer. This communication link is established either by means of a USB connection or
through wireless (RF). The MultiHub receiver plugs into a USB port on the computer or a powered
USB Hub.
1 Insert the MultiHub receiver into a USB port on the classroom computer.
2 Turn on the MobiView by pressing the blue Power button on the top of the unit.
The message Attempting to Connect is displayed on the MobiView screen.
3 When prompted, press the blue button on the receiver.
4 Tap Continue on the MobiView screen.
5 When the MobiView connects to the MultiHub receiver, the Home Screen appears on the MobiView screen.
TIP
If the message, Unable to Connect… is displayed, confirm the MobiView receiver has been
inserted into a working USB port.
6 In Device Manager, select the MobiView image.
7 Optionally, click

Connecting the DualBoard via USB
1 Turn on your computer.
2 Connect the USB cable to the DualBoard controller box located on the back of the board. The controller box is located
on the bottom right of the board, if the board has already been hung up.
3 Attach the other end of the USB cable into a working USB port on your computer.
Device Manager establishes connection with the DualBoard.
Connecting the DualBoard
The RF receiver works best when it is not plugged into a computer that is under a podium or a desk. If necessary, use a USB
extension cable to remove the RF receiver from under furniture that may shield the RF signal.
1 Connect the AC/DC power adapter to the DualBoard controller box.
2 Plug the opposite end of the AC/DC power adapter into a wall outlet.
3 Plug the end of the RJ12 cable into the DualBoard controller box located on the back of the board. The controller box
is located on the bottom right of the board, if the board has already been hung up.
4 Slide the RF COM plastic grey holster over the board’s frame at the top of the DualBoard.
5 Seat the RF COM into the plastic grey holster.
6 Press the Power switch to the On position.
7 Plug the RF receiver into an available USB port on your computer.
8 Press the pairing button on the RF COM. The blue light will begin to blink.
9 Press the pairing button on the RF receiver.
IMPORTANT
You have two minutes to press the pairing button.
When the two devices have been successfully paired, the blue lights on the receivers will stop blinking and remain a
solid blue.
Pairing the device is a one-time operation.

Connecting the Touch Board via USB
The Touch Board connects to your computer via a USB cable. A separate power supply is not necessary since the Touch
Board is powered through the USB connection.
1 Plug the USB cable into the USB port on the right side of the board.
2 Plug the other end of the USB cable into a working USB port on your
computer.
TIP
A powered USB hub may be used.
3 A red light at the bottom of the board indicates that the board is receiving
power through the USB cable. A blue light indicates the proximity of the
pen to the board.
Connecting the Touch Board Plus
Turning Technologies Device Manager version 7.3 or higher must be installed on your computer prior to installing the Wireless
Kit.
The MultiHub plugs into a USB port on your computer or a powered USB Hub. The RFCOM (Radio Frequency Communicator)
plugs into a wall outlet while positioned in the RFCOM clip that slips over the frame at the side of the Touch Board Plus.
Pairing the device is a one-time operation.
1 Slide the plastic gray clip over the frame at the side of the Touch Board Plus.
2 Seat the RFCOM

3 Connect the appropriate end of the power cord

Calibrating
In order for the DualBoard, Touch Board or Touch Board Plus to properly function, the board must be calibrated.
This section covers the following topics:
Calibrating the DualBoard
The DualBoard must be calibrated in order to assure pen accuracy.
IMPORTANT
Linux users must calibrate the DualBoard in the Ubuntu GNOME environment.
1 Turn on the DualBoard and the computer.
2 Turn on the projector and, if necessary, adjust the image
to fit within the board’s active writing area.
3 Click
on the DualBoard Features Menu .
4 Using the pen, click each calibration target as it appears
on the blue calibration screen. A beep will sound with each
successful click.
5 To cancel the calibration, press the Esc key on your
keyboard or press the bottom rocker button on the pen. To
repeat a calibration point, press the top rocker button.
Alternatively, the DualBoard can be calibrated via Device Manager. To calibrate the DualBoard from within Device
Manager:
a Click
in the notification area (PC)/Menu Extras area (Mac)/Applications (Ubuntu GNOME).
b Select Device Manager.
c Select the DualBoard device from the Device Manager window.
d Select
from the toolbar.
e Follow the instructions on the calibration screen.
IMPORTANT
If the DualBoard and/or projector is moved, you must recalibrate the board via the DualBoard
Features Menu or from the Calibrate icon in Device Manager.
Calibrating the Touch Board via Device Manager
Recommended for OS X and Linux platforms, as well as PC users who need to recalibrate Touch Board.
IMPORTANT
Linux users must calibrate the DualBoard in the Ubuntu GNOME environment.

The steps below walk you through performing a calibration via Device Manager. Aside from using these steps on an OS X or
Linux platform, you can also perform them on a PC if you moved the Touch Board. It is strongly recommended to recalibrate
the Touch Board if the board or projector has been moved.
NOTE
If an error occurs during the calibration process, end the process and start over.
1 From your computer, right click/control-click
(Ubuntu GNOME).

TIP

In addition to the Device Manager calibration, Windows 7 and 8 requires a second
calibration when using the Touch Board independent of WorkSpace. Refer to Calibrating
the Touch Board (Windows 7 and Windows 8) on page 16 for instructions on performing
the second calibration.
Calibrating the Touch Board (Windows 7 and Windows 8)
Before You Begin
You must have administrative privileges to perform the Touch Board 16 pt. calibration. After the initial 16 pt. calibration, a 4 pt.
calibration can be performed by a non-administrative user. If you do not have administrative privileges, contact your IT
department.
1 From your computer, right-click
in the notification area.
The Device Manager window opens.
3 Right/control-click from the Device Manager window.
4 Click Touch Settings.
The Tablet PC Settings window opens.

5 From the Tablet PC Settings window, click Calibrate.
NOTE
If the board has been previously calibrated, click Reset to erase previously stored
calibration data.
6 Touch each target as it appears on the board.
7 After the calibration, you must save the calibration data by clicking Yes from your keyboard or mouse.
NOTE
This calibration only needs to be performed once. If the Touch Board and/or projector is
moved, you must perform both calibrations again.

1 Connect the Touch Board/Touch Board Plus via USB or Wireless Kit.

Preferences
The Device Manager Preferences window differs depending on the active device.

Preferences
The Preferences tab displays options for the program language, HID/Bluetooth devices, pen smoothness and the Preferences
save location.
Language
Click the drop-down menu to change the Device Manager language. The default language is determined by the computer’s
operating system (OS).

Scan Only USB HID Devices - Device Manager will only search for Human Interface Devices (HID) when this box is
checked. Check this box if using the following devices: Pulse, Spark, Mobi, MobiView, DualBoard or Touch Board.
Scan for ResponseCard Devices - Device Manager will only search for Turning Technologies receivers when this box
is checked. Check this box if using the following devices: ResponseCard RF, RF LCD or NXT.
Enable Bluetooth Devices - Check the Enable Bluetooth Devices box to enable Bluetooth devices. If the box is
unchecked, all Bluetooth devices will be disabled.
Clear Bluetooth Devices List - Clear all available devices from the Bluetooth drop-down menu.

The drop-down menu lists all available Bluetooth devices within a radius around the Bluetooth receiver.
l

The checkbox resets after each use.
Show First Look Window at Startup - Check the Show First Look Window at Startup box to assist new users with
connecting to Device Manager.
Pen/Highlighter Preferences
Adjust the smoothness of the pen during annotation.

Select an area to determine drawing boundaries.

User Specific Preferences - If User Specific Preferences is selected, the device properties are saved for the user only.

System Wide Preferences - If System Wide Preferences is selected, the device properties are saved for all users.
Pen Buttons
From the Pen Buttons tab, the double-click interaction between the pen and DualBoard can be determined.
To select, click Lower Button or Upper Button and pair with an action from the Mouse Events drop-down menu.
Firmware Update
Click the Firmware Update tab to check if a firmware updates available for connected devices.
Choose to be notified of firmware updates by checking the Remind Me box. Additionally, set how often you would like to be
reminded of updates.
MOBI Reports
The MOBI reports tab is only visible if Flow is installed.
NOTE
This tab is only available for Mobi receivers.
If using a MobiView, the following reports can be accessed from the MOBI Reports tab:

Session Summary
If a report is not selected, it will not be viewable on the MobiView.
NOTE

Options Menu
Prior to selecting an action, click the active receiver, click Options and select an option:
TIP
The options can also be accessed by right-clicking (PC)/control-clicking (Mac) the active receiver
or clicking the desired icon from the icon menu bar.

Add a Bluetooth supported device within Device Manager, such as:

Add Gen1 IR
Click to connect a Gen1 IR receiver compatible with CPS.
Discover Devices
Click Discover Devices to discover clickers within range of the active receiver.
Lock All Pads/Unlock All Click Lock All Pads to prohibit participants from projecting MobiView annotations to the class.
Pads
Click Unlock All Pads to permit visible annotations.
Connect
Click to manually connect a receiver to a device, i.e. Mobi receiver and MobiView.
Remove
Click Remove to delete a receiver from Device Manager.
Use the Beep feature to locate a device. The following devices are supported:

Calibrate
Click Calibrate to align the DualBoard, Touch Board or Touch Board Plus. Refer to Calibrating
the DualBoard on page 15, Calibrating the Touch Board (Windows 7 and Windows 8) on
page 16 or Connecting the Touch Board via USB on page 14.
Lock
Click Lock to prohibit participants using MobiViews to send data.
Set/Unset Presenter
Click Set Presenter to designate one MobiView device as the presenter. The presenter is in control
of the session during Multi-User Mode within WorkSpace.

Description
Set/Unset Autoconnect
If Set Autoconnect is selected, Device Manager will automatically connect the device. If Unset
Autoconnect is selected, the device will not be automatically connected.
Properties
Click Properties to display information about the receiver.
Touch Settings
For Windows 7 and 8 only. Click Touch Settings to configure Windows touch settings.
Help Menu
The following options can be accessed from the Help Menu:

Click Help to display the Device Manager User Guide.
Click Logging to display the Device Manager Log.
The Start Logging icon starts the data log.
The Stop Logging icon stops the data log.
Logging
The Clear Log icon clears the data log.
Warning Select the Warning radio button to change the logging mode to log only warnings.
Info
Select the Info radio button to change the logging mode to display informational messages and
warnings.
Bug
Select the Bug radio button to change the logging mode to display debugging messages.
The Memory Monitor allows for analyzing the computer’s Java memory and for technical troubleshooting.

The About window displays the current downloaded versions of Device Manager, CPS, ExamView, Flow and
WorkSpace (if installed). You will also find the Java version, OS and version, company address and website.
Additionally, the memory usage is displayed at the bottom of the window.
When selected, the following prompt is displayed:

OK - Removes general device information such as name, manufacturer, model, serial port, firmware
version of connected and previously connected devices.
Cancel - Keeps current device preferences.

The General tab displays the basics of the device including name, firmware and channel.

Require Login (ResponseCard NXT Only) - If this box is selected, ResponseCard NXT users must

Options
Custom ID - If this box is selected, QT Devices automatically join the session with their programmed
Sticker ID. Select this option only if QT Devices will be used during the session.
ResponseCard RF/RF LCD - Selecting this box disables answer series, short answer, numeric and
essay questions. Select this option only if ResponseCard RF/RF LCDs will be used during the session.

Change the receiver channel from the Base Channel menu.

Test
From the Test tab, run a polling test to verify that the clickers and receiver are communicating.
1 Click Start Receiver.
2 Press a button on the clicker.
The clicker appears in the Device Manager Turning RF Properties window.
3 Click OK on the Device Manager Turning RF Properties window.
Log
From the Log tab, details can be accessed regarding the historical data of all devices attached to the computer.
IMPORTANT
The logging level should only be adjusted at the recommendation of Turning Technologies
Technical Support. During normal operation, the logging level should be set to Warning.

Select the Warning radio button to change the logging mode to log only warnings.

Select the Info radio button to change the logging mode to display informational messages and warnings.

The Join tab is used to change the performance of clickers joining the session.

Duplicate Answer Filter

MSecs Before Allowing Duplicate - Adjust this menu to slow down or speed up timing for duplicate button pressing.

Minimum Keypads Polled

Allow Minimum Keypads Polled - Check the Allow Minimum Keypads Polled box to adjust the number of clickers
that can join the session.
Update Keypad Language

String Table File - Click the Browse button to locate a language file. Once the file has been located, click Update to
change the language on the clickers.
Assign Student ID
Click the Assign Student ID tab to pair a clicker with a participant.
2 Instruct participants to send a response from their clickers.
Device IDs appear in the Device Manager window.
3 Double-click the Student ID field and enter a Student ID.
4 Click Send SID to Clicker.
Test
2 Turn on the clickers to be tested.
3 Enter and send the Join Code from the receiver.

The Join Code is located in brackets < > next to Start Receiver.

Configure Clickers
Click the Configure Clickers tab to pair a clicker with a participant.
1 Select a clicker type from the Set Clicker Type drop-down menu.
2 If Closed Loaner or Closed Instructor is selected, enter the appropriate information in the Closed Class Information
fields.
3 Click Setup.
4 Follow the onscreen instructions in the Feedback window.

The Instructor tab allows you to enable your instructor clicker.

2 Click the MobiView WorkSpace Annotation Tools drop-down menu and select a tool to replace the selected shortcut.
Favorites
Add and edit applications or URLs to your Favorites List from the Favorites tab.
To add an application...
1 Select a button from the Favorites window, i.e. F7.
2 Click

3 Enter a name for the application.

to locate the application path.
The application is added to your Favorites List.
To add a URL...
1 Select a button from the Favorites window, i.e. F7.

3 Enter a name for the URL.
4 Copy and paste the entire URL in the URL field.

Mapping allows you to determine which monitor is controlled by the Mobi when using an extended desktop with multiple
monitors.
