Dr. Nabil Qaddumi Chairman 2 Executive Director’s Message Every year brings new challenges and opportunities. I’m happy to report that 2013 was the year of many opportunities for growth, collaboration, and outreach. We kicked off the year with the Palestinian Labor Market Assessment to aid us in planning for future scholarships. The study connected us with prospect partners and broadened the conversations with our alumni and prospect students. It served as a compass to direct our focus by region and program. I was delighted to meet our students throughout the year and privileged to witness the exchange between our students and Dr. Nabil. We are passing knowledge and experience across generations of Palestinian men and women who together will build the economy and the community. Aided by technology we can dramatically scale up our effort to reach more students, deliver more scholarships and connect with partners and donors globally. To that end, we spent 2013 establishing partnerships that are key to broaden our support in education. We invested in technology platforms to help us scale our internal operations. We kicked off a communications strategy planning to reach out through digital and social platforms and engage students, alumni and a wider community of educators and supporters. 2013 was a year of opportunity; I’m grateful to everyone who joined us in making opportunities a reality. Architecture, Culture Identity and Globalization (2009 – 2010) Inspired by Palestine’s history, Lana Joudeh has always wanted to play a major role in her country’s future out of a deep belief in the important role of history and heritage as a foundation for development. She is now serving her country in the best way she can after earning an MA degree in architecture, cultural identity and globalization through a scholarship from Hani Qaddumi Scholarship Foundation. “I am grateful to have received a grant from a 100% purely Palestinian institution, funded by Palestinian money and operated by Palestinian employees and directors. The scholarship I received has helped me get this far in my career and my work to protect the history and identity of my beloved homeland,” she said Consequently, Lana has joined Riwaq Centre for Architectural Conservation – an organization dedicated to protecting Palestinian heritage and restoring historical buildings for various cultural, educational, and tourism activities, with the help of the local community. She is currently the senior planner for a project to revive 50 Palestinian villages where 50% of historic buildings in rural areas of the West Bank and Gaza are located. Lana says true success is “the protection of our heritage, which is part of our identity and key to protecting our history”. 5 Undergraduate Program (Palestinian Universities) A wise leader of our generation says: “Education is not only a ladder of opportunity, but it is also an investment in our future.” Nowhere is that more true than in Palestine. We cooperated with the Unite Lebanon Youth Project (ULYP) in 2012-2013 and offered Palestinian students college guidance and prepared them for the SAT exam through the BRIDGE program. 97 Palestinian students benefited from the first year of HQSF’s support through the BRIDGE program, and 49 students were accepted at various universities once they finished the program. Based on this success, we in cooperation with the ULYP, are supporting the BRIDGE program’s second round, with the goal of assisting 110 students from Lebanon’s Palestinian camps. Oxford Scholarship Supporting an exceptional scholarship Diversity is key to a healthy community and economy. To that end we are committed to young talent across varied disciplines gain the quality education they deserve to serve their community. We awarded Rawan Yaghi, a Palestinian student from Gaza an exceptional scholarship to study Modern Languages and Linguistics at the prestigious Oxford University. Rawan excelled in her studies and was accepted by Oxford for a much needed specialization in Palestine. HQSF covered 40% of Yaghi’s tuition fees for 2013-2014 at a total cost of 5,544 pounds. We offered this scholarship in response to the Senior Proctor’s statement of encouragement for scholarship schemes in Gaza. This scholarship was also made possible by the support of The Junior Members at Jesus College and the Qattan Foundation. 7 Highlights of 2013 Student to Student Initiative Encourage the spirit of volunteering To encourage our grantees to give back to their communities and play an active part in shaping Palestine’s younger generations, HQSF collaborated with the “from student to student” initiative. HQSF’s university students volunteered to tutor four school students from their area in any field of their choice. Forty-five of our grantees responded positively to the initiative, 21 were from Gaza, and 24 from the West Bank. Qattan-Qaddumi Teacher’s Graduate Program “Who dares to teach must never cease to learn.” John Cotton Dana Society flourishes through diversity and collaboration. The Qattan - Qaddumi Teachers’ Graduate Program is just that. The year 2013 marked the end of our six-year agreement with the Qattan Foundation to cooperate on the Qattan -Qaddumi Teachers’ Graduate Program. The project concluded after actively contributing to enhancing education in Palestine by sending five exceptional teachers to pursue their graduate studies abroad in educational sciences and other key fields. Having returned to Palestine, our teachers are now working towards achieving a qualitative leap in the education sector. 7 Highlights of 2013 Market Assessment Study “Research is creating new knowledge” – Neil Armstrong Determined to contribute effectively to the future of Palestine, HQSF conducted a study titled “Palestinian Market Demand Assessment in the West Bank”. The study sought to identify market needs and to work towards aligning education outcomes with them. We held a workshop in Ramallah to receive feedback on our study from government officials, private sector representatives, and academics. Participants called for a focus on enhancing students’ soft skills, paying greater attention to vocational education, broadening specialties in the engineering and economic fields, and clarifying job requirements to show students which are the best fields to major in. We have incorporated these recommendations into our study and distributed electronic copies. A copy of the study can be found on our website www.hq-sf.org In addition, we are reviewing our scholarship programs to supply Palestine’s labor market with graduates specializing in the fields with highest need. HQSF Grantees Booklet In our continuous efforts to connect with our community, we published our grantees booklet. A publication that highlights our achievement over the past 12 years showcasing our grantees over the years. You can download a complete version from our website.
