Law & Government Explorers Attend City Council Meeting
Savannah, GA - On Thursday, March 11, 2010, the Law and Government Explorer Post students attended a
City Council Meeting. Prior to the meeting, Glenda Anderson, Director of the City of Savannah Research Library
& Municipal Archives, gave the students a brief history of City Hall and the formation of the current structure
of our city government. Then, City Aldermen Edna Jackson (At-Large, Post 1, Mayor Pro Tem), Tony Thomas
(District 6), and Larry Stuber (District 3) discussed careers in public service with the Explorer Post group.
During the meeting, the students witnessed an appearance by the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee to
request a permit for the 186th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The Law and Government Explorer Post
students were also introduced to Mayor Otis Johnson during the City Council meeting.
Jawan Johnson, a junior at R.W. Groves High School said, “This was an awesome experience-- a once in a
lifetime opportunity to see how the City government works.” Macey Habersham, a junior at Sol. C. Johnson
High School commented: “I really liked being able to sit in on the City Council meeting and to see how
everything worked and went together.” Jazee Johnson, a junior at Savannah High’s School of Law & Criminal
justice, had this to say about the experience: “The thing that made a big impression on me is how much
history the City Hall building has and how it holds so much value to the City of Savannah. It’s also good to see
how all the members of the City Council can come together to make decisions for the people in Savannah that
make this city beneficial for everybody. It was great to see this beautiful city for what it really is.” Arkeem
Sheppard, a junior at Savannah High’s School of Law & Criminal justice said, “What I liked most about the City
Hall meeting was the chance to see the way the Council members and the Mayor work together to make their
decisions. I also enjoyed the presentation given by the St. Patrick’s Day Committee to receive permission to
have their Annual parade.”
Special thanks are extended to Alderman Tony Thomas and Glenda Anderson for making the arrangements for
our participation, and to attorneys Brad Harmon and Drew Wilkes, Law and Government Explorer Post
advisors, for their support of this career exploring program. Thanks also go to Gayle Tremble, SavannahChatham Public School’s Youth Apprenticeship & Work-based Learning Coordinator, for her help with the
Explorer Posts.
