VOLUME 17 Competitive Mounted Orienteering is a timed event where either individuals OR teams go on horseback, using a compass and map to find hidden objectives spread out over several miles of scenic Washington areas. 2012 ISSUE 1 National Association of Competitive Mounted Orienteering news Washington Chapter 1 From the Director Mary Gazaway Ready!...Set!...Here we go!!! Ride season is officially in full swing! We had a blast at Elbe even though the weather reports scared most people away along with the notoriously steep and slick trails this time of year. We kept it short and sweet with more "thinking" challenges than a speed race. We had 9 official first timers who got all the plates and did an outstanding job. Thank you Anne-Marie, Claudia and Sara for taking along Christine and Kelly and showing them how to bring home the blue! Nathan coached Bryianna. Amy and Curtis did it on their own, I see serious competition coming on with these two, Curtis says Amy is the competitive one...wouldn't let him look for extra plates for fun. Jala, Brinda, Andrew (Eric), and Carmen had the advantage of having some of their team attend Lisa's intro ride but had a good and successful first official trip out on their own. I really look forward to seeing all these new "victims" on future rides! It was nice to see the seasoned professionals who were brave enough to come out and play, especially the brave souls from the "down yonder" Long Hauler region and Claire on her very first long course ride with Beth and Kerry. Leona almost made it but had a scary, near disaster on the snowy highway 12. She reports that she and Robbie are fine but her truck didn't fare so well when her goose neck tried to pass her. Noella and Jeff took the blue on long course, Becky and Linda first time riding together took second, Long Haulers enjoyed the scenery coming in third and Pat and Tami had trouble with plate nine coming in fourth. Short course pros, Got Plate took the blue while coaching newcomers, Christine and Kelly. New team Jala, Brinda, Carmen and Andrew took second on their own with first timers Amy and Curtis hot on their heels in third by 5 minutes. Nathan showed Bryanna how not to find plate 4 coming in fourth place. A small group of Pierce County BCH people February 25, 2012 Noella Novarra & Buddy, Jeff Thornton & Stormy Sahara Creek Horse Camp, Elbe, WA joined in the fun donating snacks and cookies to our chili feed. Three very nice men who were there working on the trails helped Bunny and I break down and pack up to go home with the snow coming down. Thanks to Donna Amos for providing her assistance and with timing in the riders and providing the hot dogs and condiments. Donna and Jeff also brought Bunny and I a much appreciated delicious pizza and a warm fire after all day in the saddle setting up. Thanks to Bunny Roberts who went all out making making up survival packs and homemade chilli and accompaniments to warm riders up after a chilly ride. Thank you again to all who were brave enough to come out to play! Can't wait to see the rest of you at upcoming rides! Miss your faces after the long break. Scatter Creek March 10th is up next, hosted by the Hall family. Find us on FACEBOOK and weʼll soon be on the WEB with our own webpage !!!! www.wacmo.org W.A.C.M.O. Chapter 1 (Western Wash. & Oregon) news From the President Page 2 Anne-Marie Franke Hi All. It is time to Ride! Dust or scrape off the saddles, grab your horses and get ready to CMO. I am looking forward to a fun and exciting ride season. We have some new rides on our schedule this year. Our first ride of 2012 was at Elbe Hills. Thank you Mary Gazaway and Bunny Roberts for a great time. Your hard work and special touches were appreciated. It was so nice being treated to a hot meal after the ride. It was good to see so many new faces, and fun sharing their excitement of completing their first ride. I look forward to seeing you all at Scatter Creek. Anne-Marie Franke From the Vice-President Nathan Schlomer Hey everybody, it was good to see some familiar faces at the banquet. It seems like so long since I have been in the saddle or even opened my tack room. Just getting ready to load the trailer back up and go through all my camping gear and restock for the new season. As Cowboy sees me loading up the trailer I bet he is thinking, “man, is winter over already?” This season is going to be a great one, filled with a lot of new places to ride. Some may need a lot of trail maintenance due to all of our lovely weather this past winter. I am looking forward to seeing everybody at the first ride. Make sure you don’t go to Scatter Creek, I am going to have to make sure I don’t just go out of habit, and go to the wrong place. Nathan Schlomer From the Treasurer Angela Hall Hi Everyone, I hope all is well. I'm glade to see the ride season has started. We, the Hall's, hoped to be at most of the rides this year after my foot heals. Last year was not such a good year for us and in turn we missed a lot of rides. That was our first year ever missing any rides since we joined the club and we were not liking it at all.We hope everyone had a wonderful time at the first ride of the season. Thanks Mary & Bunny for putting it on we all appreciate it.Thanks to all our ride managers that put in all the time and hard work that goes into putting the rides on. Well have fun this ride season and we will see you all on the trail. Also , just a quick note on our treasury fund. Now that our banquet & awards are over and we are starting a new ride season our account is now growing again. We are starting to get new memberships coming in and that’s great, maybe some shirt orders too. Well we are off to another fun filled year. Happy Trails - Angie Hall From the Secretary Julie Osina Hello CMO'ers, Well the first ride is off and running yippee! I was excited to hear that there were so many new people at the first ride!! I was sorry I couldn't make it and see everybody but alas a new job calls for my attention. I'm sad to say I won't see any of you until April. Just a reminder that t-shirt orders are due March 15 and the Hall's are managing the next ride at ScatterCreek so you can turn that into Angela then! I will stop in and say hello to you guys at Scatter Creek so happy trails to all of you! You may notice there is a flyer for “The Great Gravel Haul”. This is sponsored by BCH and is a great volunteer opportunity for us CMO’rs to get out there and do our part for trail maintenance. It’s fun and our group gets credit for our hours simply by writing CMO next to your name on the sign up sheet! Mother Nature hasn’t been on our side this year. Mary and Bunny, on short notice, took on the huge job of finding a ride area after our traditional “first ride” site was decimated by storm damage. Sahara Creek at Elbe, Washington escaped the massive damage many of our areas experienced and our valiant ride managers set up camp on Wednesday and braved the elements to set-up and manage a great ride! As Saturday morning rolled around, snow and rain fell across Western Washington making driving conditions hazardous. Still, many NEW people and several old timers braved the elements and made it to the camp. A small group from the Pierce County BCH was on hand to work on trail maintenance and SHORT COURSE NAME Feb. 25, 2012 HORSE SATURDAY TIME PLACE Anne-Marie Franke Claudia Aide Sara Kispert Christine Wulfert Kelly Lafeur Sir Rosa Guinness Leroy ? 2:20:04 5 St. 1 Jala Newfeld Brenda Shaw Andrew Westling Carme Westling Country Moon Molly Misty Lance 2:58:05 5 St. 2 Amy Dunn Curtis Dunn Shine Jello 3:03:05 5 St. 3 February 25, 2012 Claire Sands & Nova, Kerry Noble & Sampson, Beth Burks and Rona Sahara Creek Horse Camp, Elbe, WA February 25, 2012 Jala Newfeld & Country Moon Sahara Creek Horse Camp, Elbe, WA shared snacks with our group along with Bunny’s “CMO survival packs” that we shared with them! Bunny also had awesome homemade chili, hot dogs, hot links, all the fixins’ and warm beverages for after the ride. The weather stayed cold and the snow/rain held off through out the day with just a few flakes falling at the higher elevations. Even though I couldn’t ride, I had a good time hanging out in camp and socializing with everyone and meeting all the new folks. They certainly renew the excitement of learning the game and the camaraderie that comes with competition, horses and friends, old and new! Thank you Bunny and Mary for such a wonderful day.
