ALL-TIME RESULTS
UCONN
2008 ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA HALL OF
FAME INDUCTEE:
Former University of
Connecticut women’s basketball standout Rebecca
Lobo was inducted into the College Sports
Information Directors of America (CoSIDA)
Academic All-America Hall of Fame on Monday,
June 30.
Lobo becomes the second former UConn student-athlete to earn this honor as former women’s
basketball standout Leigh Curl, who played from
1981-85, was inducted in 1998.
A two-time All-America selection and a WNBA
all-star, Lobo revolutionized the way that the public views women’s basketball during her career at
UConn. On the court, Lobo guided the Huskies to
a perfect 35-0 mark during her senior campaign, a
year that was capped with the 1995 NCAA national championship, and as one of the first players in
WNBA history she helped guide the New York
Liberty to the 1997 league title game.
A Rhodes Scholar candidate, Lobo was the 1995
Academic All-America of the Year in women’s basketball and the Co-Academic All-America of the
Year for all teams in the University Division. A
two-time pick as the BIG EAST Conference
Women’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year,
Lobo was named as the NCAA Woman of the
Year in 1995 while also receiving the NCAA’s
“Today’s Top Eight Award”. She is the only player in BIG EAST history to earn both Player of the
Year and Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors.
Lobo earned her degree in liberal arts and sciences from UConn, posting a 3.638 cumulative
grade point average along the way, and she helped
the United States capture the Olympic gold medal
at the 1996 Games in Atlanta. After a very successful seven-year career in the WNBA, Lobo now
serves as an analyst with ESPN. She is also a member of the UConn Board of Trustees and was the
graduation speaker for UConn's College of Liberal
Arts and Sciences in 2008.
Lobo has been actively involved in the community, founding The RuthAnn and Rebecca Lobo
Scholarship in Allied Health at UConn while serving as a spokesperson for Hispanic Scholarship
Fun, Teach for America and “Save Lids To Save
Lives”, which is a breast cancer fundraising campaign.
Other members of the Class of 2008 are: Dr.
Kenneth Caldwell (The Citadel, Class of 1979),
Nancy Hogshead-Makar (Duke University, Class
of 1986), Karen Jennings (University of Nebraska,
Class of 1993), Amy Privette Perko (Wake Forest
University, Class of 1987), the first female
Academic All-America in school history and current Executive Director of the Knight Foundation
Commission.
Dr. Leigh Curl '85
1998 ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA HALL OF
FAME INDUCTEE:
Dr. Leigh Curl was
inducted into the GTE/CoSIDA Academic AllAmerica Hall of Fame on June 10, 1998.
Curl, a two-time Academic All-America choice,
was a basketball standout at the University of
Connecticut (1981-1985). Curl, who scored 1,388
points in her career, was only the third woman in
Connecticut history to score 1,000 points and is
currently No. 18 at UConn in career points.
The four-year starter and two-year captain
Leigh Curl is presented with an award

the Academic Hall of Fame.
Curl was also the 1985 BIG EAST ScholarAthlete and the UConn Women’s Basketball
Scholar-Athlete.
One professor at Connecticut saw her potential and thought she was bound for bigger and
better things - Dr. Ted Taigen. Curl did her
honors thesis in Taigen’s lab and there he
noticed her talent and aptitude in biology.
Taigen talked her into applying to medical
school.
Curl was accepted into Johns Hopkins School
of Medicine where she got her degree while volunteering as a team physician for USA
Basketball and the New York City public
schools recreation program.
Currently the head team physician for the
2001 NFL Super Bowl Champions Baltimore
Ravens, Curl is only the sixth woman ever to be
inducted into the Hall of Fame. The other 1998
inductees were: Bernie Kosar (Miami), Jack
Mildren (Oklahoma), Jack Sikma (Illinois
Wesleyan) and Marv Levy (Coe College).

the Year and Scholar Athlete of the Year in the same season (1995).

HISTORY
The Connecticut women’s basketball program has played
"Connecticut women's basketball
before over 2.5 million fans at home during the past 14 years, by
is unique. The Huskies have a bond
far one of the highest totals nationally. The Huskies have held between the entire state allowing
one of the top-3 spots in average attendance nationally spots for us to sell out game after game like
the last 14 years and are the ONLY women's basketball team to no other team can. We definitely
consistently boast sellout crowds (10,167 in Gampel Pavilion and have the best fans of any team in
the country. The numbers don't lie.
16,294 in the XL Center).
With numerous sellouts throughout every home season, UConn's Our fans are special to us and we
love playing to a full house."
attendance numbers should remain consistent for years to come.
Since the 1993-94 season, UConn has played before 2,840,892
fans in 278 home games (194 in the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion
and 84 in the Hartford Civic Center).
UConn has led the nation in average attendance during three seasons and has led the nation in games
played before the highest percentage of capacity in every season since 1995.
