Recreation
Appalachian Trail
The Appalachian National Scenic Trail is the longest continual footpath in
the world, crossing ridge tops of the Appalachian Mountain range through
14 states. The AT is marked for travel in both directions with white
blazes on trees, posts and rocks.
Unicoi County has been named a Gateway Community to the Appalachian
Trail by The Appalachian Trail Conservancy. Over 50 of the most scenic
miles along the trail are located here in Unicoi County. There are six
trailheads that offer parking for your next hike.
• Chestoa Trailhead – From southern Erwin, go south on Temple Hill Rd.
for .3 mile past the Mountain Inn & Suites and turn left on River Rd.
The AT crosses the Nolichucky River over the bridge at the first stop
sign. Hiking south towards Spivey Gap is about 11 miles of climbing
trail featuring beautiful views overlooking the Nolichucky River.
• Devil’s Fork Trailhead – From the I-26 Temple Hill Exit, go south on
Old Asheville Highway. Turn right onto TN-352 (Devil’s Fork Rd.) and
the parking area is on the left at the TN/NC state line.
• Indian Grave Gap Trailhead – This trailhead and parking area is
located on TN-395 (Rock Creek Rd.) on the TN side of the TN/NC state
line. Hiking south toward Chestoa is about 8 miles that starts out high
in the mountains and ends near Erwin at the Nolichucky River.
• Iron Mountain Gap Trailhead – The northernmost AT trailhead is
located on TN-107 at the TN/NC state line. Hiking south towards
Indian Grave Gap is 11 miles of high mountain trail over 3,500 feet
elevation featuring Beauty Spot, a bald mountaintop with nearly 360
degree views.
Nolichucky River
Whether you prefer rafting or reeling – or both – the waters
of Unicoi County are waiting for you. The Nolichucky River’s
churning white waters wind through the deepest gorge in the
eastern United States. Steep slopes and cliffs rise more than 2,000
feet from the magnificent river, offering exhilarating whitewater rafting
amongst breathtaking scenery. The Nolichucky River is a world-class
smallmouth bass river with fish often exceeding 4 pounds. Trout, musky,
crappie and catfish round out the diverse fishing opportunities available
on the Nolichucky.

• Sams Gap Trailhead – This trailhead parking area is located south of
Flag Pond on the Old Asheville Hwy. just across the TN/NC state line.
The AT intersects the Old Asheville Hwy. at Sams Gap where the road
goes under I-26. Hiking south towards Devil’s Fork is about 8 miles
of mountain trail over 3,000’ elevations.
• Spivey Gap Trailhead – This trailhead parking area is on US19W in
NC, within a couple miles of the TN/NC state line. From TN, drive .3
mile past the Spivey Gap Recreation Area sign to the pullout on the
right. Hiking south towards Sams Gap is about 13.5 miles of trail
that includes high rock overlooks and the 5,516-foot high Big Bald
Mountain.

Bogart-Bowman Log Cabin & Buffalo Creek Park
5012 Unicoi Drive, Unicoi, TN
This historic two-story log cabin, originally built around 1790, features a detached
kitchen and dogtrot. Buffalo Creek Park features a quarter-mile walking path.

Chestoa Recreation Area

The Chestoa Recreation Area, located along the banks of the Nolichucky River, has
picnic tables, grills, changing rooms and restrooms. There are two short foot trails
and a sandy area for wading along the river.
Erwin Fishery Park
501 Fishery Park Road, Erwin, TN
The park, surrounded by the stunning scenery of the Unaka Mountains, features
hiking trails, a pond and restored wetland, basketball and tennis courts, covered
pavilions, picnic tables, playground facilities, swimming pool and the most recent
extension of Erwin’s award-winning Linear Trail.
Erwin Linear Trail
South Industrial Drive, Erwin, TN
The Erwin Linear Trail runs parallel to I-26 along North Indian Creek and the
Nolichucky River waterways in Erwin. The paved trails meander through,
around and over woodlands, natural ponds and wetlands to create spectacular
opportunities for recreation and fishing.
Gathering Place Park

The Gathering Place Park contains umbrella-covered tables and chairs and
features a large stage. The park is perfect for a small picnic lunch or communitywide event.

Limestone Cove Park and Campground, located along Indian Creek, features 18
campsites with tent pads, lantern posts, picnic tables and grills.
Pinnacle Mountain Fire Tower & Trailhead
Unicoi, TN
The Pinnacle Mountain Fire Tower is located atop Buffalo Mountain at 3,520 feet
above sea level and has served as a sentinel for the area’s forest lands for the
past 75 years.
Rock Creek Park
2001 Rock Creek Rd., Erwin
Towering trees and rhododendrons create a magnificent setting for outdoor
recreation alongside Rock Creek. The Park offers both day use and extended stay
opportunities for visitors and contains short hiking trails, scattered picnic tables, a
natural swimming pool, a bike trail, an amphitheater and campground.
Veterans Memorial Park

The Veterans Memorial Park features a covered pavilion with picnic tables perfect
for family gatherings. The park also displays monuments honoring Unicoi County’s
soldiers.

The Unicoi County Heritage Museum, located adjacent to the Erwin National Fish
Hatchery is housed in the historic farmhouse residence of the first Fish Hatchery’s
superintendent. It features several themed rooms including a Blue Ridge Pottery
Room, Wildlife Room, Clinchfield Railroad Room, Daughters of the American
Revolution Room and a History Room.

The Unicoi County Public Library is housed in the Col. JF Toney Memorial Building.
The original structure was built in 1924 as a passenger depot for the Clinchfield
Railroad. Today, visitors can access computers, the latest novels, and local history,
within the historic structure that is situated alongside an active CSX train yard.

Modeled to look like an old-fashioned train depot, the Clinchfield Railroad Museum
pays homage to the Town of Erwin’s rich railroad history. The museum features a
stage at the front of the building which may be used for performances and other
functions. Inside, guests enter the lobby and then proceed into the large display
room, which is filled with railroad collection memorabilia. This display room also
functions as a conference area and educational room featuring PowerPoint and
video abilities.

Erwin. At that time, ten local crafters and farmers set up tents for the
day to sell their wares and crops. To give the event entertainment flair,
the group invited Old Joe Clark, a native of Unicoi County that often
performed at the Grand Ole’ Opry. For the next two years, the event was
known as Old Joe Clark Days.
In 1980, the number of vendors had grown and the event had taken on
a new look, as well as a new name. Since that time, the Apple Festival
has continued to grow and expand into an award-winning, nationallyrecognized event drawing visitors from all across the country.
The Unicoi County Apple Festival is a time of homecoming and tradition.
The festival is a place where memories are made and history is retold. It
offers a time for old friends and acquaintances to meet and reminisce on
Main Street. The weekend unites thousands of people and brings them
home to Unicoi County. Whether spending the day, the weekend or the
week, you will find entertainment, outdoor adventure and warm southern
hospitality in Erwin, especially during the Unicoi County Apple Festival!
