A new Shavuot program for all ages
(includes participation of our Confirmation students)
Tuesday, May 14th at 6:15 to 7:45pm
Join us for a new Shavuot program at Temple Sholom. Everyone from the youngest
babies to the oldest seniors will all be studying and inspired by the same line of Torah,
about bringing the first fruits to the Temple.
There will be music, art and
age appropriate text study,
as well as a short service.
Dinner is part of the program:

sundae bar, as well as cheesecake
(a Shavuot tradition).

Dear Congregants,
For the past while the Union for Reform Judaism
[URJ] has been a big part of my life and that of the
Temple. Not being in the centre of Jewish life in
North America their support is very welcome. In
December 2011, myself, the Executive Director, the
immediate Past President with six other Temple
Members attended the URJ Biennial in
Washington, DC. There we schmoozed, studied and
prayed with over 6,000 Reform Jews. We attended
the largest Shabbat dinner ever! In April 2012 I
attended the URJ Scheidt Seminar for new Temple
Presidents in Atlanta, GA with 90 other new Reform
Temple Presidents. I get a daily email involving
questions given and answers provided by the URJ
Temple Presidents’ listserv.
The URJ encouraged and helped Temple establish
itself almost 50 years ago. In our recent search for a
new Senior Rabbi we received assistance and
guidance from the URJ and conducted our search
through the Central Conference of American Rabbis
[CCAR]. Rabbi Carey Brown recently attended the
recent CCAR Convention and caught up with Rabbi
Dan Moskovitz, our new Senior Rabbi. The URJ
provided Temple with guidance in creating
Temple’s Strategic Plan and best practices in
transitioning to the new Senior Rabbi.
Our Temple bylaws provide that we will maintain
affiliation with the URJ and we must abide, in our
selection of a Rabbi, by the rules and regulations of
the Rabbinical Placement Commission of the URJ,
the CCAR and the Hebrew Union College (HUC).
So I wanted to take this opportunity to provide some
background on what the URJ is and our connection
thereto.
The Union for Reform Judaism formerly known as
the Union of American Hebrew Congregations
(UAHC) is the organization that supports Reform
Jewish congregations in North America. The
current President is Rabbi Rick Jacobs.
The origins of the URJ began with the founding in
1873 of the UAHC in Cincinnati, Ohio. At the time it
consisted of 34 congregations. In 1951, the UAHC
relocated its headquarters to New York City. In
2003, the UAHC was officially renamed the Union
for Reform Judaism to acknowledge the
Reform-affiliated congregations such as our Temple
outside the United States. Today over 900
synagogues in North America are affiliated with the
URJ making it the largest denomination of Jewish
life in North America.
As a member of the World Union for Progressive
Judaism, the URJ connects Reform Jews in North
America
with
Liberal/Progressive/Reform
congregations around the world.
The Religious Action Center (RAC), in conjunction
with CCAR, performs the political and legislative
outreach of the URJ. The RAC advocates policy
positions based upon religious values. Israeli
Reform Rabbi Miri Gold who recently visited
Temple as a guest speaker serves as Rabbi of Keilat
Birkat Shalom, a regional Reform synagogue based
at Kibbutz Gezer. Under a ruling by the Israel
Attorney General, May 2012, Rabbi Gold will be the
first non-Orthodox Rabbi to be paid by the State of
Israel. This success comes after a six-year fight by
the RAC in the Israeli Supreme Court. Rabbi Gold
upon hearing the ruling said: "This is a big step for
religious pluralism and democracy in Israel. Israeli
Jews want religious alternatives and with this decision the State is starting to recognize this reality.
There is more than one way to be Jewish, even in
Israel." ARZA is the prime funder of the RAC.
A Message from Our President
Through programs, information and networking
opportunities provided by the URJ, member
congregations enhance their capacity to build and
expand community, deepen Jewish learning,
energize worship, pursue social justice and develop
inspired leadership.
The URJ is reorganizing to better serve and meet
the challenges of the Reform Movement. Change is
very fitting for a group that calls itself a Movement.
The URJ is transitioning from a system whereby
synagogues get support solely from the URJ to a
networked relationship whereby synagogues will get
support from the URJ and other Reform
synagogues. The reorganization focuses on four
ways for URJ leaders to be better partners with URJ
congregations.

The Congregational Network whereby

issues and draw strength from each other
supplemented by URJ leaders.
2.
The Faculty Network whereby the URJ has
networked with 35 great Jewish thinkers to assist
congregations. They will be accessible through
monthly webinars. The faculty will write regular
articles for online discussions.
3.
The Community of Practice whereby the
URJ staff teams help congregations devote their
energies in a given area of synagogue life. The
leadership of one synagogue will connect with other
synagogues that have similar concerns to advance
their current strategies. Some synagogues will
actively participate and other synagogues may
choose to observe what the cohorts are doing.
4.
The Knowledge Network whereby the broad
expertise in the Reform community from
congregations, to clergy to thought leaders in a
number of key fields that apply to Jewish Life will be
available.
So that our congregation can maintain relationships
across Canada and also be in community with those
congregations geographically closest to us, I will
receive invitations to participate in presidents’
meetings and to attend gatherings in both the West
District community that includes Washington,
Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Alaska (our home
community) and the community that includes the
eastern Canada and greater Toronto area
synagogues. In putting Temple Sholom in this group
the URJ took many things into consideration
including our congregations’ proximity to the
others, the culture and existing practice in a given
area and the geographic divisions of URJ affiliates.
Wherever possible, congregations were grouped so
that there is alignment with our Camp, NFTY, WRJ,
MRJ, CCAR, and ARZA regions. Every effort was
made to group congregations in a way that would
allow the Community to gather in person at least
once a year.
These changes have already helped me as your
President and various committees receive useful
ideas to enrich our Temple.

Beit Halochem
We are again honoured and privileged to be
hosting injured Israel Defense Forces (IDF) vets
from “Beit Halochem”. The 8 IDF vets will be
arriving into Vancouver on Wednesday, May 22
and will be staying until Wednesday, May 29.
During their time here, they will be hosted by
families from the congregation and will be
treated to a wonderful itinerary of activities.
If you would like to meet the vets,
they will be here at shul on Friday night,
May 24.

FYI - Rabbi & Cathy Bregman have just
announced that this year they will be
participating in the annual Beit Halochem
“Courage in Motion Bike Ride” in Israel
from October 20-24. Every day for 5 days,
hundreds of participants from all over the world
will join with IDF vets from Beit Halochem in
this fundraising bike ride that will cover approximately 50-70 km per day. If Rabbi Bregman
isn’t in shul during the next few months - don’t
worry, he’s in training. Stay tuned for more

Yom Ha’atsmaut
For Yom Ha’atsmaut, we all went on a trip to
Israel. The youngest children had a mini-trip in
their classrooms and the older ones used the
whole school. They took their passports and
visited Masada for bootcamp; the Galil for
dancing; Jerusalem for art; and Tel Aviv for
falafel making. Many
of them also took the
time to write moving
letters to Israeli soldiers. These will be
forwarded to young
men and women who
are serving in the
Israeli army.
Walk for Israel
On April 28, the school
participated in the
Walk for Israel. After a
rousing song session
and the making of flags, we walked en masse to
the Jewish Community Centre. It was a
moment of shared excitement especially
because Cathy and Rabbi Bregman were being
especially honoured. A proud moment.
Tuesday Classes
The Tuesday classes have been participating in
a Hebrew Ulpan. This was a chance for them to
learn more about the living language, rather
than the prayerbook Hebrew we usually concentrate on. By the end of the session, they
were able to order food and ask questions in an
“Israeli” restaurant. They successfully ordered
pizza, salad and lemonade as well as greeting
each other and the servers. Food is always a
great motivator. In the next month, they will
learn about Torah; the words of Torah; the
physical Torah; and what it means to carry
Torah with you.

Tikkun Olam – Repairing the World
In the period between Passover and Shavuot,
we count the Omer. Because this is a holiday
celebrating grain harvests, we have a wonderful
tradition at Temple Sholom.
We bring
donations of cereal products, not just once but
each time we come to the synagogue. Our
students have participated actively in this
Tikkun Olam project filling the foodbank basket
with breakfast cerea, fruit bars and other
healthy cereal products.

ARZA Canada Report
I had the opportunity to be part of a conference
call in mid-April with URJ Rabbi Rick Jacobs,
IMPJ Rabbi Gilad Kariv, and IRAC director Anat
Hoffman, to discuss Natan Sharansky’s new
proposal for how Jews of different theological
backgrounds can share the Kotel.
The conversation was recorded and is available

Of particular note (in addition to many other
points, some of which are outlined below),
I found it interesting that Anat explained that the
issue of religious pluralism in Israel used to be
mainly an issue for Jews outside of Israel. But
now, it has become an issue for Israelis, with
daily articles appearing in mainstream Israeli
media. Israelis are standing up for their right to
conduct their lives and celebrate life events
without being dictated to by the Orthodox
rabbinate. ARZA is proud of the role we have
played in bringing this issue to the forefront of
Israeli society.
The following is an amalgamation of the
myriad recent articles about the monumental
events taking place in Israel:“It has been a good
week for the Jewish people.” That is a quote from
Rabbi Rick Jacobs, President of URJ. He was
referring to recent events that have significantly
furthered the cause of religious pluralism in
Israel.
CEO of the Jewish Agency for Israel, Natan
Sharansky has submitted a report entitled "One
Wall for the Jewish People”. He is proposing
a compromise solution that will significantly
strengthen the right of non-orthodox Jews at the
Kotel. There are still many details to work out but
as Anat Hoffman said, "It is more than we
expected."
The current set-up for women who want to pray
according to an egalitarian philosophy is to go to

a section of the wall called Robinson’s Arch,
which is removed from the main Kotel Plaza.
Unlike the Western Wall, which is open 24 hours
a day, seven days a week, Robinson’s Arch cannot
always be accessed since worshippers must share
it with an archaeological site. They must also pay
an admission fee, which is not the case for the
main Kotel Plaza.
Thanks to the sagacious intervention of
Sharansky and the backing of Prime Minister
Netanyahu, a seemingly intractable clash of
opposing values might be nearing resolution.
Sharansky is calling for the expansion of the
Western Wall Plaza to encompass Robinson’s
Arch. In addition, Robinson’s Arch, presently
lower than the level of the Western Wall Plaza,
would be raised to the same height. NonOrthodox services could be held there without
harassment. And, hopefully, access will be free of
charge and around-the-clock. It seems to be a
brilliant solution, which appears to have the
tentative backing of conservative, reform, and
many orthodox factions.
Western Wall Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz said that
while the new prayer area “does not match” his
worldview, he supports the idea of “one site of
prayer” and said that the ultra-Orthodox
community “can live with this solution.”
Mayer Fertig, the spokesman for the Orthodox
Union, one of America’s largest Orthodox
communal organizations, wrote that he wanted
to “express profound gratitude” to Sharansky for
his efforts “in trying to tone down animosity
between Jew and Jew. He has gone out of his way
to hear, understand and be sensitive to all
concerned parties.”
URJ Rabbi Jacobs said that he was
“encouraged” by Sharansky’s efforts and that
“while his proposals are not all we had hoped for,
they represent a dramatic step towards a State of
Israel that respects and protects the rights of
non-Orthodox Jews. There are many crucial
details to be worked out, but in general I am
hopeful that we are moving towards a

An additional positive note: at the Kotel last
month, five Women of the Wall were arrested but
the judge released them saying they did nothing
wrong. President Peres took a public stand and
urged the Chief Rabbi of the Western Wall to
moderate
his
actions
regarding
the
handling of the Wall and attempts by women to
pray there.
