COLLECTION OF BOOKS BY PETR NIKL
Petr Nikl (*1960) was born in Zlín in the family of an
academic painter and a toy designer. He studied at the
secondary school of decorative arts in Uherské Hradiště
and the Prague Academy of Fine Arts (studios of
professors Arnošt Paderlík and Jiří Ptáček). He found
inspiration to his first texts at Christian Morgenstern and
accompanied them with mezzotints. He creates layouts,
invents nonsense stories and songs. With friends
interested in theatre performances he starts the puppet
society MEHEDAHA in 1987. The puppet shows, based on
ballet, musical and dramatic sketches and small
absurdities, are shown privately or at exhibition openings.
Together with František Petrák he has published a series of
thirteen books of nonsense poetry by MEHEDAHA. In
1987 he is at the birth of the art society The Hard-headed.
He was awarded the Prize of Jindřich Chalupecký (1995).
He is a multiartist: he paints, makes puppets, composes
and plays, writes and sings. He is the author of the
concept of interactive exhibitions Game nests (Rudolfinum
2000), The Landscape of Fantasy and Music (Czech
pavillion at EXPO 2005 in Aichi, Japan), Orbis Pictus and
Labyrinth of the World, which travel all over the world. He
prepared many interesting projects for the Archa theatre.
For Meander he created the Blue Elephant series logo.

LINGUISTIC TALES
Linguistic Tales is a complex work of art, created by an original author and
artist in one person. It is a toy book, like magic binoculars, that offers a
different picture at each new opening. It is a book challenge, inviting the
adult to follow the child to an exciting trip to the dream world of Linguisia,
where incredible things happen...

LITTLE FOOL SCAP
Yet another original artist’s book by multimedia artist Petr Nikl, containing some
hundred-and-sixty poetic compositions prone to playfulness and discovery.
Even though the style of the author’s more recent works remains alike, on the
whole it is still fresh, inspirational and attractive. The multifaceted variableness
of his verse, sometimes stumbling and technically failing to deliver only to
employ miraculous condensation revealing mighty storyline bunches a little
later, goes hand in hand with his remarkable illustrations. Nikl has created his
own fantasy world and every new book only confirms that it must either be
accepted or remain misunderstood. Reception on the part of children, however,
is certainly not automatic.
