TREE scapes December 2014 From Dan’s Desk Turning Over a New Leaf Youth grow trees—and themselves Meet Junior and Orlando, young men who have become beloved and hard-working members of our team since they joined us this summer. They came to us through the San Francisco Wraparound Project, a program based at San Francisco General Hospital that helps young survivors of violence to change their lives. For the last 18 months, Friends of the Urban Forest has been employing youth from the program, two at a time, as arborist apprentices. Factoid: Trees help us manage stormwater Each year, San Francisco’s trees collectively capture an estimated 516,468,000 gallons of water that would otherwise flow into the city’s combined storm-sewer system. Read our reviews and add your story at http://bit.ly/greatnonprofit-fuf. “I had seen a lot of FUF trees in San Francisco and I always wondered how they got there,” Junior said recently, “so I was excited to show up for my first day and find out.” Junior and Orlando work with us five days a week, planting and caring for trees and installing sidewalk gardens. Together, they have already pruned 227 trees. Additionally, both have been invaluable mentors to other FUF youth. Like many great things in life, our partnership with the Wraparound Project originated with a coincidence: David Grunwald, a resident at SFGH, is a next-door neighbor of our longtime volunteer Frank Fredericks, and realized that FUF would be a great organization for the kind of work-readiness apprenticeship that’s helpful to youth who finish the program. It has been tremendously fulfilling to watch Junior and Orlando become part of the community of San Franciscans who care deeply about the urban forest. “There is a tree across the street from where I live,” Orlando said, “and I want to knock on the door and say ‘Can I prune that tree for you?’” Warmly, “I want to knock on the door and say ‘Can I prune that tree for you?” Executive Director ADOPT-A-PLANTING ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Friends of the Urban Forest thanks these participants in our “Adopt-A-Planting” program: www.fuf.net 415-561-6890 Brisbane Box Level Tree Planet, for adopting the November 8 tree planting in the Mission neighborhood treepla.net Ginkgo Level Renee M. But when neglected, they can be eyesores. If you have a street tree in front of your home or business, here’s how to ensure that its basin is more like a park: • Regularly clear out trash and debris. • Mulch the basin to reduce the growth of weeds and retain moisture for your tree (but avoid piling mulch against the base of the tree, which can cause rot). • If you’re tempted to plant other greenery in the basin, choose small succulents. Other kinds of greenery can harm your tree by competing with it for water and nutrients. • Place a sign in the basin asking dog owners to steer their dogs away from the basins (dog urine can burn the tree), or at least to clean up after them. • You can deter some (smaller) dogs by installing edging around your tree basin, but it must meet certain requirements; see www.fuf.net/basins for details.
