ART WALK
D O W N TO W N M I A M I

We begin in the plaza of the Miami Dade Cultural Center
Plaza of Miami Dade Cultural Center
“Cheval Majeur”
by Raymond Duchamp-Villon
Duchamp-Villon is highly regarded as one of the most
important Cubist sculptors. Cheval Majeur is his most
celebrated work and has been referred to as the most powerful
piece by any strictly Cubist artist.
The Miami DDA has partnered with Miami Dade Art in Public Places to
bring you the first in a series of Downtown Miami “Art Walking Tour”.
Miami Dade Art in Public places has commissioned over fifty-five artworks
since 1973 including renowned international as well as Miami-based
artists. We are proud to bring you a curated walking tour of twelve select
pieces of the collection.
Miami DDA would like to thank Brandi Reddick (Miami Art in Public Places)
for expertly curating these tours. We would also like to thank Brandi and
Thomas Collins (Miami Art Museum) for lending their incredible expertise
and voice to the downloadable Audio files that guide you on this tour and
accompany each artwork.
Miami Main Public Library (entrance from Cultural Plaza), Entrance Rotunda
“Words without thought never to Heaven go”
by Edward Ruscha
California artist Edward Ruscha is best known for his exploration
of the meaning and power of words. In this commission Ruscha
took a quote from Shakespeare’s “Hamlet”, floated each word on
a sky-like ground, and installed the mural in a continuous frieze.
In a second phase, Ruscha designed sixty related lunettes for
placement throughout the library.
These audio files can be found at www.dwntwnarts.com
THE TOUR
You may want to estimate that the tour will take around 90 minutes –
depending on how much time you decide to spend with each art piece.
Take this tour at your leisure, view the works of art and explore downtown.
The Art Walk will lead you inside the Main Public Library, so we
recommend that you take the tour during its opening hours:
• Monday-Saturday 9am-6pm
• Sunday 1pm-5pm
The tour makes use of the MetroMover, a free public transportation system
throughout Downtown. You may view/print it from www.miamidade.gov/
transit/metromover-stations.asp.

by David von Schlegell
In this piece, von Schlegell makes use of his lifelong interest in
yacht and airplane design, referencing the external skin of an
airplane with sheets of shiny aluminum joined with visible rivets.
“The X”
by Ronald Bladen
Ronald Bladen’s Minimalist construction, The X, stands almost
twenty-three feet tall. Due to its large scale, the form demands
the viewer experience its powerful presence and consider its
heroic proportions.

“Double City Boots”
by Kenneth Snelson
Precisely balanced stainless steel cables and tubing form a
delicate and airy structure in Snelson’s Double City Boots.
Snelson’s art investigates structures, ranging from his
trademark gigantic discontinuous compression sculptures to
models of the atom.
“Dos Grandes”
“Manhatten Schist - Portrait of a Rock”
by Robert Lawrence Lobe
Lobe interprets and manipulates nature as the source of
inspiration for Manhattan Schist-Portrait of a Rock. To create
the piece, sheets of aluminum were hammered over the
surface of rocks, producing a sculpture which transforms a
seemingly solid mass into an organic, weightless structure.
“Zamir”
40
by Richard van Buren
Elegant and sparse, Richard Van Buren’s Zamir is a study in weight
and balance and an example of American Minimalist sculpture.
The artist incorporated vertical upswing in the core of the
sculpture, which appears to push the limits of balance and create
visual tension.
41
www.dwntwnarts.com
by Bill Barrett
Vertically oriented and situated on three points, Dos Grandes is
an elegant, curvilinear sculpture with elements that intersect
and undulate in space. Barrett balances visual tension with
organic form, producing a work that is both abstracted and
animated.

JUSTIN H. LONG
“Einstein On The Beach” (Metropolitan Interlude)
September 7, 2012 - January 12, 2013
Justin H. Long appropriates the title
of “Einstein on the Beach” from
20th century composer Philip Glass.
Glass’s 1975 same titled opera was a
collaboration with theatrical producer
Robert Wilson, where the musical
score was inspired by Wilson’s Story
board panels. The opera received
attention for its groundbreaking
direction eschewing traditional
opera narrative in favor of formalist
approaches to structured space.
Justin aims to replicates this technique
by using two-dimensional materials
to occupy a three-dimensional space.
Equipped with a back and forth banter
between characters, passerbyes
are jostled out of their focused state
of mind. They deviate towards the
window display as they are brought
into the conversation of an atypical
beach-going experience, creating a
metropolitan interlude.

BAYFRONT PARK
Redesigned in the early 1980s by Isamu Noguchi, Bayfront Park is a 32-acre site located in
the epicenter of downtown Miami on Biscayne Bay. Bayfront Park contains three significant
Noguchi sculptures the Slide Mantra, the Challenger Memorial and the Light Tower. It also
includes a sculpture of Miami’s founder Julia Tuttle designed by California-based Daub &
Firmin Sculpture Studios.
THE LIGHT TOWER
CLAUDE PEPPER
By Zonn Lot
Bayfront Park was redesigned in the early 1980s
by Isamu Noguchi. Isamu Noguchi is recognized
as the 20th century’s foremost American sculptor
and his innovative parks, plazas, playgrounds,
fountains, gardens, and public pieces are located
in many different countries and celebrated
around the world.
by Isamu Noguchi
The Light Tower is representative of Noguchi’s
earlier work with monumental shapes and their
interaction with light. The forty foot, aubergine
tower makes references to Japanese lanterns
and the full moon over Miami.

SLIDE MANTRA
by Isamu Noguchi
The 9 ft. tall, bronze statue, by the Italian artist
Count Vittorio Di Colbertado, was commissioned
by the Miami Citizens Committee and unveiled on
October 12, 1953.
The Slide Mantra is a 10 foot high, white carrara
marble slide weighing 29 tons. This slide
demonstrates Noguchi’s long held belief that play
could lead to a new appreciation of sculpture.
JULIA TUTTLE
By Eugene Daub and Rob Firmin
by Isamu Noguchi
The Challenger Memorial is a white, metal pipe
tower that rises approximately 100 feet out of
the park’s southwest corner. The sculpture
is dedicated to the memory of the Challenger
astronauts and makes allusions to the double
helix DNA molecule and the twisting contrails of
NASA’s doomed spacecraft.
48
The sculpture depicts Julia Tuttle, mother
of Miami symbolically offering fresh orange
blossoms to Henry Flagler to prove that the
local crop did not freeze. Julia Tuttle and her
orange blossoms have become a symbol of both
her persistence and her vision for the future
greatness of the City of Miami. The bas relief on
Tuttle’s skirt tells the story of the city’s founding.

heart (as in “heart of palm”), echoing the palm
image on the 8th Street side of the station.
“Ventana Solar” (solar window) represents a
Cuban colonial window to the area.

“Moving Over” Artist: Buster Simpson
Buster Simpson created sculptural seating for
three stations on the Omni leg of metromover. His
platform benches have been crafted as a remnant
from the street below. The artist incorporated
hurricane andrew debris inlaid into the terrazzo
with gestures of mangrove roots - symbolizing a
rebirth, and expressing the exuberance of Miami’s
culture.

Connie Lloveras’s ceramic mosaic within the
Brickell Station’s coffered ceiling is designed
to produce a patchwork quilt effect. People
representing Miami’s multicultural community
imprinted their handprints directly into the raw
clay tile. “Reaching for Miami Skies” is intended
to evoke a feeling of unity in viewers. It implies
“the sky is the limit,” and that there is no end to
what can be achieved with peace and solidarity
among people in Miami.
