Everybody Loves a Street Fair! What makes a street fair so much fun? Is it the food trucks and offerings from local restaurants, specialty food stores, and local craft beer breweries? Is it the “Kids Zone” sponsored by North Shore Medical Center and featuring Barry University’s Athletic Village, art and science games, rock climbing, bounce houses, and rides? Is it the rockin’ live music stage sponsored by Unite Miami Shores? Or it the bountiful farmer’s market presented by the Urban Oasis Project? Maybe it’s the garden and landscape design vendors or the green living and home improvement solutions? Could it be the Electric Avenue showcasing the latest in hybrid and energy efficient vehicles from scooters to smart cars? Or maybe the artisan village brimming with hand crafted art, fair-trade items, custom jewelry, beauty products, and clothing? Or maybe its Miami Shores Presbyterian Church School’s pop-up bookstore? Maybe it’s the thrill of learning from the environmental groups and garden nurseries who will be offering education on composting and rain barrels and advice to kick off South Florida’s growing season? There is something incredibly liberating and special about walking down the middle of a street usually filled with car traffic without fear of ending up on the bad end of a game of Frogger. Add food, beverages, music, games, shopping, and hanging out with your friends—now you have a party! Thanks to the “green” financial support of North Shore Medical Center, Unite Miami Shores, Village of Miami Shores, and our zone sponsors, the Chamber expects this year’s event to be epic! Each year the Greater Miami Shores Chamber of Commerce stages Green Day, which brings together all of the things that our community residents like best: a kid and pet friendly environment, live music, food trucks, beer and wine, and a chance to stroll the Avenue without cars and see neighbors and friends. And the “green” theme also resonates with our community. Miami Shores and its neighboring communities have among the highest levels of recycling participation, Florida Friendly landscaping, and a true commitment to green issues in South Florida. Our neighbors take this stuff seriously, and that’s a big reason why the event draws nearly 5,000 people in just four hours. This year’s event promises lots of kid activities and surprises as well, from the return of the Walking Trees to the video screens showing live, random acts of resident’s goofiness! GREATER MIAMI SHORES CHAMBER OF COMMERCE GREENER LIVING C MMITTEE miamishores.com Recycle, Reuse and Reduce. The Chamber’s Greener Living committee is a year-round educational resource to improve the health and well-being of our community’s yards, environment, families, and pets. Just like last year, you can ride your bike to the event, park it at the DCS sponsored bike valet, stroll through a plant sale, buy some fresh local produce at the farmer’s market, and get tips on green home improvements, rain barrels, solar cookers, and composting. And virtually every local civic group, school, and church will be there, explaining what they do and often times incorporating a green message or activity (one school is running a used book sale!). So come on out and enjoy yourself. Peruse almost 150 vendors, share a laugh, a beverage, and even learn something in the process! And bring your own water bottle. There will be water stations available where you can fill them up, so we don’t add more disposable plastic water bottles to our oceans. Gotta be green for Green Day! Cubillos I hope everyone had a great summer! This is the time of year that children go back to school and safety should be a top priority. Please let’s all respect the speed limit signs and drive as if your child was playing on the street. In order to ensure El Portal children were properly prepared for the upcoming school year, we hosted a “Back to School” backpack giveaway on Wednesday August 19th at the Village Hall. I would like to thank Waste Management for their generosity in donating over 80 backpacks, which included composition notebooks, pencils and other supplies. I would also like to thank the El Portal Police Department for their time to assist in handing out the backpacks and providing tips to children and parents regarding school safety. On July 29th El Portal hosted a Three Villages Social, which included residents and business leaders from El Portal, Miami Shores, and Biscayne Park. The social was held in cooperation with the Greater Miami Shores Chamber of Commerce and its new Three Villages Committee. Thanks to the generous sponsors who made this event possible, including: Realtor Nancy Dawson and The Alexander Hotel. Lastly, I am happy and excited to report that our El Portal Nature Trail Community Park Expansion Project was selected by the Miami Foundation as one of 18 winners of the 2015 Public Space Challenge. This Challenge is part of a growing ecosystem of platforms and advocates pushing for greater investment in Miami-Dade County parks and local gathering places. Miami Shores History Corner Each month, we feature a question or a photograph from our Archives. The Miami Shores Country Club donates a $25 gift certificate to a randomly drawn person supplying the correct response. The winner is drawn on the 15th of the month. Last month we asked if anyone knew the street pictured above in a photograph lent to us from the personal collection of Miami Shores resident Seth Bramson, and in what direction we are looking. Yes, it was 96th Street looking east. The shot is from 1926! Our randomly drawn winner is Jairo Ribero of El Portal. No question this month, just a wonderful story about Biscayne Park, supplied by a reader. Enjoy! In the 1920’s, Arthur Mertlow Griffing had acquired and begun developing land along Dixie Highway north of Miami. The nursery was sold and the land subdivided and named Griffing Biscayne Park Estates. Mr. Griffing continued his love of landscaping by carefully planting the area with shrubs and trees so that Biscayne Park Estates resembled a huge botanical garden. Early in January 1923, Mr. Griffing began advertising in the Miami Daily Metropolis and set up a miniature of the Park. Prospective buyers were shuttled from downtown Miami to the new “Gateway to Miami”. Mr. Griffing combined his land sales with his nursery promotions by offering a free strawberry shortcake to potential buyers, particularly young families, to live in his new development. In addition he produced safe environments for children to play near their homes by creating many culde-sacs. The well-landscaped streets, medians and park areas laid out by Mr. Griffing set the stage for the first homes erected in the development which cost between $4,000 and $4,500. The shortcake incentive was later 26 { } GREEN DAY2015 upgraded to a mixed box of grapefruits and oranges. By a vote of its 113 citizens, the Town of Biscayne Park was incorporated on December 31, 1931, and on June 16th, 1933, a state charter was granted changing the name to the Village of Biscayne Park. The Works Progress Administration built a log cabin, a clear and distinct reference to the Depression as well as to the simplicity of the American frontier days. On February 1, 1933, at the height of the Depression, the Federal Emergency Relief Program provided the labor for the Dade County pine construction. William Green, a resident of the Park, as well as a Councilperson, was a regional administrator for the Federal program and was certainly instrumental in the creation of the Park’s singular and distinctive building. “Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel.” Socrates Our journey to … Montessori for homeschooling parents • • • • • • • • Join our Waldorf-inspired Art House Science Days at our STEM Room Science Fair and Literacy Pow Wow Field Days for Fun & Social Experiences Book Club Meetings Virtual Tutoring Tutoring Ages 4 to 13 Parent Training – Multi-level Teaching NEW! In light of today’s multiple million dollar projects, these modest sums seem very quaint, but when held in light of the circumstances in which they occurred during the national depression, they reflect generous and caring residents and a community that was conscientious of their town. At a special ceremony on January 24th, 1935, the finished Log Cabin was officially turned over to the Village, and to this day has been the center for the daily operations of the Park. Since its creation in the thirties, it has been the prized symbol of the Village of Biscayne Park. 5/21/15 4:11 PM miamishores.com WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT IMBURGIA REALTY. “We knew the moment we saw our house that it would make the perfect home.
