outdoor fun of any kind creates lasting memories
and helps build leadership skills? You and your
Girl Scout troop can do so many things together
outdoors, from hiking through the
woods to camping in your
own backyard.
Writing from the Tent:
Daisy Backyard Camp Out Made Simple.
Submitted by Kneka Smith,
Troop Leader, Troop 1069
The girls are asleep. We've almost
made it! And now let us reflect on
what we've learned so far from our
second Daisy Backyard Camp out.
First, even though we have a
large, multi-level troop with 30
girls, multiple leaders, and parent
volunteers, we designed this camp
out for our first grade, bridging
Daisies. Our goals were to practice
camping at home so that we can
determine which girls were ready for
overnight trips, as well as celebrate
the fact that the girls were bridging!
After the girls arrived at 4 p.m., we
had a welcoming circle on the
grass. We reviewed some safety
strategies with them, and then the
girls excitedly helped us set up three
tents. There was no complaining
and everyone was having fun!
Next up was meal prep. The girls
worked with one leader while two
others finished staking tents. Each
girl was shown how to safely cut
with a knife to prepare fruit for
breakfast, as well as cucumbers,
sweet peppers, and carrots for a
finger salad for dinner. While at the
table, we served snacks of carrots,
goldfish crackers, and water.
After the tents were up and the food
prep was complete, we established
buddies and went for a short hike on
a trail right behind our hosts’ home
in a pretty wooded backyard area
that runs along a marsh. The girls
were having so much fun and smiling.
During our walk, we discussed
not picking the plants, and the
importance of staying on trail.
4
Back at the “campsite,” the girls
stayed with their buddies as they
retrieved their sleeping gear, and
selected sleeping spots. They did
this step by themselves without adults telling them where
to sleep or arranging their bedding. Another success!
Doesn’t this sound
like fun? Do you want to
do this with YOUR bridging
Daisies? You’ll need to
make sure that you have
both parts of Troop Camp
Training Preparation and
Overnight.
Now it was time for dinner! First step - we had to build a
fire. The girls arranged the wood in different ways and we
discussed different types of fires. Three girls cooked hot
dogs while four girls prepared the table by plating food. A
leader poured lemonade. Dinner included hot dogs, finger
salad, and strawberry and watermelon slices. After singing a
gathering song of thanks, we all ate together.
After dinner, we had cleanup and we had two trash bags one for food scraps and one for plates, napkins, and
cups. Then the girls played a game before we got to the
best part, s’mores!

Each girl got to roast a marshmallow and we enjoyed
delicious s’mores and sang songs around the campfire. All
too soon, it was time for PJs, tooth-brushing, and potty time
(we all headed into the house for this little task). Then, into
tents for some giggling and flashlight fun.
Our camp out will end at 8 a.m. on Sunday morning. The
morning will consist of unloading personal gear, breaking
down the tents, and
eating breakfast.
Breakfast will be
sliced fruit and miniboxes of cereal.
Then we’ll end with
a closing circle.
Simple. Fun.

Did You Know?
Camp is awesome! Girls with more frequent outdoor experiences are
more likely to seek challenges and are better at solving problems—qualities
that will help them both academically and personally in the future.
Camp gives her cool new experiences! 72% of girls surveyed said that Girl
Scouts gave them the chance to build their skills or try new outdoor activities.
Camp makes everything better! Spending time in nature improves
concentration and creative reasoning. Outdoor experiences also help
promote healthy social development and increase her self-esteem.

<<< You’ll get
all this and SO
much more
at Girl Scout
summer camp.
“To me, camp is more than just canoeing and smore’s. It taught me skills that I use in the outdoors and
in my everyday life, like how to form meaningful relationships. At camp, I made four wonderful lifelong
friends who taught me the true meaning of friendship, showing me that no matter where you are in the
world, no matter what you have been through, you are accepted and loved for who you are. It’s not just a
summer camp, it’s so much more, and it’s all for you to discover!”

A Family of
Girl Scout
Camp Fans
Submitted by Sarah Levine
What could be better for a family of five
girls than Girl Scouts? Elizabeth and I were both
Girl Scouts when we were younger, and I am currently
volunteering with Girl Scouts of Maine. Our daughter,
Riley, 10, started as a Daisy and is now a Junior; Teagan,
7, just bridged to Brownies, and Finley, 4, will be starting
Daisies this year!
And what is even better than Girl Scouts?
Girl Scout camp!
Both Elizabeth and I went to Girl Scout camp in the 80’s
and 90’s. I went to Camp Echo Trail and Shelley Ridge
in Pennsylvania. Elizabeth went to Camp Pondicherry
and Kirkwold here in Maine. So this year, to continue the
tradition, it was Riley’s turn to go to camp. Riley loves
horses, so she decided to attend Pondi-Riders for a
week in the summer of 2015.
The
whole
family
decided
to go
visit Camp Pondicherry before summer began so Riley
could get acquainted with the camp and counselors
before her week away. Wouldn’t you know it, Teagan
loved it so much, she begged us to go to camp too! How
could we say no?
We signed Teagan up to attend the four day “Trail
Seekers.” Both girls had an amazing time at camp, and we
are sure it is only a matter of time before Finley will want
to attend with her sisters and continue the Girl Scout
camp legacy started by their moms 30 years ago!

CIT
Leadership Experience
The
at
Camp
Have you dreamed of being a camp counselor one day? At GSME summer camp,
we have an awesome CIT program to get you ready to be just that!
The first step is to take CIT 1, where you will develop your leadership and outdoor
living skills, learn the basics of being a camp counselor, and the essential skills to
keep campers happy and engaged with fun games and songs. Oh, there will still
be time to enjoy your favorite camp activities! Just note that you must be 15 upon
entering this program with at least one week of resident camp experience.
Next take CIT 2, where you will take the final step to becoming a stellar camp
counselor! Building on the skills learned in CIT 1, you will plan and run activities,
spend time in units as a mentor to campers, and work directly with the counselors
and administrative staff. This great leadership opportunity will prepare you to apply
for a camp staff position and build your resume!
For all the details of the CIT experience, including available dates and camps, check
out our Summer Camp Programs, starting on page 18.

Iat Camp
have
attended summer camp
Natarswi for five years. This past summer, I
signed up for the CIT program with two of my closest
friends and was blessed with the opportunity to grow as
a leader.
The importance of communication, problem solving, and
being able to see the potential in every situation were
invaluable traits I acquired from my experience. Sure,
leadership has its challenges, things like singing the same
camp song for the 100th time with campers whom I was
desperately trying to win over. But in all of us, there is a
strange recognition that there is no place we’d rather be
and nothing else we’d rather be doing.
Being a CIT at camp taught me – someone who is very
quiet – how to start a conversation with anyone about
anything. My biggest challenge as a CIT was coming out
of my shell and building enough confidence to become
the friendly, helpful camp counselor each Natarswi staff
member embodies, but I believe I’m well on my way to
being that person.
I use the leadership skills learned in my time as a CIT on a
daily basis. As a field hockey captain, I know that leading
by example cannot be understated in importance or
value. Academically, I am a leader by asking questions
that help me and my peers have a deeper understanding
of what is being taught to us.
As I continue to use these skills in everyday life and to
grow as a person, through high school, college, and
beyond, I have Camp Natarswi to thank for the leadership
skills I have developed and Girl Scouts to thank for the
opportunities they have given me.

Mom and Me
Weekend 2015
My daughter Isabella earned her free week of camp, so
she decided that she would use it for a fun weekend
with me! This weekend was very well organized and
the staff was absolutely great. We attended as many
activities as we possibly could and made so many
new friends.
I loved seeing Isabella overcome fears that she had at
mini-camp just two weeks before. She overcame her
fear of climbing to the tippy top of the climbing rock
with the Ranger’s help. She has now picked up a new
skill set in archery.
If you want to have a weekend where you can bond
with your daughter and watch her blossom, this is the
weekend for you.

“Taking the Junior Maine Guide course at Camp Natarswi
was the highlight of my summer! It was very hard
work, but I learned so much and made some amazing
friendships. The counselor was especially great. The test
camp was really intense and exciting. It was definitely an
experience I will remember for my whole life. I especially
liked learning to use an axe ambidextrously! The climb up
Katahdin was another highlight.
Because of my status as a Junior Maine Guide, I have
been offered a more responsible volunteer position at
the local Arboretum. I feel much more confident about
my wilderness skills, camp cooking, and knowledge of
the outdoors, and better about myself in general.”

Troop 1082 had a blast at Mini-Camp at Camp Natarswi last fall. We spent the
weekend expanding our cooking skills, learning some new techniques in food
prep and cooking, both outside and inside on fires and camp stoves.
Between meals, we got to experience rock climbing, most of us climbing for the
first time! We spent hours at the archery range earning the new Cadette archery
badge. Three brave girls also jumped into the lake, taking the polar plunge amid
white caps and 20 degree air temps on Saturday morning. BRRRR!
Troop 1082 loved camping
outside at Natarswi despite the
freezing temperatures. They were offered a
to sleep in, but every girl declined! Pictured, left to right:

Our best year yet
at Camp Natarswi!
Submitted by Troop 796
For three years in a row now, Troop 796 has attended
Mini-Camp at Natarswi where we stay in our favorite
campsite, Ridge.
Every year it gets better, and this year we had the
most fun! We still got to do all our favorite activities
like swimming, hiking, and archery, as well as try
out two new activities – canoeing and building
primitive shelters – with our new friend, M1, a
staff member at camp.
During our first canoe session, we learned
how to maneuver the canoe around a
natural obstacle course, and took time to
stop and enjoy the great views.
For the second canoeing session, M1 took us out
to the island to explore. We loved parking the
canoes, getting out, and learning some facts
about both the island and local natural trees
and shrubs.
The second new activity we enjoyed was
primitive shelter building. The girls never
thought we would be able to make a shelter
out of sticks and pine needles. Not only did we
succeed, but we also made it big enough for all
three of them to fit inside! It was a great new
experience in outdoor skills and teamwork, and
M1 was a great teacher.
Overall, it was another great weekend at
Girl Scout camp!

friendly, caring, and trained camp counselors. Attend for one
or two week sessions at Camp Pondicherry or Camp Natarswi.
Tremendous fun awaits you as you learn new skills, songs and games,
and celebrate friendships around the warmth of a campfire. But even more than that,
our camps allow you to discover the courageous, confident, independent, and allaround awesome girl in you!
Our camp programs let you achieve the Trail Master patch, unique to the
Girl Scouts of Maine. Each of the four Trail Master levels allow you to achieve mastery
each year at camp. Build your outdoor skills in areas like archery, boating, hiking, rock
climbing, outdoor living, sailing, swimming, and nature. As a beginning camper, start
by sampling everything. As you return to camp, build more skills in your favorite areas
to achieve all four Trail Master levels!
For rates and dates see Resident Camp Box on pages 18 and 20.

Camp Registration Q&A
I want to go to camp! What next?
I want to go to camp! What is next?
Great - we're so excited that you are excited! Camp registration opens on January 14, 2016 through our online
web portal, eBiz, at girlscoutsofmaine. org, and it will be super easy to register for camp. So sign up today!
Uh oh. I don't have access to a computer or the internet.
That's ok! Although online registration is the fastest way to get registered, we can mail you the registration
form and all the information you will need to register. Just give us a call at 888-922-4763 and ask for the
Help Desk.
I really want my friend to go to camp with me, but she isn't a Girl Scout. Can she come?
Of course! You don’t have to already be a Girl Scout to join the adventure. All girls are welcome! Your friend
will just need to join as a member before she can begin her camp registration. Tell your friend to go to
girlscoutsofmaine.org where she can become a registered member for $30 before she signs up for camp.
Do I need to make a deposit when I register?
Yes, all registrations require a $30 deposit.
But I've been working on the Free Camp Challenge. Do I still pay a deposit?
You go girl! Yes, you still need to submit a $30 deposit to hold a spot in the session that you want, so register
early! Once we know you’ve earned your free session at camp, we will refund your $30 deposit or apply it to
your balance, depending on the camp session you choose.
It’s important to know that the Free Camp Challenge entitles you to $435 toward a Girl Scout camp
experience. If you complete the Free Camp Challenge and choose a camp session with a higher cost, we will
apply $435 to your camp session and you will be responsible for the remaining balance. This reward must be
used at a Girl Scouts of Maine camp during the summer of 2016 - sorry, it cannot be carried over to another year.
When is all the money due?
Camp balances must be paid in full by May 31, 2016. Any camp registrations received on
or after May 31, 2016 will require full payment at the time of registration.
How can I pay?
We accept credit card, money order, or personal check. Cash is accepted if you pay in person
at one of our service centers - please do not send cash through the mail!
Can I apply for financial assistance?
Yes. GSME has a small amount of financial assistance set aside to help families in need to send
their girl to camp. All members may apply for a GSME Campership - another great reason to be
a registered Girl Scout!
How do I apply for a campership?
We award camperships based on family need on a first come, first served basis, until all the
available assistance has been awarded. If you are a Girl Scout, once you register for camp,
you’ll get information on how to submit a Campership application. Applications are due
March 21, 2016. Decisions will be made by mid-April.
Ok I’ve registered. What’s next?
All your registration confirmations and camp communications are sent via email. We will
use the email address that is on your Girl Scout membership profile for updates and
reminders. Please make sure you are using a current email address to avoid missing any
important information. If you need to update your email, or aren’t sure of what it is, contact
our Help Desk at [email protected] or 888-922-4763.
What happens if I need to cancel?
We hope you won't need to cancel, but if you do, GSME will retain a $30 non-refundable,
non-transferable administrative fee, and the remaining camp fees will be refunded to you.
However, after May 31, 2016, refunds (minus the $30 administrative fee) can only be
considered for health reasons, and must be verified by a note from your doctor.
For camp updates, keep tabs on our website at girlscoutsofmaine.org, join our email list
and friend us on Facebook.

Building a Bridge and a Team!
Submitted by Mary Buckelew, Troop 2070
In June 2014, a
group of eight volunteers from Sappi
North America’s Inside Sales team
volunteered their time at Girl Scout
Camp Pondicherry, in Bridgton, Maine
to clear trails for the summer camping
season. While working, Sappi’s Director
of Inside Sales, Janet Boone, learned
from the camp ranger, Jeremy Bates,
that the Girl Scouts were planning to
open a new trail in the summer of
2015 on the Warren Brook property.
The new trail would follow the Warren
Brook waterway and need four crossing
points along the way. To help the
Girl Scouts understand the materials,
costs, and skill level of volunteers
needed to construct the bridges, Janet
introduced them to Roger Brenner,
a Sappi Inside Sales Manager with
knowledge in this area.
28
Over the course of the winter beginning in late 2014 through early
2015 - Roger worked with Jeremy on
the bridge design and the material
requirements. After a few design
modifications, Roger began working on
the first bridge from his home. Once
satisfied with the resulting bridge he
constructed, Roger deconstructed it
for transport to Camp Pondicherry.
In June of 2015, five Sappi Inside
Sales team members spent the day
at Pondicherry transporting the
deconstructed bridge to its new home
and reassembling it with support from
Jeremy and an assistant ranger.
On September 25, the Sappi team
and representatives from GSME hiked
into the site to officially dedicate the
Warren Brook Bridge. Commemorating
the occasion were Sappi’s VP
Coated Paper & Packaging Deece
Hannigan, Director of Inside Sales
Janet Boone, Inside Sales Manager
National Accounts Roger Brenner,
Mary Buckelew, Vicky Dahms, Tricia
Davidson, Shaun Fleck, Marc Halverson,
Angela Hart, Kathie Gagnon and Megan
Marshall. Also in attendance from
GSME were CEO Joanne Crepeau,
Chief Advancement Officer Connie
Goulatis, Chief of Outdoor Operations
Mary Ellen Deschenes, Camp
Pondicherry Director Anna Gross, and
Pondicherry Ranger Jeremy Bates.
Dedication remarks were given by
Deece, Joanne, and Connie.
Now officially in place, the Warren
Brook Bridge will be used, crossed, and
enjoyed every summer by Girl Scouts
at Camp Pondicherry. Sappi looks
forward to helping build the remaining
three bridges.
