THE STUDIO ARTS INTENSIVE (SAI) at Gage is a seven-month parttime program designed to help you jump-start your career as an artist
and develop a contemporary, marketable portfolio to help you take your
career to the next level!
FOR MORE THAN 15 YEARS, the jewel in the crown of Gage
instruction has been its distinguished Atelier Program. An intensive
studio program for the serious artist-in-training, Ateliers offer a contemporary variation on the traditional teaching model of the 19th-century
European academies, where dedicated art students apprenticed with a
master artist.
Learn foundation skills in drawing, painting, sculpting and digital painting
from multiple Teaching Artists with the opportunity to develop individual
projects for a final exhibition.

The Aristides Atelier, based on time-tested
studio traditions, offers the opportunity to study
classical drawing and painting techniques with
master artist Juliette Aristides. Information is
presented in a variety of formats intended to
enable students of all levels to grasp even the
most difficult concepts. You graduate with an
unparalleled understanding of the principles of
art. The Aristides Atelier curriculum is designed
to provide fundamental drawing and painting
skills with a strong emphasis on observation
from life. Like the great studios of the past,
working from the human figure in life drawing
and painting forms a pillar of our program.
Challenging and inspiring for artists of all
skill-levels, the Kang-O’Higgins Atelier
empowers artists with the tools and techniques
to express their individual vision and develop
their own artistic voice. Rooted in the figurative
tradition but often deeply personal in style and
consciously narrative in content, KOH artists
build familiarity with many different approaches to both the human figure and the still-life,
as well as other subjects in a variety of media,
and learn to express complexity and nuance
through a sophisticated array of skills.
The Faigin Atelier works with a small group
of painting students interested in focusing
their studio practice on the study of still-life
arrangements over the course of a year. Atelier
instructor and Gage co-founder Gary Faigin
uses still-life as a vehicle to teach the basics
of representation, including value, drawing
and perspective, as well as paint-specific
techniques like glazing, impasto and control
of edges. For more advanced students, studio
still-life is a time-honored subject with unlimited potential. No other subject matter offers the
artist quite as much control over every aspect
of their pictorial effect, and none has as rich
and interesting a history.
The Magrath Sculpture Atelier is a multi-year,
part-time Atelier designed to confer the core disciplines needed to become a practicing figurative
sculptor at a high level of excellence. Led by celebrated sculptor Michael Magrath, students learn
to become adept in both traditional approaches
as well as contemporary concerns in a variety of
media. Build cumulatively upon the core skills of
drawing and modeling from life, while adding critical understanding of anatomy and composition
in the round and relief, as well as technical skills
such as mold making, casting, basic fabrication
and subtractive techniques in wood, stone, metal
and composite materials.
The Trowbridge Atelier is led by acclaimed
contemporary artist Kimberly Trowbridge,
and is designed for students who have some
experience with figure drawing and/or painting,
and are ready to begin the exciting journey of
developing an individual body of work. Student-artists rigorously engage with color theory,
figurative oil painting, collage and mixed-media
drawing — all in the service of building a personal, visual vocabulary to develop a unique body
of work. The Atelier is housed at Gage South
at Equinox Studios in the historic Georgetown
neighborhood in South Seattle. Equinox, a new
studio space that is part of the large and vibrant
Equinox Studio arts community in Georgetown.
The Geoff Flack Core Drawing
Atelier at Gage South at Equinox is
a part-time atelier solely devoted to the craft of
drawing with an emphasis on the human figure.
Through this innovative and distinctive Atelier,
student artists will gain an understanding of how
to create the figure based on observation, and
also from a profound understanding of its construction. The Atelier is housed at Gage South
at Equinox Studios in the historic Georgetown
neighborhood in South Seattle. Equinox, a new
studio space that is part of the large and vibrant
Equinox Studio arts community in Georgetown.

Internationally-known artist Deborah Butterfield has spent her entire life getting to know
horses. Her sculptures are no less mysterious
for being instantly recognizable, using the most
unlikely of materials–scrap metal, driftwood,
found materials, even mud. We’ll review a
range of her work and her quest to re-imagine,
over and over, her favorite beast.

Claude Zervas is a true product of the Pacific
Northwest, inspired by its dramatic landscapes
and abundant flora and fauna. Join us as we
talk to Claude about the reason for his interest
in using un-natural devices and methodologies to channel the beauty and energy of the
natural world.
GAGE ACADEMY OF ART

Gage is proud to partner with Sanctuary Art
Center, an organization with a mission to
provide a safe, warm and calm environment
for homeless and at-risk youth. This spring
and summer, Gage brought artist Lauren Iida
to teach cut-paper workshops at Sanctuary
Art Center. We are proud to display artworks
from those workshops at the CDMP Gallery
this fall. The exhibit is free and open to the
public during gallery hours from September
to October.
Sanctuary Art
The Sanctuary Art Center's mission is to
provide a safe, warm, and calm environment
for homeless and at-risk youth, ages 13-25,
to experience creativity and success through
the use of various artistic media. Our goal is
to engage youth in a creative process and
connect them to the community in which
they live.
Learn the traditional technique of figure
painting using chalk pastels. Explore the
human form with gesture sketches and
basic anatomical drawing. Working from a
live model strengthens speed, accuracy and
understanding of form. Focus on capturing
changes in a wide spectrum of light and dark
colors to produce a vibrant final piece that
will make a great addition to your portfolio!
