The Istituto Europeo di Design boasts over forty years of activity in teaching and research in design, fashion, visual
arts and communication. IED unique approach to teaching design culture is adopted in all four schools: a method
linked to “knowledge and know-how” that illustrates the IED credo.
Today IED is an international institution which maintains its truly Italian roots. A meeting point for culture and
learning, with seats in Milan, Rome, Turin, Venice, Florence, Cagliari, Como, Madrid, Barcelona, San Paolo and
Rio de Janeiro, IED runs three-year and four-year degree and diploma courses, Semester and Academic year
courses, Summer and Specialization courses and Master courses.
Since 1966 IED has developed an innovative teaching method, centred on the synergy between technology and
experimentation, based on creativity, the development of transversal projects, integrated communication strategies and on different aspects linked to the market and new professions. IED method is fostered and enriched by the
constant contact with professionals from all sectors.
IED is a member of several international academic organizations and associations, such as Cumulus (Design
Educational Network co-funded under the Erasmus section of the Socrates Program), ELIA (European League of
Institutes of the Arts), IAA (International Advertising Association), FIYTA, IIE, EAIE and MEC-Brazil and has signed
partnerships and student exchange agreements with over 40 of the top Universities in the world.

IED has a global feel and international vision, it is able to grasp new product and market trends and therefore provide teaching that is constantly updated. It is a real community of professionals, teachers, companies, institutions
and students whose constant interaction creates a network of relations and culture capable of generating creativity
and innovation.
Becoming part of the IED world gives students the chance to study in one of the IED seats and experience the
Genius Loci, the culture of the place, while growing in an international atmosphere: an opportunity for an extraordinary personal experience and a great chance to increase your cultural knowledge and grow as professionals and
world citizens.

IED Design
IED Moda
IED Design is the complete and practical answer to the
countless demands of the professional design world.
The concept of design is now deeply rooted in every
sector of merchandise, in their contents, language, expression and style, as well as in functional and technical aspects. By definition designers are innovators of
style and function, interpreting and forerunning emerging aesthetic lines and the functional needs of their
time. IED is always in touch with the latest oscillations
in tastes and trends, and creates professionals able to
work in various sectors from street furniture to car and
toy design, from fashion accessories to IT support, just
to name a few.
IED greatest success lies in the ability to train professionals able to seduce with their creativity and manage, with equal ability, the concept, coordination and
production of a collection of garments, accessories and
jewellery, as well as the composition and styling, sales
planning, programming for the season and logistics of
the product, marketing and brand communication in the
many different fashion sectors. A key factor here is the
relationship with the Sistema Moda Italiana, the most
important association in the world of textiles and fashion industries. Students at IED learn to experience and
feel fashion as a whole and in each single element.

IED Visual Communication
IED Management Lab
IED Visual Communication is the creative laboratory
where students learn the tools, expressive and linguistic register, new techniques and the necessary ability
to develop a visual communication project. In a world
where values and meaning are mainly conveyed through
sound and image visual communication is fundamental
for transmitting ideas and concepts linked to different
areas of production, advertising and culture, politics and
society.
The “look” of a project is a major contributor to how successfully a message is communicated. Moving competently and professionally in this field requires an eclectic
transversal culture, based on a thorough knowledge of
both the surrounding social-cultural context and the
latest technologies that continuously modify the role of
images and sounds in communication.
IED Management Lab is the first IED school dedicated
to teaching on topics linked to managing creativity in
business processes. Managers in communication and
marketing, brands and events, advertising and public
relations are sought after by companies who need specialists that are prepared and able to innovate. IED Management Lab provides an alternative model to traditional
business, economics and communications schools,
concentrating the methodology on teaching “design
thinking” and typical design culture with an emphasis
on innovation and creativity. IED aim is to create professionals able to promote and manage the development
process of new products and services, within a traditional or creative business.

IED Method
Learning to learn
Learning to participate and compete
The IED network works with 1900 lecturers, all successful professionals in their sphere who are able to
provide clear theory and practical project works. Class
size range from 10-25 students, depending on course
requirements; this favours student-teacher interaction
and allows students to fully benefit from their lecturer’s
knowledge and skills.
The IED method includes numerous creative competitions and group projects. All creative people, whether
they design material goods, strategies or complex
services, have to work with a range of professionals.
Learning to work as part of a team of skilled professionals is essential for those wishing to enter the Design
world.
Learning by doing
Learning to communicate
and build relationships
In all areas of preparation at IED “learning by doing” is
an absolute must. Participation to the numerous laboratory activities and regular attendance at lectures guarantee that IED student’s training turns into real skills.
Learning to interact
with the production system
The practical experience provided at IED means students quickly learn design culture. IED students work
on real projects commissioned by public and private
companies, institutions and manufacturers. Students
can immediately verify the efficacy of the theories learnt
and experience working with the production system.
IED METHOD
IED aims at constantly improving services through discussion, exchange
and collaboration with the private companies, professional communities,
universities, institutions and young people that represent the future.

A good designer is able to listen to and understand different points of view. Students at IED gain the professional experience needed to learn and grow through
workshops and special projects, which encourage them
to form good relations with students in different areas
of training at the school as well as with external companies and institutions.
Learning to start
and manage your career
IED wants to produce graduates who continue to grow
and are always up to date with the shifting trends in the
work place, that is why IED is in constant contact with
businesses and institutions for advanced research and
technology, making IED ready to answer to the changing needs of the market. This approach is transferred to
the students at IED, who are from the outset encouraged
to take up the challenge and are given the necessary
tools to manage their own enterprise.
Services and Facilities
With classrooms for theory lessons, student common
rooms, state-of-the-art laboratories and qualified staff
IED has built an effective network of schools and facilities that transform knowledge into know-how.

IED MADRID
Innovative Professionals for the
Urban and Domestic Habitat
Centuries of shared influences have marked the historical and cultural relations between Italy and Spain. In a way,
the decision that Spain would be the first country outside Italy to host IED campuses came quite naturally.
In this city, one of the most important in the world and a crossroads of European and Latin American cultures,
IED develops its teaching in design in its traditional areas (Design, Fashion, the Visual Arts and Communication),
while also implementing innovative areas to train professionals capable of designing interactions, services and
systems that put the focus on the individual.
These are professionals who are conscious of contemporary issues able to design according to environmental,
ethical-social, economic and political requirements.
IED Madrid is a cultural institution for the dissemination of design and its connections to other disciplines like
architecture, art, cinema and music, boasting a diverse programme (exhibitions, conferences, and events linked to
a vision of the future) and a publishing house which produces an array of publications that clearly demonstrate IED
centre’s educational activity and the quality of its best exponents: the designers and future professionals.

IED BARCELONA
Visionary Designers and Managers
to follow Gaudí
In 2002, IED opened its Barcelona centre in Gràcia, one of the most authentic and charismatic neighbourhoods in
the city. Over this 11 years, the school has become a reference point in the teaching of design, both nationally and
internationally. A leading observatory of trends and research, with a project culture at its heart, that offers students
the chance to carry out innumerable projects with companies. Faithful to its tradition of continuous innovation and
inquisitiveness for change, IED Barcelona has decided to initiate new projects for a thorough reform of all the elements that constitute the complex process of a design education.
2012 was a key year for IED Barcelona as it has marked its 10th anniversary, and its conversion to a Higher Level
Design School, with the official approval of all its courses as well as the inauguration of the new seat. More than
5.000 m2 with labs for fashion, interior and product design, communication and video, in addition to classrooms and
facilities for conferences that enable the development of laboratory and research activities, turning IED into a creative,
unique and pioneer design space in the city of Barcelona.
