S
utter Street is well known as the
heart of Folsom, the city’s unique
crown jewel. The street is as old as
Folsom and has an interesting history
that dates back to the Gold Rush era.
Beginning in the 1850s, Sutter Street
was the core of Folsom’s business
district. Gold prospectors and settlers
were drawn to its hotels, saloons,
stores, livery stables, bank, post office
and barbershop. The Pony Express thundered along the dirt street. Residents
cheered the arrival of the west’s first passenger train.
Disastrous fires destroyed many of the businesses between the 1860s and
1880s, but failed to extinguish the community’s pioneer spirit. New brick
buildings soon replaced the wooden frame structures, and a system of water
mains and fireplugs along Sutter and Wool streets vastly improved fire safety.
Autos were the favored mode of travel in 1915 when the Sutter Street
segment of the Lincoln Highway opened. This paved roadway was the first
transcontinental highway stretching from New York to San Francisco.
Businesses included drug stores, a movie theater, hardware store, bank and
hotels. Sutter Street continued to be the heart of Folsom’s business district.
In recent years many felt the time was ripe for the revitalization of Sutter
Street. City officials, merchants and residents worked closely and completed the
revitalization project in May of 2011. The project provided a much needed face lift
while preserving the historic character and ambiance. The next phase of the project
is almost complete and will include a public plaza and outdoor amphitheater
along with more residential and retail space (see next page for details).
AWARDS
The California Downtown Association honored Historic Sutter Street Revitalization Project with the Excellence Award in the Physical Improvement category.
The Sacramento Chapter of the American Public Works Association selected
the Historic Folsom Revitalization Project for its
Project of the Year Award
for Historic Restoration
and Preservation.
Historic Folsom Station was awarded the
Transit Oriented Development of the year in 2010 by Regional Transit.

Rail Yard Redevelopment
ENHANCING THE FOLSOM
HISTORIC DISTRICT - THE PLAZA
I
n spring of 2012, the first phase of the new
Historic Folsom Plaza will be revealed. The
Plaza was designed with many new and
exciting features. An outdoor amphitheater
with tiered seating perfect for outdoor
entertainment is a key element of the Plaza.
It will also be home to Historic Folsom’s very
own outdoor ice skating rink scheduled to open winter of 2012.
Continued development of the Plaza will include the Granite House
building, offering retail and restaurant spaces combined with residential living above. Another feature of the plaza will be the roundhouse restaurant
which will provide extensive outdoor dining overlooking the
historic turntable in the center of the plaza.
The Plaza will continue to expand over the next several
years adding more retail and residential opportunities. It
will connect Sutter Street to the parking garage offering
the Historic Folsom District additional venue space for
future events and entertainment.
To learn more about the future development and get information regarding retail and residential opportunities please
visit: www.FolsomStation.com or email to [email protected].

Art, Theatre & Music
Art galleries, live theatre and live music can be found throughout the district.
Be sure to check the calendar for the Historic Folsom’s Second Saturday event,
a night filled with art, entertainment and late night shopping.
Museums
With such a rich history, Historic Folsom offers several museums to explore
{
• Folsom History Museum… this wonderful little museum will take you
from Folsom’s origins right to present times. Numerous displays and a
great gift shop can be found. Visit www.folsomhistorymuseum.org to see
what special display and events are available.
• Folsom Powerhouse…construction of the Folsom Powerhouse made
history in 1895 with the first long-distance transmission of electricity-- 22
miles from Folsom to Sacramento. The Powerhouse helped usher in the
age of electricity with this notable accomplishment.
• Folsom Railroad Museum… The museum is located by the Train
Depot on the railroad block in Historic Folsom, next to the Chamber of
Commerce. The site boasts a reconstruction of an ‘A’ frame
or ‘gallows’ type ‘turntable’ used to turn
locomotives as well as a Pullman Car, Boxcar
and Caboose. Check ahead for hours of
operation by calling 916-985-6031.
• Pioneer Village…Taste the life of the pioneers!
Costumed docents lead students through
these outdoor living-history sites that offer
opportunities to feel what the life of the
pioneers was really like. Students can climb aboard a caboose, pan for
gold, watch a blacksmith, tour a settler’s cabin and much more.
Call 916-985-2707 for more information.
