MERCADO BILINGÜE AGOSTO 2016 5 10 U.S. LATINO OLYMPIANS TO WATCH IN RIO The 2016 Olympics are happening right now in Rio, Brazil and although we’ve already had a week of games, medals and winners, there is still plenty of Olympians to cheer on. Here are a just a few of the U.S. Latino Olympians to watch for this year in Rio: TONY AZEVEDO Azevedo, who plays water polo, was actually born in Rio de Janeiro but moved to California when he was five years old. He overcame a childhood injury that doomed him to a life of “no sports” and is now competing in his fifth consecutive Olympic games. CARLOS BALDERAS DANELL LEYVA 19 year old Balderas is a first generation Mexican-American boxer from California. With his father ringside as his coach, this is Balderas’ first appearance at the Olympics. A Cuban-American gymnast, Leyva previously won a bronze medal in the 2012 London Olympics in the Men’s All Around competition. This year he’s aiming for gold. STEVEN LOPEZ At 37 years old, Lopez is a seasoned Taekwondo pro. Not only is he the most decorated member of the United States’ “First Family of Taekwondo”, according to NBC Sports, but he is also a four-time Olympian and five-time world champion. ANITA ALVAREZ Swimming since she was 5 years old, Alvarez is now 19 and recently won every high school swimming competition she entered during her senior year. This is her first year appearing in the Olympics, participating in synchronized swimming. 6 DIANA TAURASI LAURIE HERNANDEZ When she’s not playing professional basketball for the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury, Argentina-American pro-baller Diana Taurasi is playing on the USA women’s national team at this year’s Olympics. Laurie Hernandez is the first Latina gymnast to represent the USA in the Olympics since 1984. A Puerto Rican-American from New Jersey, Hernandez won the junior all-around national title last year. AGOSTO 2016 NICO HERNANDEZ Although Hernandez runs cross country, wrestles and plays soccer, boxing is his true love and this year he’s looking to win gold at his first appearance at the Olympics. ANGELICA DELGADO MELISSA GONZALEZ A midfielder for Team USA, Gonzalez has made her mark with Team USA, having already won gold twice at the Pan American Games. This year, the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) and Dallas Fort Worth Clean Cities Coalition (DFWCC) invite all North Texans to witness another record breaking event. Hundreds of people are set to gather and learn about EVs and their unique charging equipment at this year’s DFW NDEW event on Saturday, September 17. Taking place from 10 am – 2pm at Grapevine Mills Mall, attendees can expect to get up close and personal with this cutting-edge technology. Activities such as informational displays from organizations and technologies, hands on activities for adults and children, entertainment, ride and drive opportunities with available EV models, and even win the use of an EV for a day! The adoption of clean vehicle technology is crucial for the DFW region. Currently, ten counties are in nonattainment for the pollutant ozone, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). North Texas is home to thousands of passionate EV owners. Attendees can expect to hear from early adopters to those just embracing the technology at NDEW 2016. Learn for yourself why this clean technology is a way for the region to improve air quality, reduce petroleum consumption, and create clean energy jobs. NCTCOG and DFWCC are looking to beat 116 EVs in one place this year. Help set a new record by visiting www.dfwcleancities.org/ ndew for more information and to RSVP. The event is completely free and the whole family is encouraged to come! MERCADO BILINGÜE AGOSTO 2016 7 MIS MOTORES 2017 NISSAN ARMADA by Fabian Campos subtler indulgence. The only knock on the interior is a few cheap-feeling plastics including the faux-wood inserts. Not a deal-breaker but could irk a slew of the ever-so-picky American car buyer. Considering the overall package of the 2017 Nissan Armada, the automaker makes up for these sub-par design elements in other areas. For instance, the interior was very quiet both on and off-road. This is thanks to the adopted front door and front windshield acoustic glass. Very impressive. PERFORMANCE AND DRIVING IMPRESSIONS We spent three amazing days in Carmel Valley, CA with Nissan during what they dubbed their Nissan: Year of the Truck program. Looking at their 2017 lineup of the Nissan Titan, Nissan Pathfinder and Nissan Armada — they weren’t kidding. Nissan’s dedication to improvements across their entire lineup in all areas (performance, technology, safety, design, etc) was evident in each of these three vehicles. We had plenty of seat time in each but the standout to us was the 2017 Nissan Armada. QX80-LIKE DESIGN WITH LESS PRETENTIOUSNESS At first glance the Infiniti QX80’s design similarity is unmistakable. 8 But a closer look shows that aside from the obvious badge difference, the 2017 Nissan Armada maintains a great balance of elegant design with a touch of brute queues to let you know that it’s ready for some rough and tough action. The overall exterior is bold and gruff with standout elements such as the V-Motion front grille; standard LED head, tail and daytime running lights; two-tone fenders; front and rear two-tone lower fascia and gorgeous smoked 20-inch aluminum-alloy machined wheels. Interior appointments were also upgraded from the outgoing Armada but not to the point of embarrassment. Again it shares queues with the QX80 but with a AGOSTO 2016 The 2017 Armada’s power comes from a 5.6-liter Endurance® V8 producing 390hp 394 lb-ft of torque which is mated to a new 7-speed automatic transmission. For such a large SUV, power delivery was immediate and incredibly responsive in a variety of terrain. From the highway to neighborhood roads then to an offroad course and back, the Armada’s responsiveness and power brought plenty of satisfying moments of confidence. While the cabin is ultra-quite, it allowed just enough engine rumble noise in when we mashed on the accelerator. Grins of confidence followed every time. The Armada’s overall driving feel was a massive improvement over the outgoing model as it moved away from the Titan platform to a fully boxed all-steel frame with front and rear double-wishbone suspension, auto-leveling rear suspension, twin-tube shock absorbers and engine-speed-sensitive powerassisted rack-and-pinion steering. I can’t fully explain the specifics of all of those elements but I can tell you driving such a massive vehicle was a breeze and felt way more like a crossover than a truck. Fuel economy comes in at an EPA estimated 14 mpg city, 19 mpg highway and 16 mpg combined for the Armada 4x2 and 13 mpg city, 18 mpg highway and 15 mpg combined for the Armada 4x4. 2017 NISSAN ARMADA TRIM LEVELS AND BASE PRICE The 2017 Nissan Armada is offered in SV, SL, and Platinum trims with 2-wheel and 4-wheel drive available across all trims. While considered the “base level” trim, the SV gets heated, power front seats, navigation, 13-speaker Bose audio along with dual-zone climate control and several other standard creature-comfort features - all with a starting price of $44,400 plus $995 destination. The 2017 Armada will be available mid-August. See you on the road, amigos. Fabian Campos TECH SPECS »» Base price: $44,400 (+995 destination) »» Engine: 5.6-litre V-8 »» Transmission/Drive: Sevenspeed automatic, 2 and 4-wheel drive »» Alternatives: Infiniti QX80, Chevy Tahoe, GMC Yukon, Ford Expedition and Toyota Sequoia MERCADO BILINGÜE MERCADO BILINGÜE AGOSTO 2016 9 It’s Almost Here: The State Fair of Texas 2016!
