This annual event, put on by Blue Star Contemporary Art Museum's MOSAIC education program, brings local artists and community organizations together to create an exciting event full of creative fun. Medina River Natural Area Green Spaces Alliance Description: Since 2002, Green Spaces Alliance has introduced thousands of children to photography and the wonders of nature through the Picture Your World Youth Photography Project. A Green Spaces’ program instructor, a professional photographer, and a naturalist lead monthly workshops that teach students the basics of photography and build their appreciation for the natural world. The workshops take place at beautiful outdoor sites throughout the San Antonio area. Picture Your World is open to all interested students age 8-18. Parents are welcome to attend. Green Spaces provides digital cameras to students who wish to borrow one, or participants may bring their own cameras. Each workshop costs $10 for Green Spaces members’ children and $20 for the children of non-members, but this fee may be waived for students demonstrating financial need. Medina River Natural Area - Sunday, March 22, 1:00pm – 4:30pm The Medina River runs through this 500-acre Natural Area constructed on the site of the old proposed Applewhite Reservoir. The hike and bike trials are of varying degrees of difficulty and accessibility. They follow along the river and climb to the upland areas above the north shore. Ever wonder what a work of art might sound like? Explore the McNay’s collection with symphony musician Kayleigh Miller and her viola; then create an original musical instrument. Sessions at 1:00 & 3:00 pm. What is Family Art Play? The last Sunday of every month, the McNay offers a program for families that involves looking carefully at works of art and investigating a studio or performance component afterwards. For Family Art Plays, McNay members reserve space by calling 210.805.1768 by noon Friday before the activity. Nonmembers, pick up remaining free passes the day of activity. Compare and create patterns through a variety of media including tapa cloth designs and weavings. https://www.samuseum.org/learn/for-children-and-families CULTURE Institute of Texan Cultures EXHIBIT - Sikhs: Legacy of the Punjab February 21, 2015 - October 18, 2015 ITC welcomes exhibit on a growing Texan community. The Institute of Texan Cultures will host the traveling exhibit, "Sikhs: Legacy of the Punjab," developed by the Smithsonian Institution and sponsored by the Sikh Heritage Foundation. Sikhs, a unique culture and religion, originate in the Punjab region of India, straddling the India-Pakistan border. Male Sikhs are easily recognized by their turbans and untrimmed beards. The community and its leaders have been working with the museum to continue educating about their culture, which has experienced discrimination and suspicion in a post-9/11 society. In San Antonio, the Sikh community has grown to nearly 300 families. The exhibit features a collection of traditional Sikh art, information on the culture’s history and beliefs, artifacts such as ceremonial weapons and armor, and a model of the Golden Temple, one of the sacred sites of the Sikh religion. http://www.texancultures.com/ FAMILY DAYS AT THE INSTITUTE FOR TEXAN CULTURES Los Peloteros: Baseball and the Tejano Community (FREE) Sunday, March 8, 2015, 2:00pm-4:00pm This program will reveal the extent to which baseball was part of the fabric of the Tejano community in Texas. The baseball diamond provided a sanctuary from social and political noise and allowed the players to establish themselves as equals among their peers.
