BETHANY CHRISTIAN SCHOOL NEWSLETTER Term 1 - Week 9 7th April 2016 Newsletter Week 9 It is amazing to think that is our final Newsletter for Term 1. This Saturday is our Autumn Fair. We have had an amazing response from our community and will have 8 rides for a wide range of ages; show bags, hampers, sideshow alley, craft, an art competition, a wide range of entertainment on the stage, 33 community stalls and more. We also have a broad range of food options with Mexican, Memory Verse: All your children will have God for their teacher - what a mentor for your children! The Fair is open 10am-2pm with an ATM on site and eftpos available at the ticket booth. It will be an amazing day with our Parents and Friends going above and beyond with our staff to ensure that it will be a lot of fun for the whole family. We would love to see you there with your family and friends. Parent Teacher Interviews begin this week with the new process of booking online a great success. If you have not booked an interview, please contact the office to book an available time. We do love to catch up with all parents to talk about each student’s progress and to share important information together. Each interview is 10 minutes long so please arrive on time to ensure that your class teacher can continue to run on time for the evening. Next Term we will use the same email addresses to send out our Newsletter. This is a new initiative and will save a great deal of paper and time, which will be much better for the environment. If you do not wish to receive the Newsletter electronically, please contact Karen in the office on 8283 0000 to request a paper copy. Please remember that next Term begins on Tuesday 3rd May. The teachers will have a professional development day on the Monday so there will be no students at school on Monday 2nd May. OSHC will be available for your convenience on Monday 2nd May. The link for OSHC is on our Bethany website. In other exciting news, last week the development of the reserve behind our school went to Salisbury Council. I am pleased to tell you that the Council passed the proposal that includes a car park and kiss and drop roadway through the back of our school. There are still some details to be finalised but it is looking like this could be worked on in the second half of this year! Temple will also co-develop two soccer pitches that will allow them to have more oval space. It is very exciting to see this progress. The childcare centre has requested that I remind parents that their car park is for the childcare only. Please do not use this for school pick-ups. Thank you for your patience at pick-up time. I hope that you do enjoy the Fair this Saturday, the final week of Term 1, and then that you have a wonderful holiday break. God bless Wendy Matear Principal DEPUTY’S CORNER Master the Little – That was the theme for the National Young Leaders Day for 2016. The message for all of the speakers was the same: little things matter. In Mark Strom’s book, “Lead With Wisdom” he writes, ‘Small stuff matters.’ (2014, p.23) In his book, Mark uses a quote from Epictetus (a Stoic Philosopher), “Practice yourself, for heaven’s sake in little things, and then proceed to greater.” Some wise thoughts for us to reflect on! Here are some thoughts about the National Young Leaders Day from our student leadership group, Luminosity; “I think Nathan Dubsy Want was the best speaker as he told you to tell the truth because it will add up over time. Nathan said, “Little things add up over time which means you can do little things” which means you can then do bigger things. He said it’s not always easy but it’s worth it. It means to me that I should just do it. I think Nathan ‘Dubsy’ Want was a big inspiration.” - Bradley Perrina 6MC “Dylan Parker shows passion for what he does, then he shows more passion in making paper planes to become a world champion in engineering paper planes. Also followed by becoming a movie consultant for the movie, ‘Paper Planes’.” - Ashley Hei 6T “I thought that Dylan Parker was the best speaker because I learned the most from him.” - Gisele Cocks 6T “My favourite speaker was Dylan Parker because he was telling us a brave story about how he was rejected but never gave up.” - Atori Tran 6T “Dylan Parker was my favourite because he inspired me to be creative and to dream. He mastered the little which added up to something big (making a movie).” - Siarah Carter 6T “Dylan Parker was my favourite because he had a dream but it changed because 2 he took a different path and now he is a paper plane pilot!” - Chelsea Taylor 6T “My favourite speaker was Dylan Parker. I liked him because he never gave up even though he was diagnosed with a brain tumour and had to have a scary operation. He was in University and on one day there was a note on a board advertising a paper plane contest. He entered it and won. Then he was invited to compete internationally where he came third place.” - Natalia Czudek 6T “My favourite speaker was Dylan Parker because he told us about his story and his steps that got him to where he is now. He achieved the goal of being from an ordinary paper plane thrower to a guy who travelled across the world and came 3rd in an international competition.” - Annika Sipos 6MC “For me the best speaker is Dylan Parker because even when he had a brain tumour he didn’t stop making planes, he concentrated on the positive things. Dylan said that “mastering the little can result in big things”.” - Colin Vo 6H “Dylan Parker was my favourite speaker because he went on to be a leader and he followed his dreams on who he wanted to be. He taught us that it isn’t the big things that are so important but it’s in the little things.” - Eleni Karipidis 6H “Leonie was my favourite speaker because she talked about her world travels, and even when things were getting tough she Bethany Christian School Newsletter 2016 would persist and found a way of achieving things that seemed impossible. I also liked how she said, “Nothing is difficult it is just different”. - Mitchel Herbert 6H “I think that Dylan was the best because he was young and could connect to us. He was also talking about things that could happen to all of us because we can all have problems and we can try new things.” - Beau Thomas 6MC “I liked Manal Younus because she inspired me so much. I liked her stories that she told from her heart. She also taught us to be ourselves, to show our identity. She told us to strive for a difference, live your goal and your passion.” - Jamelia Mao 6H “I liked Manal because she talked about the tough topic of racism and she would talk about current issues through her poetry and this interested me. She taught us to follow our passions by doing the small stuff and to follow the passion in you.” - Shivali Chand 6T “The speaker who impacted me the most was Dylan Parker. He taught me that sometimes the small choices can have a big effect on your life.” - James Hester 6H “Dylan Parker inspired me by telling a story about himself and how he trusted and believed in himself. The main reason I was inspired was because he told a story that was easy to connect to and understand.” - Abbie Thomas 6H TERM 1 HIGHLIGHTS Chadson Chhan Jadon Webb Autumn Fair 4G Shayleigh Montgomery Pattana Peou 4WH Hudson Munzer Brandon Le Robinson Son 4WY We Need Your Help!
