Auburn looks to avoid one-and-done trend
BY JASON GALLOWAY

[email protected]
The losses couldn’t hurt much
worse than Auburn High’s firstround playoff games the last
two seasons.
In an overtime loss to CarverMontgomery in 2010, a fumble
on the Wolverines’ 7-yard line
squandered a chance for the Tigers to win the game in regulation. Last season was arguably
even worse, when Auburn took
a 7-point lead with less than a
minute to go before a botched
kickoff, a quick score and a 2point conversion had Duck
Samford Stadium wondering
how it had slipped away.
This season is about proving
these first-round losses aren’t a
new trend for a team that won
four in a row from 2006-09.
“They’re both games we probably should have won. We had it
at the end, we had a chance to
put it away, and we just didn’t,”
Auburn head coach Tim Carter
said. “It’s very difficult to sit in
here and talk about what we’ve
accomplished in a sense of failure because when you finish a
season 8-2, which we’ve done
the last two years, you’ve won
the majority of your football
games against good people.
“But the reality is, the playoffs
is a second season, and that’s
what we haven’t done well in.
My first four years here we won
our first-round game every
year, and some of those teams
weren’t nearly as good as the
last two teams that have lost in
the first round.”
Auburn will have to improve
with only seven returning starters.
Gone are talented running
backs Marcus Harris and Patrey Hardnett, most of the offensive line — including overpowering tackles Clay Machen
(South Alabama) and Caleb

Inexperienced Bulldogs try to rally together
BY JASON GALLOWAY
[email protected]
Opelika enters the 2012 season without a star player.
For head coach Brian Blackmon, that’s not necessarily a
bad thing.
In fact, he believes it’s a great
situation to be in.
“That’s the great thing about
this team — we don’t have an
elite, marquee player on this
football team today that we
look at and say, ‘This is our
guy,’” Blackmon said. “But
what we do have is 11 guys who
are all high-quality kids and
good ballplayers, so that they’ll
all play together and they’re
not concerned about one guy
winning the game for us. I
think we have a better chance
of success.
“Some teams, when you don’t
have that guy, they kind of rally
around each other and everybody’s expecting everybody to

Blackmon said he expects the
offensive and defensive lines
— which start seniors at every
position — to be the strength of
Opelika’s team and take pressure off some of the younger
players at other positions.
“Watching the past seniors, it
seems like when you become a
senior, you immediately take
over the role of being a leader,”
said senior offensive lineman
Jarrett Carson. “I think being a
senior now, I have to (lead) as
much as I can.”
Of the 13 seniors the Bulldogs
plan on starting this season,
only three started in 2011 as
juniors.
There’s something impressive
about that, Blackmon said. He
said his team is full of players
who are finally getting the opportunity that they’ve worked
year in and year out to achieve.
“When you look at the number of guys that we have starting as seniors that waited until
they were a senior to start, that
says something about the quality of their character,” Blackmon said. “Most guys nowadays, if they’re not a starter by
the time they’re a junior, they’re
looking for another school to
go to. These guys have hung
around and worked hard and
been given an opportunity.
“I think they’re hungry.
I’m really excited about seeing their progress as this year
unfolds.”

Red Devils hope to reload in 2012 season
BY JASON GALLOWAY
[email protected]
It’s not easy for a high school
coach when roughly half his
starting lineup from a year ago
is preparing to play on college
campuses.
It becomes even tougher
when one of those losses is a
quarterback getting ready for
his first season in the SEC.
That’s the challenge Central
head coach Woodrow Lowe faces heading into the Red Devils’
Class 6A-Region 3 title defense
in 2012.
Good thing the former NFL
linebacker had been anticipating the situation long before
this fall.
“Like I’ve always said and always will say, in the high school,
6A football in the state of Alabama, the thing that you’ve got
to remember is that it’s about
development,” he said. “You’ve
got to develop players to be
starters their junior year. It’s
about development.
“It’s kind of a revamping year,
but we had some good guys on
second team last year that are
coming along.”
When most high school players only have a one-to-two-year
window of relevant production,
Lowe understands there always
needs to be younger players
waiting in the wings.
There may be no better example of that than senior Cameron Fraser, the Red Devils’
6-foot-6 tackle who didn’t begin playing football until 10th
grade, started his first game last
season and has since committed to South Florida.
“It’s going to be difficult because most of (last year’s seniors) were leaders on this
team,” Fraser said, “but I think
we have a great young talent pool to pull from. We’ve
had a bunch of ninth graders
who have been playing with
us.”
Until those players break out
into contributors like Central

Growing pains over for confident Smiths Station
BY JASON GALLOWAY
[email protected]
It was hard to expect much out
of Smiths Station last season.
Looking at the facts — replacing 20 starters, playing a tough
schedule with plenty of tough
region games — it was difficult
to picture a scenario with the
Panthers in the postseason.
Like head coach Mark Rose
said, it could have been a disaster.
“I’ve been in this a long time.
I’ve never started a team that
young anywhere I’ve ever
been,” Rose said. “They took
what could have been a disastrous season, and they worked
so hard. We were one play from
the playoffs. We lost in overtime
to Dothan. If we win that game,
we’re in the playoffs.
“It’s obvious we weren’t far off
last year.”
Not only did the Panthers
avoid a catastrophe last year,
they played sophomores like
they were seniors and now enter
2012 wise beyond their years.
Two running backs that can
run 4.4 40-yard dashes, a quarterback now with 10 starts
under his belt, a leading receiver that was also the team’s
second-leading tackler and a
host of players who were keys to
winning two of three overtime
games in one season.
Those are some highlights of
Smiths Station’s class that just
began its junior season — a
time when most players are jittery about playing their first
meaningful minutes on a Friday
night.
“At this level, you’re never used
to guys getting experience until
their junior year,” Rose said. “It
sort of puts them experiencewise like seniors going into this
year. You can work out and practice and everything, but there’s
nothing like game experience,
so we’re excited about that.”
The players can see the difference.
Although they were confident

Rams try to regroup after coach steps down
BY JASON GALLOWAY
[email protected]
Matthew Wells’ job heading
into this football season was a
tough one.
He was Valley’s fourth coach
since 2008, was taking over
the program with only seven
returning starters and had to
navigate through a schedule
that included three Class 6A
teams.
Now, Marshon Harper’s job is
even tougher.
Since Wells took a leave of
absence last week for personal
reasons just five months after
being named the head coach
and athletic director, Harper
— who now takes over as the
interim coach for the season
— has to deal with all the aforementioned challenges on top of
regrouping a team that lost its
head coach just nine days before the season opener against
Auburn High.
But Valley, which plays Auburn, Opelika and Smiths Station this fall, still has high expectations once again in 2012.
To reach them, the Rams will
have to replace its entire offensive line, which was lost to
graduation.
Quarterback Josh Meigs returns, but the turnover up front
has given a fresh, youthful feel
to the offense.
The Opelika-Auburn News
was unable to reach Harper for
comment after he was named
the interim coach, but the OA News did talk to Wells about
the upcoming season before he
took his leave of absence.
“We lost almost everybody,”
said Wells, who was the co-offensive coordinator for the
Rams last season. “You think
that you go 9-3, you really don’t
have to rebuild a whole lot. We
were regional champions last
year, and we had a good team.
But we lost so many good kids,
it really is like a rebuilding situation.”
Early in the season, Valley’s

tough for Valley. Matthew Wells,
who was named the Rams’ head

March, took a leave of absence for
personal reasons last week and
will not return as the head coach.
That leaves Marshon Harper, a
long-time Valley assistant, to lead
a team that went 9-3 last season
but only returns seven starters.

New Tallassee head coach Mike Battles joined
the Tigers in February after four years of coaching at Bibb County, and after an offseason of

already getting acclimated to his new team.

there. Those are the guys
that are going to have to
step up and have some good senior leadership.
Any time you have a good offensive line the rest
of it tends to work out.”
Meanwhile, Battles is looking to younger players to put points on the board for the Tallassee
offense in 2012 and beyond.
“We’ve got a good senior class, but a lot of our
skill people are going to be sophomores and
juniors,” said Battles. “If you look to right now,
they’re good players. If you look to the future, we
hope they get to be even better players. That’s always a positive when you’re able to come in and
you’ve got a lot of guys you’re going to be able to
work with for two or three years.”
Tallassee returns both of its quarterbacks that
shared time as starters a year ago in Jed Scott
and Seth Golden, and stud wide receiver and
Division-I prospect Dijon Paschal is back in
the fold again as well. Battles hopes that those
returning players and a host of fresh faces can
make his first season with the purple and gold a
successful one.
“They’re hungry,” said Battles. “We’ve got a
good senior class, and they’re starting to show
some good leadership. This entire community
— the school and everybody — is just hungry to
get out there and win some ballgames.”

Hornets ready for 1-2 punch to start season
BY RYAN WOOD
Game Night Guide
[email protected]
Not long ago, the opening two
weeks of Beauregard’s football
schedule would’ve left the program shaking throughout its
offseason.
Even now, head coach Smitty
Grider knows his team is in for
one heck of a one-two punch to
start the fall.
First up is Handley, the defending Class 3A champion
after an undefeated 2011. In
Week 2, it’s Charles Henderson,
which has built a solid reputation in Class 5A over the past
few years.
“We need to play well early,”
Grider said. “That’s the biggest
thing.”
Grider admitted the Hornets’
schedule is tough early. But the
difference between this year
and the past, he said, is a mindset that the team won’t back
down.
Even if that doesn’t mean a
2-0 start, Grider said his team
has built the confidence to persevere. And, most importantly, Beauregard players battle in one-on-one drills during practice Aug. 9.

Success just part of Tigers’ culture nowadays
BY MIKE SZVETITZ
[email protected]
The culture has definitely
changed at Dadeville.
The Tigers’ accent up the 4A
rankings has been well documented. In 2008, they became
the first team in the history of the
AHSAA to go from 0-10 to 10-0.
Since that winless 2007 season, Dadeville boasts a 45-5
record, including back-to-back
12-1 seasons (2010 and 2011),
while reaching the third round
of the playoffs both those years
as well.
The Tigers have a four-year
home winning streak (34 in a
row), with their last loss at Tiger
Stadium coming against Elmore
County on Oct. 26, 2007. Also,
Dadeville has won 26 consecutive regular-season games, with
its last regular-season loss coming against Trinity on Sept. 19,
2009.
And because of that success,
Dadeville has not only been
consistently ranked in the top 10
in the state, it’s also putting out
a high number of quality players, including Auburn University signee Darrion Hutcherson
and current senior Rod Crayton,
who is ranked the 19th-best defensive tackle in the country by
Rivals.com.
It’s also helped in numbers.
This year, Dadeville head
coach Richard White said he’ll
dress out the most players he’s
ever had in his 13 years at the
school.
White said 116 players signed
up to play spring football — 88
finished. Some more dropped
off over the summer, but White
said they’ll have anywhere between 70-72 players on the roster this year.
“Success brings success,”
White said. “And that’s natural.
“When you win, (others) want
to be a part of it.”
This year, White expects the
winning to continue, even
though Class 4A-Region 3 has
beefed up a bit with the addi-

Dadeville has switched to a 34 defense to take advantage of
Crayton’s skill at nose tackle, as
well as to mask its lack of depth
on the defensive line.
“We can’t run a four-man front,

Players buying into new coach, mentality
BY JASON GALLOWAY
[email protected]
When Craig Hall took over as
Beulah’s head football coach in
March, he spewed confidence
when talking about turning the
Bobcats into a contender.
Forget last year’s 1-9 record.
Never mind about jumping
from Class 3A to Class 4A.
It didn’t matter that his new
team was now in the same region as powerhouses Dadeville,
Handley and Central of Clay
County.
And after five months on the
job, nothing has changed.
If anything, he feels even
better about turning around a
team that broke a school record
by allowing 436 points in 10
games last season.
“You’ve got to have expectations,” he said. “I’m going to say
it again — there is no reason
why Beulah High School cannot be a successful program. I
mean that. The kids are working hard, there’s enough athletic
ability for us to be successful.
“The administration, (Superintendent) Dr. (Stephen) Nowlin has made a commitment for
this program to be successful,
and he demands it to be successful. That’s why they hired
me.”
To be fair, last year was likely
not a great gauge of Beulah’s
potential.
The Bobcats’ season was littered with injuries, derailing a
team that was already extremely young and short on depth.
Heading into 2012, many juniors already have experience
as starters — including running
back Trevon Brown, who has
started since he was a freshman — and players have talked
about being more motivated
heading into this season.
“Everybody’s ready,” senior
defensive end Brandon Ewell
said. “They’re willing to do
whatever it takes right now to
be able to change (the culture).
It used to be everybody was

Rebels, Stewart looking for bounce-back year
BY TIM COTTRELL
For The Opelika-Auburn News
At most high schools,
an 8-4 season would be
cause for celebration.
Most high school aren’t
Reeltown.
“We had a lot of sophomores last year that
weren’t ready for the type
of ball we play and the
type of teams we play,”
head coach Jackie O’Neal
said. “They hung in there
and had a decent year.
Eight-and-four by a lot
of people’s standards is
a great year. By our standards and what we’re
used to, 8-4 was a pretty
bad year.”
Especially so when you
consider the Rebels were
coming off a three-year
run of 39-5, which included a state championship
(2009) and another finals
appearance (2010).
But the 2012 team features significantly more
experience, and O’Neal
is especially excited for
the return of halfback Tywone Stewart, who had
rushed for almost 1,000
yards in just more than
five games before going
down with an injury last
year.
“We were running the
ball exceptionally well,”
O’Neal said. “When he
went down it really hurt
our rushing attack. We
didn’t have that kid who
could make people miss
and make things happen in space. We’ve got
some other kids that can
do things, but he’ll be our
go-to guy.
“He’s had a great offseason. He realizes this
is it for him as far as high
school goes … so he’s
looking to have a breakout year.”

should have plenty of
chances to make things
happen.
The Rebels also caught a
break with Lineville moving out of the region after
combiningwithlong-time
rival Clay County to form
Central of Clay County, as
well as the exit of Woodland from the region, although O’Neal considers
it a mixed blessing.
“I like to play the good
ballclubs,” O’Neal said.
“(Woodland and Lineville) are the types of teams
you gauge your team
on. You learn a lot more
about your team against
those guys than when
you’re beating a team 400. When we played those
guys it was a great ballgame and a playoff atmosphere.”
Reeltown’s biggest area
of concern heading into
the 2012 season comes in
an unfamiliar place — the
defense.
“We’re looking for anybody to step up for us
on the defensive line,”
O’Neal said. “We lost two
great tackles (Ardarius
Kelley and Ladarius Denmark). We don’t have the
quality of players to fill
their shoes right now,
so we’re trying to do it
with numbers. Hopefully
as the year progresses
somebody will separate
themselves from the
pack. That was a point of
emphasis in the spring,
finding numbers. (Kelley
and Denmark) had been
playing three years for
us.”
However, O’Neal feels
the Rebels will be ready
to get back into the state
championship hunt after
a one-year absence.
“Overall, I think that
we have the potential to
have a good ballclub,”
he said. “I think we can
line up and play 11-on-11
with anybody. It’s going
to come down to getting
some depth.”
O’Neal will also be looking for leadership, and he
thinks he has the players
to provide it.
“It’s going to boil down
to Jestavia Norris and
Tywone Stewart,” O’Neal
said. “They’ve got more
on-the-field playing time
than anyone. Maybe Jayson Stephens and Jim
Parks are ready to step it
up this year, too.”

Senior-heavy Bulldogs chomping at the bit
BY MIKE SZVETITZ
Game Night Guide
[email protected]
When Steve Coker first got to
LaFayette prior to the 2010 season, he looked at his roster.
Sophomores. A lot of them.
But he knew once that group
— which played a lot that season on its way to a 1-9 record
— would only get better and
more experienced.
As juniors, they led the Bulldogs to a 7-4 record and their
first playoff appearance since
2005.
Now, with 16 seniors who
have been there since the beginning, Coker is expecting
bigger and better things.
“Those same guys were sophomores my first year and have
been coming up,” Coker said. “I
think experience was big in the
turnaround. And we’re hoping
for even more this year with
them as seniors.
“When I got here, I said if we
can keep all these kids healthy
and eligible, we knew we’d
have something as they got
older.”
Senior quarterback Quay
Boyd, who’s going into his third
season the starter, will be the
measuring stick for that once
inexperienced
sophomore
class.
Boyd hit his stride last season, throwing for close to 1,800
yards and 17 touchdowns while
rushing for more than 500 yards
and five more scores.
This year, Coker expects
more.
“He’s very versatile. We rely
on him a lot with his arm,” the
head coach said of his 6-foot-4
signal-caller. “He’s a big kid and
keeps play alive. That’s what we
rely on a lot.”
But it’s not just Boyd who is
expected to highlight the Bulldogs’ offense.
Senior wide receiver Joe Vines
will get plenty of opportunities
as well.
“Joe is also a big playmaker
for us,” Coker said. “He’s kind

Story expects ‘big things’ from Panthers this year
BY MIKE SZVETITZ

Cliff Story had declared a
team summer workout drill a
tie.
His players, however, wanted
a winner.
So Story, in his fourth year as
Lanett’s head coach, left it up
to his team to figure it out as he
walked off the field.
Then, Story stood in the
doorway to the Panthers’ locker room and watched as his
squad went back to work on a
tire drill, determined to declare
a victor.
“It was a proud moment
for me,” Story said. “In our
coaches meeting that’s all I
talked about, the fact that they
wanted to have a winner and
they weren’t just OK with a
tie.
“Because as a coach, you
want them to buy into what
you’re teaching them and you
want them to come together. It
put a smile on my face because
now they got it.”
It’s been a struggle for the
Panthers to “get it” since Story
arrived in 2009.

and 14 touchdowns, as well as
rushing for 491 and five more
scores — has answered the call,
according to Story.
And then some.
“I’m really expecting a lot
out of him this year,” Story said. “He’s been shredding it in 7-on-7 games this
summer.
“He’ll probably be player of
the year in this area if he stays
healthy.”
Story said he’s going to open
up the passing game more this
season, as he expects the Panthers to throw it some 20 times
a game, up from 10 the previous seasons.
And with four returning seniors on the offensive line and
two veteran wideouts, Story is
confident that plan of attack
will pay dividends.
Defensively, seven returning
starters are back, including all
but one defensive lineman.
“What I like the most (about
the defense), is they have really
developed a bond and a closeness,” Story said. “They really
understand the importance of
doing what we ask them to do
100 percent. And they’ve also
been able to get everyone else
to buy in.
“I’m expecting big things out
of the whole team.”

More experienced Indians ready for new season
BY MIKE SZVETITZ
Game Night Guide
[email protected]
Individual records have never
appealed to Jerome Tate.
In his 18 years at Loachapoka,
the Indians’ head coach has
never been about anything other than team and community
success.
Individual accolades are just
the byproduct of a successful
program — a team — not just
one man.
So as Tate sits just one win
away from win No. 126 — a victory that would break Smiths
Station’s E.L. “Moose” Godwin’s
all-time Lee County record —
the veteran coach cuts right to
the heart of hit true goal.
“If I could do just one thing
— if I could give the people of
Loachapoka a state championship — that would mean more to
me than any individual record,”
Tate said. “I’ve never thought
about any records, and that’s as
sincere as I can be.
“My main thing is, I’d love to
be able to say we put a trophy in
the trophy case for the people of
Loachapoka.”
Now, don’t misunderstand.
Tate’s not saying that this year’s
squad — which returns 12 starters from last year’s 4-7 team —
will win a state championship.
He’s not predicting that.
He’s just admitting what would
mean more.
“If I break a record this year,
I’m sure someone would come
along and beat it down the line,”
Tate said. “But if you win a state
championship, no one can take
that away. I’m not predicting a
state championship, or anything
like that, I’m just saying that
a state championship would
mean more to me because of
what it would mean for the people of Loachapoka.”
But the Lee County wins record would leave a significant
legacy at Loachapoka when Tate
eventually stepped down from
his post. And the fact that a new
coach would come in with the

what’s expected of whoever was
the coach at Loachapoka.
“And that’s what I want to
leave.”
Helping Tate get to that milestone win will be a team that he
says is hungry for success.
A team that’s older, wiser and
more experienced than last
year.
“The kids worked extremely
hard over the summer,” Tate
said. “There’s nothing like experience. Last year, we were very
inexperienced. At any given
time we had seven sophomores
offs by winning its last two games,
keeping the streak of postseason
appearances alive at 10 in a row.
Tate expects to make it 11 straight

“I think the kids didn’t want
to be the class that didn’t go to
the playoffs during that stretch.
Those two ballgames we had to
win to get in the playoffs were
the best games we played all
year.”
To make it 11 years in a row,
the Indians will have to rely on
their quarterback and their defense.
Senior quarterback Jywon
Moss, who is going into his third
year as the starter, will lead the
offense, according to Tate.
“He needs to step up more this
year,” Tate said. “He had an outstanding sophomore year where
he extended plays. Last year, I
think he tried to do a little too
much. He tried to put a lot on his
shoulders. This year, he needs to
take what the defense gives us
and do a better job of extending
plays like his sophomore year.”
Defensively, Tate is also expecting more.
“That’s been a big emphasis
with us,” the head coach said.
“I’m not going to sit here and
fool myself or fool anybody
else, but when you lose some of
the players we’ve had, we won’t
match up as athletically and as
talented as we used to, but the
guys are working hard to be as

“We have more experience

Four games into last season,
James Lucas’ team was 4-0
and seemed well on its way
to making his prediction of
a state championship come
true.
Things went downhill quickly.
Suspensions to four key starters and a series of injuries saw
Notasulga lose six of its last
seven games and finish with a
losing record.
“The team did good (in handling the adversity),” Lucas
said. “I think it was more of
a learning experience for the
coaching staff. It taught us we
have to have depth. At the 1A
level, there’s only so many guys
you can have, so you have to

Eagles look to duplicate success
BY JUSTIN LEE
For the Opelika-Auburn News
Ballard Christian head coach
Buddy Hammock would have
liked to have spent his time
leading up to the 2012 season thinking of how his Eagles
could continue their winning
ways in the ICSGA, but he first
had to figure out how to field a
team at all.
Even after a successful campaign a year ago, which saw the
Eagles finish near-perfect in
the regular season and 2 points
short of the ICSGA title game,
Ballard Christian’s return to
defend their region championship came into question when
the Eagles’ roster numbers
dwindled in the offseason.
“We dressed 21 last year,

and we ended up losing 12 of
them,” said Hammock. “That’s
pretty hard.”
The Eagles’ roster was gutted
when several players left for
public and private schools in
the area, on top of the usual at-
trition due to graduation.
Ballard Christian’s season was
saved when an 8-man team
from Phenix City, Georgia-Alabama Christian School, was
unable to field a team. A hardship waiver from the ICSGA allowed six of their players to join
the Ballard Christian squad, essentially merging the two teams
just weeks before the start of
the regular season.

Big changeover leads to opportunity for Wildcats

Springwood seemed to
be clicking on all cylinders
toward the end of last season, boasting a 10-1 regular-season record just a
year removed from a run
to the state title game.
That’s when the Wildcats were upset in the first
round of the playoffs by
Escambia, ending their
march back to the state
championship before it
could even get started.
“We had a good bunch,

the last game of the season and got a couple of

said Springwood head

and just were not effective
and we didn’t advance

lot of people thought we
would have a rematch

state title game), but it
just didn’t happen.”
Things might seem to
have only gone downhill for Springwood since
then as the 2012 season

Holt Ingalls couldn’t recall the
offense he ran as a sophomore
at Lee-Scott in 2010.
His mental lapse could be because it’s been nearly two years
since the wide receiver/running
back had to worry about its terminology and its demands for
perfect execution.
More likely, Ingalls chose to
erase it from his memory.
“We had the personnel for the
spread,” Ingalls said — referring to the offense the Warriors
switched to last season — before turning to teammate Caleb
Bethune, “and I didn’t like that.
… What offense was that? Triple
option? I didn’t like that.
“It’s just hard to run. You can’t
make any mistakes.”
It gives credence to a theory
Lee-Scott head coach Robert
Maddox compares to the movie
Field of Dreams — and that famous line, “If you build it, they
will come.”
Maddox has always loved the
triple option, but after realizing
through his team’s 3-7 season
two years ago that the Warriors’
personnel wasn’t big enough to
play that smash-mouth style,
he opted for something more
popular.
“I think high school kids today, it’s a perception thing,”
Maddox said. “If they feel like
they’re doing what’s being done
on Saturday, they’re kind of vicariously putting themselves in
a position where they’re playing
college football… If you give
the perception you’re doing
what colleges do, they’ll come
out for football. I’ve noticed an
increase in numbers of our kids
ready to play because of it.
“The same thing happened
when I was at Auburn High
School. My first year we had
37 kids out for football. Second year, we had about 50,
and then after that we went
from one offense to the spread,
and we ended up 85, 90 and

100, and look what’s going on
now.”
The bottom line, Maddox
said, is that kids like that style
and play better because of it.
Lee-Scott flipped its regularseason record from 3-7 to 7-3
after the switch to the spread,
and this year — with nearly every starter returning on both
sides of the ball — the Warriors
plan on being even better.
Senior MarQuen Mitchell —
who starts at receiver, defensive
back and also plays a touch of
quarterback — returns as LeeScott’s most explosive weapon,
junior Jeremy Johnson is back
behind center after a developmental sophomore year, twoway star David Ruffin returns
after a mid-season concussion
and Ingalls — who also starts
at defensive back — will play a
key part in that offense he undoubtedly prefers.
In all, 19 starters return, and
they’re motivated to make up
for losing three of their last four
games, including a first-round
playoff loss to Morgan Academy.
“I felt like we kind of peaked
early and just kind of fizzled for
whatever reason,” Maddox said.
“Usually a team gets better as
the year progresses. We soared
early and then we just kind of
glided after that. We must not
let that happen again.”
If this summer is any indicator, the Warriors likely won’t
have the same problem in
2012.
“This group has worked harder this summer than any group
I’ve had … probably since I’ve
been coaching high school
football,” Maddox said. “They
bugged me to come in and
open up so they could do extra

Gators desperate for their ‘next breath’
BY JUSTIN LEE
Game Night Guide
For the Opelika-Auburn News
This season, the Glenwood
Gators and head coach Jason Allen do not want to wait
around until the playoffs to
start playing championshipcaliber football.
Glenwood limped into the
postseason with a 6-5 regularseason record a year ago before putting together a run that
lifted the Gators all the way to
the AISA Class AAA state title
game.
With 19 seniors returning for
Glenwood, the Gators seem
poised to start things the right
way in 2012.
“It’s a different team, a different season and different
kids,” said Allen. “Hopefully
we won’t struggle during the
regular season as bad as we
did last year, especially early
on.”
A faster start could lead to an
even more successful season
for the Gators, who are hoping
to carry over some momentum
to this year from last season’s
run to the state championship
game.
“It does put a target on
you for other teams,” said
Allen.
“But at the same time those
guys that were here last year
and were a part of that and are
coming back, they understand
now what it takes to get there.
It’s a lot of sacrifice, a lot of
long hours, a lot of work, a lot
of film study. It’s a lot of things.
But this group understands
that and I think they want that.
They want to have that same
success.”
That desire for success has
been so strong for the Gators
that the Glenwood players and
coaching staff had to put it into
words. Written on bracelets
worn by players and posted
on signs around the team field
house are the words “Next
Breath.”
“What that means to us
