News from the Fringe June 2015 A Publication of the Minnesota Women’s Public Golf Association In this Newsletter • 2015 MWPGA Four-Ball • 2015 MWPGA Match Play • President’s Corner • Upcoming Tournaments • Four-Ball Results • Match Play Results • Spring Meeting 2015 MWPGA Four-Ball Our first tournament of the season was Championship the Four-Ball Championship. This two woman best ball event was held Saturday, May 16, 2015 at Tanners Brook Golf Course in Forest Lake. 140 women participated in this event – 40 in the AM shotgun and 100 in the PM shotgun. This year the weather cooperated – mostly sunny and warm! How many of us remember other Four Ball Tournaments where it was cold, rainy, and windy! It was an exciting finish with the two top Championship Flight teams playing 3 extra holes before a winner was determined. Continued on Page 3 2015 MWPGA Match Play This year’s MWPGA Match Play Tournament took place June 5-7 at Bunker Hills Golf Club in Coon Rapids, MN. It was great to see participation up from previous years, with 52 women competing across seven flights of play. The course conditions were excellent, as was the weather, making for a highly competitive and fun tournament for all. Matches across all three days proved exciting, with most decided in the last few holes of regulation and some requiring extra holes be played before a winner could be declared. Continued on Page 5 News from the Fringe Page 2 of 8 President’s Corner – Marion Holly The teams of Leigh Klasse/Olivia Herrick and Sarah Burnham/Raelynn Spears tied at 68, requiring a playoff, which went three holes before the Klasse/Herrick team won. We also had the extra excitement of a hole in one by Dianne Johnson on the 148 yard eighth hole. Congratulations, Dianne! It has been a busy spring, beginning with the spring meeting at Oak Glen Golf Course in April. We learned about the new MGA Women's Senior Tour, the Salute to Service Women golf event, and discussed the possibility of a proposal to unite women's golf under the MGA. The highlight was actually being able to play golf after the meeting. In May, the Four Ball Championship was held at Tanners Brook near Forest Lake. Congratulations, Dianne Johnson, on your hole-in-one at the MWPGA Four-Ball! More recently, the Match Play Championship was held June 5 through 7 at Bunker Hills in Coon Rapids. We had three days of beautiful weather. In the final match on Sunday, Sarah Burnham came from behind to win against Olivia Herrick 2 & 1. We had a total of 52 golfers in seven flights, which was a significant increase in participation from recent years. I hope it continues next year. Coming up on July 11 and 12, we have the Public Links Championship at Oak Glen Golf Course near Stillwater. Entries close at 4:30 on Monday, June 29. Oak Glen is a beautiful course with several holes with Brown's Creek flowing through them. Welcome and Thanks We continue to be so appreciative of the assistance provided to the MWGPA by Maggie Leland, MGA Women’s Golf Manager. She has been joined by Erika Schwalbe, this summer’s MGA intern. Please welcome Erika and thank both Maggie and Erika for their efforts when you see them at our tournaments! Upcoming MWPGA Tournaments The next tournament is the MWPGA Publinks Championship, scheduled for July 11 th and 12th at Oak Glen Golf Course. Entries close at 4:30 on Monday, June 29th.
