INAUGURATION AT THE CENTRE FOR EUROPEAN STUDIES
T
he Centre for European
Studies (CES), a branch of the
Jagiellonian University Institute
of European Studies, offers English
taught interdisciplinary MA degree study
programmes as well as undergraduate
courses. CES students get an exciting
opportunity to study the rapidly changing
world of European politics along with
learning more about European history
while enjoying Polish culture and
Kraków’s spirit.
This academic year the JU Centre for
European Studies began with an inaugural
lecture given by Dr Tatiana Fumasoli,
a post-doctoral fellow from the Centre
of European Studies of the University
of Oslo and member of the UACES
Collaborative Research Network on the
European Research Area. Listening to
her talk CES students could expand their
knowledge on the role of academia and
research in knowledge society.
Every year the Centre hosts students
from all over the globe. The 2014/2015
academic year has gathered 120 students
from 26 nation states, which is shown in
the table.

Currently, the Centre offers five
study tracks within the MA in European
Studies programme: EU Studies, Central
and Eastern European Studies, Central
and Eastern European Studies: Research
Track, Europeanisation and Governance
in CEE as well as Studies in the Holocaust
and Totalitarian Systems.
This academic year CES has
launched a new Research Track which
will allow students to put knowledge
acquired during their studies into
practice by taking internships in one of
the CES partner institutions. It is worth
knowing that the JU Centre for European
Studies collaborates with a number
of institutions and projects in Poland,
including the Kosciuszko Institute (a
think tank), the Villa Decius Association,
the Małopolska Institute of Culture, the
German Marshall Fund of the United
States (GMF) or New Eastern Europe (a
bimonthly). In addition, CES has been
part of various international programmes
and has agreements with several partner
universities, e.g. University College
London (International Master in
Economy, State and Society – IMESS),
the University of Glasgow (Erasmus
Mundus International Master in Russian,
Central and East European Studies), the
University of Kent (International Master
in European Studies/European and
Global Governance), the University of
Tartu (double-degree MA programme in
European Regional Studies), the Catholic
University of Portugal (double-degree
MA programme in European Studies/
MA in Governance, Leadership and
Democracy Studies) and Kobe University
(EU-Japan Advanced Multidisciplinary
Master Studies).
CES regularly holds winter and
summer schools that gather students,
researchers and those interested in
the subject. This academic year CES
welcomes applicants for its 2015 winter
school on Democracy, expertise and
power: the role of experts in modern
European societies and summer school
on Jews of Poland: History, Culture and
Memory (June 2015).
