Wojnar • ï ï ï ï ï ï ï ï ï ï ï • • ï INAUGURATION AT THE CENTRE FOR EUROPEAN STUDIES T he Centre for European Studies (CES), a branch of the Jagiellonian University Institute of European Studies, offers English taught interdisciplinary MA degree study programmes as well as undergraduate courses. CES students get an exciting opportunity to study the rapidly changing world of European politics along with learning more about European history while enjoying Polish culture and Kraków’s spirit. This academic year the JU Centre for European Studies began with an inaugural lecture given by Dr Tatiana Fumasoli, a post-doctoral fellow from the Centre of European Studies of the University of Oslo and member of the UACES Collaborative Research Network on the European Research Area. Listening to her talk CES students could expand their knowledge on the role of academia and research in knowledge society. Every year the Centre hosts students from all over the globe. The 2014/2015 academic year has gathered 120 students from 26 nation states, which is shown in the table. This academic year CES has launched a new Research Track which will allow students to put knowledge acquired during their studies into practice by taking internships in one of the CES partner institutions. It is worth knowing that the JU Centre for European Studies collaborates with a number of institutions and projects in Poland, including the Kosciuszko Institute (a think tank), the Villa Decius Association, the Małopolska Institute of Culture, the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) or New Eastern Europe (a bimonthly). In addition, CES has been part of various international programmes and has agreements with several partner universities, e.g. University College London (International Master in Economy, State and Society – IMESS), the University of Glasgow (Erasmus Mundus International Master in Russian, Central and East European Studies), the University of Kent (International Master in European Studies/European and Global Governance), the University of Tartu (double-degree MA programme in European Regional Studies), the Catholic University of Portugal (double-degree MA programme in European Studies/ MA in Governance, Leadership and Democracy Studies) and Kobe University (EU-Japan Advanced Multidisciplinary Master Studies). CES regularly holds winter and summer schools that gather students, researchers and those interested in the subject. This academic year CES welcomes applicants for its 2015 winter school on Democracy, expertise and power: the role of experts in modern European societies and summer school on Jews of Poland: History, Culture and Memory (June 2015). www/ces.uj.edu.pl Anna Melnyk, Centre for European Studies
