COUNTRY BLUESMAN JOHNNY LONG
BY JACK HADLEY
According to St. Louis bluesman
Johnny Long, “America needs a
revival.” The Delta Groove recording artist had a lot on his
mind and shared his thoughts
freely on a variety of subjects.
The man has a point of view
that resonates with many who
are concerned about where the
blues is heading. “I was influenced by Homesick James and
Sister Rosetta Tharpe. The old
blues artists talked about real
life, not just drugs and drinking.” Long talked about his early blues career, trying to play in
clubs with his brother, Claude.
“We were playing traditional
music by artists like Howlin’
Wolf, Muddy Waters and Elmore James.” But the St. Louis

SHOUTIN’
THE BLUES
BY TARRY UNDERWOOD
Hey Blues lovers! How about the month of June in Colorado?
The festivals were over the top. First was the Greeley Blues Jam
celebrating the 10th anniversary of putting on this festival. The Friday night kick-off
party in the streets downtown is an experience like none other in Colorado. From the
“to go” cup to the bands in the street to the bars full of live blues, it is a great time. That

of the American indigenous
ART FORM THE ",5%3

hosted another great festival in Winter Park with two days of bands from all around the
world. On the kid’s stage we got to see how far some of our “kids” have grown musically
since the first time we saw them on stage. The stage had quite a few newcomers this year
and it appears the future of the blues is in good hands. Things are just getting started!
We have a number of festivals coming up over the Summer and I hope to see you at one
or more of them. You can find them listed on our website. Thanks go out to all of our
incredible, hard-working volunteers that make these happen.
The Holler: There has been some discussion about eliminating the print
version of the Holler and going to a digital format that would be online only. I guess I
am somewhat nostalgic, but I like the hard copy. CBS members, I want to know
what YOU think. You can tell me in person if you see me, or e-mail me at
[email protected]. I look forward to hearing from you.

How many festivals can say they give back to their fans by
offering their best line-up ever with no ticket price increase
as a token of appreciation? The conservative answer is
probably not many but the only one that comes to mind of
this writer is Greeley Blues Jam (GBJ) that celebrated its
tenth anniversary. This year Northern Colorado’s premier
blues festival booked a staggering number of national-touring acts — ten — with leg-swinging, piano romper Marcia
Ball and swamp blues minister Tab Benoit headlining the
action-packed day. To present the plethora of bands with
minimal down time between sets, two main stages were situated at the east and west ends of the arena. GBJ honcho Al
Bricker explained at the outset that the committee booked
this bountiful of riches line-up to celebrate the festival’s
longevity but promised it would return to its regular format
next year with a fair share of local bands. Bricker went on to
say that proceeds would benefit Weld county flood victims.
It definitely was a day for blues lovers but it was also
a day not to be late. Israel’s, now short-term Denver residents, Ori Naftaly Band shot out of the gate with a bang,
not wasting any time to flex its sonic muscle. Vocalist Eleanor Tsaig had many questioning how she could wail with
the intensity of a Janis Joplin with such a tiny, skinny frame.
Oftentimes, she was equally as passionate as Naftaly was
during his sizzling guitar solos, feeling every note through
her body as if there was some inexplicable spiritual connection between them.
Reverend Raven & the Chainsmokin’ Altar Boys may
not make its hometown Milwaukee famous as the country
song says but it had to make it proud. The group rarely let
up on the throttle, instead building its cruising groove to
higher and higher heights with a sound that leaned 90 miles
south to the blues of Chicago.
If the Reverend had a lot of Chicago in its soul, Lurrie
Bell proved you didn’t have to look far to find the real deal.
Bell, a longtime Chicago mainstay and son of harmonicist
Cary Bell, didn’t export a band from the Windy City but instead enlisted the services of Denver’s own Delta Sonics led
by über-hip harp man Al Chesis. Amazingly, Bell and the
Delta Sonics played seamlessly together as they had been
for forever. Chesis followed guitarist Bell attentively, careful
not to overplay while ensuring that the show belonged to
its rightful owner. Delta Sonics’ Bob Pellegrino shied away
from taking any leads, even when offered, preferring to inconspicuously apply his razor-sharp rhythmic accents.

The award-winning Heritage Blues Orchestra (HBO) offered
an alternative to the typical fare by honoring different eras
of blues, everything from field hollers and dirges to gospel,
pre-World War II country blues and even material from New
Orleans. KUNC Nine Ol’ Clock Blues host DJ Marc Applegate summed it up perfectly: “They’re versatile and they do
it all well.”
While HBO was stimulating academically and intellectually, the California Honeydrops (CH), fronted by smiling
Polish expat Lech Wierzynski (trumpet/guitar), worked the
crowd with emotion and fervor. Like HBO, the charismatic
dance band had plenty of surprises up its sleeve, sometimes pulling out a bawdy Louis Armstrong-trumpet blues
piece, jump blues swing, Piedmont blues and even some
relatively decent funk. There was a lot about CH’s set that
gave a nod to New Orleans, especially the exhilarating version of Rebirth Brass Band’s “Do Whatcha Wanna.” Though
the group was slotted as a mid-act, many attendees glowed
about how the spellbinding CH was their pick of the day.

GJF MANAGEMENT
At the end of May, 2014, we headed to Brighton for the second annual Brighton Blues Blast,
a two-day event held indoors at the Armory.
Because we missed the first one, this was our first
trip to Brighton. We arrived early, located the Armory
and set out to find something to eat. We drove through
downtown, and spotted a sign for Mexican food, “La
Estrellita.” It was POURING down rain so we ran in
and found this place, in the basement. My skepticism
turned into delight once my food came. I fell in love
with the “Mayan” sauce, a jalapeno cream sauce. We
went back the next night, it was so good!
The Armory Performing Arts Center was another
surprise. The building was originally built in 1921 to
store arms and military equipment and also served as
headquarters for the Colorado National Guard. It has
been beautifully remodeled while retaining the original structure, with great sound, lighting perfect for
photography, and plenty of room for dancing.
The Austin Young band Kicked off the festival Friday night with their high-energy style of blues. In addition to Austin Young on guitar, the band features Forrest Raup on drums and Alex Goldberg on bass. It is
always a good time when these boys get together!
Headliner Marquis Knox is a twenty-three year
old with the knowledge and style of an old school bluesman on guitar and harmonica. Marquis learned to play
the guitar from his grandmother at an early age. His

debut CD, “Manchild”, recorded when he was just 16,
was nominated for a Blues Music Award for Best New
Artist debut. He has played with blues legends such
as B.B. King, Pinetop Perkins and Honeyboy Edwards.
The Delta Sonics featuring Al Chesis on harmonica
opened the show the second night. The band, which
includes Bob Pelligrino on guitar and slide, John Butler on bass and Kyle Borthick on drums recently won
Westword’s best blues band award.
Closing out the festival was Lil’ Ed and The Blues
Imperials. Lil’ Ed is the most entertaining, dynamic
slide guitarist around. He gets into the crowd, walks
on tippy toes and gets the crowd going. Chicago Blues
at its finest.

Sammy Mayfield at that time.” Other
Denver connections include stints with
Billy Tolles and Gene Bass. Long also
spent time in Chicago and opened for
major artists like Sugarcane Harris and
Harvey Mandel.
Johnny Long had more to say about
the blues today - and what can be done
to make it better. “People are too materialistic today. The older blues artists were
able to write provocative tunes, telling
stories about life. They didn’t get any
credit for that.” He also thinks blues societies need to be more involved. “When
blues societies were promoting festivals it
was a better situation.”
“I just want people to come to a
blues show and feel something. Shake
yourself! Tap your feet, clap your hands!
Move yourself!” Spoken like a true believer, a man on a mission.
Sometimes a phone interview can
be awkward and difficult at best. Johnny
Long made it easy. I felt like I knew where
he was coming from and he made it real
for me. Not a throwback but someone
who is continuing the tradition of soul
music called the blues. ‰
A dozen or so people gathered at the
home of Kai, Natasha, and Nina turner
on Saturday May 31 to help fix up the
back yard garden and Nina’s play area.
For those who don’t know, the family
suffered the loss of an infant son and
brother this spring, and keeping the yard
in order was a low priority. That changed
when Erica Brown organized a cleanup
day to make the grounds more welcoming to family and friends.
Several neighbors, relatives, and
CBS members pitched in, proving the
old adage that many hands make light
work. Jerry and Jackie Deall brought
their truck and a tiller; Mike and Amy
Golden brought a chain saw and other
tools; Phil Borcherding, Merrian Johnson, and I also pitched in a few hours of
work, laughter, and camaraderie. Longtime family friends Lewis & Floorwax
provided lunch for all with a gift certificate to a local BBQ spot. Several trips
were made to Home Depot for supplies,
there were a few cases of minor sunburn
and sore muscles. By the time we were
done, Nina said that she wasn’t sure how
to tell her friends that her backyard had
been transformed into the most beautiful
play area on earth – she didn’t want them
to feel embarrassed!
A little sweat, some barbeque and
a lot of music in the background added
up to a memorable day for all involved.
Volunteering feels just as good on a small
scale as it does on a large scale. ‰

MICHISSIPPI MICK
Tweed Funk has come up with a great live-in-the-studio
party record with “First Name Lucky.” Packed with
mostly original tunes written by guitarist JB Optekar,
the songs have a real nice groove propelled by a solid
rhythm section and funky horns. With soulful vocals
courtesy of Smokey, this band keeps it in the pocket
with a Memphis feel all their own.
“Divided” is a slow jam from the heart, thoughtful
and sweet. Smokey tells it like it is because he wants
his baby back. Don’t we all? Everyone gets a workout
on “Sugarfoot.” Non-stop funk with call-and-response
between Smokey and Jon Lovas (sax) and Kevin
Klemme (trumpet.) It really has the Stax-Volt urgency
that you associate with the best of Otis Redding.
The live feel of this recording works very well. More
bands need to do this, especially if you’re playing rootsbased music. Love this one. Get some Tweed Funk!
- JACK HADLEY
If you like raw, uncut blues you’ve come to the right
place. Rock-steady grooves from blues veterans Little
Mike (harp and vocals) and The Tornadoes sound real
good to my ears. This band really delivers “All The Right
Moves.”
Guitarist Tony O. Melio plays with real finesse. The
band gets down to business on “Problems.” He shines
on this “Shotgun”-like groove, playing rhythm and lead
lines that mesh perfectly with Little Mike’s tough harp
blowing. And, yes, these guys know how to shuffle.
Check out “Close To My Baby” and “I Got Drunk Last
Night.” You can understand why this band played for
years with Hubert Sumlin, James Cotton and Jimmy
Rogers, among others. Little Mike spits out ferocious
licks all over this recording, and pianist Jim McKaba,
bassist Brad Vickers and drummer Robert Piazza swing
with the best of them.
I always have an emotional response to great music.
The blues can lift you up, make you dance or move you
to tears. Blues 101, people. I can’t wait for the next release from Little Mike and The Tornadoes.
- JACK HADLEY
“Michissippi Mick” is an obvious labor of love from
Mick Kolassa. Excellent playing throughout, production
values and - much to my surprise - a great sense of
humor.
Did he say what I thought he said on “WPD” (White
People Dance)? Yes, he did. Kolassa has assembled a
stellar cast of musicians for this project, including
vocalist Reba Russell and pianist Victor Wainwright. He
wrote many of the tunes here, sings lead and plays
acoustic guitar. Kolassa has something to say about the
history and the future of the South on “Land Of The
Crossroads.” He sings the slow blues on “Baby’s Got
Another Lover” with righteous support from guitarist
Jeff Jensen, laying down cool blues licks behind him.
Brandon Santini blows serious harp on “Blowtorch
Love” with vocalist Redd Velvet delivering killer vocals,
funky to the bone. Victor Wainwright brings “Time Ain’t
On My Side” to a higher level with some terrific piano
playing.
I enjoyed “Michissippi Mick” quite a bit. And one
more thing: Kolassa is donating 100% of the proceeds
of this release to the Blues Foundation in Memphis.

REVIEWS
is the least blues and more hip-hop/pop, almost raplike but melodic; “Glitter Ain’t Gold is very contemporary. “Numb” may be my favorite track with a blistering
guitar attack and dark depth. Both “Please Come
Home” and “You Saved Me” bridge over to R&B and
Soul, even crooning. The CD ends with just Gary as a
foot stomping acoustic slide guitarist aka Robert Johnson singing a traditional country blues song, showing
Gary’s roots in the blues.

BLUES BYTES
Gary Clark Jr.
BLAK AND BLU
Warner Brothers Records
Gary Clark Jr. is a very ‘contemporary’ blues guitarist
and singer songwriter who shows a wide range of
styles and cross-genres with the blues. He just won the
prestigious BMA for Best Contemporary Male Blues
Artist of the Year and was nominate for Guitarist of the
Year. There is no question about his talent and originality, but traditionalists may not like the directions he is
taking the blues. I initially felt this way when I casually
listened to “BLAK and BLU” – but the more I listened
to it the more it grew on me. Gary is taking the blues in
exciting and fresh new directions that will bridge the
blues with other genres and bring it to a larger and
younger audience that, like it or not, is the “Future of
the Blues” and will “Keep the Blues Alive”.
I knew Gary was a great guitarist from his staccato
riffs to dark heavy grinds to slow burning torch. What
is impressive is his talent as a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. The songs are often almost poetic – with
structure and rhyme; but with very catchy lines. Ten of
the thirteen tracks are penned by Gary and two are cowritten with him. The title track includes lines form the
great poet Gil Scott-Heron and “Glitter Ain’t Gold
(Jumpin for Nothin’)” includes the great Doyle Bramhill
II. The only ‘double cover’ is the tasty, fresh interpretation of “Third Stone From the Sun” (Jimi Hendrix)/”If
You Love Me Like You Say” (Little Johnny Taylor) that
extends into a DJ-like section and ends with killer guitar work.
Gary plays guitar and sings vocals on all tracks. He
plays bass, trumpet, drums, congas, percussion and
programming on 4 tracks and a traditional slide
acoustic guitar on the closing track “Next Door Neighbor Blues.” Drummer J.J. Johnson, bassist Mike Elizondo (fuzz guitar, keys, percussion and programming
on four tracks) and keyboardist Zac Rae provide a tight,
professional core band. About seven additional musicians play horns, guitars, tabla and percussion, giving
the album a full, rich feel.
The CD opens with big horns and crosses into
blues/hip-hop on “Ain’t Messin ‘Round”; “When My
Train Pulls In” is a dark staccato guitar blues track; the
title track has a hip-hop, pop feel; “Bright Lights” ‘goin
to my head’ is tasty and catchy and getting stuck in my
head; “Travis County has a hard driving roadhouse
blues bridging to almost country-rock feel. “The Life”
I am REALLY excited about two new releases from DeChamp Records out of
Memphis, both of which are produced by 2010 IBC Winner Grady Champion.
The first is JJ THAMES “TELL YOU WHAT I KNOW.” Ms. Thames is described as
a “Mississippi Blues Diva.” She really delivers on vocals, providing a rich blend of
R&B, reconnecting the listener to the roots of Blues. All eleven cuts have a
deeply original sound and she is backed by Za very tight band,
including horns & harmonic to support her growling vocals.
The other release from DeChamp is EDDIE COTTON‘S “HERE I COME.” Those of you
who listen to Blues Legacy on KGNU Community Radio (shameless plug: Fridays
6-9pm mtn time www.kgnu.org) know that am not a big fan of the blues guitar
(go ahead and gasp), but I am wooed and wowed by Mr. Cotton’s skills. Born in Clinton,
Mississippi, a minister’s son, Eddie Cotton Jr. grew up singing and playing gospel
music in church. He studied music theory at Jackson State University in his
hometown of Jackson, Mississippi, then went on to serve as minister of music at
his father’s church. I am struck by the deep, soulful riffs heard on this release.
Every cut is an original on this CD and I hope we get to hear Eddie
live in Colorado in the future.
Also catching and pleasing my ears is a new release from Delta Groove,
TERRY HANCK’S “GOTTA BRING IT ON HOME TO YOU.” I LOVE a blues saxophone
and dang it, you just don’t hear enough of it. Mr. Hanck has a truly soulful voice
and his style of blues is upbeat & jumping. I hope to catch him live
someday as his music is original and addicting.
I DO love Blues piano and the latest release from
ROB RIO -“HARRY TONIC SENIOR” - (Boss Productions) is full of classics
& originals. Harry Tonic is a fictional character “born accidentally as the only
child of a hard drinking Polish traveling salesman and a beautiful Brazilian
mulatto torch singer.” Known as the “Boss of Boogie”, this one-time Boulder resident
(Rob Rio, not Harry Tonic) offers 18 cuts of originals and samplings from the great
American Songbook. As always, Rob brings his great boogie piano to our ears
and his extremely wry sense of humor to the keys. Facebook Me Baby is full of
very funny double entendres and brings
barrelhouse/boogie piano into our brave new world.
I always want to give a SHOUT out to all the ladies who are working so hard,
trying to make a living playing the Blues. Here is a short list of
some women to watch/listen for.

BEST SELF-PRODUCED CD CONTEST IS ON!
The Colorado Blues Society is looking for musicians interested in competing in the Blues Foundation’s "Best Self-Produced CD" (BSPCD) of
the year. Where the IBC is the measure of excellence for a band's live
performance, the Best Self Produced CD award honors artists that have
achieved excellence in the studio. Acts can be bands, solo acts, duo
acts, trios, full choirs or any other combination. The purpose of this
award is to assist Blues musicians in the pursuit of their professional
goals. If you are interested. eMail [email protected] for the details.
z
• The CD must have been released after November 1, 2013.
• Compilations are NOT eligible
• Only Affiliates of the Blues Foundation may submit entries
A panel of judges will evaluate the CDs on the following criteria:
1) Blues Content (is it a Blues recording?)
2) Musical Performance (Musicianship)
3) Audio Quality of the Presentation (Production Values, Levels)
4) Cover Art and Design (Professional Packaging, Ready for the
rack at your favorite music outlet?)
5) Credits and Liner Information (Informative, Professional)
Singer, band, society or local producer may produce the actual CD as
long as the performer is a singer, band or other individual entity.
Recordings with established or "known" producers within the industry
are eligible as long as the recording is on the artist's independent label
and not on an established national blues label. If a recording was produced independently but an established blues label has purchased the
master for distribution, the recording is still eligible until such time as
the established blues label releases the recording.
DEADLINE FOR THE LOCAL COMPETITION IS SEPTEMBER 20. THIS
WILL ALLOW US TO EVALUATE THE ENTRIES, SELECT A WINNER
AND GET 4 COPIES TO MEMPHIS BY THEIR DEADLINE (NOV. 1,
2014).
If you are interested in competing in the BSPCD please contact
[email protected] There is no entry fee, however you will need to supply CBS with 3 copies of your CD for the contest. If your CD wins the
local CBS contest, we will need 4 copies to send to Memphis for the
Blues Foundation Finals where the winner is announced during IBC
week in January.
Complete Blues Foundation rules can be found at:

Announcing the CBS School of Blues
Come Out and Play with Us!
Do you have musical skills and want to express yourself through the blues? Do you like to stand out in a crowd
or are you the kind of person who’d rather blend into a group? Would you like to play at one of the
weekly blues jams around Colorado? We can get you there!
CBS is proud to announce a new service for our members: The CBS School of Blues. Starting Monday,
September 8th, 2014, we will initiate our first two hour session of a “blues orchestra” for 10 to 20 people led by a local
professional. All skill levels from rusty old timers/absolute beginners to professionals are welcome to join us and make
some blues music together. This first school will meet every Monday at a venue on South Broadway. The first two sessions
for any attendee at any time are free so you the chance to check it out and see if it’s really for you.
After that it’s only $17/session. Attendance is flexible to meet your schedule.
The sessions include the history of the blues, the various styles of the blues, how it’s influenced rock n’ roll, blues song
structures and blues standards. In these sessions you can blend into the background when you like and take the lead when
you’re ready. Each session will be a creative expression of the players who make it that night. For example, we may have
three vocalists, one guitarist, two drummers and four harmonica players along with a sax. From that crowd we’ll find away
learn, practice and play great blues songs together. We’ll also have breakout sessions where smaller groups can form to
practice with each other and refine their technique before joining back with the larger band.
Here’s your chance to get out of your seat and MAKE the music you love. Help us create music in a fun setting with
supportive friends. For questions, comments or suggestions, contact Marc Wilson at [email protected]

Blues Jam

Continued from pg. 4
If CH wasn’t the buzz among
certain pockets of attendees, then super group Royal
Southern
Brotherhood,
featuring a star-studded
line-up of Cyril Neville,
Devon Allman (son of Allman Brother Greg Allman),
blues rocker Mike Zito and
drummer Yonrico Scott,
certainly was. The Brotherhood’s set was a guitar lover’s feast with the blistering
guitars of Zito and Allman
assaulting the senses in
a head-banging fashion.
It was good to be a rocker
again but RSB’s music was
more than just mindless
boogie; many songs were
rife with social messages. Elder statesman Neville looked hip as
always but he wasn’t the only focal point. Zito and Allman sang and
performed their songs as well, giving the rightful impression that
the Brotherhood is a collaborative one.
“But I feel fine, really,” Marcia Ball quipped in her brief acceptance speech of the Colorado Blues Society’s Lifetime Achievement Award. The queen of ‘Peace, Love & BBQ’ is always good for
a quick line and an entertaining show with this one being no exception. The band played all its favorites to a delirious crowd. Her rendition of “Louisiana 1927” had special significance to Weld country
due to its recent flooding. Unlike other versions of this oft-heard
song, this one closed with an eerie ending of a funeral march propelled by rolling snare beats. Then Ball followed the mournful
Randy Newman ballad with the perfect reveler anthem, the rollicking “New Orleans is a Party Town” written by Bobby Charles.
It brought that crowd up again while the band roared through the
rest of its set with tear-it-up solos from Ball and guitarist Mike
Schermer.
By now, GBJ would have been a good day by anyone’s standards but headliner Tab Benoit was captivating beyond belief. He
rocked relentlessly on “Why Are People Like That” and was immensely soulful on Toussaint McCall’s “Nothing Takes the Place
of You.” He even played a solo of Clifton Chenier’s “Hot Tamale
Baby” on muted strings to imitate the scrapings of a zydeco rubboard, getting all kind of pitches in the process. Another highlight
was when he brought up various members of Royal Southern

in
two iterations for
some
out-of-thisworld
jamming,
including a duet with
Cyril Neville, “Bayou
Breeze” with its catch
phrase ‘Don’t let the
water wash us away’
that also was very
Weld County apropos. Finally, Benoit
began winding down
his performance with
“Medicine”
where
he burrowed deeper and deeper into
the song’s innermost grooves, tranpreviously during the
scending anything he had done
late evening.
In the years to come, the Greeley Blues Jam will be assuredly
great thanks to its dedicated organizing committee but this year
was off the charts.
