Alfa Romeo Selection of the
Car Name: An Alfa Romeo Competition 4C – The accents look great!
Month for October 2014.
Recent Events:
The Florida Alfa Club’s Annual Picnic and Car show was held on Sunday October
12th at Fort DeSoto Park at 11:00AM at shelter #3!
Florida Alfa Club & Fort DeSoto
This year’s Picnic and car show was a great success with a good turnout, great
weather, and plenty of beautiful and rare Alfa Romeo’s in attendance.
Here is Ruggero & Carla Santilli’s Alfa Stradale TZ3 & winner of the car show.
Tied for second are John Picot’s 74 GTV and Delmas Greene’s 56 Giulietta Spider.
The awards ceremony presenting to Ruggero & Carla Santilli the first prize plaque signed by Sophia
Loren (honest) and a nice bottle of Italian wine made in Naples (Florida actually) for their exceptional
Alfa Romeo TZ3 Stradale. Presenting the award are Harmon Heed and John Rady.
Featured Article: Here is an article written by Delmas Green on his recent experiences driving the rare Alfa
Romeo TZ3 (9 of 9) that made an appearance at the FAC’s annual Picnic. I too was lucky enough to ride in the car
for a short distance although most of the ride was sideways!
Santilli’s Alfa Romeo TZ3 By Delmas Greene
I was able to take a short test drive in Ruggero and Carla Santilli’s TZ3 at our Ft. DeSoto Car Show/Picnic
on Sunday, October 12th.
It’s the car that they had built by the Zagato manufacturing facility near Milano, Italy. Andrea Zagato
has found “good luck” in the number 9, therefore, only building a total of 9 cars in a series. While
visiting the facility in September of 2012, the Santillis contracted to have TZ3 #9 built for themselves. A
request for the project to be completed in time for the March 2013 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance
was granted and the TZ3 arrived from Italy just in time to be one of the highlights of that event.
The Italian designed chassis and body has the powertrain of the newest Dodge Viper. Needless to say, I
was a little hesitant to push the limits of the power. For a large car, I was a little surprised at the snug fit
getting into the driver’s seat. Once in, it was quite comfortable. After a few basic instructions from
Ruggero, I pushed the “start” button and the car roared to life. I found the clutch foot pressure much
lighter than expected and the shifter was smooth and easy. The clutch came to life a little higher than
anticipated but easy to get use to. I was soon on my way, and after only a few moments behind the
wheel, I felt very comfortable-noticing how sensitive the steering wheel felt in my palms. I certainly
couldn’t do any “performance” driving on public roads, but I did get to do a couple “red line” sprints in
the lower gears. As expected, it had really impressive acceleration. Thank you to Ruggero and Carla for
a chance to drive their unique Alfa Romeo TZ3!
Recent Event: A tour of Dave Wilson’s Car Collection and Parts Hoard!
Concerned about his recent health issues, long time Alfa enthusiast and resident of St.
Petersburg, Dave Wilson is actively seeking to sell his extensive Alfa Romeo collection of
cars and parts in part or as a whole. Every time I visit his place I am amazed at the amount
of things he has collected over the last 50 years, and he is still buying cars and parts as
recent as last month to the chagrin of his lovely wife. While I have already submitted my
paper work to be adopted by Dave and his wife (just kidding-sort of), I always bring him
and his wife a nice bottle of Mario Andretti Cabernet when I visit and tell his lovely wife to
make sure Dave shares it this time. Dave’s garage and warehouse are little bit like “Alice’s
Restaurant”, everything is for sell except Dave!
An Adventure at Dave’s World
On Thursday morning, October 9th, Frank Mann and Harmon Heed went to fellow FAC
member, Dave Wilson’s to purvey his extensive collection of Alfas. They met at “the barn”
where Dave keeps ten Alfas. It’s a clap board walled building with a corrugated steel roof.
Scripted big and high up on the outside of the western wall is the word Studebaker. Ninety
years ago it was the home of a Studebaker car dealer’s service shop. It still has the vintage pin
up girl posters on the wall to prove it.
Inside were ten Alfas, including Giulia TIs, a Super TI, three 1982 spiders that Dave has
put “wide mouth” grills on and a 67 Duetto that he had duoposto head rests built on the body
behind the seats. The white ’82 spider had towing hitch brackets up front, semi stripped for
racing and on the hood were Dave’s racing red and green stripes and snake. Dave, sitting in a
chair in shorts with a bottle of Becks in one hand and a stogie in the other, regaled Frank and
Harmon with his racing tales of back in the 1950s – 70s.
Next stop was a two car garage Dave rents two of miles away. Three quarters of the
garage was stuffed with stacks of wheels and tires. Chromadoras, and other styles both street
and racing we stacked everywhere. In the other quarter is a 67 GTV that the body has been cut
off and stripped to bare metal. It sits on a roller dolly, stripped clean to the metal and the clips,
doors, hood and trunk are surrounding it.
Last stop was Dave’s Tudor style house and his home garage. He built the house and
garage years ago, garage first of course, so he could house his Alfas. The ground floor is
crammed, packed. On the ground floor sat a 67 Alfa GTV step nose complete in primer. On
shelves along the walls were engines and trannies, about twenty of each. And there were
starter motors, seats and mats, some like new.
Up some narrow stairs in the back, littered with small parts, was the second story
packed with more parts. Dozens of valve covers, oil pans, GTV window trims and Duetto
bumpers hanging from the rafters, two restored dashboards, tonneau covers and, in the desk
drawers, an apoplexy of instruments . . . tachs, speedos, clocks, temp and pressure gauges. And
Dave knows which everyone fits on every car!
Frank and Harmon weren’t shopping but were surprised at the prices Dave was asking.
They both thought he was a bit euphemistic about the condition of his cars and parts.
However, he did say he got asking price for three cars he sold this year. And, like FAC member
John Picot who bought a GTV hood from Dave said, “He’s got the parts we need.”

Exciting News: A New Meeting Location for the Florida Alfa Club!
Starting in October the Florida Alfa Club has an exciting new meeting place for our monthly
Business meetings. It will be held at the Yard of Ale Gastro Pub on 2675 Ulmerton Road in
Clearwater, FL 33762 (PH: 727-800-9872). The location is huge offering a variety of rooms for
our use with a great menu or reasonably priced food and an extensive list of drinks as the name
implies.
In our first meeting at the Yard of Ale, we found ourselves in their spectacular Wine Room with
its coffered Copper ceiling, chandeliers, and walls covered with wine bottles and wooden casks.
The service was quick and courteous, and the food was great and reasonably priced. It made for
quite an experience. Please join us for our next meeting, November 13th and see for yourself.
Directions to the Yard of Ale: Look for the Big Red Alfa Romeo Banner out front
For those members from the Sarasota south you will find this new location much closer
and easier to find. If you are coming from the south simply take I-275 North and get off
at the Roosevelt exit and bear right onto Ulmerton Road headed east. Make a U Turn at
the first light and it is immediately on the right.
If you are coming from Tampa just head south on I-275 and take the second exist after
the Howard Franklin Bridge and head west on Ulmerton Road. It will be on your right.
If you are coming from the beach or the northern counties you can take the Bay Bridge
south to Ulmerton and head east. It is located on the left after you go under the Roosevelt
over pass. Or you can come down Hwy 19 until Ulmerton and head east towards I-275.

Dear Auto Enthusiast:
Viva Alfa Romeo Car Show 2014 is the twelfth of Mid Florida AROC’s annual Viva Alfa Romeo
Car Show and Parade.
This gala event, scheduled for November 15th, is strictly for Alfa Romeo, Fiat and Lancia
automobiles of every year and model.
The purpose of the event is to strengthen the bonds of fellowship among all participating
Alfistis and Fiatistis, to recognize those who have striven to maintain autos of rare design or
condition and to provide a venue where we may display the virtues of our autos to the general
public.
The site we have chosen is Market Street, in the heart of downtown Celebration, Florida. The
town has agreed to cordon off the main block of this beautiful busy street as our show site. The
town of Celebration has been highly publicized and draws visitors from around the world. The
location is ideal for attracting a large number of spectators during the entire time of the
exhibition. Following the show period, our cars will be driven along a parade route through
Celebration. We look forward to a great time together.
Those who participate by exhibiting their Alfa Romeos during the show will receive a welcome
bag of memorabilia and will be eligible for awards based on judging.

More Business: Advertisers & Recommended Shops
If you know of a body or paint shop, dealer or service provider that you would recommend and
would like to share with the rest of the Alfa Romeo World, this space is available for them to
advertise at very reasonable rates. As owners of vintage Alfa Romeos we all have stories of the
car that went in for a paint job only to be left sitting endlessly and eventually held for hostage, or
the mechanical shop that caused more oil leaks than the car came in with. Send us your list of
shops that you are proud to recommend to other Alfa owners and help us spread the word.
With the upcoming introduction of the new Alfa 4C and the fleet of Alfas to follow it, many of
our local Fiat-Alfa Dealers are gearing up for the new 4C’s introduction. The Florida Alfa Club
has offered to help promote these 4C introduction events by bringing several of our Vintage Alfa
for display during the dealer’s events. If you have an Alfa-Fiat dealer near you that would like us
to participate as well by bringing our cars to their kickoff events, please ask them to contact us
here for scheduling. Also mention to the dealer in your area that advertising here reaches a
targeted market of Alfa Romeo enthusiasts already sold on the brand and a valuable source for
potential future Alfa customers.
If you are organizing a car show or an event and you would like the Florida Alfa Club to
participate in your event by either bringing out several unique and pristine vintage Alfa Romeo’s
for display at the car show, or our membership to participate in a charity drive and/or similar
event, feel free to contact us here. You can also advertise your event here as well. Contact us
directly on how to do that and for a list of reasonable rates.
