Crew a sailboat factsheet
TRAVEL WITH CHRIS BROWN CREW A SAILBOAT Is it possible to take to the seas and sail a yacht around the world without paying for it? It is if you’re willing to work for the experience. Chris finds himself a free holiday on board a thirtyeight foot yacht – the only catch is he has to become a deck hand during the trip. Crewing a sailboat is a great way to see the world without shelling out a huge amount of money and websites like 'Find a Crew' help would-be 'Yachties' pair up with boat owners looking for crew. Chris jumps on board the 'Psycho Puss' for a sail around the Whitsundays to try it for himself. WHITSUNDAY ISLANDS The Whitsunday Islands are a collection of continental islands off the central coast of Queensland, Australia. The island group is officially charted as the ‘Cumberland Islands’, and is centered on Whitsunday Island. Presently there are resorts on Hamilton Island, Daydream Island, Brampton Island, Long Island, Hayman Island, South Molle Island, Hook Island and Lindeman Island. Indigenous tribes are thought to have roamed the islands for around 8,000 years before European settlement. The most historically dominant tribe were known as the Ngaro people, a nomadic group whose territory expanded across the entire island chain. These indigenous Australians are one of the earliest recorded and established peoples in Australia. The islands’ first documented European history began in 1770 when Captain James Cook sailed through them on his journey up the Eastern Coast of Australia, naming the “Whitsunday Passage” after the day on which he sailed through it, Whit Sunday. The Ngaro Sea Trail Great Walk is a mix of seaways and short walks, crossing South Molle, Hook and Whitsunday islands. The tracks across the islands are linked by seaways suited to kayaking, sailing or power boating. Several islands have large resorts, offering a wide variety of accommodation and activities including camping. The Whitsunday islands are now a popular tourist destination for travellers to Queensland and the Great Barrier Reef, with the area being one of the most popular yachting destinations in the Southern Hemisphere.
