February 2016 Newsletter
The Transmitter The newsletter of the Jersey Coast Sport Fliers AMA Club #1265, est. 1973 www.jcsportfliers.org Rob Kallok—Editor 732-263-1561 email– [email protected] Address—18 Bampton Place, West Long Branch, NJ 07764 February 2016 I didn’t get a chance to snap a pic of the recent snow at the field, so I thought this vintage pic from a few year’s ago would do the job. After a very dry, snow-free early winter, we’ve been having a fairly steady stream of snowy days. If you have skis for your plane, now is the time to get out and have some fun, as it’ll be spring before we know it (Wahoo!) However, it’s not all glum and gloom this time of year. For example, next weekend is chock-full of fun. The WRAM show is coming to the Meadowlands from Friday 2/26 through Sunday 2/28. And that Saturday 2/27 is our annual Club Dinner - a fantastic combination of fun events! Be sure to check out both—and if you haven't yet sent in your dinner reservation there’s still time! Please see Stu at this month’s Club meeting, or drop him a note at [email protected]. Please be sure to reach out to him ASAP as we need to get in the order to the restaurant. Recording Secretary’s Report By Darryl S. Our January Meeting was held on the 27th at the ELKS Club in Red The WRAM show is upon us. Feb 26th thru 28th @ The MeadBank. 18 members attended. owlands Exposition Center. See you there. Jake Mauger penned the meeting minutes in my absence. Stan entertained all with his dollar store collection of props, neatly laid out on a table (until gusts propelled them for km’s) at the flight line. Stan’s Rules outlined a scenario in which puzzles, drawings, clothing embellishments and physical activities were to be completed for additional points, once you put your plane into stable flight in 20+ MPH winds. Points multiplied when you faced the parking lot while gyrating and/or dressing! Seems easy I thought as I trimmed my plane in the gusts and faced the parking lot with jump rope in hand. I had to abandon my attempt at winning the coveted BRASS MONKEY ‘cause when I looked down I was afraid I would slip in the frozen goose s—t! d The Exec Board is Listening! In response to membership we have revised our 2016 Calendar adding more open club flying days with eats and sport flier points awarded. We limited funflies to one a month during the peak season. We still included our picnic, AMA day or sanctioned Norm Hills electric event. You know that Spring is nipping at your keister when it’s time to attend the JCSF Annual Awards Dinner. This event celebrates the beginning of the flying season and recognizes those who participate, accelerate, pontificate, instigate and legislate the events of the best RC Club this side of the Pacific! Soooo -- please come out and celebrate with us on Feb 27th at 6pm @ Park 33 Restaurant. See Stu for a ticket to the dinner and/or chance to win the grand prize! Hope to see you there. On Jan 31st the Nassau Fliers is sponsoring the Levittown Flea Market on Long Island. Free Admission. Stan spoke about the FAA regulations and how they apply to RC. Gary Swist II won the Corsair Raffle Prize Now is the time to renew your AMA and Club Membership and don’t forget your FAA DRONE # d SPRING PLANNING It’s a tough time of year—it’s generally too cold to fly, but we want to do something airplanerelated. Thankfully there are things we can do to keep our skills sharp and get ready for the flying season. Let’s check it out! Flight simulators. Rather than let the old thumbs get rusty, check out one of the many excellent flight sims that are out there from Realflight (Hobbico) and Phoenix (Horizon) that give you the ability to keep “flying” right through the nasty weather until decent spring weather appears. If you take the time to use these great tools maybe you can even pick up a few new skills! it’s now! Did you put your battery collection into storage mode this winter? It’s not just your transmitter and receiver batteries any more, now you have to think of the myriad of flight batteries you have as well. Now is the time to do some cycling to see what is ready for the flying season and what’s ready for the recycling bin. And don’t forget—you want to store you NiCads totally discharged and your LiPoly packs at 50%. Keeping then in the refrigerator (not the freezer) will also help keep them in good shape. This way all you have to do is give then a charge cycle once the warm weather arrives and you’ll be ready to go! Check out one of the many RC auctions in the area.
