AUDIO CONNECTORS
Jack Inputs
JACK (Unbalanced Analog Audio)
A jack plug is an extremely common audio connector. The terms phone plug (U.S.), and
phone jack for the corresponding socket or jack, are also used for these connectors, especially for the original 1/4” size. Phone plugs were originally used in telephone switchboards.
They can be found in the 2-contact version (mono, also indicated as TR [Tip, Ring]) and in
the 3-contact version (stereo, also indicated as TRS [Tip, Ring, Slave]). The 2-contact version
is universally employed for the connection of musical instruments, of effect processors and
of mixers (unbalanced line). The 3-contact version is used for stereo headphones, for insert
combined sockets and for some balanced lines. Modern jack plugs are available in three
standard sizes. The original 6.35 mm or 1/4” version, dates from 1878, for use in manual telephone exchanges—making it possibly the oldest electrical connector standard still in use.
The 3.5 mm or miniature and 2.5 mm or subminiature sizes were originally designed as twoconductor connectors for earpieces

Minijack Inputs
XLR (Balanced Analog Audio)
This connection is found extensively on the pro side and on many high-end amps and
preamps on the home theater side. It usually utilizes an XLR connector. XLR connections use
a large plug with three prongs and a locking mechanism. One prong is the positive signal,
another prong is the negative signal (180 degrees out of phase with the positive signal), and
the last prong is a ground. When subjected to electrical noise, the noise will be present on
both the positive and negative leads, canceling itself out and leaving only the original signal.
How cool is that? While they’re most often used for analog audio, XLR connectors are sometimes used for professional digital audio connections using the AES/EBU standard.
SPEAKER
It features a quick-locking system with options for soldered or screw-type solderless for easy
repair in the field. Line connectors only mate with (male) panel connectors (not with other
line connectors) and typically a cable will have identical connectors at both ends. If it is needed to join cables a coupler is used (which basically consists of two panel connectors mounted
on the ends of a plastic tube). The Speaker connector is an alternative to 1/4”, two-pole twist
lock, and XLR connectors for loudspeakers. Many consider Speaker connector to be superior
to 1/4” because of its ability to lock the plug to the socket preventing the speaker becoming
disconnected by movement or other forces. Additionally, it provides a fully-insulated connection to equipment, eliminating electrical shock risks associated with high power audio
amplifiers. There are three versions: 2-contact (for amplification), 4-contact (for bi-amplification) and 8-contact (for quad amplificaton) versions.

CONNECTIONS GUIDE
RCA
An RCA jack, also referred to as a phono connector or CINCH/AV connector, is a type of analog electrical connector which is commonly used in the audio/video market. The name “RCA”
derives from the Radio Corporation of America, which introduced the design by the early
1940s to allow phonograph players to be connected to radios Since the signal-carrying component protrudes from the plug, it has the disadvantage of coming into contact with the
plug before the grounded rings meet, often resulting in loud hum or buzz if the audio components were powered while making connections. As with many other connectors, the RCA
has been adopted for other uses than originally intended, including as a power connector
and as a connector for loudspeaker cables. Its use as a connector for composite video signals
is extremely common, but provides poor impedance matching.
DIN
Once they were universally used in hi-fi, before being permanently replaced by RCA connectors. At the moment their usage is limited to M.I.D.I. cables for the transmission of musical
instruments digital protocol and to some control cables for analogic dimmers (Strand Lighting) or for DMX signals transmission.

Optical
This one’s sometimes called Toslink. A unique connector in the home theater world, it uses
laser light instead of electrons. The cable is a thin strand of glass or plastic that carries information encoded as a series of pulses from a red laser. It delivers an optical signal that is most
often in the form of S/PDIF (Sony/Philips Digital Interface Format) digital audio, which natively carries just two channels of uncompressed digital audio or multichannel compressed
Dolby Digital and DTS audio streams, with no support for DVD-Audio or SACD. While there
are arguments as to which connection scheme sounds better—coaxial or optical—in the
reality of most home theater systems, you’re not going to hear a difference.

Firewire
IEE1394 cables (also known as FIREWIRE or iLink) represent a two-way, digital interface that
can carry digital video and/or digital audio, as well as machine-control signals.. Thanks to
their performance (data transfer rate: 400 Mbps), they are ideal for multimedia applications
(Audio/Video, DVD, Digital Camcorder, etc.). All Bespeco IEE1394 cables are made with double shielded cables.

Ethernet Input
Ethernet
Ethernet is a frame-based computer networking technology for local area networks (LANs).
The name comes from the physical concept of ether. It defines wiring and signaling for the
physical layer, and frame formats and protocols for the Media Access Control (MAC)/data
link layer of the OSI model. Ethernet is mostly standardized as IEEEs 802.3. It has become the
most widespread LAN technology in use during the 1990s to the present, and has largely
replaced all other LAN standards such as token ring, FDDI, and ARCNET. RJ45 (Registered Jack
45) is a physical interface often used for terminating twisted pair type cables. “RJ” stands for
Registered Jack which is part of the United States Code of Federal Regulations. It has eight
“pins” or electrical connections per connector. Shielded Twisted Pair (STP) is a type of twisted
pair cable in which the pairs are enclosed in an outer braided shield, although individual
pairs may also be shielded. STP most often refers to the 150 ohm IBM Type 1, 2, 6, 8, & 9 cables
used with Token Ring networks.

USB (Universal Serial Bus)
USB cables represent the connection standard between digital devices and computer. Thanks
to them, it is possible to connect PC & Mac® accessories, video-cameras, MIDI modules, mixers, etc. with the great advantage of hot-plugging and the possibility to cascade-connect up
to 127 devices. All Bespeco USB cables are made with double shielded cables and are available in the USB 2.0 version (data transfer rate: 480 Mbps).

VIDEO CONNECTORS
RCA Inputs
RCA
This is a ubiquitous connector that is used for multiple audio and video formats. Also known
as a phono plug, it’s simple and cheap, but it has its limitations. Most often used for analog
audio, RCA-style connectors are used for composite video, component video, and coaxial
digital audio connections. Just because the connectors match doesn’t mean the cable does.
You shouldn’t use audio cable for video signals, and vice versa.
Coaxial Inputs
S-Video
Also called Y/C, this is a big step up from composite. It separates the luma from the chroma
and, therefore, eliminates any chance of composite-based artifacts. The most common
connector has four pins. Two pins carry the actual signal; the other two act as grounds.
Coaxial Digital
It’s one of the two main ways to get digital audio from a source (say, a DVD player) to a
receiver or pre/pro. It delivers an electrical signal that is most often in the form of S/PDIF
(Sony/Philips Digital Interface Format) digital audio, which natively carries just two channels of uncompressed digital audio or multichannel compressed Dolby Digital and DTS audio streams, with no support for DVD-Audio or SACD.
BNC
This is a bayonet-style connector named after Paul Neill and Carl Concelman, and it is found
extensively on pro gear and on some high-end home theater products. This is the best type
of analog connector. It twists to lock. No more pushing and fussing with connectors in the
dark recesses of your equipment rack. Find the connector, twist the sleeve, and you’re done.
Also, it exhibits the correct 75-ohm impedance for video, unlike most RCAs.
CONNECTIONS GUIDE
Component
Also called Y/Pb/Pr, this is the only type of analog connection that can handle decoded HD.
Although component inputs are often color-coded as red, green, and blue, this is not exactly
the information that each cable sends along. The green cable is labeled “Y” and carries all
of the luma (black and white) information. This is actually mostly green, with just enough
red and blue to make the image appear black and white. Because our eyes see more detail
in black and white, this is where most of the video information (and detail) is located. The
blue and red cables (Pb and Pr) carry color-difference signals. For example, Pr is the red information that isn’t included in the Y signal. Some consumer equipment’s component outputs are labeled Y/Cb/Cr, which is the digital form of component. This labeling is technically
incorrect, as, at the output, the signal is analog, which is Y/Pb/Pr, not the digital Y/Cb/Cr.
Although the label may be wrong, the signal is the same in this case. Component cable is
most often used with RCA connections and, less commonly, with BNCs.
SCART
SCART (from Syndicat des Constructeurs
d’Appareils Radiorécepteurs et Téléviseurs) is a French-originated standard
and associated 21-pin connector
for connecting audio-visual equipment together. It is also known as
Péritel (especially in France, where
the SCART word is not normally used)
and Euroconnector. The signals carried by SCART include both composite
and RGB video, and stereo audio input/
output, as well as support functions.

DVI
Digital Visual Interface was originally designed to connect digital computer monitors
to video cards. It was adapted (much to many
users’ dislike) for similar use in the TV world. It is a
bulky connector, but it offers the chance of better
picture quality, as it doesn’t have to convert the video signal from digital (the DVD), to analog (through
the component output and cables), and back to digital again (in the TV). It carries the same video signal as
HDMI but doesn’t carry an audio signal. It may or may
not include Digital Rights Management information
(HDCP, or High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection).
HDMI
High-Definition Multimedia Interface carries the same digital
video information as DVI. It was designed from the outset to
contain Digital Rights Management information like HDCP. It
can also carry up to eight channels of digital audio through a
single cable with a fairly small connector. You can adapt between
HDMI and DVI using a simple (and fairly inexpensive) adapter
plug (although you lose HDMI’s audio).
