monster trucks - Carlisle Events
WELCOME
ED SCHOLLY, EVENT MANAGER
I
t is our pleasure to welcome and assist all the truck
owners, vendors and sponsors in presenting one of
the best truck events in the country. In addition to trucks
of all kinds represented on the Carlisle Fairgrounds this
weekend, you will find Monster Truck shows, live music
and truck product offerings about the grounds.
We are pleased to welcome a number of big trucks
this weekend. Big Foot and Backdraft Monster Trucks
will be performing, along with a few showings of Megasaurus. With thanks to Progressive Insurance, Elizabeth
Truck Center, aka ETC and Kenworth of Pennsylvania,
we anticipate a nice showfield of big rigs that includes
the American Truck Historical Society showcase.
You will find no shortage of fine trucks on our judged
showfields and club showings about the grounds, but
we try to feature a niche of the truck hobby each year.
In recent years, you have seen trucks featured in mud,
as rats, as rods and armed to the teeth like the Vietnam-era gun trucks. This year’s feature is Vans. Look
for a showing in Building Y this weekend thanks to the
ideas, interest and support of Customvan.com and the
many Vanners on site this weekend.
We are happy to welcome the Light Truck Accessory
Alliance (LTAA) to the event this weekend. This industry association for the light-truck product markets will
showcase the latest products available for light trucks,
Jeeps and SUVs. This includes demonstrating product applications as they transform a stock Jeep into a
show Jeep during the event.
Many of the products shown and demonstrated
by the LTAA will be here and available for purchase
through vendors on our midway and swap meet.
Show truck or daily driver, this is the place to shop for
vehicle accessories. You can get exhausted with A&A
Auto Parts and industry-leading exhaust manufactures, pick up new wheels and tires from Dick Cepek
and Mickey Thompson and so much more.
Enjoy the Carlisle Truck Nationals!
JIM’S 1972 CHEVROLET K10 CHEYENNE SUPER 4X4
W
elcome to the Carlisle Truck Nationals. This is the
largest truck gathering of its kind in the U.S., so if
you’re into classic, modern, custom, lifted or dropped
rigs, you’ve come to the right place. This weekend is all
about celebrating the vehicles that were designed to
work for a living.
If you’re a car person, chances are you already know
that you can’t do much without a pickup. All it takes
is one greasy swap meet transmission in the trunk of
your wife’s car to prove that point in Technicolor.
I grew up around trucks. My dad always maintained
that you couldn’t expect to own a home without owning a truck. When I was little, he found a ’75 Chevy
1-ton that had been left for dead and brought it back
to life. It then towed boats, hauled gravel, appliances,
mattresses and firewood, and years later, went with
me to college as my driver.
So when I bought a house, the first thing I did was
buy a truck of my own — a ’72 Chevrolet K10 Cheyenne Super 4x4. For me, it’s a restoration project, an
all-weather driver and a mobile work bench. I see it as
the perfect thing to facilitate all the other jobs on my
to-do list, even if the biggest project I have to complete is the truck itself.
Over the past few years, the classic-truck market has
exploded in popularity — more so than any other segment. The American market has warmed to them on
a grand scale, and we’ve watched values rise accordingly, especially for great-condition original rigs with
rare options. At American Car Collector, we take an indepth look at a special truck sold at auction in every
issue, and we cover many more in our market report
section. Check out the special introductory offer card
in this directory. And above all, enjoy the show this
weekend!

American Car Collector Editor

UNIQUE TRUCKS ON DISPLAY
Check out a great display from the Clarion County
Career Center in Shippenville, PA. This group is responsible for six customized
trucks. Obtained via donation or loan, the Diesel Technologies class, composed of
15- to 18-year-old students, tears down the truck to its
frame and build it back up. As an added bonus, trucks
are customized and shown at the Mid-American Truck
Show in Louisville, KY. Following the show, trucks are
either returned to their owner or sold, with proceeds
going back into the school. CCCC, their students, instructor and at least three rigs will be on display in the
big rig area this weekend.
AMERICAN TRUCK HISTORICAL SOCIETY
The not-for-profit society was
formed to preserve the history of
trucks, the trucking industry and its
pioneers. We are pleased to welcome
the Susquehanna Valley Chapter and
their showcase of vehicles. See them
near the Pavilion. More on PAGE 30.
MILITARY TRUCKS
Gun Trucks invaded the
Carlisle Fairgrounds in 2010
along with our neighbors at
the U.S. Army Heritage Center. We are pleased to welcome military trucks as part
of the Carlisle Truck Nationals. Those who
join in this showfield class are eligible for
awards and recognition of their military
vehicle.
SVT CELEBRATES 20 YEARS
SVT celebrates 20 years of providing high-performance vehicles to the Ford
lineup. We are pleased to
welcome the SVT Owners
Association along with Dave
Dempster, former SVT engineer and contributor on
Ford’s prototype “Lightning Bolt” Ranger on display
in Building T. Dave is a Ford engineer and was there
when SVT transplanted a 2002 SVT F-150 Lightning,
supercharged 5.4L 2V engine coupled to a 4R100
transmission into this Ford Ranger. Join Dave and the
SVT Owners Association for a walk-around, talk-about
and Q&A of the SVT Lightning Bolt Ranger and SVT.

GENERAL HIGHLIGHTS
dustry. Everyone should be
familiar with their Build-Off
creation, “The Beast,” which
they believe revolutionized
the way the industry looks at
custom trucks. Since then, ETC has gone on to further
impress with a makeover of a classic 1980 A-Model
Kenworth, aptly named “Bride of the Beast,” an overthe-top urban assault vehicle, G-UNIT, transformed
from a showroom-new 2006 Peterbilt 379, the restoration and finely detailed rebuild of a vintage 1966
Peterbilt. “The Punisher” is one of the most incredible
Kenworths on the road, and there’s an outrageous,
off-the-hook, custom International ProStar, “Mayhem.”
And let’s not forget “The Predator,” imitated but never
duplicated. Who would want to see that bearing down
on them in their rear-view mirror? The fun never stops
at ETC; they’ve always got something new, or two, in
the works. They showcase their builds at a handful of
shows each year, accompanied by their mobile chrome
shop. They enjoy getting out and meeting the people
that keep the wheels turning every day.
MODERN MUSCLE MOTORSPORTS •••••••••••
These modern automotive performance enthusiasts specialize in modifying
and tuning today’s highperformance, fuel-injected
vehicles. They will be on
site, offering dyno testing. Don’t be afraid to ask them
what you can do to get more out of your truck or SUV.
MANUFACTURERS MIDWAY,
SWAP MEET & CORRAL •••••••••••••••••••••••
Visit our partners on the Manufacturers Midway, find a truck in the Corral and shop the
Swap Meet. You’ll find new product manufacturers, vintage accessories, parts and memorabilia. Vendors are listed by specialty and alphabetically in this directory. Title transfer services
are offered at the Notary Office in the Pavilion.
Financial services are available through Orrstown Bank, inside of Building T.

MONSTER TRUCKS
BIGFOOT ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
This year the monster truck fun will be super-sized
with the most iconic monster truck of them all — Bigfoot. Bigfoot, created by Bob Chandler, is noted as the
first monster truck. What started as a promotional tool
for his partner’s and his Midwest Four Wheel Drive
business evolved into a fleet of trucks recognized
worldwide. The original Bigfoot debuted in 1979 at a
car show in Denver, CO. Its popularity yielded numerous appearances thereafter, sold millions of dollars in
merchandise, spawned nearly 20 versions of the truck
and is so rich in history that Bigfoot’s biography spans
three pages on its web site.
With driver Erik Tack and Bigfoot 14 scheduled to
appear, it’s a given that this iconic machine will pack
the house.
BACKDRAFT ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
The term “backdraft” can mean an explosive event
resulting from rapid re-introduction of oxygen to combustion in an oxygen-starved environment Or, it can
relate to a smoking-hot monster truck coming to Carlisle. We’re turning up the heat in 2012 with Backdraft.
Its Dodge body, fire truck design and fire engine red
paint scheme is guaranteed to excite children of all
ages. Backdraft is a member of the Monster Jam circuit
and is primarily driven by Jeremy Slifko. The truck and
driver have extensive experience at performing in front
of crowds that enjoy high-flying excitement, enginerevving power and car-crushing dominance. Slifko will
take his Dodge monster over the cars, around the circuit and wow the audience with unmatched power!
MEGASAURUS ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
Fresh off an appearance on ABC’s “Extreme Home
Makeover,” Megasaurus, the transforming robotic dinosaur, is here to excite kids and parents alike. Megasaurus stands three stories tall, weighs over 50,000
pounds and has 15,000 pounds of crushing force in
each claw. It is sure to bring heat to the monster truck
show by breathing flames and eating every compact
car he can find. If you’ve never seen Megasaurus in person, you will not want to miss this show! FRI. & SAT. ONLY
MONSTER TRUCK RIDES••••••••••••••••••••••
Climb aboard the iconic Virginia Giant Ride Truck
to experience the power and car-crushing action of
a monster truck. This truck is the only one of its type
that takes you over the cars. Board behind the stage.
Fee applies.

years. Since its inception, the club has evolved,
changing with the times. To date, club members
come from all walks of life and span several generations. Within their circles, they are more than
just a club, they are a family with an unwritten

eaturing a niche of the truck hobby with each Truck Nationals event has
been a common staple of the Carlisle Truck Nationals. In recent years you
have seen clean trucks, dirty trucks, rat trucks, rods trucks, military gun trucks
and many more. One of our truck show vendors, Customvan.com, reached
out to us this year, calling for the Carlisle Truck Nationals to feature Vans in
2012. With the help of Customvan.com and many Vanners, we are pleased
to to welcome Vanarama to the Carlisle Truck Nationals. Building Y and surrounding field will feature vans, van classes, van vendors and more.

e sure to check out the world’s largest street-legal 4x4 truck, IronRevenge, in the midway area. This
massive ride is making a journey out of it too, traveling from the Orlando area to Carlisle before venturing further north next weekend to the Bloomsburg Nationals powered by Carlisle Events. IronRevenge
is an International Navistar CXT and sports an exceptional custom interior, complete with air ride seats,
drop-down TV screen, navigation, accent lighting and fold-down sleeper. This truck is custom from top to
bottom and dwarfs any standard daily driver, built as a testament to American Ingenuity. It’s a must-see-tobelieve type of machine, and there won’t be a bigger truck here this weekend.

PRESERVING THE TRUCKING INDUSTRY
T
he not-for-profit American Truck Historical Society was formed in 1971
to preserve the history of
trucks, the trucking industry, and its pioneers. The
American Trucking Association officially recognizes the
ATHS as the “duly authorized organization founded
to record and develop trucking industry historical data.”
Today, the ATHS has more than 21,000 members, with
1974 KENWORTH – Tim Kauffman
1974 KENWORTH – George Lapp
1976 KENWORTH – David Alexander
110 of them being part of the Susquehanna Valley
Chapter chartered in 1992. Members of the Susquehanna Valley Chapter agree on one thing — old trucks are
fun! This chapter hosts a truck show at the Kenworth of
Pennsylvania dealership in Carlisle every August and a
Tri-State show in Winchester, VA, every September. They
will be here this weekend showcasing some of their vehicles. We are pleased to welcome them to Carlisle and
hope that you will take the time to visit their display, ask
questions and learn more about the American Truck Historical Society. Look for their showcase around the pavilion in the big-rig area this weekend.

VENDOR SPOTLIGHT: ED BEARD JR.
BY MIKE GARLAND
H
ow easy is it to draw? Can you draw a stick
figure, circle or square without much of an
issue? If so, you are better off than most. Figure
that art is a talent, and whether it’s freehand,
pencil, crayon, graffiti, airbrush painting or one
of the numerous other forms of art, the person
attached to the hand that is creating it has a
unique skill set.
At the Truck Nationals this weekend, you
have a chance to interact with and witness the
talents of Ed Beard Jr. Beard, an enthusiast who
has been an artist for more than 30 years, has
perfectly blended his passions of art and automotive.
“I have been an artist for so long, but I can
still remember during my sixth- or seventhgrade year when it really hit me that I was
good at it,” Ed said. “Around 10th grade (1979), I started to use the airbrush to be able to create automotive
murals to put on the guys’ cars in automotive shop
class. They would ask me to create firebirds for their
TA’s and other fantasy images on their hot rods. That’s
where I got my first taste at automotive art.” Ed continued by saying that “I worked nearly exclusively with
automotive art until 1989, when I needed to step away
for health reasons.”
You see, the chemicals associated with Ed’s airbrush
work were making it hard for him to breathe so he
turned to water-based paint and began a career in
publishing. Ed has worked with Hasbro/Wizards of the
Coast, Dungeons and Dragons, and has more than 100
published illustrations with the world’s most popular
card game, Magic the Gathering. Ed does dragons and
does them well! His works have been licensed on over
1,000 products, and his “brand” has appeared in just
about every language and country worldwide.
In 2010, a friend suggested to him that he should
return to the automotive airbrush world and try a new
water-soluble paint. This new water-based paint was
strong enough to hold up on cars and was chemically
safe enough for Ed to work with from a health standpoint.
“I figured I’d give the new water-based paint a whirl
because I could sense the publishing world was changing. Many aspects of it were becoming digitized, and I
got to a point where I needed to figure out how I can
keep painting and on what,” Ed said. “Before I became
a dinosaur in the publishing world, I decided to combine my love for cars and my hand-painted-airbrushed
skill sets where the public still appreciates tangible
REAL art and not just the virtual reality world of online
games and non-tangible products. To the custom automotive owner, their car or truck is a work of art, and
they want nothing but original hand-painted art and
not a virtual facsimile or a vinyl wrap on their baby.

With Ed and his airbrush reunited, he took his fantasy art talents to a completely new level and that,
in part, is what brings Ed to Carlisle this weekend. Ed
owns a 2000 Dodge van, and it was his daily driver for
many years, getting him to and from gigs nationwide.
After 240,000 miles, he and his wife began looking at
a new vehicle but got to the point where they did not
want to put money into it. Finally, Ed decided to refurbish the van, build up the motor, make it “his.”
Around the same time, Ed noticed a renaissance
in mural work, and as he was rebuilding the van, decided that he wanted to have something cool to ride
in, something that looked good and rode even better.
Because of this, Dragonlord was born!
“I knew the paint job was going to be a full wraparound and I wanted to do something that hasn’t
been done before,” Ed said. “I have something in every
section of the van, even muraled the inside doors and
dash. After 921 hours of labor which began January
21, it’s done.”
The artwork was completed during the first week in
May, and Ed and the van were on its maiden highway
voyage. Considering the talent and time behind the
project, many of the people on the roads next to Ed
and the van were taking a second and third look, actually causing traffic slowdowns. Because of that, Ed
laughed as he said, “I have to drive in the slow lane to
avoid causing an accident. Everyone is looking at the
van and that’s great, but it’s really backing things up.”
In being the most successfully licensed dragon-andwizard fantasy artist with the most diverse selection of
products using his art in the world, Ed looks at what
he does as a hobby more than a job. “It’s been very
cool to be able to consider what I love doing as a job.
Now I’m looking to do some higher-end automotive
mural projects each year which will keep me healthy
and happy!”
