BERLINER PHILHARMONIKER VISITS THE CENTRAL COAST?
Central Coast Conservatorium Cnr. Georgiana Terrace and Mann Street, Gosford www.centralcoastconservatorium.com.au Email: [email protected] Phone: 4324 7477 Fax: 4324 2440 Issue : Term 3, 2010 BERLINER PHILHARMONIKER VISITS THE CENTRAL COAST? Yes, it’s true! During November, the world-renowned Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra with eminent conductor Sir Simon Rattle will be touring Australia, and between performances at the Sydney Opera House, four members of the orchestra will be travelling to the Central Coast to work with the Conservatorium Youth Orchestra and chamber music groups. The Youth Orchestra will also play host to students from other regional conservatoriums in NSW who will be joining in on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The Youth Orchestra have selected two works from the Berlin Philharmonic’s concert programme for their tour, the last movement of the 2nd Symphony of Johannes Brahms, and the 1st and 2nd movements of Haydn’s Symphony no. 99. The visiting BPO tutors will use their experience with these two works to guide our young musicians, who will be performing works in their own right as part of the programme for their end-of-year concert in December. Following the workshop, students from two of our Chamber Music classes will be performing in the foyer of the Sydney Opera House during interval of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra concert on the evening of Friday November 19th. Students are also being given the opportunity to attend an open rehearsal earlier in the week for one of the BPO concerts at the Opera House. Futuremusic - the Conservatorium’s exciting new Musical Comedy, set in the year 3010 and created entirely by students and tutors of the Conservatorium. Minor keys have been banned by an oppressive regime to “protect” citizens as they may trigger “excessive” emotions! This year’s show is also featuring a songwriting competition for young songwriters and the winning entries will become part of this year’s performance. The production will be rehearsing at the Con throughout Term 4, with performances on Saturday November 20th at Liberty Family Church. Success! This year’s annual Big Day Out for the Conservatorium’s Schools Programme was a huge success, with over 180 students participating in all across a wide variety of woodwind, brass and percussion instruments. Students spent the day with specialist tutors at Challenge Ranch, Somersby working on a number of pieces, including one for the beginners group written especially for this year’s event by coordinator Philip Rutherford. At the end of the day, the students had an open rehearsal to play for their parents to show what they were able to learn in the space of one day. Phil said “Big Day Out 2010 was another great success in cramped conditions, with more students than ever participating, but everyone had lots of fun on the day”. Following on from the successful workshop with members of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in early June, the Youth Orchestra put their lessons into practice with their mid-year concert on June 25th. The orchestra performed the two works that the SSO tutors worked on—Beethoven’s Creatures of Prometheus overture and the Russian Easter Festival Overture of Rimsky-Korsakov. The orchestra also played the Overture to Nabucco by Verdi, completing an unusual trio of Overtures, one from a Ballet (Beethoven), one from Opera (Verdi), and one Concert Overture (Rimsky-Korsakov). During the July holidays, a group of seven woodwind students partook in a two day HSC Music preparation workshop run by David Dallinger. Over the two days the students participated in performance workshops on their HSC program including working with an accompanist, music listening and analysis workshops focusing on a variety of genres in regards to the concepts of music, all culminating in a final performance concert to ready them for their HSC performance. It was a great two days of music, covering every possible aspect of the HSC Music course, giving them invaluable practical preparation for both halves of their course, readying them for their listening exam and their instrumental performance. Celebrating Chopin’s 200th Birthday 2010 is the 200th anniversary of the birth of Frédéric Chopin, and as part of the Conservatorium’s “Celebrating Chopin” weekend in November, visiting pianist Gregory Kinda will be presenting a recital on Saturday November 13th at 2.30pm featuring a number of Chopin’s piano works, including Etudes, Mazurkas, Sonatas, Ballades and Scherzos. For all woodwind players who wish to have their yearly service and/or repairs with Di Gardiner, here are a few things to keep in mind. The best way to get you instrument to Di is through Macron Music (Fountain Plaza, Erina). Please allow 3-8 days for turn-around time depending on the time of year. If you are waiting for the school holidays, please bring your instrument in at the beginning of the holidays to be sure that it can be done in time for the next school term.
