The PKP Newsletter • October 2011 - July 2012 Over $100,000 Raised for New Respite Center BOARD OF DIRECTORS Bill Brumsickle, President Gregory Mohoric, Past President Isaac S. Pope, MD, President Elect LauraLee Zuber-Titus, Vice President James A Phillips, Treasurer Cheri Lewis, Secretary MEMBERS AT LARGE Tom Boehme Kaci Jones Warren McLeod Jan Millam Andrew Toynbee John K. Walpole Alicia K. Wicks EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Frank Millwood Serving Kids from Lewis, Grays, Mason, Pacific, Pierce, Thurston, & other Counties. At the Fraternal Order of Eagles State Convention Awards Dinner held June 14th at the Red Lion Convention Center in Yakima, WA; it was revealed that approximately $102,000.00 had been raised to date (including matching funds) for a new Respite Center at Pope’s Kids Place. A very emotional Dr. Isaac Pope spoke to the guests present and thanked Ivan Wilson (WA State Eagles President), Charlene Butterfield (WA State Eagles Auxiliary President), the Eagles and their Aeries and Auxiliaries statewide for their extraordinary efforts, achievement, and caring. “We are deeply honored that you have done this.” he said. The next day, to delight of the Auxiliary Delegates, Dr. Pope rode into the Reports Meeting on the Pope’s Kids Place Throne (pictured above), a one of a kind donation receptacle. The Fraternal Order of Eagles and Auxiliaries' chose Pope’s Kids Place as their statewide charity for their 2011/2012 year for the purpose of helping to construct a new Respite Center. A larger facility is greatly needed as there is not enough space in Vivian’s House to meet all requests for respite when many families need it most. In addition to raising funds for the construction of a new respite center, the Eagles along with the Auxiliaries have educated people statewide about Pope’s Kids Place. They also donated toys, candy, bibs, blankets, and books for the kids. On numerous occasions they brought special guests to tour the PKP Campus. Pope’s Kids Place is deeply grateful and sincerely honored to be chosen as the 2011-2012 FOE Charity Organization. It has been a great year! Pope’s Kids Place appreciates and welcomes your support. All her meals and snacks are made fresh daily. Rebecca likes to “sneak in” vegetables, additional flavors, and added nutrition to recipes. She does this she says, so that the kids will try new things, as well as receive the fuel that they need to learn and grow. When cold and flu seasons are around, she’s also mindful to add additional fresh vitamin C. “It doesn’t hurt”, she says, “and it might help!” The kids think her cooking tastes great and they look forward to eating. One said to her recently about her steamed broccoli, “You need to give my mom this recipe!“ The preschool’s favorite menu items are green salad, corn, homemade pizza, chicken broccoli rice casserole, zucchini, muffins, carrot pineapple bread, and baked potato turkey vegetable casserole. The Teacher and staff often tie into the anticipation of a favorite food Rebecca is preparing. A day’s lesson plan could include “cooking” projects involving tasks such as measuring ingredients, scooping & pouring, following directions, taking turns, counting & number recognition when following a recipe, cooperating with others, and washing hands. At mealtime the focus is on table manners; such as friendly mealtime conversations, using utensils, taking “adventure bites”, being excused from the table, scraping your plates, and cleaning up after yourself. ter ning Cen r a e L y l 6, Ear ds Place ½ through age i K ’s e p s2 y. Originally from the other Rochester (Rochester, New York) she came to Washington to retire after 37 years of pediatric practice to be nearer to family. However, she couldn’t stay retired and began looking for part time work. After learning about Pope’s Kids Place from the WA State Dept. of Health, Dr. Klein became interested in the mission of PKP, its clinic, and the community it serves. Her expertise has been invaluable this past winter and spring as the medical clinic has experienced back to back and overlapping flu seasons, an allergy season, and a The PKP Med pertussis ical Clinic serv children from es all (whooping Birth throug h age 18.
