The Spirit of St. Mary’s December 2012 A publication of St. Mary’s Foundation St. Mary’s Foundation’s mission is to improve and enhance services provided for patients and residents of St. Mary’s Health Care System and to ensure these services are available to those who need them most by providing opportunities for giving to the community. Compassion, Care, Integrity and Faith Dear Donors and Friends of St. Mary’s, I want to take this opportunity to say thank you to all our many donors, supporters and volunteers! You are vital to our ongoing efforts to extend our Mission and Values to our community, allowing us to bring essential new services and build for future needs. This support from our community gives us confidence that we will not only succeed, but thrive. My sincere thanks to our Foundation Boards of Directors, Committees, Young Professional Advisory Board, employees and volunteers, whose ongoing compassion, stewardship and commitment are the bedrock of our system. 2012 has been an exciting year! It has brought significant growth; most notably, St. Mary’s has completed the transfer of ownership of St. Joseph’s East Georgia in Greene County and is now operating as St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital. St. Mary’s will continue to enhance healthcare facilities, access and services in the Greensboro area by building a state-of-the-art replacement hospital to better serve the community. A Good Samaritan Foundation Board of Directors has been established to provide leadership for a Capital Campaign to raise funds for equipment, furnishing, and advanced technology for this new hospital. Please take a few minutes to learn more about this exciting news in the article about Good Samaritan Hospital. Through our outstanding events, over $297,000 has been raised to support the many needs of our patients in the community. These events include the “Take a Chance for Kids” Raffle, Culinaria, Golf Tournament, Next Step 5K, BreastFest, Bulldogs Battling Breast Cancer, and the Annual Gala. As many of you already know, the time and effort these events require are significant and we are truly thankful for our community volunteers, without whom we could not have achieved such great success. Through partnerships with our communities, donors and employees, the Foundation has endowed St. Mary’s with modern facilities, equipment and programs. Some of the disbursements of philanthropic funds for 2012 include: • • • • • • • • • Pediatric therapy equipment Hospice House improvements Health related equipment for the Alzheimer’s facility Upgrades to the Breast Imaging Center equipment Mammograms for women in need Improvements to Highland Hills Village Fetal monitors for our newest patients Wellness programs to reduce chronic disease Equipment for patients in need The Foundation is an important part of the team, helping to keep St. Mary’s in the forefront of our region’s health care network. By envisioning our future and working strategically to make it a reality, St. Mary’s Foundation helps to make certain that St. Mary’s mission will prosper for years to come. For that I am very grateful. The wishes of our donors are of paramount importance to us. All donors have the opportunity to designate their monies to various funds established through the Foundation. Donated funds are utilized as directed by our donors to improve and enhance services and facilities. Together we will ensure that the continued fine tradition of excellence, quality, service, and compassionate health care is provided by St. Mary’s for you and our community. Your energy, enthusiasm, and financial support truly make a difference in all we do. On behalf of everyone at St. Mary’s and the communities we serve, I thank you. With Best Regards, Don McKenna, FACHE President and CEO 2 Dear Friends and Supporters of St. Mary’s Foundation, The Mission of St. Mary’s Foundation is to improve and enhance services provided for patients and residents of St. Mary’s and to ensure these services are available to those who need them most by providing giving opportunities to the community. Over the past year, we have accomplished many milestones on our way to achieving our Mission. Our Young Professionals Advisory Board’s “Take a Chance for Kids” raffle was a sell-out. The annual golf tournament exceeded its goal in number of participants and money raised. The annual Gala continues to be the premier fundraising event in Athens, and the 2012 Culinaria was a great success. None of these events could be possible without your support. St. Mary’s Foundation’s philanthropic involvement extends beyond the many events held throughout the year. I would like to take a moment to recognize the following organizations, as they contribute a great deal to our success. We remain grateful that they choose to devote their hard work and dedication towards St. Mary’s mission. • The St. Mary’s Auxiliary is an integral partner and a power house fund raiser. The Auxiliary runs the St. Mary’s Thrift Store and the Love Lights program in support of the Hospice House. They are truly an amazing group of volunteers! • The Jittery Joe’s kiosk in the Lobby of St. Mary’s is also a partnership where a percentage of purchases are “contributed” back to St. Mary’s Foundation. • Our Breast Health Imaging program would not be where it is today without the support of Bulldogs Battling Breast Cancer and the Tyanna Foundation. Both of these organizations do an amazing job with events that raise money to support our Breast Health Programs. St. Mary’s Foundation has a new Society, The St. Mary’s Legacy Society. We invite you to read more about this new society and how you can become a member in this issue. The Legacy Society will help support and sustain St. Mary’s for generations to come. It is my pleasure to serve as the 2012-2013 Chair of St. Mary’s Foundation Board. The Foundation, through successful partnerships with our community and our employees, has endowed St. Mary’s with state-of-the-art facilities, equipment and programs, supporting St. Mary’s in being in the forefront of our region’s health care system. For those of you who volunteer your time and talents or give so generously to us, we thank you. It will truly take all of us working together to provide for the health care needs of our community, especially with the changing landscape of health care in our country. We hope you will enjoy the 2012 Annual St. Mary’s Foundation Magazine, The Spirit of St. Mary’s. Please share with family and friends, and “Like” us on Facebook! F Feel better her Best wishes for a wonderful holiday season and healthy, happy and peaceful New Year. Rhodes McLanahan, Chair St. Mary’s Foundation Board of Directors Good Samaritan Hospital: Building Today for a Healthy Tomorrow St. Mary’s has recognized a call from the community to build a Critical Access Hospital unlike any in the region. This community desires a local hospital that can provide the same level of quality as hospitals in larger cities, along with a similar scope of services. Premium services are sure to attract high caliber physicians and provide outstanding care, but premium services come at a cost. Just named as a Top 20 Critical Access Hospital at the National Rural Association’s Critical Access Hospital Conference, Good Samaritan is proud of its physicians and staff. Montez Carter, President, says “Our results as a top quality rating means our community can count on us to deliver the services they need now and in the future.” St. Mary’s has committed to financing construction costs associated with building the new hospital. Additionally, we are relying on philanthropic donations to purchase the advanced technologies and state-of-the-art equipment that will elevate the caliber of care available at Good Samaritan Hospital. Over 300 community members gathered at the Good Samaritan Hospital Construction site on August 16 to celebrate the groundbreaking of the new facility. Members of the Good Samaritan Board of Directors doned shovels and hard hats for the ceremony: Charlie Upchurch (Chair, St. Mary’s System Board), Jody Hass, Joe Gorman, Larry Kurlander, Janice Gallimore, Fred Hunter and John Hoffner. Photo by Dennis McDaniel There are a number of different ways to serve the community as a Critical Access Hospital. With philanthropic funding, St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital will become a model for providing advanced services and superior care in a Critical Access Hospital setting. With generous philanthropic contributions, St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital will provide: • Three fully-outfitted surgical suites with the advanced modern technologies to attract the finest surgeons in varying specialties • Complete digital mammography and X-ray and a full suite of state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment • First-class patient monitoring for emergency and inpatient beds, contributing to a higher quality of nursing care • Outpatient cardiac diagnostics, including plans for a nuclear medicine lab, leading to increased local cardiology presence • The area’s most Board Certified Emergency Room physicians • A sustainable telemedicine program to provide emergency stroke care and the administration of the clot-busting drug, tPA Across the region, whether you live in Greensboro, Siloam, Union Point, White Plains, or at the Lake, access to quality health care is something you desire for yourself, your family and your neighbors. St. Mary’s has answered the call from this community to commit to a hospital we can all be proud of. With your support, St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital will be one of the finest Critical Access Hospitals in the state, if not the South. Recognition and naming opportunities for the new hospital are available and may be discussed individually with donors. Your gift will be applied directly to our restricted fund for Good Samaritan Hospital. This general site plan gives a good view of the hospital’s four wings, parking areas, and location relative to Lake Oconee Parkway (bottom) and Carey Station Road (right). All patient rooms will be private and spacious, with lots of natural light to promote healing. Patient rooms will include advanced telemetric patient monitoring, best-in-class beds and enhanced IV systems. For information on giving to Good Samaritan Hospital, please contact Crysty Odom, St. Mary’s Foundation Director, at (706) 389-3926 or [email protected] BOTTOM PHOTO: St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital will provide an attractive healing environment. The word “legacy” is defined as “what someone is remembered for or what they left behind that is revered and has influenced the present day.” We would like to express our appreciation to these individuals for your foresight in including St. Mary’s in your plans, and extend invitations to officially become members of St. Mary’s Legacy Society. We consider it an honor and recognize that this special consideration will enable us to continue our mission into the future. The faith you place in the caregivers and staff at St. Mary’s through your kind gifts is gratefully appreciated. Together we make a difference and assure the continued fine traditions of health care excellence, quality, and compassionate care at St. Mary’s. If you have a bequest in your will naming St. Mary’s as a beneficiary or have another type of gift in your estate plans, please share this information with St. Mary’s Foundation. Camp Nokose is a free day-camp for children between the ages of 6 and 12 who lost a loved one within the past year. Each year an average of 20 children participate in a day of therapeutic exercises, storytelling, listening, and crafts to help them along their grief journey. ‘Nokose’ comes from a Native American term meaning bear or hibernation. Teresa Scogin, St. Mary’s Hospice Manager, explained the camp’s relation to the origin of the word ‘nokose.’ “Sometimes in order to digest a great loss you need go inside yourself to escape from the pressures of the outside world and ‘hibernate’ to re-energize from the grief.” Children are encouraged to look within themselves through arts and crafts and therapeutic exercises that are designed to explore their feelings. Not all children who participate in Camp Nokose lost a loved one who received care through St. Mary’s Hospice services. In fact, many children are dealing with a traumatic loss. “For these children it is extremely powerful just to look around the room and see that 20 other kids are facing the same struggles they are feeling,” shared Scogin. “Similarities in their stories connect the children and give them comfort in knowing they are not alone.” This year, campers crafted a bird house, decorated stones and planted rosemary to start their own memorial gardens at their homes. Each of the campers released a balloon at the end of their day to honor their loved ones and take one small step towards emerging from their loss. Camp Nokose is sponsored each fall through generous donations to St. Mary’s Hospice Fund, and it is hosted with the help of volunteer “buddies.” If you would like more information on making a donation or volunteering to help Camp Nokose, please call 706-389-3926. Spotlight on It is with great honor and appreciation that we spotlight Jay and Teresa Abbott. We are in awe of their extreme generosity and dedication to philanthropy. Jay and Teresa began Bulldogs Battling Breast Cancer in 2005 with the hope to raise awareness and money for research to cure breast cancer. Teresa Abbott is a breast cancer survivor and has been cancer-free since 2004. The Abbott family was so deeply touched after Teresa’s recovery that they decided they wanted to do something to give back to others in need. In 2005, Jay and Teresa decided they wanted to take the Susan G. Komen walk and pledge to fight breast cancer. To raise money for the walk, the Abbotts decided they would host a golf tournament in Athens. Chris Abbot, Jay and Teresa’s son, played football for the University of Georgia which gave them the opportunity to contact Coach Mark Richt and ask him if he would be able to help them out at the event. A camper and his volunteer “buddy” participating in Camp Nokose Bereavement Camp for Children JAY & TERESA ABBOTT greet to give all participants the opportunity to mingle and raise money for a great cause. BBBC wanted to make more of a local impact to provide treatment and equipment for the community, so they decided to begin donating to St. Mary’s Health Care System in 2009. When asked why BBBC chose St. Mary’s as the beneficiary, Abbott explained, “There was no question that we would donate the proceeds to St. Mary’s. The staff has always taken such great care of us.” Since 2009, the proceeds from BBBC have totaled over $75,000 in donations to St. Mary’s. That is a truly inspiring accomplishment. We could not be more honored to be partnered with such amazing people as Jay and Teresa. They embody the mission and values of St. Mary’s in all that they do. Thank you, Jay and Teresa, for your tireless efforts – we are forever grateful. “Coach Richt agreed without hesitation,” Jay shared. “We asked if the players and coaches could devote some time and come out to the event in support of finding a cure.” In the first year, the tournament raised $5,000, well over their expectations. “Year after year, the event grew larger and raised more money,” said Abbott. This is how Bulldogs Battling Breast Cancer (BBBC) began. “We had no idea that the tournament would be such a huge success. We are extremely pleased with the generosity of the UGA football team and the local community’s wiliness to participate.” The Charity Golf Tournament is unique in that it offers a team of three the chance to be paired with a coach or player.
