What Excursion Customers Are Saying…
Finally there’s a vehicle capable of taking the kids, their friends and
all their stuff — plus tow the boat — on a weekend to the lake.
There are so many thoughtful features in Excursion —
like the rear tri-panel door and Reverse Sensing System.(1)
Excursion not only has features to protect its occupants in a collision,
it’s also the only heavy-duty wagon with front and rear bumpers designed specifically
to match a passenger car’s bumper in a collision.
Excursion has the towing and payload capacity of a heavy-duty truck,
but also features a high level of amenities.
Why Excursion?
1. Excursion has more head room, shoulder room and leg room than 1999 Suburban.
2. Excursion offers up to 10,000 lbs. of towing capacity as standard.
3. Excursion has an automatic tow-haul feature, which enables the transmission to adjust power and shifting to
compensate for hilly terrain, changes in altitude or when towing heavy loads.
4. Excursion has more cargo volume than 1999 Suburban.
– 1.1 cubic feet more behind the third row.
– 11.7 cubic feet more behind the second row.
– 15.5 cubic feet more behind the first row.
5. Excursion has a “no-compromise” rear-door solution with its rear tri-panel door and standard intermittent
rear wiper.
6. Excursion has the flexibility of a third-row seat on rollers and dual tip/slide second-row seats.
7. The second-row seats are also independent reclining (a segment exclusive).

Fuel economy
This year’s Source Book presents Excursion
features and benefits in six key purchase
motivator categories.
• Gasoline engine fuel economy targets are
competitive with Chevrolet Suburban
• The optional diesel engine fuel economy targets
are even more competitive
These categories – Environment, Performance/Handling,
Comfort/Convenience, Safety/Security, Quality/Reliability/Durability
and Design/Styling — are provided in each vehicle section of this book.
Their length and order may vary, depending on their relevance to the
individual vehicle. This format replaces the previous six-position
Walkaround, and allows you to easily find and present information
as it relates to the customer
• Excursion is more fuel-efficient — with more
passenger- and cargo-carrying capacity — than
two average full-size sedans capable of
transporting equivalent loads
• Ford market research shows the heavy-duty utility
customer who would buy Excursion is twice as
likely to haul five to seven passengers as a full-size
SUV owner, and is almost four times more likely
than a compact SUV owner
Low Emission Vehicle (LEV)
• All three Excursion engines will meet federal
Low Emission Vehicle (LEV) standards
• Excursion produces up to 43 percent fewer
smog-forming hydrocarbon exhaust emissions
than permitted by U.S. regulations
Recyclability
• Nearly 20 percent of Excursion is made from
recycled materials, including various steel,
aluminum, rubber and plastic parts
• All Excursion engines also will meet the stricter
California Low Emission Vehicle standard for
light trucks
• More than 80 percent of the vehicle is recyclable
by weight
• Roughly 180,000 lbs. of bottle caps and cotton bale
wrappers will be used each year to create Excursion
air conditioning components, air cleaner housings
and glove compartment components
• Carpet will be recycled to create air cleaner covers
• More than 1 million two-liter soda pop bottles will
be recycled annually to create Excursion quarter
window glass frames
• More than 100,000 scrap battery cases will be
used in the annual production of Excursion fender
shields, battery cases and accelerator pedals
• Annually, more than 12,000 passenger car tires
will be recycled and used to make Excursion air
deflectors and splash shields
Alternative Fuel Vehicles (AFVs)
• A 25-unit demonstration fleet of Excursion
models fueled by liquid propane gas (LPG) will
be produced
• These vehicles are expected to meet Super Ultra
Low Emission Vehicle (SULEV) standards
• As SULEVs, these vehicles would have up to
62 percent lower emissions than a gasolinepowered Chevrolet or GMC Suburban

pedal feel
• The beam is engineered to help prevent smaller
vehicles from sliding under Excursion in a
frontal collision
Four-wheel Anti-lock Braking System
(ABS)
• Functional air dam covers the front component and
helps improve fuel economy by about 0.5 mpg by
providing better airflow under the vehicle
Standard on all models
• Designed to eliminate wheel lockup in many severe
braking situations, under a variety of weather
conditions
• A 3-foot-long trailer hitch is positioned to offer the
same protection in rear-end crashes
• The frame-mounted hitch receiver is a nonremovable item
• When impending wheel lockup is detected, the
system automatically “pumps” the brakes on the
locking wheel(s) several times per second,
preventing the wheel or wheels from locking
and giving the tires added traction for slowing
the vehicle
• Any modification or removal of the hitch receiver
compromises the safety benefit it was designed
to provide
• The action of the electric pump can be heard as a
rapid “clicking” sound, and a faint pulse can often
be felt through the brake pedal — this is normal
and indicates that the system is operating as
intended
• Four-wheel ABS also improves steering control
while braking
If space is available, demonstrate ABS in your parking lot or
on an empty stretch of roadway. Apply the brakes quickly and
have the customer listen for unfamiliar sounds associated with ABS.
Then have the customer test the ABS to familiarize themselves with the
normal brake pedal pulsation.
BlockerBeam: Engineering drawing
Second Generation Driver and Front
Passenger Airbag Supplemental
Restraint System (SRS)(1)
Standard on all models
• The Second Generation Airbag Supplemental
Restraint System, in conjunction with the threepoint safety belt system, is intended to help
reduce injuries in certain moderate-to-severe
frontal and near-frontal collisions. It is not a
substitute for safety belts. Remind customers to
always wear their safety belts, and that children
under 12 years of age and infants in rear-facing
child-safety seats should never ride in a seat
equipped with an airbag
BlockerBeam: Exposed (lower valance removed)
BlockerBeam: Hidden by lower valance
(1) Remind customers to always wear their safety belts and place children in the rear seat, properly restrained.

the switch, as well as specific reset instructions
and warnings
• If the key does not have the correct code, the
vehicle will not start
• The system is automatically armed when the key
is removed from the ignition and is disarmed
when the correct key is reinserted into the ignition
Have the customer try to start the vehicle with a key that
belongs to another Excursion. Explain that the specially
coded key transmits a radio signal to a small transmitter in the
steering column. When the wrong key is inserted, the vehicle won’t
start. This is why it’s such an effective anti-theft system.
