Resident Spotlight of the Month...
For the month of February we want to bring the spotlight on a fun and vibrant
woman. She has a good sense of humor and loves to keep herself busy. One thing you might
notice about her when you first meet is her Australian accent. She was born in Sydney, New
South Wales, Australia. She and her sister Joan grew up together in the city of Leichardt with
their mother Rachel and father Edward. From 1919 to 1945 Edward worked as a Merchant
Seaman until WWII started, then joined the military and became a Air Raid Warden. Some of
the games she loved to play growing up were dominoes, Scrabble, and Canasta.
When Beryl attended high school, she participated in Physical Culture with the motto
‘Men Sana in Corporo Sano’ meaning healthy mind in a healthy body. After she graduated
she began teaching children. Through mutual acquaintances Beryl met Clement who was a
Sergeant serving in the Australian Army. They were married on September 16, 1956 in All
Saints Church. After his term in the Army, Clement joined the police force. After a few years
he was promoted to a detective for homicide investigations. In 1966 he was stationed in Cyprus as a part of the 3rd Australian Police Contingent working with the United Nations. Beryl
was able to travel with her husband and their only daughter Joanne. In 1970 he resigned
from the police force and took a position in the U.N., stationed in Jerusalem. During
Clements work with the U.N. Beryl became a school teacher for all the Diplomats children
from the ages six through sixteen.
They moved to Phoenix, Arizona for a year
where they owned and operated a Hobby and
Craft Store. In 1980 Clement accepted the position of High Commissioner of Refuges in Peshawar, Pakistan. Joanne had stayed behind in the
U.S. because she joined the Army. He also
worked in Tiberius, Israel in 1983 for the U.N.
When he was transferred to Beirut, Lebanon in
1985, Beryl was not able to travel with him, so
she came to live in Lemon Grove, California.
Beryl worked for Macy’s as a Waterford Crystal
Specialist until she retired in 2001.
A few of Beryl’s hobbies include dress making, reading, and playing Scrabble. Her favorite
vacation was when they all went on Safari in Namibia, Africa. She is very thankful for all the traveling she was able to do in her life time. Beryl
has one granddaughter who she loves spending
time with. She is also proud mention her daughter works as a Registered Nurse. Thank you
so much Beryl for sharing your story!

Exercise For A Healthy Heart ...
Get That Heart Pumping People! We like you!
Here’s a note from Web MD
Your heart is a muscle, and it gets stronger and healthier if you lead an
active life. It's never too late to start exercising, and you don't have to
be an athlete. Even taking a brisk walk for 30 minutes a day can make
a big difference.
Once you get going, you'll find it pays off. People who don't
exercise are almost twice as likely to get heart disease as people
who are active. (www.webmd.com)

It’s really
fun!
Mental Notes ...

Scientists have discovered that mental puzzles and exercises can stimulate the dendrites
(memory storage compartments) of your brain cells.

Severe mental decline is usually caused by disease, whereas most age-related losses in
memory simply result from inactivity and a lack of mental exercise and stimulation. Just
like physical exercise, when it comes to your brain, "use it or lose it."

Put away your calculator and balance your checkbook the old-fashioned way—with pencil
and paper. It's mind healthy!

Research shows that being around other people is good for your memory. Close ties with
others seem to improve mental performance. Maintain social connections for your mind's
sake.

Make music for your mind's sake! Researchers who study aging and the brain say that
playing a musical instrument or learning how to play a new instrument keeps dendrites
growing.
