the santai relax chairs promise great comfort
with their laid-back sitting position and soft seat
covers. upon resting in the chairs, one can explore the
elegant contours of the armrests that are carefully
carved out by hand.
the basic shape of the legs is inherited from their
ancestors, while the new fine details are derived from
the old javanese alphabet hanacaraka.
the cilik coffee table perfectly complements
relax-furniture, especially the santai relax chairs.
not only can you place your favorite magazines and
beverages next to you, but you can also use the table
top as a tray and the table‘s base as a foot rest - when
the top is removed.

the relax chairs are inspired by the classic
sedan and jengki chair from the 50’s, two javanese
design icons that fused western influences with local
materials and skills. once used in the living room,
they can now be found on verandas, with families
resting on them in the late afternoon and enjoying a
chat and the scenic views of their village.

the amben daybed is a pure relax-furniture that
brings the comfort of a javanese daybed to your home.
being on the spacious mattress together with friends
and family promotes a nice feeling of closeness.
the mattress seems to be floating above the base,
while it actually rests on elastic bamboo slats that
smoothly cushion your movements. the bamboo legs
further catch one‘s eyes with their warm natural
color and fine hand-shaped contours.
the amben is the oldest
and most authentic javanese furniture. in early
times, when local people
still sat and worked on
the floor, the amben was
used to rest, craft and
sell goods. while it has
almost completely disappeared from urban areas,
one can still find it in villages today, with people
resting on it and enjoying
a good time together in
the afternoon.

the founder
dennis pluemer (second from right) is an economic
geographer from bonn, germany. being a southeastasia enthusiast, he spent a few years studying and
working in various countries of the region.
among all places he has seen, java - with its tropcal
nature, prevalence of traditional living and mystical
culture - fascinated him the most. ultimately, the
creative young scene and the sheer endless pool of
beautiful arts and materials inspired him to establish
santai.

the designers
all santai furniture are exclusively developed by
award-winning designers from java. being true
advocates of their heritage, only they have the ability
to create designs that portray the deeper meaning of
local culture and style elements.
the team of designers has a broad background of
different disciplines, e.g. architecture and product
and interior design. what binds them together is a
deep interest and understanding of their heritage, a
vision of a contemporary javanese design and the drive to move things forward.

the bale bed is a cozy
retreat in which you can
rest and recharge from
daily life. it embodies
the ascending concept
of
javanese
temple
compounds, where the
highest point is the most
sacred place. likewise
the bed’s mattress forms
a platform on which you
are closest to paradise.
the bed’s design is modeled after the array of the
temple gates with its two strong stone pillars and
the steps above the door. the bale’s strong legs are
adorned with a motive called pusoko (weapons), which
is usually carved into the wooden pillars of the temple
gates to protect the sultan from evil spirits.

looking against the light, the padi table reveals his
subtle highlight: round carved shapes on seemingly
different levels that resemble the stunning visual of
rice terraces. it transports the feeling of a late
afternoon, when farmers gaze over the fields after a
day of work.
palisander wood, metal legs available in stainless steel or brass (cm): height 40,0; depth 51,5; width 90,0.
local craftsmen carve along the exotic grain of
palisander wood, shaping fine grooves that create the
terrace optic, while maintaining an even surface that
guarantees the safe usage of the table top.
angkringan set

(javanese) = small mobile outdoor bistro
the angkringan table set embodies the flexibility
and social warmth of a javanese mobile bistro. the table fulfills all possible functions: eat, work and mingle. and with the bench further creating a nice feeling
of social closeness, the table set becomes the ideal
hub of your home.
in the later afternoon one can observe javanese men
pushing mobile bistros - with benches, food and a
coal stove attached - to their regular outdoor spots.
people come and mingle, have a hot tea and play
chess. it is a place to come together and directly be
part of a group.

the kring table’s highlight lies beneath its surface: a
second layer made of woven rattan that allows you to
store stuff and quickly change the table’s function. to
make it easier to reach the bottom, there are two flaps
along the length of the table.
the visual appearance of the table is defined by
a flowing array of thin and thick lines that are
emphasized by fine linear carvings. the optic of
altering line thickness is derived from the
traditional javanese alphabet hanacaraka.
the ang bench completes the table set‘s social
character, sitting on it together creates a nice feeling
of closeness and ease. optional pillows, with a motive
aligned to the rattan weaving pattern add to the
comfort of the bench.

(javanese) = abbreviation for honocoroko, the old javanese alphabet
palisander wood, metal letters available in stainless steel or brass. in the pictures (small
size) (cm): height 7,0; depth 5,0; width 75,0. available in different sizes.
the hono wardrobe is inspired by old street signs,
one of the few media where the old javanese alphabet
is still used.
just like the street signs give you directions, the
wardrobe sends you out into the day with a message.
one edition says ojo dumeh (don’t be arrogant), while
the other says jalan jalan (explore).

java has a great history of blossoming kingdoms
and multicultural influx that resulted in a rich
pool of handcrafting skills and exotic style
elements. hardly used by modern products yet,
they are threatening to disappear and consequently
precious elements of local culture would be lost.
through the creation of fresh javanese designs and
the new application of traditional skills, we hope to
contribute to the revitalization of javanese culture
and the improvement of the people‘s livelihoods. materials
the identity of santai furniture is defined by solid natural
materials, whose origin is of highest concern to us. we are
committed to only using resources that were sustainably
cultivated.
we source hardwoods like teak and mahogany from
state-owned plantations. palisander, bamboo and
rattan are supplied to us by private entities,
who increasingly plant trees as an investment – especially for old age security.
production partners
santai furniture are produced by small and
medium enterprises from central java. each
furniture is created by an individual network consisting of one furniture producer, various sub-suppliers
(e.g. metal parts, upholstery) and traditional craftsmen
(e.g. carving, weaving).
we combine traditional skills with modern techniques to
create furniture that not only fulfill high quality demands, but
stand out with handmade details that make each piece unique.
