This Model 99 1887 Shotgun has been set aside as a fund-raiser for the SASS Scholarship Fund. The laser engraving on the stock makes this a unique shotgun—one any cowboy would be proud to own! 18 END of TRAIL 2013 BATAAN MILITARY ACADEMY Bataan Military Academy is a tuition-free, co-ed, college-prep public high school in Albuquerque, New Mexico. All Cadets are members of the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps—the U.S. Navy’s youth organization. Founded by Shelby DawsonTallchief, a Lieutenant Commander in the Sea Cadet program and Associ- ate Regional Director for Arizona and New Mexico, Bataan opened at the beginning of the 2007-2008 school year with freshmen and sophomores. Currently accepting students of high school grade levels (9-12), Bataan Military Academy (BMA), a day school, provides a world class education by highly qualified, certified teachers and military service members who are active duty, reservists, or retired. The Academy is named Bataan to remember the POW soldiers and sailors who were surrendered to Japanese forc- es on a Philippine Island named Luzon in 1942. During a forced removal to a POW camp, some 70,000 of these American and Philippine soldiers died during what later became known as the Bataan Death March. In remembrance of these brave men, many of whom were from New Mexico’s 200th Coastal Artillery, BMA Cadets participate in the annual 26-mile Bataan Death March Memorial Marathon held at the U.S. Army White Sands Missile Range near Las Cruces, New Mexico. For the past three years cadets from BMA have been actively involved in construction projects at Founders Ranch, a charitable non-profit 501(c)3 organization, and have actively participated in numerous Ranch events. Cadets have manned gun-cleaning stations and policed match brass for the competitors … all for tips as part of their service to the community efforts. SASS, END of TRAIL, and Founders Ranch are very grateful for their participation and support, and look forward to continuing it in the future for our mutual benefit. END of TRAIL 2013 19 The Founders Ranch Antique Shooting Gallery Proudly presented by Henry Repeating Arms Co. AND The SASS Western Heritage Museum Founders Ranch is proud to be home of one of the few surviving H. W. Terping 1950s vintage .22 shooting galleries. The SASS Western Heritage Museum and Cowboy Action Shooting™ Hall of Fame acquired this piece almost six years ago, and it’s a true treasure to behold! Much like many of us saw and shot at the carnivals, fairs, and even at Disneyland in our early years, we have painstakingly replaced the almost priceless original targets with faithful and precise reproductions— ducks, rabbits, squirrels, pipes, eagles, and all! We even added a few custom SASS Marshal targets! A recent partnership with Henry Repeating Arms Co. has equipped the gallery with the finest .22 rifles the world has to offer, and it is set up and ready to be shot as intended, here at END of TRAIL. As one of only a handful of original shooting galleries that can still be shot, don’t miss this rare opportunity to try your hand at this traditional turn of the Century arcade entertainment for ALL AGES! So, step right up, put a fine Henry Repeating Arms Rifle in your hands, set your sites on a target, and “Win the little lady a Kewpie Doll!” All proceeds benefit the SASS Western Heritage Museum and Cowboy Action Shooting™ Hall of Fame. END of TRAIL 2013 21 COWBOY MEMORIAL CHAPEL A Work in Progress By Tex, SASS #4 One of the most elegant buildings on Founders Ranch, the Cowboy Memorial Chapel, continues to be a “work in progress.” This year Singin’ Sue and Shanley Shooter made the drive to Oklahoma to meet Sierra Hombre from Illinois to take possession of 20 donated pews. Their adventures with the Oklahoma toll roads has been well chronicled in the November 2012 edition of The Cowboy Chronicle. Cap Stevens, a local SASS cowboy, completed his restoration of an old 1880s-style pump organ, which he and his brother-in-law, Clip Casey, donated to the Chapel. The organ now resides in the Chapel. Coyote Cap managed to acquire a set of hymnals from a church in Minnesota, and these are located inside the Chapel as well. Hipshot has provided the first set of memorial plaques, which are hanging inside the Chapel. Calking and the initial coat of paint have been applied to the building, making it finally ready for serious use. All of these efforts have been accomplished through volunteer efforts by SASS members interested in seeing the project completed. In addition to these volunteers, the Chapel Committee is to be congratulated for their very successful efforts getting this project off the ground and funded in accordance with the original plan. The initial plan called for raising $75,000 for the basic construction … unfortunately, that turns out not 22 END of TRAIL 2013 to have been enough. Some $87,000 has been raised, but we still lack several thousand dollars to the contractor for the basic building. We’re not through asking for donations! Once the building costs have been covered, we can begin completion of the interior. Drywall, lights, fans, stained glass windows, pulpit, and the like have yet to acquired and installed. Donation opportunities for memorial plaques to be placed on pews and other prestigious locations will be identified shortly. Don’t forget the raffle for the Coyote Cap donated 1901 “Model ‘87” shotgun! This particular shotgun is a VERY expensive and exclusive shotgun—it’s a prototype, one of only a few, and will never be available again. Tickets are available through the SASS website and are on sale during END of TRAIL at the SASS Mercantile. The drawing for this prestigious shotgun will take place at the SASS Convention—one doesn’t have to be present to win … but you SHOULD be! The Chapel is non-denominational, and is available for any of our members to use. The Chapel has already been put to use … one of our local cowgirls, Sioux City Sandy, proprietress of the END of TRAIL Tea Tent passed away very unexpectedly in April. Her ashes were spread around the Chapel during a quiet family remembrance following her memorial service. Time is set aside Thursday evening at 7:30 PM for the Chapel dedication. Everyone is welcomed and encouraged to attend. Come for the Side Match Awards and stay for the dedication! See you there! This Model 1901 70/150, 12 gauge prototype by Coyote Cap is now being raffled to raise funds to complete and furnish the Cowboy Memorial Chapel. Raffle tickets are $5 each, or 5 for $20. Get your tickets today at the SASS Mercantile. Some special features of this work of art are: premium full race action job, cut & crown barrel to 18 1/4", 18K gold filled lettering and numbering, jeweling of internal parts, leather lever wrap, high grade American walnut forearms and buttstock, laser engraved logo and checkering, custom gun case and a (no BS) warranty certificate. Generously donated by Coyote Cap to benefit the SASS Founders Ranch Chapel Fund. MCKENNA MINOR The By Tex, SASS #4 E . Mckenna Minor was born in 1860 in Hartford, Connecticut and died peacefully on Founders Ranch near Edgewood, NM in 1945. McKenna, as so many like him, had a difficult childhood punctuated by the violent murder of his father. Spurred by thoughts of revenge, he finally set out on his own, learning to shoot and work like a man. He had a full life as a cowboy, Indian fighter, buffalo hunter, outlaw, lawman, Ranger, Rough Rider, and soldier. His full life is chronicled in a delightful short story by White Smoke Steve, SASS #91779, a local Albuquerque western writer with a number of novels dealing with lawman Turner Brown’s adventures in and around New Mexico to his credit. Although the character, E. McKenna Minor, is fictional, most of his exploits are right out of the pages of our Old West history books. The careful reader will recognize many of these exploits from our western lore. McKenna’s story is told in the stage scenarios—Action Shooting, Wild Bunch™ shooting, and Plainsman stages. Stage props and match flow dictate which portions of the story line go with each stage; hence, there was no effort to ensure everything is in chronological order, but, hopefully, the essence of Minor’s story still comes through. END of TRAIL thanks the Judge, SASS #1, for the inspiration for this year’s match theme—Memoirs of a Cowboy and White Smoke Steve, SASS #91779, for creating the life story of E. McKenna Minor, which served as the guiding beacon for all the story-line scenarios. Also, a big “thank you” to T. A. Chance, SASS #4072, Action Shooting Match Director, Pecos Clyde, SASS #48481, Wild Bunch™ Action Shooting Match Director, and Tex, SASS #4, Plainsman Match Director, for creating the shooting scenarios. White Smoke Steve, SASS #91779, wrote the short story that provides the basis for all the END of TRAIL stage story lines. Although his main character, E. McKenna Minor is fictional, he embodies the quintessential traits, both good and bad, of all the western characters we’ve read about or seen on the big screen. And, it’s rumored Minor looks an awful lot like White Smoke! Drift back with us now to the times of the Old West, where larger than life heroes like E. McKenna Minor forged a story understood around the world and framed the world we know today. It’s fantasy time, it’s shooting time, and it’s time to relive the past with our friends! Welcome to END of TRAIL 2013! END of TRAIL 2013 35 SCORING INSTRUCTIONS All scorES must be recorded on the correct scoring sheet The scoring box with timers, scoring book, and spotting sticks will be placed on each stage first thing in the morning. This box and its contents are to remain on the stage and not be taken with the posse to the next stages. Each posse will have their own score sheet for recording scores. Please make sure scores are recorded correctly, and initialed by the shooter. In addition to the traditional method of 36 END of TRAIL 2013 scoring, the 32nd annual END of TRAIL will also incorporate the use of ACES (Automated Cowboy Easy Scoring). Each posse will be given an electronic device ready to go for scoring their posse. If you are new to ACES, please join the ACES crew for a "how-to" seminar on the ACES Scoring program on Wednesday, June 26 at 3:00PM in the GEM Saloon. The results of the day's shooting will be tabulated and posted as soon as possible. Any challenges to the posted scores must be reported to SASS Administration by 10AM the following morning. Please have your individual score card available for inspection. On occasion, END of TRAIL match officials will authorize people to "shoot through." These are folks who perform a specific function at END of TRAIL but still want to be able to shoot the match. When they have appropriately identified themselves, please allow them to integrate near the front of your shooting order, and complete their competition tasks. There will be a special score sheet that remains at the stage to record the results of the shoot through competitors. Shooter Door PrizeS FRIDAY ONLY! 10:00AM-5:00PM BELLE UNION SALOON Between the hours of 10:00AM and 5:00PM Friday ONLY, every registered shooter may present himself or herself at the Belle Union Saloon and draw a prize! To draw a prize you must present your individual shooter’s scorecard so it can be validated. When you draw your prize you will be given the thank you postcard associated with your prize. A thank you note is to be written to each sponsor, and your postcard must be returned to us at the time you claim your prize. You may complete the postcard and claim your prize immediately. All prizes must be claimed by Friday 5:00PM. Prizes not claimed by Friday 5:00PM will be considered forfeited. If you win a cartridge firearm, be aware of the following: • You will be required to sign a “firearms prize roster” at the time you draw your prize. We have found this step necessary as a double-check in tracking the volume of guns we give away. • You must pay any transfer and shipping fees. • If you hold a valid Federal Firearms License, bring a signed copy of it and a photo I.D. to Diamond J's Gunsmithing, opposite the Ruger Firearms Building, on Sunday morning, and we will transfer your prize to you. • If you are not a Federal Firearms Licensee, we will not transfer a firearm to you at END of TRAIL. We will record your name, alias, and SASS membership number as the winner/ owner of the firearm. You will be required to locate and notify us of a federal firearms licensee (dealer) convenient to your home address to whom we can ship your gun. We will require a signed copy of that dealer’s FFL prior to shipping. That dealer will complete all required transfer paperwork. You will be responsible for any costs associated with the transfer. END of TRAIL will pay the shipping cost to your dealer. Percussion firearms are not subject to the above procedures. You can take immediate delivery of these reproduction “antique” firearms. END of TRAIL 2013 37 SCOREBOARD AND MESSAGE CENTER The scoreboard is located on the side of the Cimarron Mercantile. The squading and an indication of each shooter’s category are posted. Please check the printouts and verify “everything looks OK.” Each evening a staff of ace scorers will be working diligently to keep up with the competitor’s scores. “In process” results will be printed and posted each main match day evening. Please check your scores and make sure they are correct. If your scores appear to be in error, please report the matter to SASS Registration in the Copper Queen. The SASS Registration personnel will communicate directly with the scoring staff. Every effort will be made to correct the error as quickly as possible. Any shooter attempting to communicate directly with the scoring staff, either about the scores, or the time of day, is in dire jeopardy of being disqualified from the match. Leave them alone! RANGE ACCESS As the spectator and guest crowds 38 END of TRAIL 2013 at END of TRAIL have grown, we have seen more and more potential for accidents to grow with them. The Wild Bunch, and our liability insurance carrier, have all shared concern about uncontrolled access to the immediate vicinity of the shooting. Only registered shooters, match officials, and registered media representatives have access to the range area (that is, inside the berms.) BRASS PICKUP Our restrictive main match schedule d o e s n o t a l l ow t i m e b e t we e n individual shooters and posses for brass pickup. The Wild Bunch is fully aware many of you consider your spent brass to be more precious than silver or gold. However, we hope you will agree in the overall context of the cost of your visit to END of TRAIL, the loss of your brass is relatively immaterial. You may only pick up brass during warm-up and side match events on Tuesday and Wednesday. All the brass that hits the ground during the Main Match stays on the ground, except for brass shotgun hulls, which may be retrieved. We will have the Bataan Military Academy on hand to police brass. They will be sorting and selling the brass during the match. Those of you who treasure brass will thus have an opportunity to make a worthwhile charitable contribution while increasing your hoard and assuring yourself of many satisfying hours separating and polishing. All spent brass can be purchased from the Bataan Military Academy who will sort by caliber and bag for your convenience. FUNCTION FIRE RANGE No special areas have been set aside as function fire areas. Also, END of TRAIL is not the place to come and “practice,” sight in your firearms, or hold private side matches. If you need to function fire your firearms to verify safe, reliable operation, approach any range officer supervising an operating range. When there are no lines of waiting shooters, you will be given permission to send a few rounds down range. Fun shoots for rifle, pistol, and shotgun are available on Wednesday, and Conventioneer ranges are open throughout the match. MATCH SUPERVISION AND PROTESTS It is inevitable one or more of you will disagree with a range decision made during the course of the match. END of TRAIL is a recreational sporting event. We’re here to have fun. The outcome of this match will not have a serious impact on the history of the World, and we regard the whole affair as having somewhat less consequence than balancing the federal budget and reducing the deficit. Temper tantrums or any other conduct not in the Spirit of the Game will result in the guilty shooter’s immediate expulsion from the match. If you sincerely feel you have been subject to an unfair or incorrect call that may affect your place of finish, you may protest the call according to the following, always keeping in mind the Spirit of the Game and its foundation on basic good sportsmanship. First, CLEAR THE RANGE. There are other shooters behind you and a schedule to keep. Then, CALMLY AND COURTEOUSLY question the Range Officer who made the call as to the reason(s) he made the call. The rules for the match and each stage are quite clear cut. Each shooter has had an equal opportunity to become familiar with them. In the majority of cases, your disagreement with a range decision is the result of your forgetting or overlooking a rule or procedure. If, after hearing the explanation of the decision, you still feel you have been treated unfairly, take your case to the Posse Marshal for your stage. If you are still not satisfied, the next step in the appeal process is to go to one of the Match Range Officers and then finally to the Match Director, T.A. Chance for Cowboy Action ShootingTM or Pecos Clyde for Wild Bunch Action ShootingTM. A little patience on your part will go a long way. If, after the decision by the Match Range Officers and the Match Directors, for some unlikely reason you still believe you have been had, you may appeal your case to a protest committee comprised of three other Match Officials. If you wish to take your case to the protest committee: 1. Your protest must be in writing. 2. It must be filed on the same day as the incident. 3. You must pay a $50 protest fee. The protest committee will conduct an investigation appropriate to the circumstances. If your position is upheld, the $50 protest fee will be returned to you, and your score corrected, as required. If the original decision is upheld, you lose the protest fee, and your score stands as originally recorded. END of TRAIL 2013 39 Calling All Posses! Posse Roster guns will be staged on the hay bales and may be fully loaded. Any posse with more than five people shooting rifle will be DQed. You will find the Posse Roster posted at the Scoreboard on the side of the Cimarron Mercantile. To the extent possible, all requested “pairings” were accommodated. Action Shooting posses shooting stages 9 – 12 are to report to the Long Range Bay (Bay 16) for the Team Shoot. The first and second relays each day will shoot the team event AFTER shooting their main match stages. The third replay will shoot JUST BEFORE their main match stages. Pay Attention! The posse with the most targets down will win. Time will be used to break tie. We squad one posse into each shooting slot of 45 minutes. This amounts to approximately two minutes for each shooter, beep-tobeep. It is very important everyone make every possible effort to keep us on schedule. Thursday Posses 9 – 12 ~ 10:30AM Posses 33 – 36 ~ 1:00PM Posses 21 – 24 ~ 1:30PM IT IS IMPERATIVE you find your scheduled shooting times on the enclosed shooting schedule. You must be at the designated individual and team events by your scheduled times. The rest of the posse will have two revolvers loaded with five rounds each. The posse member with the shotgun may have his revolvers loaded, but the posse members shooting rifle may not have loaded revolvers. Rifles will be staged on tables; revolvers will be holstered. Shotgun cannot be loaded until it is ready to be fired. All firearms will be loaded on the firing line. There will be no reloading. Each posse will start on the firing line with hands in surrender position. At buzzer, shoot all knockdowns, except designated shotgun target. When all knockdowns are down, the shotgunner will shoot the knockdown to stop the timer. This target must fall to count. Any shot fired after the shotgun is shot will be a 10 second penalty, and if a target is knocked down it will not count. (The posses assigned to shoot at the same time will RO for each other.) POSSE PHOTO SCHEDULE We have a new Posse Photo schedule this year!! Artie and Sadie at Major Photography are set up in the walkway near Bay 8. The photo schedule is listed below. ARRIVES AT END OF TRAIL!!! By Wolf Wind-Walker, SASS #36748 The Acronym is: Automated Cowboy Easy Scoring The idea: There’s got to be a way to score cowboy matches with electronic devices. How it started: I got lucky and ran into the guy who could do it. We met at a Dixie Desperados cowboy match in St. George Utah. His name was Ken Nelson, and his company is Nifty Bytes, a software App generating company. Kismet? Of course, now his name is Pitt Viper, and his son is Molasses Kid! Enough history, so after a year and a half of using our App, we are scoring END of TRAIL with A.C.E.S. We owe it to all the folks who use A.C.E.S. and have spread the word on how user friendly it is and how it makes their lives easier. Thanks!! TRAIL and would be glad to chat with you about it … just find Pitt Viper, Nellie Blue, Molasses Kid, Wolf WindWalker, Major Payne, or J. T. Wild. A.C.E.S. is an App you download for a smart phone, iPod, iPad, Mini, and assorted tablets. It is used on both Apple and Android devices with few exceptions. Oh, and it’s FREE! We have lots of information on our web site at: Acesscoring.com and a great “how to” video as well. And, we have a great support staff to answer questions and provide help at: [email protected] Basically you enter shooter scores and penalties on the device keypad, and the App does all the calculations for you. If you have multiple Posses, you hit more keys to “sync” all the devices, and then it gives you results in the format of your choice. Pitt Viper says, “ACES makes scoring easy, fast, and fun. No matter the match size, you can have stats done shortly after the last shots are fired. The good folks who used to tap in thousands of scores can now join in the fun—both during and after the match.” The folks from the “A.C.E.S. Traveling Road Show” are here at END of The Action Shooting match will be scored using rank points while the Wild Bunch and Plainsman matches will be scored using the “points” system. Thanks to the Wild Bunch for recognizing the potential for A.C.E.S. and for asking us to score END of TRAIL. We built it to make life easier and to help Cowboy Action Shooting™ get to the next level. A “Quote” from the Wire, “A.C.E.S. is the best thing that has come down the trail in years!” And, we like to think maybe there is some truth to that! END of TRAIL 2013 41 Cowboy Action Range Rules and Scoring Standards The current SASS Shooter’s Handbook shall be followed at all times. In accordance with the instructions contained in the Handbook, the following rules and scoring will be observed during this match: 1. Eye protection is mandatory; hearing protection is highly recommended. 2. All miss penalties are five seconds each. 3. Procedure penalties are 10 seconds, maximum one per stage. 4. All “pre-beep” actions are expected to be performed “with feeling” - if the timer does not feel the competitor has satisfied the intent of the scenario, the time will not be started and the competitor instructed to “do it again.” 5. Revolvers are always carried with the hammer down on an empty chamber. 6. Dropped ammo is “dead” ammo. Put extra ammo on your body for each stage. If ammo is dropped, leave it and retrieve a new round from your supply. The live round can be retrieved from the ground after the shooter has shot the stage. 7. A dropped gun is a “dead” gun, and may only be retrieved by the range officer. Any dropped gun will result in automatic disqualification for that stage. If the gun is loaded, it’s a match disqualification. 8. Cap and ball revolvers may be loaded with only five rounds. All loading (charging the chambers) must be accomplished at a designated loading or unloading table on the range. 9. All range commands, especially “CEASE FIRE,” are to be instantly followed. 10. Knock-down targets must go down to be counted as a “hit” or a bonus. No competitor may advance beyond the first shooting position or touch any of the stage targets prior to shooting the stage. The stage marshals will make the judgment calls if the targets need to be adjusted or realigned. Individuals accomplishing the timing and resetting targets are not considered competitors at the time. 15. Discharging a rifle or revolver round over the back berm will result in disqualification from the match. 16. Match disqualifications include using ammunition that exceeds the SASS maximum velocity, dropping a loaded gun, accumulating two stage disqualifications, or a belligerent attitude. 17. Did Not Finish (DNF) - If a firearm malfunctions, the gun is made “safe,” and the shooter does not finish shooting the remaining firearm(s) or 11. This is a “no alibi” match. McKenna Minor, fighting as Dwayne Dockery, was one of the nineteen Americans who climbed atop the roof of the final jungle stronghold on the hill. There were thirty-five enemy soldiers inside the building, surrounded but still defiant. McKenna and fourteen men in his squad jumped through the opening in the roof and engaged the enemy in handto-hand combat. At one fifty in the afternoon E. McKenna Minor, fighting as Dewayne Dockery, pulled down the enemy flag. WILD BUNCHTM MATCH STAGES E. McKenna Minor was still serving as the Columbus Town Marshal in 1916 when Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa launched a raid on Columbus. McKenna, still in a nightshirt, strapped on his gun belt, grabbed a rifle, and rode to the Columbus Army base. Armed with a machine gun and their Springfield rifles the 13th fought back Villa’s men while McKenna organized a force of cavalrymen and Columbus citizens to pursue the retreating Mexicans. R Villa’s men entered the town around four o’clock in the morning, catching most of the town and the nearby Army post asleep. McKenna awoke to the sound of distant gunfire and the sight of fires in the town as Pancho Villa’s cavalry tried their best to burn Columbus to the ground while they looted the homes of the townspeople. Three hours into the fight, Pancho Villa’s raiders broke off the battle and melted into the hills. WILD BUNCHTM MATCH STAGES By the late 1890s McKenna had cleared his name of all past indiscretions and had rejoined the Texas Rangers. Soon after 1911 he found himself in Mexico in hot pursuit of Mexican bandits. After a fierce firefight, the Rangers executed thirty-two men and boys in a village outside Guadalupe in the Mexican state of Chihuahua. Stage 4, Bay 4 20 PISTOL, 10 RIFLE, 6 SHOTGUN Staging: Pistol loaded with five rounds and holstered. With pistol sweep the five cowboy targets and then sweep the five tombstone targets. Repeat the instructions. As the Rangers re-crossed the border there were thirty Mexican bandits in close pursuit. While the Rangers crossed the Rio Grande, McKenna saw Company Captain Brooks Long’s horse stumble and collapse, tumbling Captain Long into the river. McKenna pulled back on his reins and turned his horse toward the pursuing Mexicans. He reached Captain Long at the same instant as the first of the Mexicans. Three well-placed shots from McKenna’s pistol killed two Mexicans and gave Long the time he needed to swing up onto McKenna’s horse. WILD BUNCHTM MATCH STAGES McKenna shaved some twenty years off his age when he joined the Marines to fight in the Banana Wars. His experienced leadership saved many young men from foolish mistakes that certainly would have cost them their lives. He loved his old guns, and they served him well. As Villa’s men spread throughout Columbus, they shot at everyone they could find and attempted to set fire to the buildings. Every able-bodied person who could hold a gun fought back in a matter of life or death. As one squad of Villestas rounded a corner, McKenna went to work with the guns at hand … WILD BUNCHTM MATCH STAGES Several of Villa’s commanders and one hundred ninety of his men were killed, including the three men that McKenna killed when he captured Villa’s Colonel Candelario Cervantes in close combat in the small village of Tomochic. McKenna was in Mesilla, New Mexico where he became a Doña Ana County (New Mexico) Deputy Sheriff and a partner in a Mesilla saloon and bordello. Shortly thereafter McKenna relocated to Columbus, New Mexico where he operated The Variety Saloon. When he disarmed a rowdy drunk who had murder in his heart and a Colt pistol in his hand, he was hired as the Columbus Town Marshal. WILD BUNCHTM MATCH STAGES Stage 10, Bay 12 McKenna turned fifty-six as he rode as a scout with General John J. Pershing through the mountains of northern Mexico. Pershing had been dispatched by Washington to track down and capture or kill Pancho Villa and his men. The firearms may be shot in any order. (No split shotgun or rifle.) The shotgun must be shot from position 1, the pistol from position 2, and the rifle from position 1, 2, or 3. Shooter says, “Stop! You’re under arrest!” and waits for the beep. Procedure: When shooting the shotgun, shoot the five shotgun targets, when shooting the rifle, engage all ten stationary targets with one round each, and when shooting the pistol, engage all ten stationary targets with two rounds each. Cattle rustling was still alive and well in southern New Mexico as McKenna agreed to help the New Mexico Rangers shut down the escape routes back into Mexico. A small line camp in Skeleton Canyon was one of the well– known rest points favored by the desperadoes, so Mckenna and the deputies set up an ambush. At three in the morning, one could clearly hear the sound of hooves in the darkness. When ordered to stop, the fighting began … 1 2 3 56 END of TRAIL 2013 WILD BUNCHTM MATCH STAGES After the fighting in the Caribbean, McKenna returned to Columbus, NM where he was elected sheriff and served for many years. On a stifling July night bootleggers shuffled into town leading their burros laden with whisky kegs. Move forward to position 4 and repeat the instructions. 4 3 1 2 END of TRAIL 2013 57 PLAINSMAN MINI-MATCH STAGES Stage 1, Bay 3 10 Revolver, 5 RIFLE, 4+ SHOTGUN A month after his promotion McKenna Minor left the freight line to become a buffalo hunter for the Kansas Pacific Railroad and thereby tripled his wagon driver’s salary. The railroad had hired the company of Goddard Brothers to feed the work crews and the Goddard Brothers offered McKenna two hundred fifty dollars a month to kill buffalo. This was considerably more than McKenna Minor could earn driving a freight wagon, and it was more money than his parents ever earned from their always-struggling hardware store. Staging: Two revolvers loaded with five rounds each and holstered. Open, empty rifle on the shelf next to the building, and open empty shotgun on the shelf at the far right. Starting Position: Standing at the right shelf pointing at the buffalo, shooter declares, “I’ll be the richest buffalo hunter in the territory!” Procedure: At buzzer engage the shotgun targets. With the rifle, engage the far rifle targets in a five-shot Nevada Sweep. With the first revolver from the right window, engage the close revolver targets in a Nevada Sweep. Start the swinger and then move through the door to the first set of revolver targets and engage the farther revolver targets in a Nevada Sweep. Stage 2, Bay 4 10 Revolver, 7 Rifle, 4+ Shotgun Staging: Two revolvers loaded with five rounds each and holstered. Open, empty shotgun and rifle on the right horse. Starting Position: Standing beside right side horse holding reins in both hands, shooter says, “I don’t know if my Sharps will shoot that far!” Procedure: At buzzer engage all seven rifle targets. From behind the rocks engage the revolver targets, at least one round on each target. Finish by engaging the four shotgun targets. 58 END of TRAIL 2013 McKenna took the ten dollars he’d saved from his salary as a freight wagon driver, combined it with what little other money he had, and then added what he received for his father’s Springfield rifle and bought an almost worn-out Sharps buffalo gun. The work of a buffalo hunter was hard and hazardous. The twelve-year-old-McKenna had to first search the countryside for the buffalo. McKenna quickly found the massive herds had been thinned by earlier buffalo hunters and driven farther and farther away from the routes chosen by the railroads. PLAINSMAN MINI-MATCH STAGES Of course, in his search for the buffalo he was just as likely to find Indians as he was to find buffalo. Actually, shooting the buffalo was the easiest part of the job. Once he had killed the animal, it was his responsibility to oversee the butchering of the buffalo and ensure the meat was loaded onto wagons and transported to the railroad camp. Stage 3, Bay 5 10 Revolver, 6 Rifle, 6+ Shotgun Staging: Two revolvers loaded with five rounds each and holstered. Open, empty shotgun and rifle on hay bale. Starting Position: Standing behind hay bale rifle in hand, shooter screams, “Shoot ‘um all before the Indians come back!” Procedure: At the buzzer engage the far rifle targets twice each and take both the rifle and shotgun to the downrange bales of hay. Engage the revolver targets twice each and then finish with the six shotgun targets. Goddard Brothers expected Minor to deliver an average of twelve buffalo each day. Working from dawn to dusk McKenna Minor could kill and butcher an average of twenty buffalo a day. The first dozen went to the Goddard Brothers, and then McKenna contracted with traders who bought the other eight for their Eastern clients. In the process, McKenna pocketed twenty-cents for each buffalo tongue and three dollars for each buffalo hide. Stage 4, Bay 6 10 Revolver, 5 Rifle, 4+ Shotgun Staging: Two revolvers loaded with five rounds each and holstered. Open, empty rifle in rifle holder, and open, empty shotgun on far left shelf Starting Position: Starting at the right fence, shooter cries, “Keep shootin’, it ain’t dark yet!” Procedure: At buzzer, engage the revolver targets in a 2-1-2 sweep. With the rifle engage the far rifle targets in a 2-1-2 sweep. Engage the second set of revolver targets (includes the mover) in a 2-1-2 sweep. Finish by engaging the four shotgun targets. In 1870, the ten-year-old McKenna saw his father shot to death by six former Confederates who had been Quantrill Raiders during the War. As his father fell, McKenna grabbed his father’s “Army” Colt from the shelf beneath the store counter where his father had stood. McKenna fired once but missed all six men. One of the six turned his gun toward McKenna and fired, hitting the boy in the left shoulder and knocking the ten-year-old off his feet, leaving him unconscious and blood-soaked next to his father’s body. MAIN MATCH STAGES McKenna Minor spent the spring of 1878 working for a wheat farmer in north Texas but like so many lawmen of the time he crossed easily onto the other side of the law when in need of quick and easy money. McKenna found himself in such a need in 1879, and he became an outlaw when he robbed a bank in Tascosa, Texas. The Tascosa bank had less “ready cash” than McKenna had hoped for, and he was still broke when in 1880 he spent his twentieth birthday at the bar in Cimarron, New Mexico’s St. James Hotel. McKenna and Quinn partnered for two years, making 134 arrests before they stumbled upon Hunnicutt’s cousin, Woodrow Burton, bent over a bowl of stew in a cabin in the Choctaw Nation. Burton was the sixth, and last, man who had been involved in the murder of McKenna’s father. McKenna shot the man on sight. MAIN MATCH STAGES McKenna Minor had turned thirteen in the winter cold of northwestern Kansas, killing and then butchering twenty-three buffalo along Beaver Creek. The next day he killed three Cheyenne who were among a war party of a dozen Indians intent on pushing white men away from the traditional hunting lands of the Cheyenne. McKenna invested the stolen cash in a cattle ranch outside Dalhart, Texas and settled down, living the life of a married cattleman. MAIN MATCH STAGES McKenna Minor stood five feet ten inches and weighed one hundred forty pounds when he marked his twelfth birthday. He was wiry and strong and could easily pass for a young man of sixteen. Charles and Alonzo Ferber, and their cousin, Russell Hunnicutt, were at the bar in an illegal whiskey tent on the Wichita-Caddo-Delaware Reservation. McKenna drew his pistol and shouted that the three were murderers who had a debt to pay. The Ferber brothers answered McKenna’s challenge, but McKenna left them both dead on the hard-packed dirt floor of the tent. MAIN MATCH STAGES During the whisky tent shootout, the third man, Russell Hunnicut dropped his whisky, found a fast horse outside the tent, and rode east. Six months later, the fifteen-year-old McKenna found Hunnicutt again—this time, in a Fort Smith, Arkansas whorehouse. Hunnicutt inadvertently shot the woman he was with as he blindly fired his Colt when McKenna burst into the room with his pistol drawn and its hammer pulled back. Brothers James and Ronald Campsey were playing cards as McKenna walked into the barroom. James Campsey, the younger of the two Campsey brothers reached for his revolver while he sat at the card table, but the gun barely cleared its holster before McKenna fired. He left both of the Campsey brothers dead in the saloon and headed for Indian Territory. MAIN MATCH STAGES McKenna’s wife died in June 1885, three months before the Dalhart ranch went bankrupt. Later that year, despondent over the death of his wife and the loss of his ranch, McKenna fell back into the life of an outlaw. McKenna bought a half-interest in a saloon in Trinidad, Colorado and celebrated his twenty-sixth birthday in the arms of a “working girl:” a beefy Irish girl named Kate. McKenna was standing behind the bar at his Trinidad saloon as Cormack McCorkle when a dust-covered cowboy walked in with a wanted poster. The man called himself Tremont Rhodes. McKenna immediately sold his share of the saloon to his partner and rode out of town. Tremont Rhodes followed McKenna and caught-up with him along a lonely stretch of road outside Trinidad. Rhodes offered to forget he’d found McKenna in exchange for seven hundred fifty dollars. McKenna refused, and as Rhodes reached for his revolver McKenna drew his revolver and shot Rhodes twice in the chest before stripping the body of any identification. MAIN MATCH STAGES McKenna robbed the Overland Stage office in Walsenburg, Colorado in early 1888 and adopted the name Tremont Rhodes as he invested in a cantina in Pueblo, Colorado. In early 1889 McKenna sold his share of the cantina as a bounty hunter named John Ridgeway Yuma appeared in Pueblo. Yuma’s body was found outside Pueblo a week later. Leaving the outlaw trail, on Friday, November 1, 1889 Minor joined Company E of the Texas Rangers in El Paso, Texas under the name of Dewayne Dockery and resolved to spend the rest of his life defending the defenseless. Grand Opening OF THE Wednesday night during the END of TRAIL Kick-off Party Free Margaritas! Stop by and check out the newest addition to Founders Ranch! 82 END of TRAIL 2013 END of TRAIL Waddies are a group of dedicated volunteers, who, like their Old West namesakes, do the things that help make the operation run smoothly. The Old West definition of a Waddie was a temporary hired hand, paid a dollar a day and “found” (food), and with a place to throw his bedroll. Our dedicated team of Waddies travel from all over the country to lend a hand wherever they are needed. These are the folks who “make it happen,” from the friendly Waddie who greets you at the front gate when you arrived to stocking water for our valued guests. These folks are the first ones up in the morning and the last to bed at night. Waddies perform literally hundreds of necessary tasks before, during, and after END of TRAIL. For over 30 years Waddies have been an integral and crucial element of END of TRAIL. We are proud of each and every one of them, past and present. We thank them for their spirit, their “can do” attitude, and for carrying on this proud Old West Tradition.
